Is It Worth It?

Lonely Alicorn

Has it really been hundred years since that day...? All of my friends, family and anypony I ever knew was dead and I was the last pony in Ponyville that was still alive... I looked outside and it was a gray, cold morning. The weather seemed fitting all things considering. I stood there at the window wearing a black funeral dress looking at the cold sky, watching silently as I had a basket next to me with all of my friend's personal stuff. I grabbed it and head outside to the funeral and walked slowly knowing I would have to see them again. It pained me to do this but I knew I couldn't turn down Princess Celestia offer to see them. After about several minutes of walking, I arrived and saw, Celestia, Luna and Cadence standing there wearing the same thing.

I had put my mane beneath a hat and donned a thick veil so no one could see my face. I saw Cadence place a flower down on my brother's grave and was helped by Celestia. Of all the ponies that understood losing somepony close, Candace alone knew that feeling along with myself. Candace leaned on Celesita's wing for the support as Luna approached her.  With a sad smile, I put a hoof on Cadace's back and said,

"I am sorry for your loss, I know how much my brother loved you and how happy you made him. I am very glad you came into his life."

"Thank you," Candace answered sincerely.

Those who were left were my dear friends I had meet when I first arrived in Ponyville. Clestia had come alone for me and Luna had showed up for the same reason. It was especially hard for me to see Cadeance's frail figure as she placed a flower down lovingly. In my mind, I would always remember the day when we first meet. One by one, each of our treasured friends were re-buried. Clestia and Luna had invited me to come and stay with them for awhile but I politely declined their invitations. Tearfully, they said their goodbyes and left.

With everypony finally gone, I slowly pulled down the veil and let my mane down. Anypony who looked at me would have seen a young beautiful mare with purple mane in her early twenties. Looking at Cadance  in mourning standing by an open grave they would likely imagine that she'd lost her husband through some tragedy. Nopony would never guess that I was actually over hundred  years old or that my freinds had died of old age. We had been together for sixty long and wonderful years, practically a lifetime. And now they was gone from this world forever.

Looking at the tombstone and its dates I was reminded of the day they told me their decision.

"I don't want to become immortal  Twilight," Spike said calmly. "I want to have a happy normal life with you as my friend. I know it may be selfish, but will you grant me that request? Even if I am just me?"

Hot tears had run down my cheek as I told him yes.

"Spike... of course I'll grant the request, but… if you're not immortal, I won't be able to see you again. I won't age the same way you do. Things won't be easy."

"I know that Twilight," he'd said with absolute certainty. "They never have been, but I love you more than anything in the world and I know I want to be with you for as long as I live. I know… I know I'll grow old before you do and that you'll outlive me. But for as long as I live I want to be with you."

"I want to be with you too..." I said.

I had asked my friends the same thing but they too, rejected my offer saying the same thing. They had gone in with their eyes wide open knowing the difficulties, knowing how it would end one day. But I had never for one moment regretted my decision to be with them. I had gotten to spend more than seventy years with the person she I cared about. To me, that was better than a thousand without him. Each year, I had given them the option of becoming like me, of becoming immortal. And each year they had declined. They knew that they would die but they stood by what they said and wanted to live and die naturally. Even as they grew old and infirm, even as they could see the end coming they had not changed their minds.

I was crying now as I remembered, they'd told me one last time that they loved me, and then they had just slowly expired as I sat by their sides.

I heard soft hoofsteps coming from behind me and knew who it had to be. I quickly wiped away the tears before putting on a stern mask and turning around.

"Hello Cadance."

"Hello Twilight," she answered.

She was in a white blouse and black outline, her long pink, light purple mane hanging down loose. She was holding a dark blue shield with a purple centerpiece. I nodded once. Actually, it had been the other me that had said that. The words had been harsh and had come following telling me to not get to attached to anypony. I warned her that if she ever said that again, I would never speak to her again.

"I tried to spare you this Twilight," she said. "We're immortal; loving mortals can only end in tragedy."

"You still don't know anything," I replied sadly. "If you ever truly love someone, then maybe you'll understand that being with them is the greatest joy there is. No amount of pain or sorrow will ever take away the happiness I shared with them."

"That's not true you know," she said. "I loved your brother, please come back with us. Being here will only bring more pain."

"No," I replied. "My home is here. I rather stay here with my friends then be away from them."

"Don't say that!" she cried out. "You're immortal and that is never going to change! You belong with your family, with your own kind! Come home with me!"

"No," I answered. "My place is with my friends, always."

She turned but before she could leave, I stopped her.

"I'm sorry about what I said. I know you loved my brother. That was wrong of me to say what I said." I said.

She nodded and walked away.

After a few more minutes of silence, I walked back to the house, crying to myself. Before I arrived home, I changed directions and went over to a cliff. I was by myself, standing at the edge of a high cliff staring down into the dark abbeys. There was no world for me without my friends to give me light or their love to give her shelter. Immortality held nothing at all for me if it had to be spent without anypony to share it with.

'Let's be together again...'

I took a single step and fell down into the dark abyss below. After what felt like an entirety, I had landed on the ground. My wings were broken, I was hurt but still alive. Why...? Why was I given immortality? I can't die, All of my friends are dead. What's the point...?
