Stay Away from the Windows
It was a cold winter night and the mayor had recently alerted everyone that there were timberwolves outside of Ponyville. Derpy and her daughter were warm in front of the fireplace. Howling came from outside and the sound of soft, new and old, hard wood was hitting the frozen ground. A sound of a broken window or bottle. Dinky hid under the covers, trembling and Derpy came closer, holding her tight.
"It's OK, Dinky, they can't see us; just stay away from the windows. How about you go play in your room?" said her Mother, attempting to comfort her. She walked into her room and played a game of Jenga alone. She was so scared that it was difficult to play without knocking it over on the first try from shaking. She saw a dark shadow from outside and looked through the window. She looked and saw the wolf looking right back at her. She ran toward her mother and jumped back onto her.
"Why do the always come here?" she asked, tears coming from her eyes. Her mother had no idea what to say. The smell of sulfur filled the air and the scratching and howling continued. Unlike normally at six when everypony was at the bar or talking with friends after work. All of the doors were shut and locked and the windows were covered. All of the lights were shut off and the candles were blown out. The town was desolate and barren. The wolves had lost interest in the town and were about to move on until...
A loud bang and the door and barking. They were being hunted; they were simply prey. Nothing less; nothing more. Dinky screamed and struggled back under the blankets and they simply heard down the hall: ping, ping, ping. One of them had got inside and the couch was wet around Dinky's face with tears. Derpy covered Dinky's mouth. "Hush now, you're OK," But Derpy herself didn't believe that. She just needed quiet so that she and her daughter would have a slim chance. She thought: "Maybe they'll leave, maybe it's a neighbor, maybe if we're quiet a group will get rid of it," But no; Growling and snarling came from down the hall and then... pit pat, pit pat. Growling came from behind the couch, it could smell them, then Derpy grabbed her empty mug and threw it across the room, the wolves ran to the sound. It echoed through the whole house.
Derpy carried Dinky through the house. The wolves smelled them once again and ran. They ran faster than anypony knew they could. She threw Dinky onto the bed and held her tight. Pit, Pat, pit, pat. Their scent was easy to detect. They were like rabbits in a field
"Dinky, don't be scared,"
"Mom... MOM!?!?!?"
Then one grabbed Derpy by the leg, pulling her into the hall. Dinky was too scared to look, she hid in her closet and hoped it would be OK for her. She wondered if she'd ever get out. She wondered if she'd ever see the warm sunlight on her fur again. At that moment she thought about life without her mother. The only friend she had ever had. She had never had friends in school or home, she was too shy. Derpy was all she knew and that ate at her mind and soul. It worked away at her psyche and made her know: life is difficult. Two more came into her room. He was scared, trying not to make noise. She felt her warm tears grow cold and dry. She was pressed up against the back and she was scared of one thing no one would save her, no one could save her. And the world was growing colder and darker. The room was blurry with her tears. And she was fearful. She wanted to run, but couldn't. She found a small blade and tried as hard as she could to levitate it and get a good grip on it, but then she heard the deafening roar.
"I love you, mom," Then another loud yell from outside led them to the other, more desirable place.
"Dinky, find mommy's phone,"
"A-are they gone?" Dinky asked, collapsing to the floor and crying. She was relieved and at the same time worried. She didn't know what had happened to her mother and at the same time was glad that those monsters, those creatures were gone. She slowly and quietly opened the door and to her mother. She was bleeding out.
"Dinky, just get the phone,"
"No, mom, you'll die,"
"Dinky It's OK,"
"No, mom... mom!? Mom, please wake up, I need you, please, mom, please, PLEASE..." Dinky was alone. She was alone in the world, in life, and in her soul. She had never been so crushed. She never felt the loss of death. All she felt was pain. She was scared and this time, truly alone. And she stayed there with her face planted on her mother's cold, lifeless corpse until eventually: there was light coming through the clouds and the town was moving again.
She remembered always being told: "if timberwolves ever come, stay away from the windows". The thing that saddened her the most was the one who caused them to break into her home. It was her fault and she wished that she had died too.
"Hey, Sweetie?" asked Scootaloo, folding her scooter and putting it into her bag.
"What?"
"Where's Dinky? We were gonna meet up for the plan we made. Weren't we?"
"Yeah, where is she?" asked Apple Bloom. They went to her house, assuming she had just not got out of bed and saw her and her mother dead on the floor with a note on the floor and a knife right next to Dinky.
