‘Okay... Sigil, check. Area shielded in a level five quarantine field, check. Research notes, check.’ Twilight furrowed her brow, ‘Oooh, I know I’m forgetting something.’
“Spike!” Twilight shouted to the upper level of the treebrary.
A scampering sound followed by a small thud came from above. “What is it, Twilight?” Spike responded, peeking over the edge of the stairs.
“Will you bring me my checklist on the summoning ritual? It feels like I’m forgetting something important.” Twilight asked with a smile.
“Sure thing, Twilight.” Spike happily replied.
Twilight returned to the center of the library, walking around the hoof-drawn chalk sigil. ‘Six points to the star, check. The main point facing North, check. A line vertical in the center to represent both Air and Earth, check. Did I purify the area…?’ Twilight’s horn lit up as she scanned the area for trace amounts of residual or natural magics, 'check! I hope my alterations of Star Swirl’s Summoning Sigil work. I could be the first pony ever to study geological samples from beyond the moon!’ Twilight thought with a silent ‘squee’ as she trotted in place.
“Here you go, Twilight.” Spike said, as he sprinted down the stairs; tripping midway causing the scroll to unravel and bounce down the stairs stopping at Twilight’s hooves.
“Thank you, Spike. Could you also get me a Magic Square sigil template? I want to recheck a few things.” Twilight asked levitating the scroll up to her muzzle.
“Of course, one template coming up.” Spike smiled as he got up and returned upstairs.
“Thanks, Spike.” She mumbled looking over the checklist.
Two hours later.
‘Okay, here we go.’
Magenta coloured magic circles the chalk sigil on the floor arcing up to the ceiling. The smell of ozone and petrichor hung in the air as bolts of magenta lightning struck outward and upward all contained in a cylindrical magic shield. The wind picked up in the library causing candles to extinguish and stray pieces of parchment to blow about in a vortex around the cylindrical shield. The lightning begins to fold in on itself creating a sphere of magenta light. Sweat beads on Twilight's brow with the strain of concentration and overwhelming magic being poured into the sigil. The sphere begins to spin changing from light magenta to a brilliant bright white. Twilight begins to squint at the light as glass in the windows starts cracking, causing Twilight to glance over losing her focus… ‘Ah, ponyfeat-..!’
BOOM!
The buildup of pressure causes the windows to burst outward, ousting quills, parchment, and a small amount of dust with them. The front door slams open and smacks into the tree, swinging back with a creak; hanging by a single hinge. Ponies passing in the street chuckle to themselves as they head home for the day. Just another day in Ponyville.
Quills and parchment fall as the mixture of smoke and dust start to clear leaving a dumbstruck, slightly singed, Twilight.
“Twilight, what the hay!? Are you alright?” Spike shouted as he sprints down the stairs.
In the midst of a coughing fit, “I’m okay… Just lost my concentration.” She replied in a daze.
“You had me worried there for a second, Twi.” Spike muttered as he walked up to Twilight giving her a hug.
“I’m okay, Spike. I’m sorry for making you wor-...”
“Hmm, it would appear I’m not in Kansas anymore.”
The pair look at each other, locked in a hug, as their eyes go wide. Both turn to see a creature, in the warm glow of Twilight’s shield, twice as tall as a pony standing in the center of the sigil. The creature was wearing a white shirt and black baggy pants, covered in pockets. No coat but it’s skin was white with tan on the upper exposed portions. It had a short red mane that only covered the top of it’s head. Its shirt covered in black straps and objects hung beside its chest under its forearms. It also had what appeared to be a saddlebag on its back covering a large sword. The creature took a step forward on it’s hind legs that ended with thick coverings with strings braided up ending in a bow and started touching the shield with the end of its claw-like appendage.
“Fascinating, it’s like a Plasma Globe but it tingles.” The creature states as it strokes the magical shielding causing the magic to get brighter, strengthening itself.
“Umm, who-what are you?” Twilight asked causing the creature to jump and look around as if it just realised it wasn’t alone.
The creature looked down to Twilight, “I am a human, more specifically a defender class summon creature. My name, roughly translated, means ‘Honest Vengeance of the Wolf.’ To whom and what am I speaking?” The creature replied, bowing slightly.
“Umm, that’s a mouthful…” Twilight paused, looking up at the creature. “Wolf?” The creature nodded. “My name is Twilight Sparkle, a unicorn, and this here,” She said grabbing the baby dragon from her side to hold out in front of her, “is Spike. He’s a baby dragon.”
“Interesting, I've never heard of a unicorn summoning a human, did you summon me with this?” Wolf inquired staring at his feet.
“Yes, yes I did.” Twilight admitted, beaming with unsure pride as Spike moved back beside her.
“Something must have gone wrong, Master. This isn’t a defender sigil.” Wolf sighed.
“Well, yes, I got distracted and lost my concentration.” Twilight admitted with a sigh, staring at the floor. “Did… Did you call me master?” Twilight asked looking up.
“I did indeed, Master.” He replied with a smile.
“Wolf, why call me master?”
