Changelings are not bugs.

All the more reason for me to be awake at night.
With a wince, my ass still sore, I scrambled out of the hole awkwardly and shook sharp spines from my chitin. I then glanced about once more—it was never an issue to be too careful in a this business—and took to the sky, buzzing slowly. My wings felt heavy and to move them was a feat; my stomach was so full from all the lust still that it took its toll on my athleticism. But that was better than the alternative, I reminded myself.
That was when I saw it; the Everfree Forest. It was fabled to be an incredibly dangerous place to live—but for a creature who could transform into a rock at will? Not so much.

And so, with a stomp of my hoof and a quick glance about to be sure I was not followed, I stepped onto the little-worn path which headed into the depths.
It didn't take long, I was surprised to find, to make my way through the forest. It was dark and damp and dingy; ideal for a changeling hive. But finding the exact spot to begin building... That was more complex.
Or maybe not.
A deafening roar sounded just behind me, signalling that there was something I had missed. But I was far from upset or scared at the prospect of some wild beast attacking me; rather, I was excited. That roar was almost certainly belonging to a cragodile, which could mean only one thing; there was a swamp nearby. Where there was a swamp, there was a readily available source of water. But, more significantly, it was an almost foolproof hiding place!
Though I felt tired, I hastened to encase my body in armor and elongate my horn. I then let my wings grow larger and shivered as the cool feeling of metal formed on the tips. I then reared up and let my body grow, grinning as I saw my frame becoming bulkier.
The cragodile seemed hardly put out, however; it merely roared and bit its teeth together in a challenge—a challenge that I was more than willing to accept.
I leapt into the air as the great beast lumbered towards me and I winced as it's teeth clamped down on my tail. I flapped my wings heavily as the cragodile then dragged me back to the ground with a hiss, its tongue flicking around my hoof.
Well, there was nothing for it. Angling my head downwards, I grinned as I folded my steel-tipped wings away—and winced as the sharp metal brushed my own chitin—and let myself fall. As expected, the cragodile let go of me immediately, but it was already too late. My horn impaled a groove in its head and a thin trickle of muddy blood began to ooze out. Not quite the strike I had hoped for, but it was a start.
The beast roared louder and I leapt aside, yelping as its claws slashed against my hoof. It would heal, of course, but the sight of the blood which spurted freely from the wound was terrifying. It took all of my will power to not cower and hide; instead I gritted my teeth and, with a grumble and groan, replaced the steel with pure diamond. I was gasping after the transformation, naturally—making the hardest known substance in the world in vast quantities was exhausting. Nevertheless, I just about kept steady on my hooves and managed to stumble forwards in some weak attempt at an attack—but the cragodile was faster.
It's maw was repulsive, a fact which I became well aware of when it wrapped its mouth around my muzzle. I groaned and writhed as I feebly flapped my heavy wings, prodding the back of its throat with my elongated horn. When my mark was finally true and I caught it sharply, it then roared and released its hold slightly, instead biting down on my horn.
Oh, Chrysalis! The pain was unbearable and a scream tore itself from my mouth. No one would blame me, of course; I yelled in agony as I finally felt myself be released from the creature's mouth, half of my horn roughly bitten off with it.
The blood flowed from my horn in torrents, but I had no strength left to fix it now, only to close the major arteries. My head throbbed as I did so and, whilst I watched the cragodile approaching with my blurring vision, I suddenly began to wonder if the ideal hive spot was worth it. But I couldn't stop now, not when I was so close—and so, when the cragodile roared once more and opened it's mouth to encase my body, I snapped out a heavy wing and let the diamond strike its cheek.
If the blood from my horn had been bad, I wasn't sure how to describe the sight before me. The cragodile's mouth now partially hung from its head, useless with every nerve and bone severed. The blood flowed heavily and coated my body, but I was too exhausted to really care. And, to my relief, the cragodile was too injured to carry on as well; it slunk backwards slowly, roaring in pain, and kept its distance when I hissed at it. I then slunk slowly towards the swamp and let my legs crumple while I curled up at the side. I then closed my eyes, whimpered a little and let myself simply lay there. Not sleeping, nor being rutted. Just resting—and honestly, it was a heavenly feeling.

Known simply to changelings instead as “gum”, it was useful for capturing hostages, for feeding larvae and for building, but that didn’t mean it was the sole substance from which a home was made. Rather, it was more of a glue; a cement, if you will.
