Majin Moon: Interlude 1: Dusk

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

From the dark entrance of the Zealous ruins, a dark figure emerges.

The figure is tall, at least as tall as celestia, and carries herself with a sense of authority.

The shadows clinging to her drip off of her coat in rivers, as if it were wet paint, seemingly evaporating into the wind.

She gazes at her surroundings, slowly taking them in with her luminous turquoise eyes.

Surrounding her, are the dark shadows and buildings of a once beautiful city.
Buildings that she remembers so clearly.

When she does not find any sign of life, she moves on to the next part of the crumbled city.

She scans her surroundings carefully, no detail slipping past her gaze.

Right as she is about to pass two large columns leading to another part of the ruins, she stops in her tracks.

Looking back, her eyes lock on a far off wall.

She slowly walks over to the wall, never taking her eyes off of its ancient hieroglyphs.

Her eyes slowly scan the markings, taking them in with a reminiscent gaze.

Ruined depictions of a tall winged unicorn gracing her subjects with her wisdom and guidance dance across the cracked and broken walls, continuing until the meet at the tomb, lying now empty, in the back of the room.

Her eyes glance back at the wall, but she does not linger.

Seemingly finished scanning the wall, the dark unicorn turns around and exits through the tall stone columns.

What's on the other end of the columns is another large room, connected to two halls to either side.

The unicorn looks over both of them, working her memory, before taking the left.

She continues this pattern several dozen times before finally reaching the outside again.

Moonlight spills over the sand dusted land, illuminating the ancient and crippling buildings.

The pony, taking all of this in, looks up to the sky.

The full moon reflects in her blue eyes, an unreadable expression flashing across her face for a moment, before she returns to a more neutral expression.

Looking back down over the ruined landscape, the pony walks down the steps of the large, slate, zealous temple and stops when her hooves sink into the cool sand.

She looks down at her hooves with a confused expression, lifting the hoof and checking it. Studying the odd feeling of sand on her hooves.

She gazes at the sand more closely, an inquisitive intelligence flashing in her eyes.

She extends a small magical wisp, filling the object, but relaying mundane information.

sediments.

She snorts dismissively, looking back up and continuing her trek.

She takes long, slow strokes through the ruined city.

Gazing at every building she passes as if she expects them to hold something long forgotten secret.

But she finds nothing.

No ponies, no statues...

As she realizes these things the pony stops in her tracks.

She looks around her, seemingly in some round plaza with a large dry fountain in the center, and takes a deep breathe.

A turquoise glow wraps around her spiraling horn like silk strands on a spinning wheel, as she concentrates on a spell.

The glow grows brighter and thicker as she pumps more concentration into the spell, then...

A large pulse surges through the entire city.

Washing over buildings and plants like a gentle wave stroked by the moon.

It doesn't stop at the borders of the city either, as it reaches beyond the dead land.

It washes over miles and miles of sand and dust...

Until it reaches another city.

She opens her eyes briefly, eyes pulsing in the night as images of a bright city fill her vision.

Ponies frolicked and play in the streets, while cubical sandstone buildings tower from the ground.

Information continues to flood her mind, images, and sounds, and so many things.

Until she has had enough.

She closes her eyes for a second, cutting off the spell.

When she opens them again, then no longer glow with a brilliance that fills the night. But rather glow with a soft shade, like a lamp turned down for more comfort in the embrace of darkness.

The pony takes one more scan of her surroundings, then disappears in a shower of turquoise sparks.

My heart pounds in my ears as I race down the aisles.

Ponies, stalls, and stands pass me in a blur as I gallop faster and faster.

I need to get to there now! I'm on the clock right now.

Dammit I wish I had a horn, than I wouldn't have to race through this whole city just to get to the capitol.

I quickly duck under a beam two ponies were carrying, narrowly missing clocking myself.

“Whew, that was clo- OSE!”

Out of nowhere, I crash into another pony, sending us both sliding across the dirt.

“Ugh...jeez, watch where your- Moira!?” The voice shouts in surprise.

I slowly get back up with a grunt, holding my head as I look up to see a familiar, concerned, face staring back at me.

