The Foal That Came From Nothing
Chapter 1 - You named him what?
More than a decade before Twilight Sparkle ever set a hoof in Ponyville, before she found out about the “Elements of Harmony”, before that time, stood an orphanage in Canterlot. Well, that orphanage still exists to this day and might as well still exist for a long time. A quite young mare directed that orphanage, her name was Violet Blossom her mane was an almost neon purple, tied up on the back of her head. Her fur however was a washed out green, but she covered it with her business suit that also covered her Cutie Mark, a budding purple rose.
Her orphanage, known as the "Rising Sun" Orphanage is the work of her life, a place where each of those lost foals that ended up there would be sure to gain a good and safe home. Violet treated the foals as if they were her kids too, but she always tried to not be too attach to them. It would be just more of a heartbreak when they go away, even knowing that they would be safe at home.
Violet is getting dressed to go out of her room and start her morning. Some might say that she look too strict like this, but she had to wear it so she would appear more “professional”, in the past, she didn’t hear it, but they helped the prospective parent to see that she means business.
Violet gets fully dressed in her house that was connected with the Orphanage, it was a pretty simple place, not fancy as the next building. Her house was made with wood and bricks. The walls are paint blue and the floor has a huge black carpet. There are some books shelf’s on the walls, and her old Typing Machine on a table. But this was only the main room, like said her house was pretty small, one room, two bedrooms - one of them having a bathroom- and one kitchen it’s all she need to live.
Violet open her door and walk out of the house and into a garden, where many of the kids liked to play around after lunch. Some fillies would pick up flowers too.
Violet walks in the Orphanage, which was, build with oak. It started out as a regular house, three floors, the top ones were the dorms for the ponies and the bottom the reception. She was the only worker. But as time passes, she grew the Orphanage, first were some co-workers to help her out, then a playground, more dorms, a bigger shower room, better beds and more luxury on the insides, to give a better impression to the visitors that would come.
Violet enter the Orphanage’s hall. She had hired an interior designer to change the look for the building, it used to be just a regular place, but now it was fancier. The walls were white which really helps to spotlight the brown wood on the floor, doors and corners. The floor also had a long blue carpet that go all over the Mansion.
At the ground floor was the entrance door and in front of it stairs that take you to the the upper dorms. On the walls were many pictures of parties for charity and even some from the “Grand Galloping Galla” that Violet was invite two or three times. Of course she was, she’s running the best Orphanage in Equestria…. At least is what she says, so it must be true.
She look at the grandfather clock that stay at the far left, it was saying “7AM” about time for the kids be woke up by the co-workers and get breakfast. But before she could do that, she heard a knocking at the door. It was early for the mailpony.
“Yes? How can I help you with?” Violet said as she opened the door, letting some more sunlight to enter the hall.
It was a unicorn from the Royal Guard, his fur coat was blue and the same for his mane that was a bit darker color. The unicorn’s armor was gold but a bit more ornate, to show that he had a higher rank, but nothing too special.
“Hello Miss Violet, it was quite some time since the last time I saw you.” Said that guard.
“Oh!” Violet said surprised, “I’m sorry, do I know you from somewhere? I don’t recall your face.”
“Hmmm? Really? It’s me, from high school….” He scratch the back of his head. “We kind used to date.”
Violet was a bit confused for a couple of seconds, but then, she remembered. “No… Night Light?!? Oh, look at you! You really managed to get in the army, didn’t you?”
“Oh yes! As you can see, I did… But, I’m not even close to be the Captain of the Guard… It’s harder than I thought. I don’t think I’ll make it.” He said following with a sigh.
“Not with that attitude.” Violet said before taping his chest with her hoof. “Come on! You were the best student at High School, just put some work on it and you can do it.”
Night Light laugh for a bit but then look down with a smile.
“That’s nice to hear from you, but I’ll have to retire from my Army job. I’ll have to stay at home and take care of my new born filly.”
Violet gasped at it. “No you didn’t!” She then smile and began to hop a bit. “Who is it? Someone from school? Is she Fleur Dis Lee? No! Green Luck? Oh, wait! Was the magic teacher?” After that last guess, she got close to him and gave a wink with a naughty smile.
“What?!” Night Light blushes and get nervous. “Why she?”
“Everyone knows that you always looked at her flank instead of the board.” Violet giggles.
