Silent Violin
Pushing Oneself
Load Full StoryI heard a whisper that touched deep inside my soul. Like some familiar melody. I sat down at a violin playing a soft melody. I hated playing it, but I always did what my parents said. My mother had taught me to always try something before you judge something, think the classic phrase you can't judge a book by its cover.
I sighed to myself as I continued to play. Gradually, I began to like it. When I came to the end of the melody, I finished the note perfectly. Suddenly, I heard clapping behind me.
*Clap Clap*
I looked around to find a small green haired girl smiling at me and clapping wildly. I blushed deeply.
"I hate playing it," I lied.
I casually picked up my books from the ground and she was still smiling.
"Well, I liked it." The girl said, "Hey, I'm new here, I was told that I could find the office from here."
"Oh." I whispered "You take a left at the next door."
"Thanks." The girl answered smiling broadly back at me. "My names Crystal."
"I'm Octavia." I answered smiling back.
Never before had I meet a girl my age, appreciate the loveliness of music, even if I didn't like the violin at times. I still loved music more then anything.
"Nice meeting you, Crystal. I said.
"Thank you for that song, it was very beautiful." She said.
I bowed my head slightly as a thank you. I stood in front of her class. In the audience were her teacher and fellow students. She was performing an assessment piece. She was to write a poem that displays her feelings about anything in the world.
She kept my attention on her for two years. She always smiled at me and was happy to be my friend. I was very talented, but I was shy when I first started out. I wanted to try writing a poem as well. I went it's another room and started to come up with one. A few hours passed and I finally got something. I breathed in when I finished the poem and sat down beside me. She looked at it and smiled.
"Hey Octavia, this is pretty good." She said.
"Nah!" I answered quietly, "It's not even finished."
I looked at the paper in her hand where a few verses were lying.
"You'll finish it one day." She said trying to reassure me.
You were the friend; you were the one I could confide in. Unfortunately, things became worst two years later when I was twelve-year-old, I sat in my room crying to myself. I had found out my mother was in the hospital. The doctors said it was serious and she would not recover. I could barely see her mother for the next three weeks, slowly day by day leaving this world behind. The image of my mother still stuck firmly in my face.
I had many memories of my mother and even though we didn't agree on everything, she was always there for me. A few days later, she passed away. I still missed her like crazy; I looked at a picture on my desk.
"Mom..." I whispered to the picture as she looked at her feet.
Why'd you have to go? I felt lost without her and while I didn't like playing the violin, she would still try to get me to play it. I regret fighting with her on that. I heard a quick knock on the door. I looked up and wiped my eyes as the door opened.
It was Crystal and she walked into the room carrying a handbag. I grimaced, as I knew it contained make up. She smiled as she sat down beside me.
"Octavia..." she whispered
"Hmm?" I asked trying to act brave.
"You don't have to hide this you know, you can always tell me anything you feel, crying doesn't make you any less of a person." She said assuring me.
I nodded. I knew what she was saying was true. You gave me strength that I could never find. Four years had passed and our friendship hadn't died down at all. High school had proved to be a bit rough in the beginning, but we managed to stick together. I walked into the senior common room and dropped her books on the table. Crystal and a friend of hers were sitting.
"Hey Octavia." She said happily as she brushed her short hair.
"Yo." Her friend said looking at me. "You OK?"
"Yes I'm fine," I groaned.
I threw herself onto a chair and flipped my math book open, and began to do some work.
"Octavia?" Crystal asked concerned.
"I'm fine!" I snapped pulling the sleeves of my shirt down to cover my arms.
I looked at myself and noticed I was shaking. Really bad too.
"Octavia," She said, grasping my wrist. "Why are you shaking?"
"Is it because of the anniversary of your mothers death, four years ago?" Her friend asked clueless.
"I'm just stressed alright!?" I answered pulling my wrist away from her. "I got all these assignments."
"Octavia, you need a break." Crystal ordered. "You are coming to this party tonight?"
"Crystal, I can't" I answered.
"You are coming alright," She answered putting her hands on her hips.
Knowing her, I wasn't arguing my way out if this one. I reluctantly agreed. That night, the music was blaring from the biggest open house party all year long. Music was blaring, drinks were readily available, and many people were getting into 'sticky' situations.