“You summoned me, yes?” Twilight nodded. “Once names are exchanged and the caster admits to the summoning, you are my master. As a summoned creature, I must follow your orders, defend you and everything you hold dear to the best of my abilities. We are linked and you are my Master.” Wolf stated.
Twilight stared blankly at the human, slack jawed, her eyes unfocused as she starts to hyperventilate. “H-how do I send you back!? This wasn’t suppose to happen! I-it’s a crime, in Equestria, to summon anything sentient!”
Twilight started to pace mumbling incoherently. “Master?” Wolf glanced over at the small dragon. “Baby dragon, Spike. Is she okay?” Wolf asked pointing at Twilight. “I believe I broke her.”
“Yeah, she’s alright, just overreacting,” the dragon chuckled, walking around the library lighting extinguished candles. “She’ll be back with us in a second, and just ‘Spike’ is fine.”
“Very well, Spike.” Wolf replied. “Has my master summoned anything befo-”
“What have I done!?” Twilight wailed. “Oh sweet, Celestia… The princess, s-she’s going… She’s going to drop me as her student… Or, or worse!” Twilight stops, her eyes going wide. “Magic Kindergarten... Or… Th-th-the dungeon.” Twilight stuttered, tears welling up.
Wolf's expression changed to worry as he pushed at the magical shielding. “Master, please calm down.” The magic cylinder started to bow while small arcs of magenta lightning struck Wolf’s forearm causing him to wince and retract it. “All is well. Accidents happen, surely your princess knows this. There are ways to unsummon me, do not fret. We can still fix this.”
Tears streaming down her face, she looks up to Wolf. “W-what do I do?”
“I’m unsure of the spell to unsummon me, I myself have never been summoned.” Twilight’s head drooped and stared dejectedly at the floor, “but there are other ways. One way I do know, while not ideal, always works.”
“Please, tell me?” Twilight asked, desperation in her voice.
“Kill me,” Wolf sighed. “Upon my death, my existence will blink out of this world.” Wolf’s head fell, “just make it quick, as I'll still feel it.”
Taken aback, horror written across Twilight’s face. “I would never! I could never, all life is sacred! Ho-”
“Master," Wolf interrupted, "it's the only way I know that is guaranteed to work! I will not die as you believe, I would merely be sent back. I would do it myself but, I cannot, I would truly die.”
“No!" Twilight stomped her hoof down. "Even so, I could never do that to somepony. I’ll write the princess. She has to know a way, a way that won’t harm you. Even if she doesn’t there has to be information on summoning humans, or something similar, somewhere! I will not have anypony be killed because of me, even if you wouldn't really die!” Twilight shouted as she glared at the human.
“Always do what you think is best, Master.” Wolf stated, smiling gently.
“Spike, take a letter please.” Twilight asked looking over to the baby dragon, who was walking over from the desk, parchment and quill in claw.
“Way ahead of you, Twilight,” he replied smugly, “ready when you are.”
Twilight cleared her throat as she started walking around the cylindrical shield. “Dear, Princess Celestia. In my attempt to summon samples of extra-equestrian materials for study. I have, albeit accidentally, summoned an alien life-form. This ‘Human’ shows intelligence and can communicate, speaking in Equestrian. Its sentience is without doubt. It described itself as a ‘Defender class summon creature’ and is armed. I preemptively encased the area in a level five quarantine and observation shield, in case of contamination for the samples, and its unwilling or unable to escape. Its name is,” Twilight stopped walking around the shield and looked up at the human expectantly.
“Honest Vengeance of the Wolf. Also, I’m a male, not an ‘it’, Master.” Wolf sighed glancing at Twilight.
“Honest Vengeance of the Wolf, or just ‘Wolf’ for short. It is also male and for some reason he has been referring to me as ‘Master’. This was a complete accident due to me losing concentration and I have no idea how to send him back. That is aside from what he told me, but that’s something I could never do. In his own words ‘Kill me, upon my death my existence will blink from this world’. I’m out of my depth, Princess. I didn’t plan for this eventuality and I need your guidance. Sincerely, your faithful student, Twilight.” She finished with a sigh. “Go ahead and send it, Spike.”
“Okay,” He replied as he rolled up the parchment, tying it up with a red ribbon. With a sharp exhale and a jet of green fire the message disappeared. “On its way. So what do we do while we wait?” He asked walking over beside Twilight as she stared at the human.
Twilight looked out the window then turned to Spike. “It’s not that dark yet. Princess Luna hasn’t even raised the moon. I’m going to head out to find the girls,” Spike looked up to twilight, a small amount of fear showing. “I won’t be gone long, I just need to find Rainbow or Pinkie then they can get the others. It’ll be okay, spike,” Twilight reassured him, pulling him into a hug. “My shield should hold for quite awhile.”
“Alright, I believe you, Twilight. Just… Hurry back, I don’t want to be alone with him for too long.” Spike gulped taking a glance at the human who only smiled gently in reply. “I’ll straighten up in here a bit in the meantime then put some tea on.”
“Okay, Spike, I’ll be right back.” Twilight said releasing the hug and heading to the door. Before heading out she turned and faced the human with a light glare. “You behave.”
