"Gilda, how did you meet Greta?" Pinkie asked, curiosity taking over.
Greta was sitting down on the couch.
"If I remember correctly, I met her during freshmen year, right Gilda?" She asks, with a smile on her face.
I nodded softly as she yawned. "It's getting late," she said, getting up from the seat. "I gotta go. See ya," she adds before walking out the door.
Pinkie also yawned but didn't leave.
"Oh! I wanna hear all abo-"
As she asked that, her phone rang. She answers it. After she talked for some time, she hung up, appearing sad.
"Aw... And I was just about to get good. Well, I have to go. Night Gilda," she said as she got up and was walking away.
I nodded in return as she walks to the door and close it behind her. I looked up at the clock and saw that it was pretty late. I got up and went to my room. I laid down on my bed and sighed as I rolled on my side.
"At school, huh?" I asked myself.
I sit up and stares at the ceiling. It wasn't at school when we had met. It was way before that. I closes my eyes as the memories flood my mind.
*flashback*
I was walked through the streets of the city. People would glance at me and turn away. I was feared. Both in and out of school and I didn't like it. I secretly wished there could have at least one person not scared of me.
I was walking silently lonely one day. Suddenly, I heard small cries not to far from where I was.
"Is someone crying?" I asked myself, as I walked to the location.
In a small dark alleyway, I found a small girl. She had brown hair and a beanie on top. She was wearing a small green shirt with red stripes on it and little khaki shorts to match. The small girl looked like she was at the age of three. She looked up and me I saw her warm green eyes but some red because of her crying. I walked closer and she whimpered.
I sighed and turned to leave. It seems even she's scared of me... Or so I thought. I felt like I was just surrounded in darkness that no light could enter. Just as I was about to leave, I felt a tug on my shirt.
I turned and saw her. She was looking at me with pleading eyes. She was sucking her thumb as her other hand was holding onto my shirt. And just like that… I felt a small ray of light shine through my life of darkness.
The girl let go and looked at the ground, clearly she was scared and confused. I chuckled a little and grabbed her. She was surprised but calmed down as I put her on my shoulders.
"My name is Gilda," I said. "And yours?"
She was playing with my hair when she answered.
"I'm Greta."
"So are you lost?" I asked.
She gasped as I said that.
"Yeah. I was trying to go back home but I guess I got lost," she said, laughing nervously.
"So you want me to take you home?" I asked.
She nodded.
"Then, let's go," I said as I started walking.
I gently grabbed her hand and sniffs it. She giggled as I did that.
"It tickles," she laughed.
I sniffed the air and soon I began getting a weak trace of her home scent. I grabbed her and set her down on the floor.
I then started walking. As we walked, my other hand was just dangling there. I saw her reaching for it and slipped her hand into mine. I looked down and smiled a bit. I sighed as I walks by people looking at me and then at her.
"Is she crazy?", one whispered. "She'll hurt her or worse", another replied.
I sent glares at them. They looked away and ran backed off. She giggled.
"Scaredy Cats", she laughed and pointed at them.
"Your not afraid of me?" I asked as I looked down at her.
She shakes her head and smiles.
"I will never be scared of you!", she says as she glomps me.
I tensed up but then hugs her in return.
"Come on, let's get you home", I said as she grabbed my hand.
After a few more miles, I finally brought her back to her house.
"Greta!", a voice cried out.
I saw a young woman with wavy brown hair and bright sapphire eyes. She glomped Greta into a hug.
"Greta! Don't ever leave my side again!" she cries on her daughter's hair.
She chuckled a litttle.
"It's okay. Gilda brought me here," she said.
Her mother looks up and sees me, soaked from the rain and with my hair blocking my sight.
'She's probably scared of me as well. It's best I go before sh-'
"Thank you," she said, interrupting my thoughts
I was taken back by her response. It took me a few seconds before I was able to act. I nodded my head in return. Then she does the unexpected. She pulls me in and hugs me despite being soaked.
"You are a lifesaver. Thank you," she said as she pressed me against her chest. I had turned red. Not out of embarrassment but... It was the first time I've been thanked for something. No anger. No staring. Just kindness, something I've missed for sometime. It was then I noticed Greta was trying to stop her mother.
"Mom, you're going to suffocate her!", she shouts.
Her mother laughs nervously as she lets go of me.
"Sorry. By the way, my name is Scarlet," she says, smiling like nothing had happened.
I nodded and takes a deep breath.
"Come join us for dinner," she says as she starts walking in.
At first, I was reluctant to accept but when Greta looked at me with her sad eyes, I realized saying no would break her heart. I nodded and Greta laughed as she grabs my hand and drags me inside. Inside, we ate and her mother offers me to sleep the night there.
"Please!" Greta begged.
She was already in her pajamas and she was asking me to stay. Her mother laughed.
"You should at least for one night,"
She smiled and yawned as she walks to her room. I looked at Greta and I smiled a genuine smile and she leads me to her room.
I sit down on her bed and she lies next to me.
"Goodnight," she whispers as she falls asleep.
I strokes her hair and looked out the window. I looked down at my hands. On my hand, was something I didn't recognize. It appeared to be a picture, showing me protecting her from the rain. I sighed and for up without disturbing her. I walked out of her room and walked to the front door. Before I opened the door, I was stopped by a voice.
"Leaving already?" Scarlet asked.
I turned to look at her and sighed.
"I... have other things to do," I lied.
She walks towards me and smiled.
"Greta has never been attached to a person, in such a short time," she starts. "Gilda," she continued but I covered her eyes with my hand.
"I'm sorry. its better if you had never met me," I said.
She pushed my hand away.
"Don't be," she said as she walks away to her room.
I sighed and reached for the door when I think about Greta and the kindness she handed me. I should at least say goodbye before leaving. I turned around and went to her room. I hovered over her and I felt a tear escape from my eye. Greta opened her eyes.
"Gilda?" she asked half awake.
I smiled and covered her face with my hand.
"Goodbye, Greta," I said holding back a tear.
I heard a light gasp from her as I said that but before she could speak, I continued.
"Thank you for your kindness. It will not be forgotten," I said as I hugged her. After that, I left the home and walked into the shadows.
*End of Flashback*
I opened my eyes and smiled to myself. She was the first person to ever see past my dark nature. Even though she doesn't remember. It's hard to believe we still meet and remembers the kindness I offered. In a way, I'm glad but... It's not often I'm returned with kindness with others. Even to this day, I'm still meet with rude remarks and glares at every turn. Still, I guess there's at least one person who sees me and stays. I guess it shows that not everyone hates me even though she's unaware of what I was as a kid. One question crossed my mind... Why did she lie about how we meet? Maybe it was because she was trying to be nice? Or maybe it was because she simply forgot. Regardless, it doesn't change how things happened. I close my eyes and let sleep take over.
