1. In The Magical Land Full of Peace and Harmony
After Twilight was through reading the book, she looked once more upon those strange gems. 'Elements of Harmony, I feel like I've heard of them before. I'm going to have to deal with them if I ever want to have a chance when the time comes, and I know just the place to start.' She placed the book in her satchel and went on her way to her room inside the castle.
Unfortunately, a trio of ponies were coming in the opposite direction with gifts on their backs. When they spotted Twilight their mood dampened quite obviously, making twilight grin and walk towards them. The pony in the middle with the white fur and curly pink mane reluctantly spoke up.
"Oh... Hey there, T-Twilight," she spoke nervously, looking down at a rather interesting spot of dirt on the ground while slowly hoofing at the earth beneath her. "U-um, Moondancer is having a little get together tonight and," she then spoke under her breath so only the trio would hear, "for whatever reason," then continued talking to Twilight "invited you to come along. So... you wanna come?" She stole a quick glance at Twilight, and her expression already answered the question.
"I couldn't care less about any sort of gathering you lowlifes plan, whether or not I'm invited! now get out of my way. I've got important stuff to do and I don't want you or that clingy foal bothering me, got it?" during the course of her speech she walked over to the ponies, and while they were to paralyzed to back up, they lent backwards, but as they did so Twilight lent forward making her seem more threatening as she towered over them.
They all nodded their heads quickly.
"Then why are you still in my way?" She demanded. The ponies quickly shot off in the opposite direction. Twilight smiled to herself and continued on her way.
When she got to her door, she used her magic to force open the doors, right into her pet dragon's face. "Spike you dumb ass, get off your flank and start searching for a copy of predictions and prophecies." When Spike took his time recovering, She yelled at him "NOW!".
After hearing her yell at him, any objections he might have had died as he got up. He was a bit upset that his present for Moondancer was destroyed, but he got to work looking for the requested book. "Alright, Twilight. No need to shout. Why do you need it anyway?"
Twilight shot a glare at Spike. "That's none of your business, now get moving!" Twilight started looking at the bookshelves she held in her room, scanning each book title until Spike called out to her.
"Got it!" Spike yelled from on top of his ladder, a look of worry crossed his face when the book he was holding was enveloped in Twilight's magical glow, he was given no time to let go before it was pulled towards her. He landed on his face right in front of Twilight, still holding the book in the air allowing the mare in question to read the title.
"You see, Spike. It's times like these which makes me just a bit less disappointed in myself that I didn't kill you when I first got you!" She spoke with an air of glee in her voice as she walked to her desk.
Spike looked up at her and scratched the back of his head. "Uh... thanks?" He questioned, but the only answer that was given was an affirmative nod as she got to reading her book in silence, flipping through the pages twice.
A bit later, Spike was trying to see if his present to Moondancer was still presentable until Twilight suddenly snapped the book shut, deep in thought. 'So. An evil mare powerful enough that Celestia had to use some magical gems called the elements of harmony to stop her will return on the day after tomorrow, during the summer sun celebration. This is just perfect!'
As a plan formed in her head, and an evil grin split her muzzle before she replaced it with one of worry and looked to Spike. "Spike, I need you to take a note immediately!"
Spike had known Twilight for a while, and knew that nothing would scare her, but seeing the look on her face made his eyes widen before he darted off to get a quill and parchment, he then turned to Twilight and stood at the ready.
" Dear Princess Celestia.
Today, whilst reading a book I noticed I hadn't had the pleasure of reading, I came across a discovery stating that we are on the precipice of disaster."
Before she could go on Spike interrupted her speech. "Hold on, preci.. preci?"
Twilight looked at him disappointingly "P-r-e-c-i-p-i-c-e. Is that good enough for you or do you want to interrupt me again for something else?" While talking she slowly raised her voice in irritation.
Spike shook his head quickly to avoid further angering the mare.
"Good, now as I was saying - "
"For it told of a mare trapped inside of the moon called Nightmare Moon, who is apparently your sister, and she will escape during the summer sun celebration on he day after tomorrow to bring about eternal night! I humbly request that I be sent to procure a set of gems you are likely familiar with called the elements of harmony to halt her plans.
Your faithful student,
Twilight Sparkle."
Once Spike was sure that Twilight had finished speaking this time, he asked her "Really? there's a mare in the moon who's the princesses sister?"