“Ye-yes, Master.” Wolf replied, standing rigid.
Pushing on the broken door, she walked out, slamming the door while repairing it with her magic.
The dragon and human shared a moment of silence while they stared at each other. The human broke the silence, “Master can be quite scary, I believe.” The dragon nodded in agreement as he began picking up loose parchment, avoiding the broken glass around the windows.
Wolf, finally having a moment, took in the room. A modest sized study room with a staircase leading above. Bookshelves, embedded along the walls, crammed full of books. A table with a horse head atop pushed to the side that held scrolls, open grimoires, and a fair amount of chalk. A large sun carved into the ceiling that emitted a faint glow that seemed to get brighter as the darkness grew outside. Aside from the clacking of Spikes claws on the floor it was almost perfectly quiet, only the calming sound of leaves blowing in the breeze and the occasional creak of a larger limb moving. Sconces adorned the walls while oil lamps and a few candles sat atop almost any flat surface, making the shadows dance. Taking a moment to really smell the air it reminded him of a used bookstore with a hint of burning wood. Only one word came to mind ‘cozy’.
Spike, the small dragon, finally decided to leave the room having completed his task of ‘straightening up’. Apparently off to put a kettle on in one of the other rooms on the ground floor. Lacking much to do in his small shielded circumference, Wolf decides to check his equipment.
Removing his backpack and Irish claymore, setting them aside; he sat down Indian style. Grabbing his pack he began taking inventory. ‘Backpack, Sword, Browning Hi Power with three mags fully loaded. Opening the upper front pocket, Wolf sighed, thirty 12 gauge slugs, “I wish my shotgun came with me.” Closing the pocket he continued to the lower one. ‘About two hundred 9mm rounds, fifty of those Anti-Magic Rounds,’ “At least there’s some good news.” Closing the pocket he opened the main. ‘About two days worth of water, a medium bag of deer jerky, four cans of baked beans, a full flask of moonshine, a medium sized medical kit, a half full bottle of multivitamins, one Swiss army knife, three t-shirts; one white and two black, two sets of black cargo pants, one mp3 player half charged and a set of earbuds, a battery powered stereo speaker, one handheld gps, one solar charger, one baggie of assorted wires - AA batteries - and recharge cables, one roll of duct tape, one small arms cleaning kit, four packs of cigarettes, one Zippo lighter, one half full container of lighter fluid with spare Zippo flint attached, one flint stick, and a flare gun with three shots.’ “Well, I’ve been worse off.” Wolf groaned.
“What are you doing?” Spike asked looking at Wolf in curiosity.
“Checking my supplies. It seems I have the essentials but some of my better gear didn't come with me.” Wolf replied not looking up.
“Oh… What are you missing?” Spike asked walking up to the shield.
“My main projectile weapon. Not having it will make protecting Master more difficult.” Wolf replied, turning to the dragon.
“You know, it’s a little creepy you keep calling Twilight, master. I mean, she’s good a magic, and studying, and over thinking, but I don’t think she’s exactly a master.”
“I mean it in a different sense, I call her Master because it shows respect. Not just anyone can summon a guardian creature, especially a human. In the olden times humans couldn’t be summoned at all. Then the war happened, followed by ‘The Accord.’”
“What, a war? And what’s ‘The Acco-”
Spike was interrupted by the door opening, followed by Twilight and yellow pegasus with a pink mane covering most of her face, almost reaching the floor. Twilight walked up to spike, the yellow pegasus close behind; using Twilight for cover. “Spike, has he done anything odd, or try to escape?” Twilight asked looking from Spike to the human.
“Nope, he’s just been sitting there.”
“Any word from the princess?” She asked looking back to Spike.
“Not yet. Did you find anypony else?”
“Yes, I ran into Rainbow Dash, she said she’d get everypony. Luckily Fluttershy was with her at the time so I asked her to come with me in-case things were out of hoof when we got here.”
“Master? Is that your friend Miss Fluttershy?” Wolf asked pointing to the yellow mare sheltering behind Twilight.
Fluttershy “eeped” at her name and cowered more-so behind Twilight.
“Yes, Wolf, she is. Come now, Fluttershy. He can’t harm you, not behind that shield. This is Wolf.”
“O-o-okay,” Fluttershy replied shakily as she peaked over Twilight's behind. “I-I’m F-fluttershy.” She almost whispered.
Wolf smiled, “It’s a pleasure, Miss Fluttershy. You need not fear me, any friend of Master’s is a friend of mine.” He replied nodding at Twilight.
“O-okay,” she replied sheepishly. “T-twilight, why is he calling you, Master?”
“Because of an accident. Let’s just wait till the rest of the girls get here so I don’t have to repeat the story as much.” Twilight answered smiling at the yellow mare. “With Rainbow gathering everypony it shouldn’t take long.”
With a burp and a flash of green fire Spike snatched the scroll from the air. “Letter from the princess, Twilight.”
“Finally,” Twilight said excitedly grabbing the scroll in her magic. “Let’s see what the princess has to say about this.” Unrolling the letter she began to read.
