You are in your apartment, you being a measly earth pony, you spend most of your time doing nothing, you don't own a big house, and because of equestria's living laws that were put into place a few years before you were born (about 30 years ago) you're not homeless. you humbly sit at home, without a cutie mark your life seem to have no meaning, one day, a friendly pink earth pony invites you for a match of poker, it's your birth day and they're missing a 5th. you play the game, you find a curtain level of charm in lying, especially since most ponies are extremely bad at it. Since they all have extreme facial expressions and lying seems to be really transparent with all of them. And you're really good at lying since your face is actually structured like a real horse, one of the reasons other equines weren't interested in your company, you're ugly as hell.
you win your first game by a land slide, not losing one notch and gaining notoriety around the land, ponies are starting to pay attention to you, and slowly you're becoming from an unknown rando, into a sensation, and from that other groups are starting to take notice...
