The two students were getting ready for another math lesson. Twilight Velvet hated it. She much preferred something creative, like art, music or English. The student sitting beside her was named Nightlight. She had seen him a few times before, but they hadn't really ever talked. Apparently he was somewhere in the top of his class for math and science -- maybe he could help her.
"Say, do you know the answer to this? I was just stuck on this question for homework." Velvet said.
Nightlight took a look at the paper and quickly scribbled something down.

"Okay. Today we are going to be learning about the properties of a triangle and how to calculate the area. Now, write this in your books." She said in her usual bored, monotone voice.
The hellish lesson seemed to drag on forever. Most of the teachers at Crystal Prep were like Mrs Uppercrust; Posh, snobby and rich. Boring and uninterested in the subjects they taught.
Twilight Velvet felt like she was going to die of boredom. Then she remembered something; her unfinished story in the back of her math book. She flipped the pages over and found it, titled 'The Lost Wizards of the Everfree Forest'. It was her take on a famous urban legend about a dark forest, named Everfree, where people apparently went in and never came out. She had always wondered where this forest was and what mysterious creatures could possibly be living in it. Velvet eagerly began to scribble away, new ideas popping into her head every second. She loved to let her imagination run away from her.

Velvet's train of thought was immediately halted to a stop. She slowly lifted her head to a menacing figure; Mrs Uppercrust, looming above her with a glare.
"Um...yes, Miss?"
"I would hope you are doing your work."
Velvet desperately attempted to cover her writing.
"You should have been writing your sums. What are you hiding?"
"Oh, um...nothing!"
Mrs Uppercrust tried to snatch the book out of Velvet's grasp. Velvet clutched the book to her chest in distress. Please don't take my precious story...
"If it's nothing, then you'll let me read whatever it is. Hand it over, now, or I read it out to the entire class."
Velvet sighed. It was no use. She quietly handed over her work book and Mrs Uppercrust walked back to her desk, her nose pointed high in the air. Mrs Uppercrust reached her desk and shot a glowering smile at Velvet. She picked up Velvet's book, flipped to the back pages and read out:
"It was a dark and stormy night in the Everfree Forest..." Mrs Uppercrust began.
Velvet felt her face go red. Her teacher had just lied to her and was reading her unfinished story out to her classmates.
Mrs Uppercrust kept her stare on Velvet the entire time she read, making sure to read slowly and carefully as to embarrass Velvet as much as possible. Velvet slowly slid underneath her wooden desk in humiliation. She could feel thirty pairs of eyes staring down at her as Mrs Uppercrust read her tale.
Time slowed down as her teacher read everything, page after page, to attempt to mortify her student; and it was working. Mrs Uppercrust finally finished and closed the book, a smug expression on her face.
Ring! Ring!
"You are dismissed. Leave now."
The students stood and strode out of the door. Velvet waited behind; she wanted her book back.
"That's what you get. Don't let me catch you writing fairytales in your math book again."
Mrs Uppercrust handed the book back to Velvet and she walked back to her desk and waited for her next class.
Velvet practically ran out of that room. This is why she hated this school, she hated this planet, because of people like Mrs Uppercrust.
Suddenly, she saw someone ahead of her stop walking and turn around. Spotting Velvet in the crowd, he walked briskly back over to her.
"That was a good story." Nightlight complimented. Velvet noticed his cheeks go slightly pink.
"Oh, um, thanks. It isn't finished yet."
"Maybe I could read it when you're finished?" he asked.
"Sure, why not?"
"I always like to wonder if the Everfree legend is true. I also like to write - like you - but my stories are terrible." Nightlight stuttered.
"Maybe I could give you a few pointers?" Velvet said.
"Okay, thanks! Meet...in the library today at lunch?"
"Oh, alright, I'll be there!"
The two walked to their next class, talking and giggling. Velvet felt better; she had just made a new friend as a bonus.

