An Overgrown Attachment
Chapter 1: Arrival
Load Full StoryNext ChapterYou wanted to get away from the bustling city life of Manehattan, hoping for something more, and you think you may have found it here, in Ponyville.
Everypony that you've met has been so kind and welcoming. You were even given your own honorary party the very first day you came, thrown by a pink pony by the name of Pinkie Pie. There you were able to meet so many others. The many ponies who attended, all gave you so much attention and respect, a comforting contrast to the neglectful attitude found in the city. They even offered suggestions on where the hottest spots in town were.
During your soirée, a Rainbow-maned pony approached you and gave you an offer. She stuck out her hoof, to which you responded by putting out your own. A hoof-shake soon followed, revealing just how strong this pony was. You were a little taken back by her power, but nonetheless, listened to what she had to say.
"Hi, I'm Rainbow Dash" she said in a proud voice. "I see you're our newest pegasus pony," she continued, glaring down at your wings.
"Oh yeah, I just came from..."
"Well," she interrupted, "I need a new flyer for Ponyville's weather team," Rainbow said with a growing smile.
You didn't really feel up for the task. You might've considered it later, if this wasn't your very first day in Ponyville. You just wanted to get used to this place before trying to pick up a new job, so you decided to graciously decline the offer.
You began, "I really appreciate the offer, but I don't think..."
"Great! I'll let the other flyers know that you're joining!" she once again interrupted.
"Wait, what! No, I..." but you didn't get the chance to retort, as she soon flew off.
You breathe a heavy sigh, annoyed that you already had something to take your time away from meeting new ponies. Whelp, better use the time you still have to do just that.
You scan the room, looking for anypony that you find approachable, when you find a gentle yellow pony, with a pink mane slowly approach you. You can tell she is freakishly afraid of you. Her eyes won't even meet your gaze, as she slowly shakes towards you. Then, when she is only a few feet away, she turns and heads back the same way she came.
You have no idea what's going on, but you see another pony, with a pristine white fur coat and a beautifully brushed purple mane, ushering this scared yellow pony in your direction, from the other side of the room.
The yellow pony shakes her head in fear, and looks as if she's about to break down. Then, the white pony, now annoyed, approaches her and pushes her in your direction.
You don't know what to do and you begin to wonder if anypony else is seeing what's happening. But before you're able to find the answer to your own question, the bodies of two ponies are standing before you.
The white pony clears her throat and begins while her hoof stretches out to you, "Hello there, darling. My name is Rarity, and this is my friend Fluttershy."
As you shake the hoof of Rarity, she continues. "We just wanted to officially welcome you to Ponyville."
"Thank you. I'm glad to be here" you respond, with a beaming smile on your face.
Soon your eyes notice that Fluttershy is cowering behind her hooves and mane, still not having said a word or planning on doing so.
Your worried expression catches the attention of Rarity. "She's a little bit shy," she says, trying to reassure you.
"Oh, ok."
"So what brings you to Ponyville?" Rarity asks.
"Well, I've lived in the city my whole life. I just wanted something a bit more, I don't know, personal. There isn't any nature where I'm from, just bland buildings and infrastructure."
You notice that Fluttershy's ears had peaked up when you mentioned the word "nature."
You can see Rarity conjuring a thought in her head. Then she began, "Well, darling, if you're looking for somepony to show you Ponyville's wildlife, I know just the pony."
"Oh really! Who?" You ask with excitement.
You'd lived your whole life without seeing a deer, blue robin, or even something as simple as a rabbit. You were elated at the thought of seeing one, possibly even having your own as a pet. They didn't allow pets in the city, so now you thought about finally having that opportunity.
"Fluttershy, here, can show you all the animals and critters that Ponyville has to offer" said Rarity.
"Oh really!?" you say, sounding very impressed, but more excited about the thought of having your own pet.
After your enthusiastic outburst, you can see Fluttershy beginning to reveal herself from her hooves, seeming as if she was actually building up the courage or eagerness to speak.
Fluttershy begins, "Oh yes. Ponyville has so many cute little critters!" You realize how soft and soothing her voice is, as if her voice is at a constant whisper. You would have begun to dose off it is wasn't for your keenness of possibly getting a pet.
You and Fluttershy begin talking more and more about the nature in town, and you get so enveloped in the conversation that you don't even notice Rarity had left you two alone. With every question you ask, and every answer you receive, you learn a lot about the animals, and even more about Fluttershy.
You learn how friendly and kind she is, and how much she cares for the animals, giving you an even better feeling that the right pony will be helping you get a pet.
After about a half hour of you two talking, you're eagerness finally takes over.
"When can we go see those critters?" you ask like a yearning child.
"Well, um, we could go see them now... if you want."
"YES!" you said without hesitation.
Your shout scared Fluttershy a bit, but she soon responded, "Oh, ok."
The two of you left the party, after you thanked Pinkie Pie for it of course. You trotted through the dirt paths of Ponyville, still admiring the new buildings of this new place. However, your mind quickly finds itself thinking about the animals again.
Before you know it, you find that the path you two are walking on, leads to a cabin that seems to be built by nature itself. It looks to be made completely of vegetation, and surrounded by bird houses.
"This is my cottage. There's usually a lot of cute creatures around here" Fluttershy informs you.
Your anticipation builds as you continue to approach the building. You can't wait to finally be able to see, even hold a cute little animal in your hooves.
Then, when you're only a few hooves away from the cottage, you see it: a small bunny coming out from a nearby bush. You freeze, almost not believing your eyes, while Fluttershy calmly walks up to it.
"Hello Angel," she says in her calm voice. "I have a friend with me who is new to Ponyville, and has never seen any animal before."
The bunny somehow seems to understand Fluttershy, as it looks from her to you, and then back to her.
"C-Can I pet it?" you ask her, being so eager, yet a little nervous.
"Oh, I don't know. Angel would you be okay with that?" she asks the small bunny.
It just shakes its head in disapproval. You're quickly saddened by this rejection. But, you soon see Fluttershy whispering in its ear, something about a carrot stew. The bunny's face immediately lights up, as it furiously waves its head up and down.
You once again regain your enthusiastic nature. You reach out a hoof to the small bunny, touching its soft fur and caressing it. You watch as the bunny's posture changes and its stiffness relaxes into jello. Barely anytime passes before you relax the bunny into submission and it falls asleep.
"Wow! I've never seen anypony put an animal to sleep that fast before!" she says with utter amazement.
"I guess I'm a natural" you say jokingly.
Fluttershy, however, doesn't respond, her head obviously deep in thought.
Concerned, you ask, "Are you okay?"
It takes her a few moments to shake her head from whatever thought clouded her mind. She blushes for a second before answering. "I'm fine. Thank you. Would you like to see the rest of the animals?" she asks with hopeful eyes.
You don't see why not. There were still so many other animals to see, so you happily accept.
The next few hours is spent admiring the many different types of life that Fluttershy points out. And with each turn, your fascination of the nature grows.
Eventually though, it was time to go. There were other things that you still needed to do. You thank Fluttershy for having given you this opportunity. She seems upset to see you go, but you let her know that you'd like to do this again sometime, which lifts her spirit a bit.
You turn around and head back to Ponyville, while Fluttershy's saddened eyes are out of your vision.