"Well, the book didn't explicitly state that they were sisters, but only a foal wouldn't recognize who the book was talking about." Twilight replied "Hey, why are you still holding that letter? Send it to the Princess."
Spike blew his dragon breath onto the parchment and watched it fly through an open window. "I'm surprised, Twilight. Given how you act on a daily basis, I'd figured you'd want something like this to happen."
Twilight turned to look at him with slight anger apparent on her features. "Ignoring what you said about me, just because I may be a little bit mean to others, and rightly so, doesn't mean I want them to die Spike."She laughed a bit inside her head at her lie.
Spike got a fearful expression on his face from the obvious irritation in her voice. "Oh, y - your right, I'm so, so sorry." He pleaded.
"Apology accepted, for now." Twilight replied with a hint of malice in her voice.
Spike looked down at the floor, before asking "Hey, Twilight. don't you think the princess is a bit busy with the summer sun celebration's preparations to-" he was interrupted when he belched out a scroll.
"Don't question my importance to the princess again, now read what she wrote, Spike."
Spike cleared his throat before reading.
"My most faithful student Twilight.
I know not of this book that you have read, but I ask you deliver it to me as I assure you it is false. I have no sister or knowledge of these gems you spoke of. You really shouldn't believe everything you read in those dusty old books. However, speaking of the summer sun celebration, I would like to request that you go check on the event, It is being held in the nearby town of Ponyville. I already have a chariot prepared for you."
Spike took a second to look up at Twilight, then immediately backed up into the corner of the room as he saw an expression of pure hatred and murder across twilight's face. When she noticed Spike had stopped reading, she decided to let out a bit of her anger.
"ARE YOU BUCKING KIDDING ME!?"
The next day, Twilight and Spike are on a carriage taking them to Ponyville. Twilight still contained the dark look on her face while Spike read out what was left of the scroll sent to them the previous day, but had been forgotten due to an outburst from Twilight that ended in multiple ponies in the hospital.
Twilight had made sure there were no witnesses so she didn't get into trouble all thanks to a spell she had pre-cast on everypony so that they go into a catatonic state whenever she wants them to. When they become conscious again, while they don't remember what happened, they still retain a fear of Twilight as if they had seen it.
Celestia hadn't taught her that spell, instead she had self taught herself a lot of high level and dangerous spells.
What Celestia didn't know would hopefully kill her.
"My dear Twilight, there's more to a young pony's life than studying. Due to this whilst your overseeing the preparations I have an even more important task for you to complete, make some friends."
Twilight had to resist the urge to punch Spike when he said that. Spike noticed her increasing distress and attempted to calm her down. "Well, look on the bright side, Twilight. the princess arranged for you to stay in a library, doesn't that make you happy?"
Twilight contemplated this before she realized that she could potentially find more information about these elements of harmony or Nightmare Moon and brightened up. "That's it! I'll complete the royal duties of checking on the preparations as fast as I can, then I'll head to the library find out more about Nightmare Moon! I'm sure the princess is hiding something from me and I want to know what."
"But what about making friends, like the Princess said?" Spike asked.
Twilight turned around and angrily said, "Just shut your stupid face up Spike or I'll do it for you."
Spike said nothing else until they touched down in Ponyville. "C'mon Twilight? What if these ponies have interesting things to talk about, just try, please?" He asked, pointing at an incoming pink mare.
Twilight gave out a large sigh, 'If it'll get him to shut up, then fine, I'll humor him.' She turned to the pony, with a flat look. "Hi." She simply stated. The mare in question jumped into the air with a gasp and ran off. "Huh, I guess my reputation proceeds me. Well I tried, Spike. Will you shut up about friends now?"
While Twilight smirked at the idea that ponies in other towns knew to fear her, Spike nodded and looked to the list of things they needed to check on that was given to them before they left.
"First up, the banquet, being prepared by some ponies who live in a farm called Sweet Apple Acres." He stated
"Alright, lets get going," she said. "Where is it?"
They entered the area, looking at the farm, until they heard somepony yell "YEEEEEEHAAAAAAWWW!" and they turned to spot a blonde-maned pony knocking down apples from a tree to land in some surprisingly well placed fruit baskets. 'I guess that's were their earth pony magic comes in.' Twilight thought.
"Well, this must be our mare." Twilight stated as she walked over to her. "Hi, I'm Twilight and I-" Before she could continue, she found her hoof was suddenly being shook harshly.