Velvet groaned. Her next class was sport. She stumbled into the girl's changerooms and changed into her sport clothes. She looked into the mirror and tied her hair up in a messy bun. Velvet found sport awkward. She had to change clothes in front of all the girls in her class and that was very uncomfortable for her. She liked her body, but she always felt like she was a little too short, a little too chubby, like her hair was slightly too messy. This high school pushed its students to be good at everything. The minority of the teachers who were kind had always told the students that they should be happy to be themselves and not have to worry about being perfect. Velvet tried to listen to them, but it was hard when she was constantly compared to other girls her age. Not only by herself, but other students too.
She attempted to ignore the little niggling thoughts that told her that she wasn't perfect enough and laced up her sneakers, ready to face the hell that was sport class. Velvet strode out of the change rooms onto the open, grassy field.
"Okay, class!" The loud voice of Coach Bulk Biceps echoed off the towering buildings of the high school. "Today we're gonna play SOCCER!"
Velvet let out another loud groan. She had a bad history with the game. When she was six, she had wanted to play soccer for ages. She was elated when her parents finally caved in. She arrived at her first lesson wearing embarrassing sporty gear and all of her team mates ended up laughing at her. Velvet broke out in tears. But she made the mistake of going back for another lesson. Her peers hurled insults at her and threw peanuts. She cried again, went home and never did soccer lessons again.
"Now, the first thing we gotta do is practice our dribbling! Find a partner, stand facing each other and PRACTICE THOSE DRIBBLING SKILLS!" the Coach explained.
Most of the students were already paired up as soon as Coach said 'partner'. Except Velvet. She despised team and partner sports because it was always rare that someone would choose to pair up with her. Usually the teacher had to put her with another left over.
She looked around and sighed. Nope. Today was another day where she would be put with someone by the teacher.
Then she felt a tap on the shoulder. She swivelled around and expected to see Coach Bulk Biceps towering over her and yelling in her face, but she saw Nightlight.
"Hey, uh...maybe we could partner up? Since we're friends?" The guy asked shyly.
"Okay, sure!"
Velvet felt a surge of joy wash over her body. Someone wanted to be her partner for once.
Velvet walked over to the Coach and picked up a soccer ball. "Do you have a partner, Twilight Velvet?" Bulk Biceps asked. Velvet swore that his voice made the whole oval vibrate.
"Yes, actually I do." Velvet answered politely before quickly striding back to Nightlight.
The two looked at each other awkwardly in silence as Velvet placed the ball carefully on the ground.
"So, uh...Do you like soccer?" Velvet asked uncomfortably to break the quietness.
"N - Not particularly. You?" Nightlight answered. Velvet could hear a slight quiver in his voice.
"I wouldn't say so..." Velvet said. She attempted to kick the ball over to Nightlight, who was standing a few metres away. It missed him by far. He jogged out over the grass to where the ball had stopped.
"Sorry! I'm really bad at this game!" Velvet said, her voice flustered and rushing. She had very low social skills and she had no idea how to start interesting conversations.
"No, no, it's quite alright." Nightlight said. Velvet noticed his British accent. This made her curious. She had always found British accents rather attractive.
"Are you British?" She questioned, studying Nightlight's face.
"No, well, yes, but -" He paused and shook his head. "I was born there and my dad was, too, but my mum is American."
He kicked the ball back to Velvet. It went very slowly, and only just reached her feet. "Sorry. I'm also very bad at football. Soccer. Whatever you call it over here."
Velvet giggled. "Yes, we call it soccer."
The friends continued to kick the ball back and forth between them until they heard the ear - splitting, high pitched noise of the whistle.
"TIME'S UP! Go get changed, you're dismissed!"
Lunch now... Velvet thought. She had already forgotten about the library with Nightlight. She figured he wouldn't come, after all, Velvet felt boring and lonely, and anyway, Nightlight was probably going to sit with his own friends at lunch.
Velvet changed her clothes and trodded out of the change rooms.

Twilight Velvet sat herself down, alone, at one of the dirty tables in the school's cafeteria. She sighed. She wanted someone to come and sit themselves down next to her.
Just as this thought entered her mind, a tall, light blue - haired girl came and sat down next to Velvet. Velvet turned her head and looked closer at this person. The girl was skinny and very pretty.

"Mystic Aura?"
"Yep, that's me. And you're Twilight Velvet." Mystic Aura said. The girl reached out to stroke Velvet's purple and white hair.
Velvet was amazed at Mystic Aura's confidence. She even felt her heart flutter a little. Velvet was bisexual, though she had never told anyone. Mystic Aura was known to be a wild and brave girl, even reckless.