Night Light speak up, trying to change subject. “Anyways! I-I’m here to inform you that a new foal is coming to the orphanage. Well, at least in a couple of months, he is a new born.”
Violet was a bit confuse by it.
“I’m sorry, I’m always happy that a new colt, filly - and even more a cute little foal – to come and live with us until we find him or her a family. But isn’t this supposed to be the Social Agent’s job to come here with the foal?”
“Yes, it is. Miss Silver-” Night Light is interrupt by Violet.
“Oh! Silver Sea! I haven’t seen her in months.”
“… Yeah… Miss Silver is at the hospital, organizing the papers for the foal, I was there at the place… Well, my superior was there at the hospital and they were friends so he sent me here to call you to go there to save the trip.” Night Light finish.
“Oh! Ok then, I guess I can leave now. It must be important. Sun Flower can run the place for this morning… She’s my assistant here.”
Violet walk out of the building and Night Light close the door behind her with his magic. It was a good morning for a walk to the Hospital, even if it’s an 30 minute walk. But it wasn’t a hot day and it was quite cloudy on the skies. The Pegasus were getting ready for the heavy rain in two days.
Violet and Night Light got to the Canterlot Hospital. It was the second biggest Hospital in Equestria, but it’s the best. One of the oldest buildings in the city and to this day it still stands. Different from other contractions, the hospital was made with bricks, making the walls more thick and with the white tiles, it made each room more sound proof, helping on the patients recovery. Multicolor tiles covered the floor, the red ones took you to the emergency, the blue ones to the nursery, the yellow to the recovery room and the purple back to the reception.
There she waits while Night Light talks to a mare nurse, to find where Miss Silver is. After all, they didn’t needed to find her. She walked in the reception. Silver Sea only her mane was silver colored and tied up like a ponytail. Her fur was white and her eyes yellow. You can’t see her cute mark under those busyness cloths.
“Oh! Violet! How I missed you!” She trot to you and give you a hug. “How have you been at the orphanage?”
Violet smiles. “Oh! Just all ok, sometimes the unicorns break something by accident and the Pegasus keep peaking at the bathroom window, so I had to block them until I get some one-way glass.” She said followed by a sigh.
“I see. Those little fillies and colts, always making trouble.” She let go the hug and then levitate an envelope with her magic. “Here it is the lucky lonely foal that is going to your orphanage.”
Violet pick it up with her mouth, trot to a table, placing it on and then opening with her hoof.
Violet notices something wrong when she look on it.
“Dear?” She look at Silver Sea. “I think you made a mistake here. It’s blank.”
Silver Sea scratch her head with her left hoof for a bit.
“Actually, no, take a better look.” She suggested.
Violet looked. Those papers for adoption in Equestria always had the name of the foal, birthday, blood type, body description, the hoof print, type of pony background and the parent’s name. Only a couple of directories are fill up.
“Really? What happened? He was born last week. Where is the mother?” Violet asked tapping the table.
“In the morgue…” Silver Sea said with a deadpan voice.
“Oh… His dad?”
“Sorry, we don’t know who he is. We don’t even know who this mare was either. She just came rushing in the hospital, almost in childbirth. We couldn’t get any info from her… That foal is also nameless…” Silver Sea and Night Light look down.
“Oh my… No name… That’s so sad…” Violet said as she looked on the paper.
“And he is pretty ugly too.” Silver said almost joking.
Violet slams her hoof on the table. “Don’t you riff on the foal!”
“Sorry, sorry. But his face is pretty weird, I mean it. The Doctors are looking if he was having an allergic reaction to something.”
“Ok… But don’t do your dark rumor on the boy again, ok?” Violet said, annoyed.
Silver Sea walk to Violet and put her right hoof on her shoulder. “I said I’m sorry, I won’t do this again… Oh! Night Light!”
He look to her. “Yeah?”
“Could you stay a bit? I’ll need you to take this to the registry. I know how slow things are there, so you could speed the things up” She gave a wink.
“Ok then…” He sighs.
Silver Sea was sitting at the left side of Violet.
“So. Since he has no name. You’ll get to name him.”
“Hmmm…. I think I will need to look him first. I want the name to stick.”
“He is been taking care by the staff, I can go and check how things are.”
“Ok dear, do that. I’ll call Sun Flower.” Violet got up and walked to the hospital phone. She put 2 bits in and began the call.