"Well howdy do, Miss Twilight? Pleasure makin' your acquaintance! I'm Applejack, we here at Sweet Apple Acres sure do like makin' new friends!" Applejack spoke cheerfully, continuing to shake her hoof wildly.
Twilight tried to increase the power behind her hoof shake, but it didn't seem to faze the earth pony. 'What is it with everypony and friends?' She thought. "Well, I'm just here to overlook the preparations for the summer sun celebration, heard your in charge of the food."
Applejack released her handshake. "Yep, we sure as sugar are! Would you like to sample some?"
Twilight thought for a bit. "Eh, fine. Just make it quick."
The last words of her statement went unheard as the farmpony went off to ring a rusty triangle yelling "SOUPS ON EVERYPONY!" And then suddenly a whole bunch of farmponies surrounded her and had placed her at a table.
'Oh just bucking great.' Twilight deadpanned to herself as Applejack introduced everypony, and as she did they all placed a plate of food on her table, stacking it up high of different apple based foodstuffs. After applejack had introduced everypony she put a hoof over Twilight's shoulder. "Well I'd say you're already one of the family!" She declared happily.
Twilight deadpanned. "Yeah, sure. Anyways it looks like the foods good so I'm gonna go now."
However after she finished her sentence a small filly cried "Aren't ya gonna stay for brunch?" and she looked at Twilight with an incredibly cute expression.
Twilight however, was having none of it and simply said, "No." All of the apple ponies present then simultaneously went "awwwww", yet still Twilight was unfazed. While all of their heads where down, she cast a spell, all of their eyes flashed violet for a second, but nothing else changed. "Yeah, sucks to be you, bye." Twilight called over her shoulder as she left the farm, leaving a bunch of dejected farmponies.
Spike attempted to berate her for leaving, "That wasn't very friendly, Twilight."
"Yeah yeah, cry me a river you big baby. Oh wait, you're not even a big baby are you?" Twilight mocked.
Spike, saddened from the harsh words used against him, looked at the next item on the list and told Twilight, sadness evident in his voice. "Next is the weather, supposed to be taken care of by a pony called Rainbow Dash."
"So I thought that the sky was supposed to be clear? Whoever Rainbow Dash is she sucks hardcore." As Twilight finished her statement, she spotted a blur speeding towards her, which she promptly grabbed with her magic before there was even a slight danger to her. Twilight looked upon this object she caught only to see it was a pegasus, not an object, well actually still an object in Twilight's eyes. "Wow, nice aim." Twilight criticized.
The pegasus looked up at her. "Heh, sorry about that. The name's Rainbow Dash! But you probably already knew that, right?"She looked expectantly at Twilight.
Twilight in turn, raised her eyebrows at Rainbow. "Oh hey, you're the pegasus that sucks at her job!" Twilight said with false recognition.
"Yep, that's me! Wait, what did you say? Who told you that, huh? Was it Thunderlane?" Rainbow interrogated as she got right into Twilight's face.
Twilight meanwhile was unimpressed. "I said that, because it's true. I mean just look at the sky. If that's your definition of clear then I'd like to know what your definition of messy is." Twilight explained.
Rainbow backed off a bit and shot her a look of indignation. "Hey, I was gonna do it, I was just training to join the Wonderbolts!"
Twilight processed what she said, then fell onto her back, laughing.
"Hey, what's so funny?" Rainbow questioned.
"You? In the Wonderbolts? They'd probably rather kill Celestia than let you into their ranks, especially if you can't even keep the sky clear!"
Rainbow Dash looked at Twilight in shock. How dare she call her skills into question, she'd show her! She went about clearing the sky as fast as she could, doing it in roughly 10 seconds flat. "There, done! Bet you feel stupid!" Rainbow looked at Twilight, expecting to see her mouth agape, instead she had a sly smile on her face.
"Thank you, you played right into my hooves! Now that the weather's done, what's next Spike?"
Before Spike could answer Rainbow flew into her face, twilight took the opportunity to cast the same spell she'd done at the farm, with her eyes flashing violet for a second before turning normal. "What the hay do you mean you played me right into your hooves?" She demanded.
"I wanted the sky clear, so I got you to do it, simple as! Celestia you're stupid aren't you?" Twilight, not waiting for any more rebuttals from Rainbow, took the scroll from spike and read it herself, pleased to know that what's next was in a building close by. She then trotted off to it with Spike in tow while Rainbow stared after her with a look of shocked anger, she then grumbled to herself before flying off.
