Fallout: Equestria - Sunfury

War never changes. It's a mantra that has been repeated ad infinitum since conflict among the first fleeting tribes arose. It is also the biggest piece of bullshit that I have ever heard in my entire military career. Leave it to a philosopher to teach the so called ‘generals’ that bullshit. If there is one of them that is a clueless fuck it’s that Everglow bastard they made Colonel of my goddess damned regiment. It takes all the nuance out of something and make it entirely black and white. In the past eighteen years of my life I have dedicated myself to the war effort.
From my experience as a Captain I can confirm from experience that war is ever in flux and ever moving. What was five minutes ago is different now. Change in war is as common as taking a piss. Not a day goes by when the Ministry of Arcane Science field tests a new weapon, or when the enemy changes up their tactics forcing us to adapt or be wiped out.
A wise stallion from the east once said “Water shapes its course according to the nature of the ground over which is flows; the soldier works out his victory in relation to the foe whom he is facing. Therefore, just as water retains no constant shape, so in warfare there are no constant conditions.”
They are words that describe the true nature of warfare perfectly, capturing its ever changing state. The bureaucracy behind the war is rigid and unchanging. The ponies in high command have never stepped a hoof on the field of battle and are blind to the true nature of warfare.
"Regard your soldiers as your children, and they will follow you into the deepest valleys; look upon them as your own beloved sons, and they will stand by you even onto death." It's a saying that rings true enough i suppose. Perhaps not for all ponies but loyalty is certainly not earned by being distant and uncaring to them. Loyalty is earned by showing them sympathy, letting them retreat when needed and where possible. Not letting them die for nothing. Sometimes an inspiring speech or an appearance on the front line is what they need. Lead by example or don't lead at all.
I personally have two-hundred-and-fifty ponies under my personal command. Every day I send them out there from my command bunker. Every day I risk their lives and every day some of them come back in body bags. The horrifying truth about war is that it's a senseless loss of life.
That wise stallion once said “There are roads which must not be followed, armies which must not be attacked, towns which must not be besieged, positions which must not be contested, commands of the sovereign which must not be obeyed.”
The horrifying truth about all this is that before this war is over I will have been courtmartialed and shot for insubordination. Because if there is one thing those fuckers that call themselves generals don’t like is having their authority questioned by a pony who actually knows what the fuck he is doing. In the end let my successes in the defense of civilian populations, and the status of being, as of writing this, the captain with the least lives lost be what I am judged by in the end.