Crystal watched me with a bottle of lemonade in her hand. I smiled weakly to her insuring her I was fine.
"You having fun right?" She asked worriedly.
I nodded halfheartedly so she didn't have to worry.
"I will, just not at the moment." I said.
She grabbed me by the collar and pulled me to my feet. She was very strong when she wanted to be, and everyone just thought she was nothing but a weakling.
"Listen your mother passed away, that was four years ago, I know its hard" She said pushing me back to my seat.
I just looked up at her with shock. She's not usually like this.
"I know it was hard, and it still is, but do you think she'll want you to live your life like this?" She asked.
"No." I whispered
"Then have some fun. We're not going to live forever." She said, smiling.
She has no idea. What right does she have to tell me how to feel when she still has a mother? I always had to what I was told. I had no freedom, no fun, nothing. I got back up at her and look at her dead center.
"Crystal, you have no idea what its like." I snapped. "I never was able to have fun, I was always expected to be a proper little girl, never allowed to be myself, never allowed to go out and do what I wanted, it was either playing the violin or it was playing dolls! All I want to do is do what I want!"
"Well do it, you have the opportunity to do that, why don't you take it up?" She asked, "When you decide you want too, I'll be there with you."
And with that, she got her drink, and walked to the front of the house and walked outside, leaving me looking at the floor. I knew I shouldn't have yelled at her, but it was building up, I was unable to control it. The feeling of always being expected to be someone else was too much to bare.
A few minutes had passed and I had not moved from this spot. That was until I heard a car screeching and the sound of it crashing into what sounded like a tree. I ran outside to see what the commotion was about, I found the car crashed into a tree, and a body on the ground surrounded by many people. My heart skipped a beat; I was hoping to god it wasn't who I thought it was.
But it was confirmed when a man ran over to the body and looked at it. He looked at her with his face on; the person who had been hit was dead. I stood still for several minutes; I only jumped out of my daydream when a girl walked up to her.
"Excuse me did you know Crystal?" The girl asked.
I froze in place, fear rushing over me. My mind was screaming 'no it can't be'. But deep inside, I knew it was true.
One week later, I stood in front of the funeral service with a microphone in my hand. I had lost my mother four years earlier and now I had lost my best friend. I looked around; I spotted my own father who was upset. Crystal's parents. But none looked more hurt then her friend. For her infact had been driving the car that killed her, he was drunk.
When the coffin was placed in the ground, everyone dropped his or her roses onto the coffin. I stood there until everyone had left. I held a piece of paper in my hand that looked old.
"I'm so sorry" I whispered as tears escaped my eyes. "It's my fault this happened, if I had've just taken your advice, you would have been fine."
I smiled weakly.
"Remember that poem in the 8th grade, the one you said I'd finish, well you were right, I finished it."
I looked down at the grave.
"I know you can't see it or anything, but I never knew what it meant, until now, it was about you."
I placed the piece of paper on the bed of roses. Crying softly as I did so. I never ever got to tell her exactly what I felt for her.
"Thank you for being there for me, Crystal."
"Excuse me miss?" A voice called from behind me.
I turned to come face to face with a young women with short blue hair, and red eyes. She smiled at me. Such a serenity smile that suddenly made me feel all warm, I didn't feel that sad.
"Hey, I'm Octavia." I said weakly
"The names Vyial. I'm new to the school" She said. "Just wanted to say that you were wonderful on there, you must've really cared about her."
"I did." I answered.
Suddenly, I felt her presence all around and I knew that Crystal was the reason this young women had come to me. Thank you... I walked off with her and as I did, a gust of wind rocked passed me, knocking the paper out of my hands and landed on her grave.
Finally found what I been searching for
(All my life)
It was right before my eyes
Oh u are my angel
I know you'll always be there
You are my one and only angel
To finally found find what I could never see
(You were there for me)
Now there is no doubt that there will always be
An angel in my heart
There is an angel in my heart
Feels like I'm guided by a candle in the dark
It's taken all this time
To finally find out what I could never see
An angel in my heart
You were there for me
Now there is no doubt that there will always be
An angel in my heart
