This tale follows a group of ponies on an expedition to the uncharted eastern deserts. The venture is sponsored by Millionaire philanthropist Fancypants, who chooses an eager young Archaeology student, the famous explorer Daring Do, a Royal Guard and a master mechanic named Quickfix, to go along with him. The story centers around Dusty Relic, a young colt from Dodge Junction that got an appointment from Princess Celestia to study Archaeology at the University of Canterlot, after graduating at the top of his class and showing a profound interest in relics. He is spotted by Fancypants at the Gala, and is chosen to be team Archaeologist. As party gathers provisions and equipment, Fancypants invests in a newfangled vehicle, powered by magic and suited for a trip through the desert. The party boards a ship and sails across the sea, to the mysterious eastern deserts.