“My faithful student, Twilight.” She spoke aloud,” Your letter was disquieting, to say the least. I have no knowledge of these humans and am quite curious about him. At the moment no charges will be pressed against you,” Twilight gulped. “I know as well as anypony accidents do happen. I've asked my sister, your friend, princess Luna to suspend her night court and head to Ponyville to assist you. She should arrive as soon as she is able. I ask that you gather your friends, the elements of harmony. Re-enforce your shielding and hold off questioning this 'Wolf' until she arrives. P.S. be calm my student, all will be well. -Sincerely, Princess Celestia." Twilight finished with a sigh.
"It'll be alright, Twilight." Fluttershy consoled, as she pulled her into a hug.
"Yeah," Spike agreed. "Besides, Princess Luna will know what to do."
At that moment the door shot open and a cyan blur followed by a rainbow landed in the room. "Where is it!?" The cyan pony growled looking around the room. Her eyes locked on Wolf for a moment before darting across the room bouncing off the shield, like a fly off glass, knocking her on her flank. "Oow." She exclaimed looking up to Wolf, rubbing her head, seething. Wolf shrugged.
"Rainbow, I just fixed that door... And please don't antagonise him. At least not until princess Luna gets here." Twilight sighed.
"Goodness, are you alright, Rainbow Dash?" Fluttershy asked completely forgetting about Wolf as she walked up to the shield and her fallen friend.
"Yeah, I'm alright. Sorry, Twilight." Rainbow said, looking to Fluttershy. "You better not try anything funny," shooting a glare to Wolf. Wolf only shrugged in response.
"Rainbow, where are the others?" Twilight inquired.
"They were right behind me, they should be here soon. I ran into Applejack while she was closing her stand so it didn't take me very long to tell everypony." Rainbow explained getting back on her hooves and walking over to Twilight, Fluttershy following close behind. "I don't see what all the fuss is about, it doesn't look that tough."
Wolf grinned, "I like this one, Master."
Rainbow jumped, turning in place. "It can talk!?" She almost shouted, causing Fluttershy to hide behind her long pink mane.
"Indeed." Wolf replied with a nod.
"Rainbow, this is Wolf. Wolf, This is my friend, Rainbow Dash-"
"Fastest flyer in Equestria." Rainbow interrupted, puffing out her chest, cutting Twilight off.
"A pleasure, Miss Dash." Wolf said with a slight bow. "Would you and Miss Fluttershy be Pegasi by chance?"
"Yes, they are. How did you know that?" Twilight asked looking up to Wolf distrustfully.
"Mythology, from old Terra, the planet I'm from." Wolf replied. "There were old stories, from three and a half millennia ago. No actual evidence was ever found to back them up though."
"Interesting, do you know these stories?" Twilight asked using her magic to float over a quill and parchment.
"Unfortunately, only bits and pieces, Master." Wolf replied, looking over to the door. "I believe your other friends are here."
Twilight sighed as she floated the writing material to a desk as she looked to the door. Leading the group was a pink pony with a fluffy pink mane bouncing as she hopped through the door. She was followed by a white unicorn with a well maintained purple mane, a look of disgust on her face as she spotted Wolf. Lastly there was an orange pony with a blonde mane done up in a ponytail topped off in a brown stetson.
“Hiya, Twilight,” the pink pony greeted. “Dashie said you had a friend over and- OHMYGOSH!” In an instant she was pressed against the shield causing Wolf to take a step back. The pink pony pressed further against the shield, standing on her back legs with her forearms above her head, squishing her forehead to the point where her eyes almost touched it. She inhaled a large amount of air before,
“HiI’m,PinkiePie.Doyoulikeparties?Whatisyourname?Doyoulikecake?Whataboutcupcakes?Thoughthosearebasicallythesamethingbutcupsized.Ooh,whataboutpies?Andconfettiandballoonsandpunch?Willyoubemyfiend?” She stopped, looking at Wolf hopefully.
“Umm,” Wolf looked over to Twilight, who shrugged. “Yes?” He replied, unsure of the question.
Pinkie squealed in delight, “So what’s your name?” She asked.
“Wolf. And you are?”
“I~I’m Pinkie Pie, Mr. Wolfie.” She exclaimed causing Wolf to sigh and roll his eyes.
“Pinkie, quit that. You don’t even know what that critter is.” The orange pony said as she walked over to Twilight, the white one following behind.
“Okie-dokie-loki!” Pinkie replied as she hopped down from the shield and made her way to the group.
“Twilight, dear. What is that dreadful thing?” The white one asked finally deciding to speak.
“That thing,” Twilight repeated. “Is Wolf, he’s a human, with sentience. I got distracted and accidentally summoned him.” She sighed looking to the floor. “Princess Luna is on her way to see him and hopefully send him back home.”
“Is he dangerous?” The white unicorn asked.
“I'm not sure,” Twilight replied as she walked up to the shield charging her horn. With a small flash, another layer of shielding formed and surrounded the previous one.
“I am, Master.” Wolf said causing everyone but Rainbow to gasp while Fluttershy made herself scarce behind the staircase. “But only to those who seek to harm you.” He quickly amended.
