"Rainbow Dash, will you be my marefriend?", Fluttershy said aloud to the mirror. "Oh, no. That wont work".
Fluttershy had been pondering ways to ask Rainbow out on a date for months now. She always had quite the interest in the awesome, speedster, but she had the issue of actually telling her. Or anypony for that matter. She promised herself she would tell rainbow dash about two months ago, but she never really got around to doing so.
"Rainbow, would you accept an invitation to come with me to Sweet Apple Archers for a picnic", Fluttershy continued to ponder in front of her mirror. "Now why would I come to some lame old tea party with you?", Fluttershy said to herself in a poor imitation of Rainbow Dash.
It was at this moment when a ringing came from her bedroom. A quick trot reviled her clock alarm had gone off. After a moment of thinking she realized the most terrible truth. SHE WAS LATE!
She zoomed off in the direction of the spa, where Rarity would likely be waiting. Going quick as a hedgehog, or at least a slightly crippled fox, she was racing through Ponyville. She made it to the spa in a little less than fifteen minutes(a new record!) to find Rarity sitting patiently.
"I am so sorry", Fluttershy said.
"Oh, I really don't mind darling. I'm sure you where just thinking about ways to sweep Rainbow off her hooves". Rarity said with a slight flutter of eyelashes.
Fluttershy had been reduced to the consistency of jelly, as she sank into the floor. Trying to burry herself under noting in particular.
"I. I meen. It wasn't. I wasn't trying."Fluttershy squeaked.
"Now now darling, I'm sure you where doing something much less time consuming. Though I think it would be best if we get to out spa, it will close on us if where not careful".
The pair walked into the spa, and without missing a beat, the two spa ponies escorted them to their places. After, that is, a brief mention by Rarity for 'the usual'.
"Isn't this just splined?", Rarity mused. The massage they where getting was quite extravagant, and very relaxing. "pardon" she asked after a few moments of no response.
"Oh, I didn't say anything".
"you seem a little quiet. Even quieter than usual. I didn't offend you with the remark about Rainbow, did I?
"No Rarity, it's just that I have a lot on my mind". Fluttershy said, letting out a little sigh. "Well, I actually have one thing occupying a lot of my mind."
"Is Angel giving you trouble again?"
"No. It's actually Rainbow dash" Fluttershy said, even more under her breath than usual.
"I am sorry, I didn't quite catch that".
"Sorry, I said it's actually Rainbow". Fluttershy said in a still barely audible voice.
"Oh what did that little prankster do this time". Rarity said, starting the transformation into the Hulk.
"Nothing, nothing. She didn't do anything." Fluttershy said, attempting to calm her friend.
"Are you sure, you can tell me if she did something."
"Can we go to the sauna before I say?"
"Oh, but of course. Confidential information like this must be taken with the utter most care." Rarity said, before waving a 'move on' gesture to the spa ponies.
The spa ponies made quite the show of flinging the various lotions and towels into seemingly random directions, only for them to be caught last second by trollies and carts. Once the things where wrapped up, Fluttershy and Rarity where taken to the next destination. The sauna room! Once the tradition of wrapping a towel round one self, and getting a bit of a steam on was completed they proceeded on with the plan of talking.
"Now, will you please Pinkie Pie Promise not to tell anypony." she added "If you don't mind" on the reflex of asking somepony of something.
"Cross my heart, and hope to fly, stick a cupcake in my eye." Rarity said, imitating the motions she had seen her friend do a million times.
"Thank you. Now... well" Fluttershy said, loosing the will to speak near the end. "I..."
"Oh come on now, you can tell me". Rarity said, in almost school-girl like excitement.
"I have a really big crush on Rainbow Dash!" Fluttershy said, somehow
... Rarity didn't know exactly what to think. I mean she had thought of the possibility, if only in the idle moments, just before sleep. Her first reaction was to go tell rainbow dash. But she quickly saw the error in her ways, after looking at Fluttershy. Tucked under her wings.
"Well, that's great. Right?" Rarity responded.
"Yes, it's just. I cant really figure out a way to tell her".
"I can offer some advice, if you want."
"Really?" Fluttershy said, going into a state of pinkie like happiness.
"Why yes. I like to think all those sappy romance novels told me a little", Rarity said smoothly. "first things first; you need to look stellar. Thankfully I think I have just the thing." Straightening up and putting on a serious face, like that of a drill Sargent, she continued with the advice giving session. "Next; you need to give a gift. We can go to Sugar Cube Corner, for a box of chocolates, or just some muffins. After that; you will need to ask her to go on a romantic date with you."
Fluttershy said her word of thanks, and when bolting to Carousel Boutique. She unlocked the door with the key left under a loose bit of wood, and ran inside to retrieve the dress Rarity had told her about. After doing so, she went home.
This was it. She was finally going to confess. After months of repressed feelings, this was going to do it. It actually scared her, but then again everything did. After a small amount of prep, she was ready.

knock knock knock
Rainbow's house was big, and Fluttershy wasn't really known for her raw physical strength, so the knock really only carried to the kitchen. She wasn't quite sure if she even heard her knocking. Maybe she could take this time to just-
"Hey flutters, how's it hangin'" Rainbow Dash said. Appearing seemingly out of the ether. Fluttershy made a high-pitch sound, similar to a hamster being held to tight. "Oh, sorry if I scared you"
"Oh, no. I'm fine" Fluttershy said meekly.
