The Adventures of a Tone-Deaf Pony

Let me lay out a scenario for you.

Imagine that you live in a world of magic and wonder, song and dance, friendship and love. This is a world where song is an integral part of every person’s lifestyle, where spontaneous musicals sprouted out of nowhere and led to beautiful melodies that would touch someone’s heart and soul.

Then imagine you were tone deaf.

Well, that scenario’s pretty much my life. Hi, I’m Fall Streaks, a weather pegasus in Equestria, and I can’t sing.

Yeah, yeah, get the giggles out now. Telling ponies that here is sorta like telling someone that you’re colorblind. Only a few will go “Oh, that’s cool,” and the rest will pretty much say “OH MY SWEET HOPPIN’ CELESTIA SING SOMETHING RIGHT NOW!” or some version of that.

Here in Equestria, being tone deaf is EXTREMELY rare, to the point where I think that I’m probably the only living pony with this condition right now. And it’s really more of a minor inconvenience than anything. If there’s a song, everyone else around me plugs their ears. It’s rather funny. I stick out like a lush, green tree in the desert when I sing. The difference is that nobody wants to see me and the tree is probably on fire.

Don’t be sad for me, I wasn’t bullied or anything during school. Actually, I was at first, but then I learned I could use my voice as a weapon, and they never bothered me again. Well, a new kid did, but that triggered a song and he ran away screaming. I’ve never laughed harder than I did that day. So I’m fine with it. It gives me a sense of power.

I just wish the bullies didn’t switch to bothering my friend after I sang. She really didn’t deserve that.

But yeah, tone deafness. Whee! It hasn’t affected my life in any way, and I have a well-paying job on the Rockville weather team, enough that with our salaries combined, me and my roommate could afford one of the homes in the Deerwood neighborhood. Oh, and you know that friend I mentioned earlier? She’s my roommate.

I swear to Celestia, if you make a single remark about us sleeping together, I will put my hoof in your face at high velocity.

Her name is Tranquility. She’s a thestral, and she works the night shift.

Don’t you laugh at that. It’s just that she has better night sight than all of us, so she commands the night shift and tells us what to do.

We’ve known each other since we were seven, when she and her foster family (who are AWESOME) moved into our neighborhood in Canterlot. It’s kinda funny. For three years, I had NO idea she was a bat pony, because something happened to her that traumatized her enough that for years she wore enchanted bracelets to make her look like a normal pegasus. She’s never told me exactly what, however. I’m not surprised, though. Back then, before Princess Luna returned, Canterlot was fairly anti-thestral. That was part of the reason she was bullied; she sounded like a thestral. Speaking of which, she has this SUPER hot- cool accent.

You heard nothing, okay? Nothing.

She’s not a normal thestral, either. Most thestrals have dark leather on their wings, she has some bluish white patches, which makes her really easy to see in moonlight. So yeah, she’s awesome. And when she sings…

I’m super jealous of her in that regard. Her accent sounds so, so good when she sings, and her voice is so amazing…

So jealous. And so in awe.

That’s it, awe. Not anything else.

But yeah, that’s the two of us. We’ve been living in Mareland for some time together, almost seven years, after we graduated from high school. We got out of Canterlot as fast as we could, as it wasn’t right for us at all, especially Tranquility. She had stopped wearing her bracelets in her senior year and had her house vandalized. She really seemed shaken up after that, although it was just some paint. So we moved here together and it’s been really nice. A lot of ponies like us, which is better than what we could say for Canterlot.

You probably wonder why I’m telling you this, yes? Well, that’s because of what happened to us. You see, not everything in Mareland was a perfect utopia. Unlike Canterlot, Deerwood is a lot more rural. We lived right next to an expansive forest, where I could take long, relaxing walks. It's really nice, actually. There is wildlife everywhere! I’ve seen foxes before, although they ran away from me when they saw me. It makes me wonder how smart they are. It’s not like I’m gonna hurt it! But they all ran. Except for one, but that happened later.

But, like I said, Canterlot was a lot more urban, so a lot of stuff changed. Unlike Canterlot, Rockville had a LOT of space when it came to housing. We had a backyard, and a two story house. A backyard!

Unlike Canterlot, the ponies were friendly. Unlike Canterlot, there was species diversity.

Unlike Canterlot, it had a strange habit of attracting and creating wild storms.

Powerful wild storms.

For instance, a year after we moved in, a powerful hurricane passed through and dropped a tree on our house, nearly killing me, as it landed right on top of my room. I was fine, but it was really scary. I remember that I woke up at the sound of a loud crash and saw the ceiling had bulged toward me and had cracks running through it. I sprinted out of my room and ran into Tranquility, who hugged me and told me what happened. It was something else. We stayed in the basement after that happened.

A few years after that, a tropical storm flooded an area near our house. I remember seeing our neighbor’s dog swim over their fence. The dog was fine. He was having a lot of fun.

But those were storms that we couldn’t do anything about at all, so we had to wait them out and hope it didn’t get too bad. But the one that started this whole thing wasn’t like that at all.

This one formed and came in before anyone could do anything about it. It was huge, unexpected, and it was bad. Real bad.

Y’know what, let me tell you about it...

Author's Note

And so this story begins! I've had this idea in my head for a while now and only just got around to writing it. I tried before, but it came out to be dark. Really, really dark, and I didn't want that. Sure, there are going to be some darker elements in this story, but I want it to be a little more lighthearted. This'll also be a bit of a challenge, as I myself am not tone-deaf and am working on obtaining perfect pitch. So this is basically my take on how I think it would feel.

So, about the update schedule on this. Basically, there isn't one, as I'm not exactly sure if I'll be able to sit down and write stuff on a schedule. I'm no ShortSkirtsAndExplosions, sadly.

So yeah! Tell me how you feel about this in the comments! Let me know if I made any typos, and I'll fix 'em.
