During the age of ash, ponies moved in great herds and the world was ruled by dragons. Ancient, titanic beings, covered in grey scales, wielding fire with their maws and taking to the air with their wings.

They dominated the skies, the lands and the ocean. They burned ground beneath them. And with their jaws they ate what they killed.
The lands were their hunting grounds and everything roaming was prey.

Ponies were small, vulnerable yet fertile creatures. Running along the fields and eating the grass on the ground. Always keeping an eye towards the sky.

But during a thunderous night, a mare named Epona gave birth to twin sisters. Both having feathery wings on their backs and twisted horns on their heads. One of them was snow white with a mane of golden curls. The other was blue like the evening sea with a mane dark like the midnight sky, sparkling with little stars.

The white one took the name Celestia. Alicorn of the sun and the mother of unicorns and Pegasus.

The blue one took the name Luna. Alicorn of the moon and the guardian of dreams.

Hundreds of moons and thousands of suns passed as the sisters roamed the land. Together they learned and grew.

They shared the skies with the dragons, watching the world below. Watching them hunt and eat their kin. They decided to act.

Celestia called on her two first born.

Sombra, the first unicorn and his crystal Knights.

Valkyrie, the first Pegasus and her daughters of Calamity.

Both of them knelt before their mother, swearing allegiance.

Celestia looked at the two of them. Sombra with his jet black mane and grey fur. His green pupils glowed like a pair of burning cinders in his eyes. A sharp pointing, crimson horn grew out of his forehead. Valkyrie with her ashen white mane and ice blue coat. She looked at her mother with crimson eyes. Though more than fully grown and outlived both of their fathers they still seemed like mere children to her, her blood flowed through their veins. She accepted their loyalty with a smile.

With Celestia´s descendant at their side, the sisters challenged the dragons.

In the sky, Celestia drew forth a black cloud, roaring with thunder.

Valkyrie and her daughters pulled crackling lightning bolts from the cloud to tear the scales of their hides.

On the ground, Luna unleashed a smog of ice and wind, trapping the dragons inside white crystals.

Sombra and his knights charged and shattered them.

Celestia and Luna stood side by side. The landscape was transformed. A green and vibrant land, now cold and parched, sparkling with the shattered remains of the dragons. They looked over their defeated foe and both knew that the age of ash was at an end.

Thus began the age of moon and sun. An age where sky was clear but for the clouds and the sun, where night sky was black aside from the ice blue moon and the sparkling stars, and towns and villages grew from the ground like flowers in spring.

But now the sun is fading and with each passing full moon, the nights grow ever longer and colder. Unnatural creatures wander the earth during these nights. Everypony born on a night of the full moon enter the world twisted and malformed.
