Fluttershy hummed to herself as she tended to her flower garden. She didn’t exactly have what one might call a green hoof but she was quite fond of her tiny Eden. Diligently weeded and carefully watered made for a proud display of love and labor. The gentle mare smiled at the sight of a one foot tall Discord approaching her. Fluttershy paused when she noticed that her miniature mate was wearing a bright yellow construction hat and holding a regular sized bucket of dirt. The Draconequus marched up to the edge of the garden and dumped the bucket right near the edge. Discord then turned and scampered off towards a large tree a short distance away and then behind it. She shrugged and returned to her work.
Fluttershy thought about what she might plant in the new plot of soil. Her thoughts were cut short by four small Discords dumping buckets of soil next to the edge. The Pegasus looked up and saw that a dozen more were on their way with buckets and hard hats. She sat and watched as her garden slowly grew and grew. She stepped to the new addition and inspected the material. The growing fleet of Draconequui must have been screening the dirt before adding to her ever expanding workspace. With a very strong sense of curiosity she walked towards the source of the growing hoard of tiny creatures.
The tree was a very old Pine that stood vigilant over what would otherwise be an empty field between her home and the forest beyond. Behind the ancient giant she saw a large team of small Discords handing dirt buckets to idle ones in exchange for empty ones. Behind the traders was a fairly large tunnel dug between two grand roots. She carefully moved past the workers and paused when her hooves failed to touch cold earth. She stepped onto a layer of grass, straw and leaves. Deeper down she went through a short tunnel into a large den under the tree. A small army of Draconequui were rapidly digging and laying out the gentle floor. Others were crafting stalagmites and stalactites as if to make it look more like an old cave. In the back of the den she saw a clutch of small Discords crafting hay bales and using them to build a wall to divide the den into two sections. They seemed unaware of her presence and she couldn’t find words for what she saw.
A full sized Discord came out of the crude room and Fluttershy paused. There was enough room to stand but Discord had to be on all fours. He smiled and hesitated as if he didn’t plan on being caught in some sort of mischief. She regarded him with an inquisitive look. For all she knew it was some kind of mischief. She stepped closer and Discord took a step back.
“I am more than happy to answer questions my dear” Discord nervously said with his trademark smile. “I’m sure you have them. I just need you to keep your distance for a few days.”
Fluttershy’s heart dropped at his words. Was this him moving out? Was he upset with her? Why did he want her to stay away? Normally when they were together he was practically welded to her. It sometimes took effort to do things on her own. He was getting better at giving her space but this was a very new degree of it. Before she could respond he continued.
“I’ve been able to keep my wits during a Solstice but with the stars lined up the way they are I can barely cast a spell. This labor crew is about all I can muster. Now I know it’s strange to hear the great Discord admitting to having limits but that’s how it is. I need to be as far from opportunities to cause Chaos as I can get; and this tree was as far as I got. In a few hours I will go into a very simple and I will remain a slave to the most basic of instincts for a few days. Now I am deeply moved by your obvious concerns and I’m sure it will be difficult having your darling Dizzy unavailable but it’s for the best. I’m sure you’ve thought about me going into full Beast Mode in the bedroom but I can assure you that as fun as it sounds; I don’t want to accidentally hurt you or even worse; be in a state of mind where I don’t care. She opened her mouth to speak but was cut off by being lifted by a team of small Discords. The troupe of chaotic creatures quickly ushered her out of the den and dropped her off just beyond the entrance. Flutttershy sat in place and watched the busy laborers. She was more curious than she was when she started and was in all honesty a little amused. It was understandable that Discord would be embarrassed or worried; but this sort of thing was her bread and butter. In her deepest thoughts she was excited to learn more about this side of him. Fluttershy uttered a small laugh. Spring had such effects on her. It was a very natural thing to go through. She slowly marched back into the tunnel leading under the tree and noticed that the removal of soil was no longer happening. She peeked into the den and saw Discord with a team of five of his work force going over what might have been the blueprints of Discord’s den. After a brief and hushed conversation the small doppelgangers were absorbed into his shadow.
“Discord” she softly said as she stepped closer. “I know you’re nervous but”
As sudden snap of his eyes cut her off.
“Back” he almost hissed as he stepped towards the inner den. “It’s almost started. I don’t have the concentration to seal off this place. I have food and water for a few days; more than enough actually. I’ll be fine. I just need you safe from me.”
Fluttershy stepped forward and Discord retreated another step. For a moment he uttered a soft growl.
“Dizzy; taking care of you when you’re in this state is part of what I already do. Plus you are my husband. I made a promise to always stay by you no matter what.”
