Luna sat atop her throne in the almost deserted main hall of Canterlot castle, two guards standing on either side of her throne, the light of the moon shining through the many stained windows depicting equestrian history. She gazed across the empty hall. It was so quiet that you could hear a pin drop. “This is a waste of time.” She thought “No one ever has need of us, they will just wait until morning and speak with our sister.”
Ever since Luna had returned from the moon she had not received a single visitor (not that she was particularly popular before her banishment either). There was no doubt in her mind that the citizens of Equestria were frightened of her. Did they not know that she was no longer Nightmare Moon, or if they did it made the thought all the more painful a thought.
“Notify me if anypony has need of us.” she ordered her guard as she left the room.
“Understood princess” the guard replied.
Luna walked out the door, down the hall and up the spiral staircase leading to her bedchamber. Blue magic pulsed around the handle of the door leading to her room, and it swung open revealing the chamber in which she had spent most of her time as of late. She walked through the archway into her room closing off the entrance behind her. Her room was decorated with miniature stars littering her walls, which seemed to pulse ever brighter with her presence. The rest of her room was of little note; A large dark blue bed and multiple tapestries depicting many different events in Equestrian history were also present in her room.
She walked past all of that and stepped into the middle of the room to a small pool of clear blue water elevated upon a stone pedestal. It was with this that she was able to look inside the dreams of any pony she wished to. She began to go about her routine going through the many dreams and correcting any nightmares that she came across, one of which was about a baker who had all of its creations coming alive and turning on him. She looked through the rest of the dreams of any pony who needed help, and was pleased to find that barely any pony was having bad dreams. Equestria was sleeping soundly. It filled her with a sense of pride being able to help the people of Equestria, even slightly.
Luna, being done for the night, then walked over to her balcony and looked down upon the city below. “Why does no one appreciate the night like they do the day” she wondered “Why would any pony love you or your night?” She heard Nightmare Moon saying to her from within the dark recesses of her mind. “You attacked them, you threatened to shroud them in eternal night they HATE you! Stupid princess.”
“BE QUIET!” shouted Luna “We are rid of you.” Luna shook her head with tears in her eyes, she could not listen to… her again. She would not!
“You can never be rid of me, I am as much a part of you as you are of me. I will be with you until you die.”
“We will find a way to escape you, this we swear!” Luna declared.
“HA, we shall see, we shall see. Have a nice night.” Nightmare Moon's exit was executed with maniacal laughter.
Luna could feel the presence of Nightmare Moon fade away. It was relieving at the least, even if it was only temporary. Luna wiped the tears from her eyes and recovered her posture. She needed to get out for a fly. Flying in the moonlight always seemed to put her mind at ease. Luna outstretched her wings and took to the sky, the cool night air blowing through her mane as she flew. She flew around the city ascending and descending without a care in the world. In this moment she felt like a child, pure and naive. A feeling that she knew would end upon her return to the ground. After she felt relaxed once again she began to turn back toward the castle, when she spotted a grey and blue unicorn aimlessly walking the streets of the sleeping city.