A changeling hive, instead, was made from the love harvested by either drones or queen. It required careful preparation to ensure its stability, and frequently the gum would be used to stabilise the walls. But no drone, nor a drone-turned-queen, knew of the spell; each had to find it out for themselves if they were to form a new hive, as a mark of their strength and intellect as a leader. And until I knew that, I could not use it—but I did not need to, anyway.
Many young females, naïve and filled with scandalous thoughts of going out on their own once they earned their adult fangs, would fail in the endeavour. The few that managed to collect enough pure love—and learn how to use it—to sustain themselves and build a hive fared slightly better, but it was far from unheard of that a new hive would be destroyed when the walls collapsed in on the young ones. It looked ridiculous for sure and did little to help my chill, but rabbits were powerful diggers and that was what I needed right now.
How did ponies manage?
I began slowly, scraping away at the muddy earth until I found a spot at the edge that, for some reason, just felt right. I then hastened in my digging, scooping out larger quantities with each second. As I did so, I opened my mouth and coughed a little, groaning until I felt the liquid lust pour from my muzzle; a fatty substance, it was thankfully immiscible with the stale water of the swamp. Hence, with gritted teeth, I slowly worked it into a layer around the edge of the hole that I had begun to form; it was a small hole, only big enough for a fish—or a changeling disguised as a fish. It was to be a mammoth task, I realised with much displeasure. Grumbling, I then morphed my paws into literal shovels and changed my tactics, scooping out huge quantities of mud before I coated the wall with the lust. It would take a few days to properly solidify, but it would at least keep the walls reasonably stable for now.
It took a good twenty minutes to dig a hole deep enough for my aims, and even longer to dig back up high enough to prevent the backflow of water through the tunnel. Gasping and frozen, I was quick to collapse in the water-free section of dirt, though with my head left in the liquid just to let my new gills get some air. When I finally felt somewhat alive, I then continued my endeavour.
I had to admit, though my old hive had been far from luxurious, I had to respect Chrysalis’ building abilities. As I changed back into my normal form, feeling more than a little light-headed from lack of oxygen, I was quick to poke a very small hole into the ceiling with my horn, which I elongated so that it would reach the surface. Feeling somewhat pleased with myself, I was then more than happy to carry on with clearing out a space to make my new hive.
Most important in any new hive was, of course, the nursery, a thought which left me perplexed as to what was most beneficial; though the hive would be almost certainly hidden from ponies, it could still be attacked by scouts from another hive. It was arguably one of the fastest, if most costly, ways to get more love; simply strip it from the walls of another hive. Hence, to build the nursery hive immediately with no form of defence... It could be very costly.
It was that thought alone which prompted an idea to spark in my mind. I wasn't ready to lay any eggs yet; though it was a conscious action to do so—something a queen would very rarely carry out herself, in fact, instead leaving the job of incubation to her drones—it could not be done without fertilisation. Of course. And, with every drone in the hive being related to one another, it was highly frowned upon to copulate inside the hive—but, naturally, there had to be a source of sperm to produce said offspring. And so the task fell to the queen, the mother of the hive, to find a strong specimen to father her offspring. The species didn't matter, so long as she herself was the same as her partner at the time of copulation; her eggs would remain unchanged. But changelings were compatible genetically to every other species, at least with a little assistance from magic, and so it was quite possible to build a superior hive in every manner.
Chrysalis had been quite the fan of strong stallions, that much was a well known fact. She appreciated her drones' ability to seamlessly blend in with ponykind, as opposed to other rulers who opted for different fathers for their hives—and each different species gave a very slight advantage. One queen, for example—before the untimely destruction of her hive from disease—had even gone so far as to mate with diamond dogs, a pairing that produced drones who, though not particularly flattering, were able to spoil their targets rotten with the finest gemstones. Whatever the case, it was an important decision to make; very few queens chose more than one species to mate with, else there would be a sense of elitism in the ranks which could be dangerous.
There was time yet to make that choice, though. I knew that all too well, though the thought was discouraging; I had worked so hard today, yet I was far from done in my task. Until at least the first eggs had hatched and grown—and maybe for a long time after—I would have to harvest the majority of food for my subjects. And I was exhausted on the first day.