On the other line, in the orphanage, a unicorn called Sun Flower pick it up with her magic. She had a dark yellow curl mane and her fur was a lighter color of yellow.
“Yes? Rising Sun Orphanage, how can I help you?” She had a country accent.
“It’s me, Violet.” She said, holding the phone with her hoof.
“Oh! Miss Violet, you are outside, some of the fillies and colts were asking where you were.”
“Oh, yes, I’m looking to pick up another foal for the nursery. It might take some time, and I don’t know when I’ll be able to pick him up, but go and make sure that we have a crib for him. If we don’t have, try to call me at the hospital, ok?”
“Ok! And is very nice that it’s a foal, is it an earth pony, unicorn or Pegasus?” She asked while petting the heads of some ponies passing by.
“Hmm….” She look at the documentation. “A Pegasus, why?”
“Well, I was getting tired of the colts flying up to see the filly’s bathroom… Or fillies for that matter…. They do that too.”
“… Ok then. I see you later, it might take long, bye.” She hang the phone and even get her money back since she did that call in less than 3 minutes.
Violet was sitting down with Night Light at the waiting room, most of the tiles were purple, and it helped to spotlight the green plants too. There were couches to sit down and some magazines to read. Also a radio that was turn off.
Sitting there, Violet decided to finish that conversation with Night Light.
“So... Who did you married?” She asked.
Night Light smiles and scratch the back of his head with his right hoof. “Well… Velvet Sparkle.”
Violet smiles at him and then her expression changed to confused. “Who’s that?”
“You… You really don’t remember her? She was in the speech team with you.”
“Oh! That striped mane unicorn?”
Night Light nods.
“Oh! Very nice, you got the jackpot and gained the fatherhood” She tap him with her elbow.
“Actually that’s number two. I already have a son.” The unicorn smiles.
“By Celestia you are fast!” She then saw Silver Sea coming back. “Oh! We finish this later. Dear, how is the young colt?” Violet directed it to Silver Sea.
“He is better now, he was having an allergic reaction to his blanket. They already treated him and now he is at the nursery. Come, is right around the corner.” Silver Sea walked to that direction.
Violet and Night Light followed her to the nursery. Getting there, they saw about 15 foals been displayed there, most of them were unicorn, but there were even less earth ponies. It is normal in Canterlot to most new born be Unicorns.
“So…” Said the Earth Pony. “Who is the colt?”
“Oh! The third from the left, on the middle line.” Said Silver Sea.
There was a really small Pegasus, his mane was brown like caramel, his fur and feathers were a pastel color of his mane. His eyes are still closed.
“Aww… You didn’t told me he was a cute chubby.” Violet said with the same voice that you use when you talk to your pet.
“I didn’t! I really thought it was the allergy! His face was that messed up before.” Silver Sea wave her hoofs around.
“Oh… Ok then. I guess now he needs the name… Hmmm….” Violet began to think on it.
Night Light tried to help. “Well, he is a Pegasus. Maybe something about the sky?”
“How about Big Cloud? Or Nimbus?” Silver Sea said.
“I think the big is not good. But we could try the Cloud part.”
After some talking, Violet choose the name.
“… Thomas…” Violet said, putting her left hoof on the window of the nursery.
“What?” Said Night Light.
“Thomas? What kind of name is that?” Silver Sea said.
“I read on a book from Troidam. It’s a common name there.” Violet said while she still looked at Tom.
Night Light decided to spoke up. “Troidam? Isn’t that huge county, northeast from Equestria?”
“Oh!” Said Silver Sea, “The Fortress Country. I heard about it.”
“Like I said, I think that Thomas is a good name for him…” Violet was with his documents on her hoof, “Where is a typing machine?”
“Ask one of the nurses, they have some at the reception,” Silver suggested, “But what will be his last name?”
“How about Jones?” Night Light suggested.
“That’s sounds so stupid.” Violet and Silver said at the same time.
Violet walked to the reception. She also looked outside, it was getting dark for the time. It was only “8:30AM”, it was getting more cloudy each second, that rain is going to be strong.
A stallion nurse offered her typing machine to be use. She accepted and sat down in a different room behind the reception, where they did all the paper work. Violet put Thomas document in the machine and adjusted it. Then she typed on the paper.
Name: Thomas.
Last Name: *******.
Gender: Male.
Background: Unknown.