Discord paused before stepping behind the crude walls. His vision gradually became sharper and his sense of smell grew just as strong. He gradually stopped seeing the gentle mare as his wife. She was slowly turning into an animal like him.
“Give into it Discord” Fluttershy softly said as she stepped forward. “You won’t hurt me.”
Discord strained to understand what she said. His mind was a haze and her words were just sounds without meaning. The last remnants of sapience were slipping away with the last of his ability to cast magic. Discord crouched low to the ground and blinked. As his eyes opened he took in an unfamiliar setting. The den he was in was quite cozy and smelled like him. He turned to the inner den and caught the scent of food. The animal moved into the walled nest and found a large stash of fruits. His eye caught a small pool of water encircled by a stone rim. It smelled fresh and seemed to be spring fed. Wherever he was, it had all he needed. With a stretch he laid out on the soft ground and kept an eye on the entrance. The scent of the other cave’s occupant was still present. It was clearly a mature female that spent a great deal of time with him but he couldn’t place exactly when it all took place. Discord snorted as he heard soft steps towards his claimed lair.
Fluttershy slowly stepped into the subterranean home of hay and cotton. She could see food and water clearly but her eyes were drawn to the great beast between her and the provisions. Normally any sensible pony would turn tail and run. Generally when facing a large feral animal the first thing that comes to mind is to flee while your legs were still attached. She smiled as she dared take another step. Fluttershy was not an ordinary pony. There was a touch of fear in her; but a sense of responsibility and devotion kept it silent. The mare stepped closer and was met with a low growl. All her experience flashed through her mind. Discord wanted what any animal wanted. He wanted a safe place to call shelter and to have access to food. There was no monster, certainly not like he predicted. There was clearly a hunger in his eyes but he didn’t seem interested in acting on it. Discord was clearly feeling at home and had no interest in leaving. Fluttershy paused as the reason behind the multitude of small Discords came into her mind. The excess numbers were to spread his scent.
Discord continued to look into the eyes of the stranger who smelled like him. She was confident in her stride but there was a great deal of respect and restraint. She wasn’t threating him or his supplies. The Draconequus continued to observe her as she observed him. He slowly rose to his feet, paw and claw, stepping closer to his query. She remained still and Discord uttered a soft growl as he took in her scent. It didn’t seem necessary to attack or drive her out. She smelled like she belonged in the cave. She smelled like him. She smelled like she belonged to him. Discord drew closer and nudged her gently with his snout towards the stores in the back.
Fluttershy froze as he drew closer. She almost squeaked as he softly pushed her deeper into the den. It wasn’t an act of aggression so she didn’t think she needed to worry. A few steps towards where she was being led and she found herself at his food. A smile came over her face as more relief came over her mind. There was no ferocious beast; only a gentle giant. Fluttershy slowly took an apple from the pile and ate it. Working in the garden did work up an appetite and Discord wanted her to partake. She wondered what other things he might do to surprise her. She wondered if he ever remembered his altered state of mind. A paw slowly stroked her tail and she giggled softly. A few days down here didn’t sound all that daunting.
Discord subtly moved her tail and sampled the air again. She definitely belonged to him and she definitely was an appropriate mate. He was surprised that she hadn’t born him any young. He waited for her to finish her apple before nuzzling her small body. It was time to do something about that. Clearly she had been around him for a long time. She had eaten with him and slept with him. It was quite confusing to him that they shared their lives and had no children.
Fluttershy whispered his name as she felt him gently nuzzle her. She offered a smile after she finished eating. She still didn’t see what Discord was so worried about. Granted he was indeed a wild animal in mind and body but his heart hadn’t changed. She returned the soft nuzzling and blushed when she caught him savoring her scent. He really wasn’t all that different. Discord was now just a lot less vocal about what he was thinking; but he wasn’t impossible to understand. The acts of sharing food and shelter while offering affection made it clear that he still understood that they were a mated pair.
“See Dizzy? This isn’t all that bad” she softly said into his ear before pulling away. “I’m going to check on my garden and figure out what to do with all the new space. I’ll be back down in a bit.”
Discord watched as she turned and went toward the exit. He moved ahead of her and waited for her to approach. He had nothing to worry about. She was his mate. She would come back home and he could easily track her if he had reason to be concerned. He could watch and do nothing but he could also prove his worth further. The pony approached and gave him another smile. He gave a soft growl in response and with a careful motion he wrapped his paw arm around her and guided her into walking to him instead of leaving. He could hear her heart beating faster. He could see that she was slightly startled by the act. Discord gently licked her face and got to work on making his plans clear.