“Amber? What are you doing out here? I thought you were meeting with the foreign ministers right now.”

Amber, being the Minister of foreign affairs she is, started to panic again, also triggering my panic again.

Yay! Panic party.

“I AM! I was busy making sure my brother didn't burn down the house and then realized the time.
Why are you in such a hurry?” she asks, jittering a bit with nervous energy.

I pause at this, as that sense of dread that was looming over me came back in full force.

I look around quickly, making sure nopony was listening in, then lean in and quietly ask her, “Do you remember Carma’s old prophecy?”

Amber, ever the inquisitive mare she is, drops all of her nervous energy to ask, “You mean your ancestor who said the end of the world was coming?”

I nod quickly, than ask, “And what date did it say “she” would return?” I ask pointedly, becoming more and more self conscious of the time i've spent talking to my friend.

Her eyes widen when she connects the dots.

“Wait...do you believe the prophecy?” She asks, only ever having half believed the old mare's tale, but still cautious of it.

What!? Does she seriously not grasp the seriousness of this prophecy?
Why won't anypony believe me when I tell them the end of the world is coming?

Oh. yeah I guess that makes sense.

I shake my head to clear my thoughts, looking back at the cautious looking Amber.

“Amber please,” I beg”, this is serious. I need you to warn the foreign ministers of the danger.
Please Amber, you're the only one that can do this for me!”

My nerves are getting the better of me by now, and i'm sure I look crazy. But dammit, I have to convince her to evacuate the ministers.

My heart sinks when she looks back at me with uncertainty.

“Moira, you need to calm down and think about thi-”

“Amber listen to me-”

“No Moira, listen to yourself. It's just a prophecy Moira.
The end of the world is NOT coming. So you need to calm down and think about what it is you're doing. Okay?”

I can't believe this. My best friend is sitting here telling me that my ancestors prophecy is a joke.
That she doesn't believe me!

Well, with or without her help I still have an obligation to save this city.

I back away from Amber slowly, shaking all over and holding back tears.

“Moira?” Amber asks, concern lacing her voice.

I bolt off, straight to the capitol.

I hear Amber call after me in the distance, but I don't stop.

I can't stop.

As I gallop down the aisles and roads I silently pray to Faust that I’m not too late already.

In a burst of turquoise light, and a shower of sparks, the dark unicorn reappears, startling all the ponies nearby.

Immediately, the unicorn begins to take in it's surroundings.

A well decorated room at least fifty by fifty long and wide, with Chairs set up in a large acr on either side.(all filled mind you.)

Banners hung from walls depicting strange symbols that the unicorn instantly dubbed as “new Arabic.”

“What is the meaning of this!?” Booms a loud voice.

The unicorn turns to see, at the largest table in the room, a tall brown stallion with a slick blonde mane looking down at her.

Judging by his blue garments and larger stature he appears to be of higher office.

“And who clepe us?” the unicorn ask in her archaic tongue.

Her voice reverberates, feeling as though she were talking directly into their very souls.

Everypony present, except for the unicorn and the stallion addressed, shiver at the haunting voice.

“I am Haakim, prince of Saddle Arabia, and counselor of this meeting, which you so rudely interrupted.”

The unicorn's eyes, just barely noticeably, slightly narrow as the glow in her eyes increases just a notch.

“Do not rede us stallion, we are the queen Majin, thou would do well to learn thy place.” She threatens subtly.

Haakim’s eyes go wide for a moment, before settling in a deep frown.

“Majin? As in Majin Moon? You expect me to believe that you're the mythical unicorn from Carmin lore?” He asks disbelievingly.

Haakim snorts, then calls out, “Guards!”

Instantly, four guards, all with sandy coats and orange eyes, march into the room, saluting Haakim.

His eyes never leave Majin as he addresses them, “Please escort “Miss Moon” off the estate and hold her for questioning.”

The guards immediately move to detain the odd unicorn.

Majin’s eyes follow them with a hard gaze and begin to glow a bright turquoise.