“See, he’s fine!” Pinkie exclaimed. “Now, for the rest of the introductions!” Pinkie said as she bounced over to the white unicorn. “This is Rarity.” Pinkie grabbed one of Rarity’s forearms and waved it floppily at Wolf, causing her to glare at Pinkie. Dropping the leg she hopped over to the orange pony, “and this is Applejack.”
“Howdy, there.” Applejack said with a tip of her stetson.
“A pleasure, Miss Rarity, Miss Applejack.” Wolf said with a slight bow to each.
“My, my! You certainly seem to be well mannered. Why, may I ask, are you wearing such hideous attire?” Rarity asked taking a few steps up to the shield.
“I try, especially when the situation calls for it. And to answer your question, practicality.” Wolf replied with a smile.
“Well, now that introductions are out of the way. Would you girls like some tea while we wait for princess Luna to arrive?” Twilight asked looking to the small group.
A gentle “yes,” came from behind the stairs while the others nodded.
“Spike, if you would please? I’d like to keep a close eye on the shield, just in case.” Twilight asked looking over to the small dragon.
“Sure thing, Twilight. Be back in a second everypony.” He replied heading for the backside of the staircase.
Some time later
A knock on the door interrupted the glances, awkward silence, and general unease that came during the wait.
“I-I’ll get it,” Spike said setting his tea on the floor, hopping up from Rarity's side. “Hold on, coming!” Springing to the door and opening it slightly.
“Good evening, Spike. We believe thou knowest why we’re here.” The voice at the door said.
“Yes, princess, please come in. The human’s just inside.” Spike replied opening the door, letting the ponies in.
Wolf stared in awe at the midnight blue pony that was taller than the rest. Her mane seemed alive as it flowed in a non existent breeze full of lights as if he were staring at the night sky. She was followed by another white unicorn in gold trimmed armour with a blue mane, obviously a male, and two others both in blue armour with greyish-blue coats and dark blue manes. Wolf’s eyes lingered on the twins wings which seemed to be a single dark blue membrane, almost bat-like.
“BBBFF!” Twilight shouted. Moving past the tall blue pony, who smiled, and up to the white giving him a hug.
“Hey, Twily. It’s good to see you.” He replied, returning the hug as he stared at Wolf.
“This is the human?”
“Yes, princess.” Twilight replied, leaving the hug and walking up to the shield to stand beside her.
“Good evening, Princess Luna.” Wolf said, placing a fist over his heart while making a slight bow. “Hopefully we can have this situation resolved quickly.”
Luna nods and turns to Twilight. “Has it made any attempts to flee or any threats whatsoever?”
“No, Princess. But he did admit to being dangerous.”
Hearing that, the white pony with the blue mane started moving closer to the shield. His horn lit up and yet another layer of shielding appeared. “Just in case.” He stated simply, sitting down to stare into wolf’s eyes.
“Ser Wolf, would thou explain thyself and thy situation?” Luna asked, taking a seat.
“Yeah, we want answers!” Rainbow shouted flying up and taking a seat next to the shield. She was followed by the other ponies, including Fluttershy who decided to stay close to Luna. Luna, upon seeing her quake in fear, draped a comforting wing around her.
All the ponies, aside from the white unicorn with the blue mane and the twins, gathered in a semicircle in front of Wolf. “I suppose, since you already know what and who I am, I’ll start at the beginning. Not the beginning of my life, but the beginning of the downfall of my kind and how I’m even able to be here.” Twilight frowned as she magically floated a quill and some parchment to her side.
“Five hundred years ago, we knew only humans. There was no magic or other sentient species, we lived fairly normal lives. There was evil and there was good, but most just wanted peace and quiet. Then one day, out of the blue, they came. Creatures from another world. Unknown at the time, for they never spoke to us, we know them now as Magi. They came in star-ships, and conquered my world. We tried to talk peace but in the end we had no choice but to fight. Our first and only visitors from the stars sought to kill and enslave us.” Wolf sighed as he took a seat on the floor. “We fought and held our own for a time, but we were no match for their magic. Not advanced and unknown technology, true and actual magic. We had and still have no defense against it, what little we do have, to fight with against magic. is tightly controlled,” Wolf groaned. “Nearing the end of the war, with heavy losses on our side and very few on theirs, we reluctantly decided to use our ultimate weapons. Our atomic weaponry, which uses nuclear fission to produce a weapon of mass destruction, the weapon uses the power released by the splitting of atomic nuclei.” Twilight gasped while Luna stared wide-eyed at the human.
“Is your entire species crazy!? Wolf, that amount of power would be devastating, not only to them but to your kind as well, even the very planet would be at risk!” Twilight stated, gobsmacked.
“What's an atomic whatsit? That doesn’t sound that bad,” Rainbow exclaimed rolling her eyes.
“Rainbow, that would make a crater the size of Ponyville and possibly most of the surrounding area. Why, Wolf?” Twilight said.
“The only choices we had was that or live as slaves, Master.”
Twilight’s head drooped as she let out a sigh. “Please continue, Wolf.”