The Foal That Came From Nothing
Chapter 2 - The first visit
Four months have passed since Violet has visited the Canterlot Hospital, now coming back, to pick up the new foal. The doctor was giving Thomas a quick check up to make sure he no problems. Also, check his wings.
Violet was guide by a nurse to the clinic room where Thomas was. She knock at the door with her roof and then hear the doc saying that she can come in.
“Hello doctor.” Said Violet. “How is baby Tom?” She asked trotting in, with a little bag with something’s for Thomas, like a pacifier and other baby stuff.
“Oh! Hello there,” Said the Pegasus medic of purple eyes had blue fur and grey mane, a white medic coat cover his fur. “So. I bet that everything is ready to take the little foal in, right?”
“Yeah…” Said Violet. “We found nopony related to him or whoever was that mare… But I’ll find him a good family to stay with.” Violet looked at the Pegasus foal.
He was sitting on the medical bed, his eyes were open, showing that they were a vibrating green. Thomas wore footy pajamas that had holes for his wings too that he was sucking… His wings…. Were pretty big for somepony of his age.
“So… His wings, we talked about this on the phone… Why are they…?” Violet couldn’t finish the sentence.
“So long?” The Doctor Completed, “Well, I asked one of my colleague to use an x-ray spell on his wings to see if it was deformation. But by the looks, it’s normal, the body was constructed to sustain wings of this size. My only guess it’s genetics.”
“Oh, I see. So there is nothing wrong with him.” Violet was trying to confirm everything.
“Yeah. I already gave the little one his shots. He is ready to go.” The medic gave a smile to Tom.
“Ok then,” Violet hold up foal Thomas, “I just need to sign the paper at the reception, right?”
“Yeah, yeah. You already know the procedure.” Said that doctor.
“Ok!” she look at Thomas. “Come on you little chubby, time to you see your new place.” Violet walk out.
Thomas was really hard to hold, he was moving all the time. Kind trying to get down. Violet gave him a pacifier to see if he would stop for a second and he did.
Violet got to the reception and a nurse welcomed her. “Hello Miss Violet, please sign here.” She give her a document that she signs with no problem.
After that, the earth walks out of the Canderlot Hospital and then to the street and call a cab to take her home. The stallion pulling the cab already knew her and so he didn’t had to ask where to go.
Inside the cab, Violet talk to Thomas. “Well my little pony. You’ll love your new home and love even more your new parents when they come.” Violet ‘boops’ his nose making the little Pegasus laugh. “I already got a visit for you. They are Pegasus like you, from Cloudsdale. I bet that you’ll fit very well with them.”
Thomas began to try to flap his wings, but they been too big and heavy that they just hang off him. Violet quickly pick them up, those things could cover him like a blanket.
“I just hope that family has no problem with your wings,” she began to search on her bag. “Did I forgot the Doctor Diagnostic?” She kept pushing around the contents in it and seen that she forgot to ask for it, she’ll have to call later and ask to be sent in the mail.
The cab soon arrive to the Orphanage and it began to rain right away. Still sitting in the cab, Violet screams for Sunflower to come and help her. After a couple of minutes the entrance door is open and Sunflower uses her magic to levitate a huge umbrella over Violet’s and the foal’s head. She pay the driver and then quickly walk in the building.
“Why it always rains when a new baby comes?” Said Sunflower, closing the door and making sure Violet didn’t brought any water on the carpet. “So. Where is the little foal?”
“Right here.” Violet is sitting on the floor holding Thomas with her hoofs.
Sunflower levitates him to her. “Let me see this big boy!” She hold him up with magic and then see his huge wings hanging off his back. “Wow! What in tarnation? You didn’t lied about his wings, did someone forgot to tell them to stop grow-” Before She could finish her half-backed joke. Thomas began to cry and kick. “Oh… You brought him, you do it.”
Violet pick him back. “Weird,” She check his diaper. “It’s not it.” She began to hold him again, trying to calm him down, and it worked. Now Thomas was smiling and trying to ‘boop’ Violet’s nose.
Sunflower got a bit upset. “Why the foals always like you more?” She began to walk to the nursery been followed by Violet. “Feels like I’m the bad auntie in this house.”
Violet gave Thomas a kiss on the head.
“They are just too young to know how nice you are.”
“Yeah, yeah… Oh! That family that marked a visit to see the foals just got here.” Sunflower said.
