"I always knew you were a traitor." one of my comrades growled swinging his sword towards me. Blocking it with mine I could feel the exhaustion begin to consume my body as my sword began to feel heavier with every attack I was capable to block, not noticing the cracks forming on the steel of the blade. "You know how they treat us. You know how they look at us and yet you still decide to protect them..." he shouted as our blades collided. Looking at the mother and daughter a few feet behind me. "Why Venex?"
"Because there just has to be a better way then just taking their home!" I yell pushing him back and swinging the sword with all my might, only to have it shatter into peaces once coming in contact with his. "Shit !" I cursed in my mind. I tried backing away but in doing so the tip of his sword managed to reach my face and cut my left eye as it came down with all his force. Letting out a painful cry I covered my eye feeling the blood quickly running down my face. Quickly looking back at the little girl, I began to stand back up even though I know what the outcome would be not long after my own comrade's blade quickly cut past my abdomen leaving a fairly large opening where blood immediately began bursting out from. Now the only thing I remember was falling to the ground and while trying to reach for a dagger inside of my black bag a few inches away from me, I could hear him say something under his breath but not being able to hear him through the massive explosion of magic that seemed only to affect us changelings from that point on, I can't remember anything...
* * * * * *
" Hey~ ..." a childish voice echoed "Are you okay~...” she asked. I guess noticing the blood because at that moment her voice quickly changed into a panic. "EM!", she shouted her voice could be heard breaking to fear, followed by a second voice. "EM! Hurry this guy’s hurt!...EM!" I assume I passed out cold from there, because the next thing I knew I woke up in a small bedroom with several bandages around my abdomen and left side of my face.
"Oh you're awake!" said a woman holding a bowl with what seemed to be hot water. Her long black hair combined with her light blue eyes made it a bit difficult for me to not stare as she walked closer and closer to the side of the bed. "It's best if you lay down." she said, sitting in a chair she pulled from a small table ”We wouldn't want your wounds to open up now would we."
"Who...who are you?" was all I managed to say as I felt my throat dry. To my surprises it seemed like she heard the dryness in my voice so she poured a glass of water and handed it to me.
"My name's Emily." She answered with a warm smile. "I'm not going to ask how you go injured but if you don't mind me asking for your name?"
"My...name is Venex..." I replied handing back the empty glass to her.
"Well Venex you’re lucky that we found you only a few blocks from our house. If we took you to the hospital you probably may not have made it, do to the amount of blood you lost." she sighed under her breath making it obvious she was confused
"Are you come kind of doctor?" I asked caching her off guard.
"Well no...Not yet, I'm a nurse actually." She said standing up and heading for the door. "You should rest now"
"Thank you." I whispered under my breath and placed my head back on the pillow for the bed. I began to look around the room from the bed and noticed a picture on the small table across the room. Trying to get a closer look for inspection at the same a soft female voice caused me to flinch as she spoke.
"That's a picture of us and our parents..." a girl with light brown eyes, long dark brown hair and light skin wearing black pants and a strange black T-shirt with a yellow smiley face with "X's" for eyes, not something you'd see in Equestria. "They...died about eight years ago..." she continued walking closer.
When the hell... "I'm so sorry for your loss..." I said after clearing my throat.
"It’s okay." She said in a chipper tone. "I was nine years old when it happened, plus living with my sisters isn't all bad." she sat down in the same chair were Emily sat. "My name's Jessica, but you can just call me Jess." As she smiled I noticed her hazel eyes and her dark brown hair with curls at the ends. "So how old are you?" she asked bluntly.
"I'm sorry?" I replied confused
"How old are you?" she repeated again.
"...I'm nineteen years old...why?" I asked confused.
"Well you see my sisters ex-boyfriend is on his way here and we really don't have the time to deal with him right now so could do me a huge favor?" she asked with a smile. Even though one eye was bandaged up I could see where this was going. As much as I didn't want to be part of this drama, they did save my life, so this "favor" was the least I could do.
"And that favor would be?" in an instant I began to regret asking as a smile grew on her face once I did.
"It's simple really...all you have to do is pretend your her boyfriend for a few minutes and that's it." She smiled as she finished. Before I could object the doorbell echoed around the house causing her to quickly shoot up out of her seat and I'm pretty sure I heard her whisper, "right on queue " and walked out leaving the door wide opened.
Not sure on what to do. I stood up and walked towards a small mirror that hung on the wall to left of the bed and began to unwrap the bandages only to reveal a dark red scar of dried blood over my eyebrow and at least three inches under the lower part of my eye. Before I would make any comment, I could hear loud shouting echoing around the house.
"DON'T PLAY STUPID WITH ME JESS, I KNOW SHE'S IN THERE TELL HER TO COME OUT!" an unknown male voice shouted at the top of his lungs. "EM!” he called out.
"FOR THE LAST TIME MIKE, SHE'S NOT HERE, AND I DON'T KNOW WHERE SHE IS!" Jess shouted as well. I began making my way through the house following the loud shouts that lead down stairs. "AND EVEN IF I KNEW, LIKE HELL I WOULD TELL YOU!"
"JESS TELL ME WHERE SHE IS BEFORE I-"
"BEFORE YOU WHAT!? HUH? ARE YOU GOING TO HIT ME LIKE YOU HIT HER!?" I could her the fury in her voice. Walking faster I soon found myself standing a few feet away from the door way. The male looked at least in his mid-twenties wearing a light blue buttoned shirt and khaki colored pants, his blond hair was a mess and from where I stood he reeked with the stench of alcohol. To be fairly honest I was expecting a miner or at least a guard, not some alcoholic business man. It took him at least a few minutes to realize my presence but as soon as he did his voice became more infuriating.