"Heh, you're right Spike! These ponies are fun to talk to!" Twilight giggled as they entered the hall where the event would take place.
Spike was about to reprimand her before he set his eyes on the most beautiful mare he'd seen. "It's beautiful." He stated.
"Meh, the decorations are alright," Twilight replied. "Could be better."
"Not them, her," Spike said. Twilight looked in the direction Spike was looking to see another pony putting up the decorations, who she supposed was the mare called Rarity.
After taking a glance between the dragon and the pony, she hit Spike in the back of the head. "like you'll ever find somepony special, Spike. Now stop dreaming else I have to crush more of them. Besides, dreams are for winners." Twilight said matter-of-factually. After demoralizing Spike she walked up to the pony looking at ribbons. "hey," Twilight said.
The white and blue mare then turned around and said dismissively "Just a moment please, I'm in the zone as it were."
Twilight sighed in annoyance but waited as she talked to herself about a ribbon and mention her name was in fact Rarity.
"Now, how can I help you?" She asked
"Well Rarity, I just came to check up on the decorations to make sure they're good for the celebration. But it looks like it's all done up so I'll just take my leave." Twilight replied.
Before Twilight could try and leave, Rarity questioned her more. "Um, excuse me. While I understand being a bit worried about the decorations, why would you come to directly seek me out?"
"well I was sent here to check on all of the preparations for the celebration, orders from Celestia, if you really must know." unfortunately while Twilight thought Rarity was just suspicious, she was actually just curious, but upon hearing about Celestia's name, she put two and two together.
"Wait, you're from Canterlot, aren't you? Oh, I'm so envious! The glamour, the sophistication, I've always dreamed of living there! I can't wait to hear all about it. We're going to be the best of friends you and I!"
Twilight gave Rarity a flat look and quickly cast her spell before saying. "Yeah, well, as much as I'd love to spend time talking about the place I hate the most, I have a tight schedule so see ya!" Twilight called over as she trotted away. Before rarity could say anything more she was out the door.
"Next, music with a mare called Fluttershy, apparently she's going to have a choir of birds singing, although I don't see how that would be possib-" She was cut off by the sound of birds singing, she looked over to see a pony coordinating a tree full of birds to sing."Well I stand corrected." Twilight stated as she watched the pegasus in question politely ask one of the birds to sing on key. 'How on earth is she doing that?' Thought Twilight. 'I'm going to need to investigate that when I'm not so busy.'
Twilight once again cast the spell she had been casting on the others. "Well, looks like we're done here, lets get going" As she turned to leave she noticed Spike hadn't left with her and was still listening to the music, so she dragged him along with her magic. The noise disturbance form the dragging caused the animal musician to turn around and see-
"A BABY DRAGON!" The mare rushed forward right next to Spike. "Oh, I've never seen a baby dragon before!"
Twilight was slightly annoyed at having to interact with the pony and she turned around, not letting Spike have his input. "Yeah well there's a first time for everything isn't there. Now as much as I'd love to see you talk it up with my dear friend Spike here we've got to go." Twilight stated as she placed Spike upon her back and attempted to escape, however Fluttershy didn't seem to notice her and just started talking to Spike.
"Hi there, I'm Fluttershy" She spoke with a giddiness in her voice.
"Hi, my name's Spike!" He replied.
"Wow, It talks too. That is so incredibly wonderful." Deciding she couldn't be bothered, Twilight just blocked them out as she was finally able to walk home
"And that's my whole life story up until today. Do you want to hear about today?" Spike questioned Fluttershy. Fluttershy was giving Twilight a glare after hearing about the deeds she'd done to Spike in her past, and was about to reply before Twilight interrupted their conversation.
"Well, looks like we're home. Now go away," Twilight said.
Twilight was glad to finally get home, but she felt something was off with the inside. After doing a quick scan of the tree house that she now had to call home -something she wasn't overly fond of- she found lots of magical signatures. In fact, it seemed that all of Ponyville was waiting inside her house.
She didn't know why they were there, and considered teleporting straight to her room, but as much as she hated to admit it, it would be better to go in to cast her spell on everypony. So with a huff of annoyance, while disregarding any objections Fluttershy had about leaving, she walked into the dark interior of her home. After walking into the center of the room she gave out a sigh. "I know you're all there." She said.
The lights were turned on and the mare they first encountered appeared with a confused look on her face. "What? But how? Did somepony tell you about the super secret surprise party I planned for you? How dare they!" The mare yelled in a rapid volley of words.