“What?!? Already? They should only come in two hours!” Violet began to get nervous, she didn’t had to give Thomas a bath and also get the Medical Diagnostic.
“They said that they couldn’t wait to see the…hmm… Thomas… Sorry, his name still feels weird to say.”
“When they got here? How long they have been waiting?” Violet yelled, but not too loud.
“I think about 20 minutes. They are drinking some tea at the waiting room.”
“They waited for too long! Sunflower! Get them and tell that they can come and see Thomas.” Violet runs to the nursery.
Sunflower signs and turn around. She wasn’t in a hurry, Violet was just really fixed about giving a good first impression, didn’t wanted the families to wait any more than five minutes.
Sunflower got to the waiting room, she slowly opens the door to see the Pegasus couple sitting and talking to each other. The mare had a pale amber color for her fur and her mane was raspberry. The stallion had a malachite green for fur and his mane was a light grey.
“Hello. You are the Shy family, right?” Said Sunflower.
“Oh! Yes, that’s us.” Said the Stallion as they got up, and walked to her.
“Yes, yes. We are so excited to see this foal Pegasus that Violet talked about on the phone.” Said the mare.
“Yeah, Thomas. He is really cute too, just four months old too.” Sunflower pinted out.
Now she and the couple were walking on the corridor going to the nursery, there were some signs to show the way to other parts of the Orphanage, like the cafeteria and the library.
“Hmm… I’m sorry. What was his name again?” Said the stallion, seen the name strange.
“Oh! Sorry, his name is Thomas, an exotic named Violet choose for him. If you two want, you can change when you adopt him. Like I said, he is just four months old.” She waited for their reply.
“Hmmm…” They looked at each other and the mare said. “I guess we’ll change when we adopt him.” They both nod together.
“Ok!” Sunflower smiled. “This is the nursery.” She showed the door that had a sky blue color and the words ‘Nursery’ on the top. Sunflower opens the door for them. “Here, you two first.”
As the Shy couple enter the room, they see first Miss Violet, smiling on the middle of the room.
“Hello! You two must be the Shy Family, a pleasure to meet you two.” She shake their hoofs. “So, I guess you two want to see the foal now, right?” Violet see them nodding to her with a smile. “Great! I’m sorry if he’s not presentable right now. I wasn’t expecting you two so soon.”
“Well,” Said the stallion. “We didn’t wanted to wait too long and our hotel room will be only ready in three hours, so…” They smile.
“Oh! So you two are visiting the city. Where are you two from again? Cloudsdale, right?” Violet walked to Thomas crib.
“Yes, we are visiting for a week, and we decided to see the orphanage first. We think that a new baby brother for our daughter will be good for her. Someone to play with.” Said the mare.
“Oh! So you already have a daughter?” Said Sunflower.
“A-and a son… but he is… busy with school…” Sais the Stallion. “You know how that is.” He looked a bit unconvertible about it.
“I see. Well, I bet that you two will love this little guy. He is pretty quiet to tell the truth.” Violet present the Shy family, Thomas, laying in his crib, wearing ocean blue footy pajamas.
“Aaawwww! Let me see this guy,” Said the mare, who trots to the foal and look him over. “Hey there, how are you?” The mare blushes as she finds the Pegasus quite cute.
The stallion fly to the other side of the crib. “Oh yes. He looks quite health too.” They didn’t noticed that Thomas was getting a bit annoyed by they looking at him. “Can we pick him up?” He asked to Violet.
“Oh! Of course, remember to be gentle, Thomas is a bit fragile.” Said Violet.
“Oh, don’t worry. Our Fluttershy was also like that.” The mother holds Thomas up and take a good look at him. “Oh my, you are a quite heavy…” Then, Thomas wings drops and hang from his back, looking even bigger now. “…Pegasus…” She and her husband were quite surprised.
“Well, these are quite big for his age.” He tried to laugh off. “I bet he’ll be a great flier someday.”
Violet got in the conversation, a bit nervous. “Oh! Well, you see. The doctor said that the wings are genetic. No anomalies at all.”
“Oh…! I see, I guess his father must have been a griffon of some sort.” Right after that. Thomas was getting annoyed, he began to move his hoofs around and wave his wings. He was making baby noises and looking like he wanted to cry. “Oh! Honey, put him back in the crib, I think you are hurting him.” He instructed his wife.