“The Magi knew of our plans and stopped us, halting our bombs from hitting their occupied cities and sending them to more human populated areas. All so we could be easier to control. In the end we did their work for them by killing off over seventy five percent of the population.” The girls and the white unicorn gasped while the princess and the twins remained stoic.
“That’s terrible,” Fluttershy cried, tears welling up as she stared unblinking at Wolf. The rest of the girls, as well as the princess, nodded.
“Unfortunately, it gets worse. The Magi eventually rounded up the survivors and the holdouts and forced us to sign ‘The Accord’.”
“You mentioned that earlier, what is ‘The Accord’, Wolf?” Spike interrupted.
“‘The Accord’ was the agreement we signed to save what was left of my kind. It basically made every human a possible slave to the Magi. Stated in ‘The Accord’, whenever a human reaches maturity they are taken to a Magi Processing Center, or M.P.C for short. At the M.P.C they would find out how adept a human would be at a certain task, then magically bind the human that would be best suited for a certain job, allowing them to be summoned for a specific reason. You could be chosen to be a servant, a butler, a chauffeur,” Wolf lets out a small chuckle, “even a greeter at a restaurant. I, as most of you know, am a defender class summon creature. I’m a bodyguard, and I’m very, very good at it. Few would have the raw magic to be able to summon me, I was top of my class when I left the M.P.C, I honestly thought I never would be summoned.” Wolf paused, sending a grin and a nod to Twilight.
“Wolf, that sounds awful. How bad it must have been for your kind to agree to terms like that.” Twilight said meekly, a small amount of tears rolling down her muzzle as she stared at the floor.
“Indeed, for if my ponies were put in such a position...” The princess sighed.
“I’m sorry, Wolf.” Spike said sullenly.
Wolf looked around at the gathered ponies, most stared at the floor expressionless or dejected, yet whenever he met a pony’s gaze they looked away. They couldn’t bear to look him in the eyes. All but the princess, she remained stoic, but Wolf could see the maelstrom of fury behind those eyes.
“‘The Accord wasn’t all bad news,” Wolf started, standing back up. “Our lifespans increased from about eighty years to two hundred and we basically stop aging while summoned. We also became highly resistant to toxins, poisons, viruses, and disease. Lastly, we ourselves became able to do magic,” there was a collective gasp but Wolf continued, “Now, using magic is slightly inconvenient to us. It’s all based on how much raw magic our summoner possesses. To use our magic we have to use our master’s magic, we essentially share it.” Twilight stared wide eyed at Wolf.
“Y-you can use my magic?” She asked in a shaky tone.
“Yes, Master. However, not exactly in the way you can and we cannot just start using any magic we want. It is required to get verbal permission from our master, creating a link, before we can.” Twilight relaxed a little. “In doing this we know exactly how much magic potential they have, tapped or untapped. As a result we often know how adept our master is with magic before they realise it themselves.”
“You said earlier that we were linked, so you can already use my magic? I never gave you permission to do that.” Twilight asked cocking her head in confusion.
“Yes and no, Master. We’re linked by the summoning, nothing more, I cannot use your magic at this time. If the summoning link we share were to be severed before I’m unsummoned I would be what is called a ‘Stray Summon’.”
“What’s a ‘Stray Summon’?” Spike asked.
“A ‘Stray Summon’ is a summon creature, like myself, without a master. We can lose our master by death, frailty, great distance, or they may just be unsatisfied; break the link, and abandon us. But for a summon creature, losing our master, has serious repercussions. Mainly, the one we all fear, we lose our link to our home-world and are forced to remain on whatever planet we find ourselves. We would also resume ageing again and when we die, we die. We could link again with another mage but there is no known way to repair the initial summoning link. This is why the first and last thing we learn at the M.P.C is ‘Protect Your Master.’” Wolf replied, ignoring the look of horror on Twilight’s face.
“I-is there anything else you believe we should know, darling?” Rarity asked looking up to the human.
“Nothing comes to mind…” Wolf shrugged.
“What about your family?” Fluttershy asked with a smile sitting next to Luna.
“My family… Hmm, the clan ‘Of the Wolf’.” He smiled sadly, “ there are only three, aside from myself, remaining on our branch of the tree. My sister, her name is Sarai which means ‘quarrelsome’ to my people. It suits her well, she and I always seem argue. Yet we always make up in the end, no matter the argument. She has a strong will and a just heart.” Wolf stopped for a moment staring at the glowing sun on the ceiling. Taking a breath he looked down at the ponies with a soft smile, seeing them smile in return. “My mother, Joyce which means ‘cheerful’, is just that, I think I’ve only seen her upset or angry a handful of times. She would read stories to me, at night before bed, stories of knights and those who stand up for what’s right, noble, and just. Helping the ones who could not help themselves. I believe those same stories are what made me a defender.” Wolf tried to suppress a laugh. “And last is my father, Dawid or ‘beloved’, he is a quiet man, similar to myself. Listening to others and giving advice, knowledgeable and kind yet strong as a bear. There would only be one time he would ever get angry, when you threatened the ones he loved.” Wolf finished sitting back on the floor.
“Your family sounds nice.” Fluttershy stated
“Thank you, Fluttershy. I already miss them,” Wolf replied as he turned to his pack, opening it.