"Nopony told me, I just knew." Twilight replied as she decided then and there that she'd have to kill somepony if she gave this hyper mare the time of day, so she used her ability of blocking ponies out, one she seemed to be using a lot today, on her as she rambled about her name being Pinkie Pie and why she threw the party.
Twilight trotted over to get a drink, but instead of pouring it out, she just grabbed the soda next to the hot sauce and walked up to her room. She noticed that the 5 mares she had encountered today had come over to talk some more, but she just left without a word, casting her spell on the room as she went up the last few steps.
The only pony who seemed to react to it was Pinkie, who hit herself in the head a couple of times before shrugging it off.
"Whats got her panties in a bunch?" Applejack asked.
"Pfft I don't care, she seems like a jackass to me." Rainbow Dash replied. While the others may not of liked her use of language, they agreed with her all the same.
"Yeah, I can't believe she took the entire bottle of soda, and didn't listen to a word I said. What a meanie pants." Pinkie Pie mumbled, before asking the rest of them weather or not pants can act in a way that would make ponies call them mean.
Twilight lay on her bed, gazing at the moon. 'I can't believe I'm not going to be able to study the mare in the moon or the elements of harmony just because that stupid pink pony decided I needed friends.' She thought, then she realized something. 'Wait, why am I letting them stay in my house? I could just kick them out and get to studying. Oh why didn't I think of this sooner.' She berated herself.
Just as she was about to get up, Spike entered the room. "Hey, Twilight. the festival's about to begin. We should go now if we want to see it," Spike said. 'Never mind.' Twilight thought as she hopped out of bed and walked out of her room with a sigh.
Twilight was waiting with Spike sitting on her back in the hall, waiting for it to begin. She saw some of the previous ponies from before standing a ways away from her, occasionally glancing at her and whispering. Pinkie seemed like she wanted to come over, but was conflicted about it. 'Let them have their gossip' She thought to herself. 'I don't care about them anyways.'
Suddenly she heard some birds whistling and looked up to see Fluttershy conducting them as they sung. A spotlight then flew down to a small area in front of them where the town mayor stood and introduced the celebration. She made sure to cast her spell on them and any others she noticed hadn't been in the party at her house, like the three fillies hanging around.
Twilight looked up to the sky, saw the stars closing on on the moon and watched the figure of the mare disappear, making her grin maniacally. She turned back to the mayor who was praising Celestia. 'Oh shut up you stupid whorse.' She thought as she noticed Fluttershy prepare her birds once again. "Princess Celestia!" The mayor decreed as the spotlight moved to where Rarity pulled back the curtains to reveal...
Nothing.
Twilight's grin returned as ponies started panicking... and Pinkie thought it was a game. Suddenly Pinkie screamed as a blue shimmering mist appeared on the balcony. "Yes," Twilight said quietly to herself. "Nightmare Moon"
The mare in question gazed across the hall of ponies. "Oh my beloved subjects, it's been so long since I've seen your little sun loving faces," she said with a tiny bit of anger showing in the last part of her sentence.
"What did you do with our Princess?" Rainbow shot at her, and then attempted to charge at her before Applejack held her down.
Nightmare Moon gave a small chuckle before resuming. "Why? Am I not royal enough for you? Don't you know who I am?" She questioned
"Oh oh, more guessing games! Ummm, Hokey Smo-" Before she could go any further her mouth was forced closed by Twilight's magic as she shot Pinkie a glare.
Nightmare Moon spotted Twilight from the crowd as the one who silenced her. "Oh, and what about you my dear? Do you know who I am?" She asked.
"Yeah, you're the mare in the moon, Nightmare Moon." Twilight said, but not happily instead of harshly, although everypony else gasped in fright at Nightmare Moon.
While it confused Nightmare Moon that this pony seemed happy to see her she continued. "Well well well, somepony who remembers me. Then you also know why I'm here," she said, more as a statement than a question.
Twilight spoke back, not even trying to hide her giddiness. "You're here to bring eternal night and rule over Equestria!"
This shocked Nightmare Moon even more. 'Why is she so happy about this? Unless she wants it to happen? No that's absurd. Nevertheless, I shall keep an eye on that pony' She thought. "Correct. Remember this day little ponies, for it is your last. From this moment fourth, the night, will last. Forever!"
She laughed as lightening struck around her, while everyone was so focused on Nightmare Moon, no one noticed Twilight laugh with her.