Suddenly, the shadows in the corners of the room leap from their spots and ensnare the guards, wrapping around them as a thick liquidy substance, completely immobilizing them.

“Thou would be wise not to swink in yon superiors matters, stallion”, she says, her haunting voice chilling the very air as the guards began to scream and panic.

The shadows ensnaring the guards begin to constrict around their throats and legs, causing them to haplessly squirm for their lives as they suffocate.

“Stop!” a random voice calls out.

Majin calmly looks over to her right to see a blue mare in an ornate purple dress staring at her with pleading eyes.

“Please,” she begs, glancing over at the writhing guards, “They were only following orders!”

The shadows do not loosen, as the guards panicing began to slow down.

“It matters not to us, thy sublime ruler hast faulted and lain yon lives on the line.”

“Please, I’ll do anything!” the mare begs, eyes beginning to mist over as she watches the four ponies suffer.

The shadows slowly ease, allowing the guards to breathe, as Majin stares directly into the eyes of the pleading mare with her own glowing orbs.

“Bow to me.”

“W-what?” she asks, taken aback by the sudden odd request.

Majins eyes harden, and the shadows begin to constrict again.

“Stand before thou queen, and pledge thy loyalty to us. then we shall cease their suffering.”

Her eyes demand obedience, cold unquestioned obedience.

“Or their lives shalt be forfeit.”

This news sent a chill of terror down her spine, eyes going wide as she hears this.

The mare looks around her nervously, noting all eyes were on her.

Than, swallowing the lump in her throat, she steps down from her platform. Trotting cautiously to stand before the taller unicorn, and slowly lowers her head to the floor. Struggling to hold back tears.

Everypony gasps as the mare bows, groveling, to the tall unicorn.

Majin’s eyes return to normal as the shadows suddenly evaporate into the air, leaving four unconscious guards lying on the floor.

As soon as she releases them, the mare snaps to attention and gallops over to them, hugging one to her chest and letting tears flow.

“Brother, i’m so sorry, i'm so so sorry!” the mare bleats, hugging him even closer.

Majin turns back around to address Haakim, who now bore a scowl towards the pony.

“What do you want?” Haakim asks, loathing clear in his voice.

Majin contemplates his question, formulating a clear response that leaves no questions asked.

Majin locks eyes with Haakim as her eyes begin to glow a deep turquoise.

Suddenly, Haakim’s eyes glow the same, a look of bewilderment replacing his earlier scowl.

In his eyes, years long forgotten flash before his mind, each one leaving a lasting impression in his psyche.

Images of a much older Saddle Arabia, images of hundreds of ponies and a utopian city...images of Princess Luna ruling over them, and beside her a young blue unicorn with aqua eyes.

Suddenly, the images stop, and Haakim gasps as he starts breathing again; the turquoise glow leaving his eyes.

“what we want…”

All eyes focus on the tall unicorn as spools of arcane energy lace her horn in a vortex.

“Is Arabia.”

The two words echo with ancient power, shaking their very fibers.

A sudden flash of turquoise as bright as the sun is the last thing anypony sees before plunging into an abyss of unending darkness.

I skid to a stop as a wall of blue power washes over me like a tsunami wave, nearly toppling me onto my back.

The wave, the magic...it felt like an unending blackness, and sent chills down my spine.

I look up towards the capitol building, noting the complete silence that emanated from it.

It was a silence you could hear.

I note, as I stand paralyzed where I stand, a dark figure calmly trotting out of the front of the building.

Everything beyond the lights touch was complete darkness.

A wall of black where mere shadow should have stood.

And it oozed off her coat as if it was some sick liquefied shadow.

I'm not the only one who noticed either, the entire city has fallen silent and are staring at the dark figure as she comes closer and closer.

“Who is that?” I hear one pony say from nearby.

“What's going on? Is this an event?” another, masculine voice asks.

Soon the entire city is alive as ponies murmur to themselves.

But I don't have to guess who it is.

My ancestor had already prophesied it, and now it has finally come true.

Ponies begin to part ways, sticking side-by-side, hair-to-hair as they watch the unicorn with mixed expressions.

