Chapter 1: I am Midnight Moon (Midnight Moon)
When I was 3, I woke up one day to a gray morning. I looked around for my parents, but I couldn't find them. I got cold so I started a fire in the fireplace. Too bad I didn't know exactly what I was doing. I ended up burning the house down. Oops. I'll always miss my old home and it's beautiful green floors, turquoise colored walls, and almost golden colored roof. I sat there, crying for a while. My wing had been injured, and my heart broken. I sat there until my mom's friend, Golden Laughter, found me. She was an orange unicorn with bright green eyes and a golden mane and tail, and her Cutiemark was a smile. She had an orphanage, so she took me there. Well, the orphanage had two foals who weren't exactly orphans, their parents were just out of town for a few months in Germaney (Ger-mane-e) and the foals were jerks. Seriously. But I guess I do have to thank them, cause without them I wouldn't have made friends with Ivory Keys. It happened like this.
I walked through the hallway to my room that I share with somepony named Ivory Keys, when I heard crying from one of the school rooms. I ran in to help, and when I got there I saw two foals beating up an ivory colored unicorn colt with piercing blue eyes and a mane and tail the color of ebony. "Come on, Ivory! Scream for help! Nopony cares enough about you anyways! Blank-flank!" yelled a golden filly. Her friend laughed. I felt anger boil inside me.
"Hey! You got a problem with Blank-flanks?!" I screamed in rage. They turned and laughed.
"Look! Another worthless Blank-flank!" they smiled at me and started beating me up until I was bleeding. I swear my leg was broken. I growled an inequine growl. I looked to them, baring my teeth which grew into fangs, extending my wings that changed into bat wings, my pupils dilated. They looked to me, eyes wide. "Go... away." I snarled. They beat me up more, claiming I was a monster. I cried helplessly. Miss Laughter found me and kicked out the foals. At least they got what they deserved. Miss Laughter looked at me and sighed.
"You're a half bat-pony. Should've guessed. But, you probably shouldn't change in public and scare ponies." Miss Laughter said. I nodded. The colt walked up to me.
"I'm Ivory Keys. I wanted to thank you for helping me, or I might not've been able to walk right now." He said happily. "I don't even care you're a half bat-pony!"
"I'm Midnight Moon. And you're really nice!" I said happily. We laughed, and we were happy.
I smiled at Ivory. It was another day that ponies came in and adopted foals. We had gone through many of these with no luck, but this time I was going to talk to ponies and get to know them. Maybe we didn't get adopted 'cause we were blank-flanks, but it's not like I control that. I saw a cream colored Pegasus with a chocolate mane and tail. Something seemed to click inside of me, but I don't understand what. I decided to talk to her. "Hi, I'm Midnight Moon!" I smiled at her. She smiled back.
"I'm Cream. Nice to meet you. Do you like music?" She asked. I nodded happily.
"I also like art!" I piped excitedly. She giggled.
"I like your energy. Where's Miss Laughter?" Cream asked. I pointed to Miss Laughter, Cream smiled. I watched as they talked and laughed. Suddenly Cream picked me up and put me on her back. "C'mon, kiddo. Let's go to my house! I adopted you." I smiled brighter than I have ever smiled before.
"Hold on, I need to talk to my friend!" I said, getting of her back. I found Ivory looking around. "Ivory! I got adopted!" I said excitedly.
"So did I! He's awesome!" Ivory said in excitement. He was so excited, he looked like he was gonna explode.
"Bye, Ivory!" I waved back before following Cream to her house.
Her house was pretty big and awesome, but the inside was crazy. "It looks just like my old home! Where I used to live before I accidently burned it down!" I said in surprise. Cream gasped.
"It does?!" Cream asked in surprise. I nodded in confusion. Cream giggled. "What a coincidence." Cream said in awe. I walked around and found everything exactly where it was in my old home. I was excited, but I felt slightly a twinge of sadness and guilt. It was a reminder that I couldn't see my parents. It started getting dark when I had seen all of the house. I gasped. I could change whenever I wanted to, but I couldn't stop the change at night. I looked around and found a bedroom that used to be mine in my old house. I locked myself in and sat on the bed. I've realized I never sleep. I can't sleep at night, and I can't sleep during the day. I changed into bat-pony form and snuck out the window. I flew around feeling the wind in my mane. I loved my nightly flights, the beautiful moonlight, the night-time creatures, and the moon lily I saw around. I decided to give my wings a rest, so I sat down on a house's roof. I stared at Luna's moon, loving the coolness of tonight. I heard something land next to me, but I couldn't see what it was because a cloud covered the moon. I sat there completely still, worried that somepony else was out for a nightly fly. I was worried that if they saw me, they would be afraid of me. I realized I was holding my breath, but I wasn't gonna make my presence known. I stood up and was about to take off, when the cloud moved from in front of the moon. It was like a spotlight illuminating everything and making me stand out like a sore thumb. I turned and saw a familiar looking pony, but she was a bat-pony like me. I realized quickly that it was Cream. I stared at her, and she stared back.
"You're a bat-pony too?! Why didn't you tell me?!" I asked. She shrugged.
"I honestly don't know why I didn't tell you. How're you doing?" Cream asked. My initial shock had dissipated, and now I felt relaxed. I sat back down next to her.
"I'm doing good. So many things have happened today. I can't believe you're a bat-pony, though!" I said. She giggled. We sat in silence, enjoying the sounds of the night.
