A Griffon's Sympathy

A sequel to A Fledgling's Struggle, but much less dark. This is readable without reading the first.
After Equestria's fall, Griffinstone rose in power immensely. Castles were built and the whole nation had expanded eastwards, colonizing the massive forests and rocky mountains. Tensions rose, however, and the peace didn't last, similar to the ponies of Equestria. Half of the nation wanted to remain conventional, but the other thought that adopting the ponies' ways would be better for everyone, and brutality would be better than finding a peaceful solution to a problem.
Soon enough, a small griffon named Grover was murdered, and it was no accident. His father, Peyton, a close friend and partner of the king of Griffinstone, immediately called for order, taking immediate action. The only witness of Grover's death grew up to serve for Griffinstone, showing no mercy for anyone who was part of the rising empire known as the Red Gear.
Later, however, there was a massive group of pegasus and earth pony refugees who had traveled long and far to get away from Equestria. Griffons are unsure of whether to trust them after the Red Gear's claims of adopting the ponies' ways, leading to an unrest as the ponies waited outside the border, respectfully patient. They seem near harmless, and most of them are starving.
A meeting is scheduled soon after, giving Peyton and one important griffon the chance to talk with the self-appointed leader of this group, as well as her young filly.