“What art thou doing?” Luna asked, suspicious.
“I was going to get a drink of water, I’m not used to speaking this much.” He started, moving his hands from the bag to his sides. “My apologies, princess.”
“Tis fine, you may drink.” Luna replied with a nod.
“Thank you.” Wolf said as he reached into his bag, causing the twins to stiffen, pulling out a bottle of water and unscrewing the cap to take a drink.
"Darling, why is your name so different from the rest of your family?" Rarity asked.
"There is a lot of power in a name, If anyone with magic were to say my true name and order me to do something I could not disobey, no matter what the order was. Among us humans, we have an agreement, we keep our names secret from almost everyone. So when we're eventually summoned we use a rough translation of what our names actually mean." Wolf explained looking over the gathered ponies. “Who are they?” He asked pointing at the white unicorn with the blue mane and the twins.
“I am Captain of her majesty Celestia’s Royal Guard, Shining Armour. Those two would be members of Princess Luna’s Night Guard. They would prefer to remain nameless.” The white pony replied.
“Ah, Black op’s I’m assuming, secrecy and all that, I understand. A pleasure to meet you, regardless.” Wolf said with a nod turning to Twilight. “So what happens now, Master?”
“That’s a good question,” Twilight turned to Princess Luna, “what do we do now?”
Luna stared at wolf for a moment then turned to face Twilight. “We are unsure. There is no doubt in our mind that this creature, Wolf, is dangerous. For now, we believe that more observation is required. We beseech that you and Wolf to accompany us to Canterlot for a few days of observation. We are interested in seeing what this Wolf is capable of. Would this be a problem?” She finished with a look to Shining.
“Of course not, princess.” Twilight replied with a smile.
“If she’s going, we’re coming too!” Rainbow said as she flew up, hovering behind Twilight.
“T’would not be a problem.” She replied as she turned to Wolf. “Please stand and do not move.” She commanded politely.
Wolf glanced over at Twilight, who nodded, then slowly got to his feet. Luna’s horn glowed and Wolf was surrounded with a midnight blur aura, then it disappeared. “Wolf is in perfect health, by our standards. You may drop your shields, we are safe from contaminants.” Luna finished, smiling at Twilight.
“A-are you sure, princess? He could still very well be-” Shining was cut off.
“We’re quite sure, Captain.” She replied with a scowl, turning to Shining.
“Ye-yes, your majesty!” He hastily replied, dropping his shield.
Twilight started to giggle as she looked away from her brother. “It would be unwise to try anything foalish, Wolf.” She said looking up to the human.
“Yes, Master. I have no intention of harming anything that doesn’t wish harm upon you.” He replied with a smile, leaning over to grab his bag.
“We would ask, you leave the sword. One of our guard will carry it.” Princess Luna asked as she rose, stepping back as Wolf slipped his arms through his backpack.
“Yes, your highness.” Wolf replied with a small bow as the remaining shields disappeared. “Your highness, I have another weapon.”
“Where?” The princess calmly asked.
“In the holster, pouch, under my left arm.” Wolf replied raising his left arm in the air.
Princess Luna looked curiously at the human, then smiled. “You may keep it, for the time being.”
“Princess? Are you sure about that?” One of the twins asked, shock on the faces of all present aside from the princess.
“Quite.” She replied curtly as she walked to the door. “We best be returning to Canterlot, the night may be young but ‘twill not last.”
“Master?” Wolf asked shock still painted on his face.
“If the princess says it’s okay, then it’s okay. Just don’t mess with it until I say, alright?” Twilight said motioning for Wolf to follow.
“Yes, Master.” He replied as he walked behind her. Wolf followed Twilight and Spike up to the door of the Golden Oaks Library and paused as he ducked under, heading outside.
“I’m not so sure about this.” Rainbow said walking to the door, keeping a watchful eye on Wolf.
“We just have to trust the princess’ judgement.” Rarity answered sounding a little unsure.
“It’ll be fine, Wolfie already said he doesn’t want to hurt anypony.” Pinkie replied, “I like him.”
“Pinkie, you like everypony.” Rainbow retorted.
“Not eeeverypony, but most everypony.”
They were interrupted by a loud clatter and turned, noticing the two nightguard attempting to grab Wolf’s sword. They struggled trying to grip it with their hooves. With a groan one of the nightguard bit the grip as they started walking to the door, dragging the edge across the floor leaving a small gash in the hardwood.
“Well, that was rather odd,” Rarity said looking over to Applejack. “Dear, you’ve been strangely quiet.”
“Y'see, that critter,” Applejack sighed, “Wolf, he weren't lyin’. That whole story was true. I’m guessin’ it just got to me is all.”
“I still think he’s hiding something.” Rainbow barked. “I’ve just have a bad feeling about him.”
“You always got a bad feelin’ ‘bout strangers, Rainbow.” Applejack argued.
“I think he’s safe,” Fluttershy broke in, “as long as nothing tries to hurt Twilight.”
“And how can you be so sure?” Rainbow asked.
“I saw it in his eyes.” Fluttershy answered simply as she headed to the door.
