Change, it happens every single second of the day whether you notice it or not.
You sit there, staring critically at the sentence you just wrote. It just doesn't look right but what could be wrong with it? With an exasperated sigh, you push the paper away. Looking up at your cluttered desk, you see pictures. Pictures of ponies that you knew. Some pictures were new others were more worn down.
"You could have helped them you know,"
"I don't have the time,"
Your head hurts as the two voices speak.
"How could you say that! You have all the time in the world!"
"Help them, only so they can forget about me behind later on!"
The voices of your past decisions haunt you. With a shaky breath, you stand up and look around your room. The feature that dominates the room is shelves with items and trinkets from times long gone and passed. Each item came with a memory that you wanted to forget. Even if the memory slipped away, the voices of your past mistakes always reminded you.
"You have changed since it happened,"
"I-"
"Don't, just don't. I'm the only pony who stayed your friend even after everypony else left, I stayed. I thought I could make you like you used to be! But you didn't seem to want to be who you used to be. Now, I'm leaving too,"
"I'm sorry!" you shout in despair. "I would do anything to go back and have just one day before all this," but no otherworldly ears heard your plea. You curled up into a ball on your bed tears falling from your eyes hoping that it was all just a nightmare. One that you would wake up from soon. There would be no waking up, no mysterious help from a being unknown, no friend nearby to help. Just you and your thoughts.
"It's funny, isn't it, while I lay here old and dying, you stand there still as young and strong as the day I met you,"
"It wasn't-" you try to say, but the voices of the past interrupt you.
"I'll see you on the other side right?"
"St-"
"You can leave me here. It won't matter even if you did take me,"
"That's not-"
"You're a liar and a cheat!"
"I didn't mean-"
"You should have told me from the start!"
"I meant-"
"Why should I help somepony who will leave me behind in the long run?"
"I wouldn't-"
"Just leave me alone. I don't need you in my life right now!"
"I-"
"Why would you do that?"
"I-"
"Is it fair that every good-willed pony dies while ponies like you live?"
"Stop!" you yell out, tears are still falling from your eyes. To your surprise the voices become silent. After a moment of silence, two voices start to speak.
"Was it worth it?"
"What are you-"
"You know what I'm talking about, don't play dumb with me,"
"I-"
"No. Give me the truth, I don't want a lie or a half truth. Only the full honest truth,"
"I... no, it wasn't,"
"Then why?"
"Life was too short and, I wanted to see more,"
"You saw your fair share of more correct?"
"Yes and then some,"
"Alright then let me ask you a question,"
"Okay,"
"What the point of living forever if you're all alone?"
"I..."
"That's what I thought,"
Looking up with your tear stained face, you look at the many pictures of the ponies you met throughout the years. The most recent picture was a mare with a light blue coat, a dark purple mane, and amber eyes. You miss all of them, all of the ponies you met; all of them long gone.
The mare, however, tugged at your heart strings more than the others did. Why? You didn't know. You felt longing to just live a normal life, but you squandered that life long ago.
"Hello?" a voice says followed by a knock. "Anypony here?" Looking at the door, you consider ignoring the pony. After a bit, of, thought you reluctantly decide to ask what she wants.
"Yes," you say making sure to keep your emotions out of your tone. "What do you want?"
"Well, I live a room over and, I heard some crying. So, I thought I would ask if you are alright. Are you?" she asked. Far from it, I thought
"If you knew I was here why did you ask if somepony was here?" you ask.
"I just wanted to make sure," she said. After a short silence, she spoke again. "You didn't answer my question. Are you okay?"
"Why would you ask me that?" you ask.
"Because, I care," the mare said with a certainty. Care, a word you haven't heard directed at you in a long time. Your mind is a whirlwind, how can somepony else care about me? Why would they? You're ripped out of your thoughts when she speaks again. "Well if you want to talk, I'm next door, alright?" she waits a couple seconds for you to respond but you're left with no words to say. You hear hoof steps outside as she walks away. One voice speaks in the silence.
"Sometimes it's best to remember before you forget,"
You know the voice well but the name is lost to you, the meaning of what the voice said ,however, is not lost on you. You remembered and now it's time to forget.

Author's Note
Looking over this story now, I see the potential for a bigger story. Also:
but we have no background knowledge of what the main character went through before this point other than some expeditionary dialogue that doesn't clear much up.
The expository dialogue was meant to give knowledge while withholding the full truth, and I can see how without a story before to explain it, it doesn't tell as much as I thought it would (
a mistake on my part.) Anyhow, I might write a prequel to this, it will be much longer than this story of course. However, I'm already working on another long story as of now, so until it's either finished or nearing completion I'm going to have to put this idea away for a later date.