“Yes, yes,” She put him back there, but was too late, and he began to cry. “Oh no! Don’t cry little buddy.” She looked around. “What I do to stop him from crying?”
“One minute!” Violet quickly hold Thomas and began to bub him up, and down. After a bit, she put the pacifier in his mouth too. “There, there Thomas, there, there…” Thomas soon stops and was suckling the pacifier, almost going to sleep.
This was a bad first impression, not only the suspicion of deformation with Thomas long wings, but he also the crying. Most foals aren’t attached to Violet this fast since, ever. Thomas was probably a first time case. Violet had to work it out and not let that family give up on Tom. She need to do something to make them forget about what just happened.
The mare spoke up. “So, is there any way to help us bond with him?”
Maybe not.
“Oh! Well, we got some toys, you two can play with him for a while. But I still don’t know what toys he likes.” Said Violet.
“This sounds perfect.” The husband said.
“Yes, you would like to play, won’t you little one?” The wife was going to touch Thomas back with her hoof. But he wing slaps her.
“Tom!” Violet almost yelled at him. “Don’t be such a bad pony.” Thomas looked at her with tired eyes. “Oh! He is tired, that’s why.”
“Oh! That’s explain a lot, doesn’t it?” Said the husband, followed by his wife.
“Yes, yes. Let him rest, we can talk more about the adoption while that.” She proposed.
“Oh, thank you.” Violet put Thomas back in the crib and cover him with a blanket. “Good dreams,” she sees Sunflower on the door. “Sunny? Take a look on Thomas while we go out, please.”
She nods and walks in.
Violet thanks her and invite the Shy family to visit the Orphanage’s library. It was an old part of the building, is not that big or filled with knowledge, but had some books for the ponies to read and don’t having to take a long trip to the other libraries in the town. Not speaking of having to bring a gown up to guide them.
On the way of the library, the wife decided to start the conversation there.
“So. About the adoption. How soon are we going to take the Pegasus in?” The wife asked her.
“Hey honey, we don’t know if we are going to take him in yet.” The husband whispered.
“Well, probably in about a couple of days. Just because of the paper work and the Doctor’s Diagnostic that I forgot to take.” Violet cleans her throat. “I guess on Monday will be the day.”
“O-oh, I see. How about the name. Can we change right away too?” The husband scratch his head. “I’m sorry, but I think he’ll be bulled with this one.”
“Well, that can be done when you two sign the adoption papers.” Violet and the family reach the library room. “What name are you two thinking?”
“Well,” said the wife, “Caramel Feather…. Maybe.”
“Come on, that’s a mouthful.” Said the husband.
“Maybe Green Feather? Because of his eyes.”
“I think is best if we discuss the name later. I want to know more about the adoption.” Said that husband.
They both enter the library, like it was said, there were many books in there, but nothing advance, mostly fiction books on the lower parts and the education a bit higher, the little ones prefer to read made up stories.
“Well, go ahead, ask, there is not much to go through besides what I said.” Violet sat down in front of a table.
The Shy family follow her and sit on the other side and the husband spoke to Violet.
“So, I wanted to know how many other Pegasus are in the ‘Rising Sun’.”
“Well, there is only Thomas, really. We receive ponies from many places around Equestria, but Pegasus have been a few lately. But that varies a lot with when. 6 years ago this place was fill with Pegasus and earth ponies. But now is mostly earth ponies.”
“I understand and I heard that there are so many ponies giving their foals to orphanages lately.” Said the wife. “Like it’s a trend now. So sad…”
“Yes. This is happening quite a lot lately. There were other Orphanages asking me and others big ones to take in some of the foals coming in, because they were getting overwhelmed.” Violet looked down.
“And you agreed?” Asked the wife.
“Of course I did! They are in a train right at this moment…. I think… They are still organizing the trip so they won’t waist too much money.”
“But won’t this be worse for them? Stuck there for more time that they could save just sending them right away?” Asked the husband.
Violet sighs. “Yes, but not all of them are like my Orphanage. The main reason for sending them here is the money. They can’t pay for the food for all of them, even worse if they get sick. Is nothing greedy, it is just how things work,” She took a moment to take some air. “I’m sorry. Is that many ponies that I come across say that those Orphanages only want to keep the money and make a profit.”
“It’s pretty sad to know.” Said the mare. “I hope they get here safe and sound.”
