"Whatever happened to escorting Twilight to her chambers after that incident last night and returning to the ball? Did you think a little spilled wine and embarrassment was enough to excuse yourself for the rest of the evening?" Luna sucked a lungful of air in. Her eyes fell closed for a brief moment before popping opened, her fury still unquenched. "Do you have any idea of the hell I had to endure after you left?"
"And here I thought you wanted more royal responsibility." A smile spread across Celestia’s face.
"That is not what I meant by—" she took a small step forward when something caught her hoof. She glanced down at the offender, a pale blue piece of cloth. With a swift kick of her foreleg she sent the balled fabric sailing across the room. She honed her gaze back on her sister and opened her mouth once more, but before even a single syllable was uttered, Luna stopped herself. Her eyes fell back onto the blue fabric, now unfurled on the floor—a dress with stars embroidered into the skirt.
"Celestia, you didn’t." As if treading through a swamp Luna’s eyes slowly moved back to her sister, finding her still smirking. A small shuffle under the covers drew Luna’s gaze down slightly where a dark blue matted mess of mane with a purple horn poked free from the sheets.
Luna closed her eyes once more and inhaled a steady, deep breath as her whole body shook. "You left me at that party alone after the scene the both of you caused so you could, as the kids say, get some action?" she asked through firmly clenched teeth. The muscles in Luna’s neck stood out, visible even under her dark coat. She popped her eyes opened as she stood there, panting with a fiery gaze locked on her sister.
Celestia glanced down at Twilight still fast asleep with a slight furrow to her brow. "Well, look at it this way. At least there’s some validity to the rumors now, right?"
Luna screamed, but could not pull her teeth apart. "Yes, and that means a frustratingly wasted evening," she replied through her still clenched jaw. She spun around with her mane whirling behind and tucking neatly in the nape of her neck with tail sweeping behind. "I need to go, lest I say something I regret."
"Don’t be like that, Luna."
"You left me to clean up your mess! I believe I’m entitled to being upset!" Luna slammed a hoof forward to storm out of her sister’s chamber, but a yellow glow squeezed the shifting mass of her tail, tugging her back towards the bed.
"And after a thousand years I don't deserve some companionship?" Celestia raised a brow, the smirk on her face a distant memory. "You had the reins for one night. Now you know how I’ve felt for the last millennium."
Luna winced. She glanced over her shoulder to see her sister’s stare fixed on her, unflinching. Finally, she sighed. "Abandoning me doesn’t make it right."
"It doesn’t," Celestia nodded, "but I didn’t have much choice in the matter with Twilight throwing herself at me—literally."
"Turning her down wasn’t an option?" Luna raised an eyebrow herself.
"I did, and you see how well that ended up.” She motioned to the unconscious alicorn next to her just as Twilight placed a foreleg over Celestia. “But even if you didn’t intend to shoulder the evening yourself, I do appreciate it, Luna."
Luna took another deep breath, and sighed. "Just," she rolled her eyes, "don’t let it happen again." She took a step, and Celestia’s magic around her tail vanished.
“Thank you, Luna,” Celestia said softly.
Once she cleared the door, she shot a piercing glare back at her sister. “Don’t assume this means I’ve forgiven you.” She tilted her snout high. “For the next ball you might end up with rumors of young Flurry Heart being yours and Cadance’s love child to answer to.” With a snap of her head and a loud ‘humph’ hanging in the air, Luna stormed out of sight, leaving the two guards trembling in place to breathe a sigh of relief. Once nodded to Celestia before he closed the door with his magic.
As soon as the door shut, a strained groan came from under Celestia’s sheets. Twilight’s head rose, eyes fluttering, jaw slack, and her normally well-kept mane a tattered mess strewn about. She smacked her lips a few times before finally managing to keep her eyes opened, even if it was only halfway.
She groaned again and winced. "Spike, remind me never to drink again."
"I’ll let him know when I see him next," Celestia said in a soft, warm tone.
Twilight’s ears stood straight and her body went stiff. "P-Princess?"
"Yes?"
Twilight peeked with one eye. Once she saw Celestia she snapped straight up with both eyes wide opened. "Did the commotion wake you up as well?"
Celestia let out a small chuckle. "I’m sorry. It was Luna and I making that commotion. Did we wake you?" Celestia asked as she ran a hoof over Twilight’s mane, pushing the stray strands straight once more.
"N-no! Of course not. The sun’s up, I should be up too." Twilight let out an uneven laugh as she plastered a wide smirk across her face. As Celestia chuckled at Twilight’s expense, the smaller princess winced and swiftly brought her hoof to the side of her head.
"What even happened last—" Twilight cut herself off. Her eyes grew wide and face red. The ears once perked perfectly straight slowly fell flat against her head.
"What seems to be the matter, Twilight?" Celestia moved her face close to Twilight’s matching the blushing mare’s saucer-sized eyes. Twilight covered her mouth with the hoof from her forehead and backed up slightly, but Celestia pressed forward, placing her forehead against her former student’s.
"You don’t seem to have a fever," she said through a small smirk. "Maybe it’s something else that has you so warm?"
"W-we—" Twilight blurted out from behind her hoof.
Celestia pulled her head back and gave a small nod.
"I-I’m so sorry!" Twilight snapped the hoof from her mouth onto Celestia’s own on the bed next to her. "Last night was a disaster! I embarrassed you in front of all of Canterlot!" Twilight gasped. "And Luna! We left her there alone—"
"Twilight," Celestia silenced the other mare with that simple utterance. "Last night is in the past, and I’m sure there’s been countless rumors about us since you hit puberty."
Twilight’s head dropped slightly and she gave a small nod.
"Besides, what’s the worst they say? We’re together? That doesn’t sound so awful to me."
Again Twilight snapped straight. "N-not at all!"
Celestia smiled. "You don’t seem so convinced. And you were worried some rogue stallion would snatch my hoof." She placed a small peck on Twilight’s forehead lighting the young mare’s face ablaze once more. “I should have seen through your schemes, Ms. Sparkle.”
“I-I didn’t—” Twilight waved a frantic hoof.
Celestia pressed a hoof to Twilight's mouth. "I'm only teasing. Now, it's late and we should get a move on with our day."
Twilight nodded, and a sudden flash of pain stabbed through her brain. She winced. “This whole mess was all the alcohol’s fault!” she whined pressing a hoof to her forehead and rubbing softly.
Celestia nodded. "Indeed it was. So at future events, I do hope you abstain from it. Even if rumors happen to hold a kernel of truth, it’s not a good idea to flaunt in front of our subjects." She gave a small wink followed by a quick flash of her tongue from her lips as soon as Twilight peeked out from one of her eyes.
Her face lit up red, and she gave a small, soft nod.