...the tall unicorn stops in a round plaza a few yards away; a bubbling fountain in its center

Her icy glowing eyes wash over all of us with a calculating gaze.

For some reason, I duck just before her gaze would flick over me. A sigh of relief washing over me for some odd reason.

As she finishes scanning the crowd her horn flares to life, turquoise strands whipping around her like moonlight.

“Citizens of Saddle Arabia!”
Her magically augmented voice booms over the city, chilling the soul of everypony as her haunting voice reverberates in them.

“whosoever shall gaze hither may realize yon whilom queen's return!”

Slowly, I begin to slink back, never taking my eyes off the imposing unicorn as I back trot away from the scene.

“Bow before us now,True ruler to Arabia and scion of dusk!”

The unicorn's voice carries a haunting tune that chills, the fountain gaining frost at its edges.

It is a declaration rather than a question, this much I am certain, as I gaze fearfully at the dark pony.

But nopony bows before the queen.

The stillness persists, and the Unicorn’s expression darkens as her glowing eyes sweep over the crowd once more.

Ponies flinch back as her gaze washes over them once more.

Her gaze lands on the pony nearest to her, and everypony watches as the tall unicorn slowly approaches her.

"Bow before thou queen." she says in an authoritative tone.

The pony was a bright sunburst color, with orange shaded hooves and an expression of flippancy etched on her face.

"Why should I bow to you?" she asks with levity.

The queen’s eyes narrow and a flash a bright turquoise.

"thou WILL bow before us."

The pony locks eyes with her and, with her body trembling as if she wanted to move, her eyes glow a steady blue.

She gazes at her with an expression of pure terror, before slowly slumping.

All traces of emotion drain from her face, and she appears hollow and cold.

Everypony watches in awe and fear as the now emotionless pony dips her head at the queen in a bow.

Majin, seeming nonplused by her action, turn to the staring crowd once again. A cold merciless stare being shot right back at them.

“Hear us now Arabians.” she begins; strands of magic swirling around her horn.

A sharp chill pierces the air, and the light seems to dim in the sky.

“A new era shalt forsooth descend upon thee, and thou will all see us as thou new Queen!”

The magic around her horn excellerates, and frost begins to form on my hooves and coat.
I quickly shake it off and puff out a steam cloud.

“Our era begins today!”

The magic peaks, and a pulse of turquoise magic splashes over us like a tidal wave.
Some ponies shout as it washes over them, and i hold up a hoof to shield my eyes; but when I open my eyes again, All the effects of her magic had been purged.

The fountain was once again free of frost, but a lingering chill still tinged the air.

Everypony is silent, the only sound coming from the freely flowing fountain.

The unicorn looks around again after her proclamation, seeing fearful faces, but still finds no recognition in the faces of the crowds.

Feeling insulted, as if history had just forgotten about her, the unicorn frowns ever so slightly.

“who are we?” She asks in a low tone, with just the mildest drop irritation showing through.

“Y-your…,”I gulp, looking around me at all the ponies that are now staring,” Your...Majin Moon.”

Everypony gasps at that. Some begin to whisper to themselves as the rest just stare in stunned silence.

Majin, however shows the first sign of joy in her otherwise cold demeanor, and spares the slightest of smiles.

“Ah, a herald of our coming. Tis truly touching.” she says, walking over towards me.

“What is thy name, young mare?”

She’s now towering over me. Her imposing gaze seemingly boring into my soul.

I struggle with my words, and her face hardens back into a frown.

“I-I'm Moira.”

Majin seems to think about something for a moment, then says, “Moira? How humorous that thou name would fit this day.”

With those final parting words, Majin trots back to the center of the plaza, the previously frozen over fountain catching her attention for a moment as she examines the effects.

Meanwhile, i’m catching up on the near heart attack that I had narrowly missed when she was standing over me.

“It's true…” I whisper to myself.

Without a second thought, I charge back into the crowd, my destination is no longer the capitol, it's clear I won't find anything there...at all

No, I've got to find Amber and find a way out of this nightmare before Majin plants her hooves too far into the city.
