Twilight Sparkle had little experience when it came to putting together social events, yet here she was planning a birthday party. This probably sounds unusual, as everypony knows that Pinkie Pie is the one who plans parties. The only problem was, it was Pinkie's birthday that needed planning. Twilight had taken it upon herself to make sure everything was perfect. After all, she and Pinkie had been dating for close to two years, and Twilight had a very important present for her marefriend.

As it was, preparations were nearly complete, and rightfully so as the party was tomorrow. Twilight was talking with her other four friends and her number one assistant, making sure nothing was left undone.

“Decorations?” Twilight asked.

“Check.” Rarity answered, double checking the last streamer.

“Entertainment.” Twilight asked.

“I got everything arranged with Vinyl and Octavia, so check that one, too.” Rainbow Dash affirmed.

“Refreshments?” Twilight asked.

“Every kind you could think of, Twi. Checkaroony.” Applejack replied.

“Cake and presents?” Twilight asked.

Fluttershy and Spike entered the throne room, the pegasus carrying a large chocolate cake and the dragon pulling a wagon with a small mountain of wrapped gift boxes.

“Check and check.” Spike confirmed.

“Alright, that should be everything.” Twilight sighed, relieved to know everything seemed to be in order.

“Um, Twilight? I can't help but notice that you haven't told us what gift you got for Pinkie. If you don't mind, can you tell us?” Fluttershy questioned.

“Yeah, Twilight. It's gotta be something awesome, considering you love Pinkie too much to give her anything less than the best.” Rainbow agreed.

“Well...okay. As you all know, Pinkie and I have been together for quite some time.” Twilight started.

Twilight used her magic to levitate a small velvet box out from underneath her left wing. Her friends' eyes all widened. Twilight took a deep breath before continuing.

“I wanted to give her something important, something special, something to express how much I love being with her.” Twilight finished, opening the box to reveal a diamond engagement ring attached to a golden chain.

“Hoo-wee, Twilight! I reckon Pinkie is in for one hay of a surprise!” Applejack exclaimed.

“Do you think she'll like it?” Twilight asked.

“Darling, I daresay she will love it, almost as much as she loves you.” Rarity assured, with everypony else nodding in agreement.

Twilight closed the box and hid it back under her wing.

“Thanks, girls. We should finish up so you can all go home. We don't wanna be tired during the party.” Twilight concluded.

The five mares and one dragon did some last-minute tidying up, double checked a few crucial points, and once they were satisfied the guests headed home in anticipation of the next day's events.

Twilight had a little trouble getting to sleep, nervous about what she planned to do tomorrow evening, but eventually she managed to drift off, dreaming of the mare who had captured her heart.

The next day, Twilight was a nervous wreck. Despite Spike's constant attempts to calm her down, Twilight could only focus on what might go wrong. It was only after Spike pulled one of the oldest tricks in the book and moved a chair Twilight had been about to sit in, thus causing her to fall on her rump, that Twilight finally snapped out of it. Spike gave her a disapproving stare.

“I'm sorry, Spike. I know I shouldn't worry so much, but I've never felt for anypony the way I feel about Pinkie. She's just too important for anything to go wrong.” Twilight explained.

“It'll be okay, Twilight. You just have to trust that everything will be fine.” Spike assured.

“Alright. I'll try my best.” Twilight sighed, putting on a smile.

The rest of the day was spent double- (and at Twilight's request, triple) checking everything while waiting for the guest of honor to arrive.

Meanwhile, Rainbow Dash and Applejack were in the process of guiding a blindfolded Pinkie Pie to Twilight's castle.

“So, where are we going?” Pinkie asked.

“Can't tell ya, it's a surprise.” Applejack answered.

“Ooh! I love surprises!” Pinkie exclaimed, grinning.

“Yeah, we know. You always say that.” Rainbow Dash remarked.

“Well, duh! That's because it's always true!” Pinkie explained.

“Let's keep movin', you two. We're almost there.” Applejack reminded.

The trio approached the front doors of the castle, proceeding inside and into the throne room.

“Alright, Pinkie, walk forward a couple steps and take off the blindfold.” Rainbow ordered.

Pinkie did as she was told, stepping forward and placing a hoof behind her head to untie the blindfold. She fiddled with the knot for a moment until she felt a warm glow envelop her hoof and the blindfold. She felt the knot untie itself as her hoof was moved to hold the blindfold in place.

“Okay, let go.” Pinkie heard a familiar voice say.

Pinkie did, and gawked at the sight before her. The throne room of Twilight's castle looked like it had been shot at with ten party cannons. Decorations were everywhere. On one side of the room, Vinyl Scratch sat behind her turntables with Octavia standing next to her holding her cello, on the other several tables filled with all sorts of food accented by a huge chocolate cake. Her family was all there. And best of all, standing right in front of her was Twilight.

“SURPRISE!!!” shouted all the guests.

Pinkie shot forward, nearly knocking her marefriend off her hooves as she hugged her tight.

“Oh, Twi-twi, you didn't have to do all this for me!” Pinkie exclaimed.

“Of course I did. I wouldn't be a very good marefriend if I didn't give you the best party you could ever hope for. You know I love you too much to give you anything less.” Twilight countered.

Pinkie responded by giving Twilight a quick kiss. The party commenced. Ponies danced, told stories, and partook in the many refreshments.

Soon, it was time for Pinkie to open her presents. She was seated on Twilight's throne as Spike brought in the wagon full of gifts. Pinkie received plenty of wonderful new things, such as a new pair of oven mitts, a new apron, a new recipe book, and a new set of state-of-the-art kitchenware. Finally, it was time for Twilight's present.

Twilight took a deep breath and began to speak.

“Pinkie, when I first came to Ponyville, I never knew you would change my life they way you have. I wouldn't change the twenty-one months we've been together for anything in the world. No words can explain the feeling I get when I see your face and kiss your lips, and I never want it to go away.” Twilight started.

Pinkie began to feel joyful tears welling up as Twilight continued her speech.

“Wherever I am, I want you to be there with me. Whatever happens, I want you beside me through everything life throws at us. I want you to be the first pony I see when I wake up in the morning and the last pony I see before I go to sleep each night.” Twilight intoned.

She paused, levitating a box from under her wing, kneeling her front legs and taking Pinkie's hoof in her own, keeping her gaze on Pinkie. Gasps rang out across the throne room. Pinkie clapped her free hoof over her mouth, her tears now falling openly.

“Pinkamena Diane Pie, will you marry me?” Twilight finally asked, opening the box to reveal the ring inside it.

Pinkie was speechless. Finally finding her voice, she managed to reply through her tears.

“Y-yes! YES!” she shouted, kissing Twilight with as much passion as she could muster up at that moment.

Twilight returned the kiss in earnest, breaking it only to place the ring's chain around Pinkie's neck before re-locking their lips the moment the ring was in place.

Cheers rang out through the throne room. The applause was deafening. Pinkie's parents and sisters hugged in complete joy. Even Maud was smiling.

Twilight and Pinkie eventually had to part from their embrace, both now crying out of sheer happiness.

“Oh, Twi-twi, this was the best birthday ever! I love you so much!” Pinkie exclaimed.

“I love you too, Pinkie. And now we'll always be together.” Twilight answered, enacting another kiss which Pinkie happily returned.