“We better get, don’t want to keep the princess waitin’.” Applejack said following behind Fluttershy.
The girls nodded, Rainbow sighed, as they left the library.
Outside
Wolf was staring at the houses of Ponyville, in the middle of the line chariots. “How big is this village, Master?”
“Not that large, Ponyville is a small town. The majority of the outskirts is forested or farmland. The town itself grew around them for their lumber and produce.”
“Interesting, that seems to be reflected of most small towns on my world. Outside the Mega-cities anyway.” Wolf leaned against the chariot facing the library.
“Mega-cities?” Twilight looked up to Wolf.
“Mega-cities are where most of the population live on my world.” He replied, looking down to Twilight. “You might find some small settlements or towns outside them but it’s mostly a lawless wasteland full of ruins.” Wolf sighed, “My family lives just outside Mega-city One. It’s the main hub as far as knowledge and technology is concerned. It also holds the primary M.P.C, the best teachers and trainers are there.”
“And you were top of your class?”
“Indeed, Master. As I said, I’m very good at what I do.”
“Cool,” Spike said simply.
Wolf’s attention went to the door. “Hey, do not drag that! That sword is priceless in more ways than one!” Wolf stood back up straight and took a step forward.
“We’re just doing our job.” The one not dragging the sword replied, dropping to a defensive stance.
Wolf held his hands up and took a step back causing the guard to relax. “Master, please do something, they’re damaging my sword.” Wolf winced as he watched the sword nick a rock in the dirt.
“Is it really necessary to drag it?” Twilight questioned, causing the guards to stop.
“Yes, ma’am, we’ve tried to grab it but we couldn’t get a grip on it.”
“Do you mind if I use my magic to carry it to the princess' chariot?” Twilight asked.
“Not at all, ma’am.” The guard with the sword replied letting the sword fall to the ground making Wolf visibly flinch.
Twilight focused on the sword attempting to levitate it, “that's weird,” she focused again trying harder.
Wolf leaned down to Twilight and whispered into her ear, “It absorbs magic at an astounding rate or deflects it, Master. Only three ever exists on Terra at any given time. One for the best warrior class, one for defender, and one for berserker class.” Wolf stood back up straight and stared at the sword on the ground. “It’s priceless.”
“One second, please.” Twilight said as she made her way to the front of the line of chariots. “Princess, it appears that Wolf’s sword is an extremely rare magical artifact from his world that absorbs magic. The guard are having trouble moving it and may damage it if they continue-”
“Say no more,” Luna interrupted, “we will take care of it.”
Luna, followed by Twilight, returned to the front of the library. She walked up to the sword and placed her hoof on it, the sword lifted a few inches off the ground then fell back down. “Curious,” Luna looked over to Wolf. “This is a very interesting weapon,” Luna focused her magic on the sword and levitated it beside her. “It will be well taken care of.” Luna turned and walked back to the forward chariot. Leaving a dumbfounded Wolf with his jaw slack.
Wolf glanced over to Twilight, she was smiling, “Master, that… There's no way.”
Twilight giggled, “That’s the princesses for you, they’re the most powerful magic users on Equus. Princess Celestia raises the sun and princess Luna the stars and moon.”
“That’s impossible, this is impossible.” Wolf pointed to Luna. “The amount of magic to pick up my sword alone... If magic were liquid, the amount would be an ocean… Not to mention they move celestial bodies.” Wolf shook his head trying to focus. “Remind me to never get on their bad side.”
Twilight chuckled.
Meanwhile, princess Luna dropped the sword on her chariot. Beads of sweat dripped off her brow as she tried to catch her breath. Chest heaving she climbed onto the chariot and sat. ‘This weapon is more dangerous than we thought.’ Luna looked over at the sword, a writing she couldn’t read glowed midnight blue, the same color as her magic. ‘We nearly used all our magic carrying it four chariots away! We must inform Celestia as soon as possible.’
Twilight turned to Spike, “I want you to stay here and look after the library while I’m gone.”
“But Twilight, I want to know what happens.” Spike groaned. “You and the girls get to have all the fun.”
“I’m sorry, Spike. Somepony needs to stay at the library while we’re away. We’ll be back in a few days and I’ll be sure to keep you updated on what's going on.” She replied pulling Spike into a hug.
“Alright, Twilight. Just be careful, Okay?”
“We will, I’ll see you soon.” Fluttershy walked out of the library followed by the rest of the girls. “Are you ready to go girls?” Twilight asked.
Twilight and the others nodded in response. “Hey, why are there so many chariots? I thought it was just the princess and Shining here.” Rainbow asked.
“Princess Luna was planning on having Wolf come to Canterlot anyway. The other was for another set of guards that were outside, they’re taking the train back.” Shining answered, “Are you all ready to go?”
“Yepperooni.” Pinkie said, hopping into Twilight and Wolfs chariot.
The rest of the girls loaded into the remaining chariots. “Then let’s get this show on the road.” Shining said, nodding to the pegasi at the front.
“I’ve never flown before, Master. Is this safe?” Wolf asked.
“It’s the safest way to travel.” She said with a smile as they started to travel upward.