I grumbled a little and began to get back to work, now well aware that what I needed most was a place to call my own. Each queen had their own cavity inside the main body of the hive, with plenty of drones at their beck and call. Though I did not have the assistance, it was what I needed right now, and so I quickly got to work. I dug a long and narrow tunnel forwards, well aware that I would need to expand these at some point to accomodate and protect the hive. But I was tired, and I needed to rest properly now, so I instead got about one hundred metres in, coating the walls in gum all the way, before I paused and dug a small tunnel off the side of the main one. With little enthusiasm, I then cleared a very small square in which to make a nest—mixing gum with mud, as opposed to just plastering it on the walls, was a simple bed-making technique that all young drones were told of—before I shook myself free of grime and clambered in. When mixed together, the gum and dirt made a somewhat soft and warm bed. It was a far cry from what could be done, but I had neither the resources nor the time to do so.
I just wanted to sleep.
A Certain Type Of Harvest
Back in Chrysalis' hive, I had been—as were the majority of my peers—a lower class, love-collecting drone. Not a guard, not a builder, not a spy or an infiltrator; a simple scavenger, if the job could be called as such, who lurked in the shadows and drained the love of ponies without even stepping hoof in the town. Not in plain sight, anyway. It was a fairly low level role but it had required a certain level of stealthiness, for sure—but it had not once required particularly extravagent disguises. I had never experimented with unicorn magic, earth pony strength or pegasus flight before; I had simply been there, in pony form but not playing the role.
To say that my current situation was bizarre was, as such, something of an understatement. Not only had I never before adopted this form before—my horn, it was weird—but I had never felt so insanely powerful. This new body came with an odd sort of magic, the likes of which I could not fully utilise but could be well aware of. The magic was so potent, in fact, that it made me feel oh so alive, oh so free—and, damnit, oh so horny. Which, ironically, I didn 't need to be this time.
Because my next victim-slash-mate was, I knew—from the textbook as opposed to experience—one of a kind. And incredibly animalistic, at that.
Discord, the master of chaos, was a draconequus. The race had all but died out, at least to my knowledge, but he was not so hard to locate. Changeling-dragon hybrids were a powerful sort, for sure, but I could hardly see a better match for my drones than a draconequus in all its glory. My children, each mismatched creation, would be legendary; I could picture it now.
I laughed a little as I walked forwards slowly, unaccustomed to walking on my hind legs only. I had done it before, to be sure—it was a compulsory part of every changeling's training, though for what reason I was not sure—but that didn't mean that I was any more competent at it. I had to make a good appearance, though, if Discord himself would buy into my disguise and mate me. I was highly doubtful that it would be so difficult, though, to tell the truth; after eons—presumably—without a mate, he would surely jump at the chance.
I took a deep breath as I approached the little cottage, lowering myself to all four feet. I took a quick glance in the stream which I approached before I continued; I'd given myself a long, flowing mane and tail—red, of course—and had sprouted a generous white plumage from my chest, bright against my beige fur. Two small but curvy horns sprouted from in between my ears, both similar to a goat's, and my legs were similar to that of a hypogriff's; two claws at the front, an eagle's and a dragon's, and standard pony hooves at the back, one of which was black in colour whilst the other was skewbald. I was not quite so mismatched as the rumours depicted Discord to be, but I was far from normal-looking. With only a few minutes to prepare—I didn't want to lose the chance, and I could not be sure when he would be returning—I had not put too much time into thinking of the perfect draconequus cover. And, at any rate, this was easy enough to remember if he did ever return; I certainly wouldn't miss the opportunity to lay more of his eggs, for sure.
I grinned a little and then flapped my wings slowly so as to lift myself up into the air. It was harder to fly as a pegasus than a changeling, the magic being unaccustomed to me—but with power all but flowing from my every pore, to stay airborne now was easy. Easier than walking with an overly long body, on fours or otherwise.
As I approached, I flew high up in the sky and let my mind wander. One thought, aside from the picture of the draconequus rutting me hard and ruthlessly with all his might, stuck in my mind; why had changelings not morphed into draconequii sooner? I could only presume that this body was more adept at storing and manipulating magic than any other form, which begged the question as to why no drone had ever tried to use the disguise.
But then again, why would they? Draconequii were hardly the most awe-inspiring of species, at least in terms of appearance, and the gangly and eye catching body could not exactly be described as “stealthy” either; the disguise was of no use to the infiltrators and love-collectors alike.
I shook my head and then flicked my cheek with my draconic claw; a small bead of blood formed where I had struck. I hissed and quickly brushed it away before I then fluttered down to the ground gazed upon my new territory; the boundary of the Everfree Forest. It seemed ironic that a pony who was known, at least in town, for being the most timid creature ever could live even remotely nearby to the undeniably dangerous place, but it made my life easier at the least.
I crept up to the edge of the forest slowly and began to whistle as I walked along the semi-overgrown track, my eyes alight and my pussy winking with each step.