"What you doin' all the way out here?"
It was a good question. Her house had drifted a couple miles from anywhere particular, and it was all the way across town then some from Rainbow's house to hers. This was the point of no return, she realized. Even if she wanted to, she couldn't really just make up an excuse to leave. She also couldn't play it off as a play date of some sort, being this close to her in the cool air was all ready making her a mess.
"I was actually coming over to see if you wanted to have a picnic" Fluttershy said, slowly loosing her confidence. She wasn't sure if she wanted to go through with this. Her plan was to take Rainbow to her favorite little notch near the base of one of the hills off to the side of Ponyville. She had a picnic basket already set out, but now...
Now, Rainbow Dash was quite the athlete, so she listened to a lot of music on her old beat up iPod, and didn't really have the best of hearing. She was, needless to say, at a bit more of a disability than the majority of the others when it came to hearing Fluttershy.
"You're gunna have to speak up if you want me to hear you"
"Do you want to go on a date" Fluttershy said, immediately regretting her chose of words.
Rainbow for her part did a extremely good job of pretending not to hear, mostly because of the expression of horror on her friend's face.
"Still can't hear you" she commented nonchalantly.
Oh thank Celestia. "I was wondering if would come to a picnic with me. Me and Berry(the bear not the drunk) thought it would be a good idea to invite you. Seeing as we haven't seen one another in a while"
"Okay. I don't see why not".
Fluttershy nodded and then two flew off.
When they arrived Rainbow noticed the distinct lack of animals. With her comparatively acute vision she spied a little bit of paper next to the picnic basket.
"Fluttershy, where are your animal pals. Didn't you say Berry was going to join us".
Fluttershy just landed on the ground next to the basket and began reading the note. A cute little gasp came from her mouth, along with a look of understanding.
"It looks like Berry had some trouble with his wife catching the cold".
"Okay then". Rainbow dash wondered if Fluttershy actually wanted to go on a date with her, or if that was just a slip of the tong. Actually, she had a lot of thoughts going through her right now. Most of them annoyed that the others wouldn't shut up, and just let her enjoy a peaceful evening with her long-time friend.
They sat down and started fishing out various picnic-ey things from said basket. after a moment there was a mighty feast, consisting of lettuce and tomato sandwiches, some tuna and carp, a wine bottle plus two glasses, a small selection of spices, and a half dozen muffins. Banana muffins. The fact fish and wine where amongst the things conformed to dash this was a date, or at the very least was initially intended to be one.
"Soooooooo... how's it been going Fluttershy?" Rainbow asked from across the classic red and white checkered design of the picnic blanket.
"Oh, pretty well. The animals have been doing just fine". Fluttershy responded, Thinking of just how awful this idea was in the first place.
"Your dress looks really nice. You get Rarity to make you one?"
"No.. well. Kinda, I got it from Rarity, but she didn't make this one just for me.
"Oh, cool". Rainbow dash said taking a bite of a sandwich. Her face instantly becoming one of pure bliss. "WOW!" was really all she could say.
"Is it good?" questioned Fluttershy.
"Yea Flutters, its amazing!" Rainbow Dash said, slowly starting to think this was a dream. An absolutely wonderful picnic, with the most amazing mare in all of Equestria, AND some amazing food!
Fluttershy on the other hand, was having less of a good time. Her mind was a battleground of emotions. Fear, anxiety, and happiness desperately clawing their way into her mind.
"Umm, you okay?... Fluttershy..." She was starting to get worried, as it wasn't like Fluttershy to just zone out like this. Well, desperate times call for desperate measures. She got right in fluttershy's face and screamed "FLUTTERSHY!" She was expecting her to bolt to the top of the nearest tree at worst. What she hadn't expected was Fluttershy, filed with the determination and drive of somepony who hadn't thought something out properly, leaned forward into Rainbow, and kissed her.
The kiss itself didn't last more than a second, but that was all the time Fluttershy needed to realize her grievous mistake.
"I'msoosorryIwasntthinkingaboutwhatIwasdoingpleaseforgiveme!!" Fluttersht started bawling her little heart out. What had she done. She couldn't believe her self. Out of all the ways she could have taken the situation, this was the most foal-like. Although, it seemed to work.
Rainbow Dash was most certainly no expert psychologist. Or for that matter Sternberg psychology, but she was familiar with the feeling of somepony didn't know how to say, "I love you".
Fluttershy stopped crying immediately. She couldn't believe her ears. She what now.
"I-I mean I like. I cant jump to conclusions. I really like you".
"You what..." Fluttershy replied in a weak tone with a snotty sniff.
Rainbow dash completely ignored all the snot, and wetness of Fluttershy's face and lunged in for another kiss. This one lasted much longer, and when they broke. All fell, it was just them. With beautiful hills and mountains all round. On the most gorgeous summer day. Not a cloud in the sky. Looking into each others eyes.

Boom! Done! Story complete. Achievement got 'did a thing'.