“Yes.” Said the husband.
The three kept talking about the adoption for about an hour or so. Only to make sure that all paper work was ready and there was no problems. After that, they returned to the nursery, to see Thomas. In there Sunflower was looking over Thomas suckling a milk bottle.
“Oh! Looks like the little champion already woke up.” Said the mare.
“Oh! Tom woke up some time ago, he looked hungry so I gave him a bottle.” Sunflower smiles and let Thomas walk on the floor. He walks dragging his wings on the floor, making them dirty.
“Well, I think we’ll have to tie a rope around his wings, right?” The husband joked.
The wife walks a bit closer to him and lower her head. “Come here Thomas, let’s play?” She said to the little Pegasus, who only glances at her and walk to the toys. “Hmmm… I guess he want to play with those.” There were some blocks, plushies and other stuff for foals to play with.
The wife trotted to Tom and tried to play with him, but the little foal only ignores her and tries to trot away from her.
“Don’t worry,” said Sunflower, “I bet that he is just shy, he is only four months old after all.”
“Yes.” Violet trots to the wife and Thomas. “I can help you two bond, don’t worry.” Right when she sat down, Thomas walked to her left, hiding from the other mare. “Dear, don’t be rude.” She tries to pick him up and put between her and the mare, but he only tried to trot away or just wing slap her.
“This one is a hard guy, isn’t he Violet?” Said Sunflower.
“Heh!” She laugh a bit, “I had worse.” But it wasn’t helping. She can say by experience, looking to the Shy family’s face that they are starting to rethink the adoption, it’s common with some couples that had an bad first impression of a foal. “Don’t worry, he is just 4 months old. He’ll attach to you two soon enough.”
The husband and Wife look at each and other for a couple of moments.
“Well, I guess you are right. Listen, we need to get to the hotel now, we’ll be back tomorrow at the same time and try to bond with Thomas… Well… If it’s not a problem, of course.” Said the husband.
“Of course! Come back at any time. I’ll love to help you two spend some good time with Tom. He seems pretty attached to me, you know?” Said Violet.
“Yes.” The wife gets up and then the couple walks to the door. “See you three tomorrow.”
“See you two tomorrow too.” Said Violet as the Shy Family walked out.
Time has passed and the next day the Shy Family came back for the visit. They tried to bond with Thomas again with Violet at their side. But it wasn’t going as planned. Thomas kept ignoring them for days. Violet tried to everything she knew to help the couple. The wife tried to sing Thomas to sleep, feed him or just pet Thomas. But he only rejected the acts and always cried. It was like all over the week. Violet tried to stay some time away from Thomas and see if he would detach from her. But he would kick and cry.
The other week. Violet was in her officer when she heard someone knocking at her door. She trotted and opened the door.
“Yes?” Asked Violet.
It was Sunflower.
“It’s the Shy Family again. They are in the waiting room.”
“Thank you.” Violet trots off her officer and quickly gets to the room where the Shy Family was waiting in. “Hello.”
“Oh! Miss Violet.” Said the wife. “We wanted to talk to…”
“It’s about Thomas.” The Husband finished.
“Oh! Yes, you two are going back to Cloudsdale this night. Are you waiting to fill the adoption papers?” Violet waited for an answer but the Shy Family was silent and looked down for a moment, appearing sad. “Oh… you two…”
“I’m truly sorry Violet.” The husband spoke up.
The wife tried to explain. “Yes! Is that… Thomas and Us…. Are just… Not connecting…”
“I don’t know if he’ll be a good brother to our Fluttershy.”
“We just don’t want to give the foal back to you after we see that he… We just don’t want to take the rick…” The wife finished.
Violet sigh “Don’t worry Miss and Mister Shy, I was already expecting this. I also don’t want Thomas in a family that he doesn’t fit in.” She gets up with the Shy Family. “Have a good trip back to Cloudsdale.”
“Yes, we will.” The husband Replied.
“And we hope that Thomas find his own family soon.” The wife nods to her and the couple walks out.
After they were outside the Orphanage, Violet sighed and walked back to the nursery. Sunflower was putting some stuff back in a wardrobe that was foal proof. Thomas was sitting down on his crib, looking at the door, as if he was waiting for Violet.
She walked him and then kissed his head. “Don’t worry, I’ll get you a family before your birthday.”