"WHO THE HELL IS HE!?" He shouted looking at Jess then back at me.
I noticed the smile on her face as she looked at me. "Oh him, he's Em's new boyfriend." She taunted, only pouring fuel to the flame.
"HOW LONG HAVE THE TWO YOU BEEN DATING!" he said shoving Jess to the floor and stormed towards me.
"Listen buddy let’s just take it easy..." I said holding my hands up as if I was trying to calm down an angry dog.
"ANSWER ME!" he shouted swinging his right fist to me.
"MIKE STOP IT!" Jess cried picking herself from the floor. Taking a quick step to the left I dodged his attack and before the next one could come I instantly grabbed the back of his collar and with a swift kick to his legs, I managed to make him lose his balance and land hard on the floor.
"Let’s make this simple..." I growled as I placed my foot on the man’s chest. "If you don't stay away from them...I'll break every bone in your body...do I make myself clear?" I said lifting my foot off the man and watched as he made his way towards the door.
"This isn't over!" he shouted slamming the door with all his might leaving Jess and I in utter silence.
"That was awesome!" Cried Jess. "dude you have to teach me how to do that, I mean the way you knocked him to the floor with a single kick was-..." before she could continue to cheer she noticed the blood spreading onto the cloth on his abdomen. “Oh shit..." she cried quickly walking to me “some of the stitches must have opened..." she sat me down on the black couch of the living room. “wait here... I'll go see if we have some alcohol in the kitchen." she said running as quickly as she could. Looking at the blood on the bandage I began to feel dizzy do to the amount of blood loss.
"Really wish I could have learned that healing spell from the books I stole..." I whispered to myself. "Then again I'm not sure if I can use any magic-..." before I could finish my words, the door opened and a little girl I haven't seen before was walking in front of Em, who closed the door as they entered.
"We're home!" Em shouted. "we brought groceries and- oh my god!" She cried as she looked at my current state. "What happened!?"
"Em I can explain..." said Jess walking out with what seemed to be a bottle of liquor in one hand and a sewing kit in the other. After a brief explanation and painful stitching later Em gave a long and sorrow sigh.
"Jess, help Molly with the groceries." She ordered. As Jess did as she was told Em began to wrap up my abdomen with a new bandage as gently as she could. "I'm sorry you got involved in this mess...Mike is a hot headed jackass, who ends up throwing a tantrum if he doesn't get what he wants." she said finishing with the wrapping."from what Jess told me he was drunk...god knows what he would be capable of if you didn't interfere... thank you"
"It was the least I could do, but I have a question." I replied. "is that little girl your daughter?"
"Who Molly?" she asked. I nodded. "Oh no she's our youngest sister. She never knew our parents...she was only two years old before they passed away..." Right as I was going to give her my condolences she quickly changed the topic. "Speaking of Molly, she was the one who found you in the park laying on your back, coughing up blood...and well this morning she said she wanted to "check something out" back at the park and when we went there..." she pulled out my black bag from one of the paper bags. “We found this... I assume it must be yours?" she said handing the bag to me and to my surprised everything was in there from the books I stole from Canterlot to the dagger my comrade Thorax gifted me. Soon I began to understand something...it was only a hunch but it was something I had to find out.
"Can you tell me country we are currently on...?” I asked
"Well technically the United States of America is not a country..." she answered "...it is a union of individual states with a central government...long story short you're in Brooklyn New York...are you lost or something?" she asked.
"I'm not sure if you'll believe me...but the truth is...I'm from a different dimension..." I explained knowing what her reaction would be, and sure enough I was right, she gave me a sarcastic laugh followed be her eyes rolling as she stood up, as if I told her a bad joke. Not knowing if my magic was enough to levitate something I quickly used the only magic we were born with and transformed myself into Jess. "You have to believe me Em!" I called out perfectly mimicking Jess's voice stopping Emily in her steps. Slowly turning around, her eyes were filled with shock as she stared paralyzed at a copy of her sister, if it wasn't for the massive scar on my face it would be an identical copy if her.
"H...how...the h...hell" she stuttered not being able to get anymore words out.
"It's simple really..." I said turning back to myself. "where I come from a place where magic is something that is common and, judging by your reaction, I'm guessing it's something fictional to you..." the only response I got from her was a simple nod. "I was afraid of this..." I sighed and began explaining my story to Emily. Surprisingly she listened to each and every word I said from attacking Canterlot, to the battle with my comrades while I was trying to protect a mother and her child. It took about ten minutes for me to get through my story but once I was done Emily stood up in silence and seemed to take everything quite calmly. "So yeah....that's my story"
"If you would have told me that story before showing me proof...I would have honestly called you crazy..." she said poring a glass of liquor in a small cup. "...but what you're telling me that you're just stuck in this world?" she asked downing the entire glass.
"That is correct." I watched, as she poured some more.
"And you are not sure how you got here in the first place." she drank.
"I have a few assumptions, but yes that's right."
She sighed. “Okay I'm going to believe you, but try anything and I’ll call the police." She said making her way towards the kitchen.
"Emily..." I called out to her. "Thank you for believing me...and for saving my life"
"Don't mention it...It is my job to help others after all." she smiled tossing me a black plastic bag with clothing in it " Molly wasn't sure what you would like so she got you all black...I hope it fits though and please just call me Em." she said walking into the kitchen leaving me with my train of thought and a smile on my face as I began trying out the clothes, not knowing that something bigger was on its way.
