“One’s finally hatching.” A proud green dragon, just about the size of a barn, puffed out his spikes and tried to hide his excitement. “Oh here it comes...It’s having trouble, maybe if I just….”
His mate, a lovely velvet female gave him a smart nip on the nose. She was a bit older, as well as a bit wiser when it came to hatchlings. “They break out with the help of their wings. If you help them out their wings won’t develop.”
“But.” The male slouched dramatically and eyed the eggs. He didn’t have a good argument. “What if one gets stuck?”
There was an amused chuckle from the older female. She had had a few eggs before this one. “They don’t get ‘stuck’. Mine don’t anyways. Now sit down.” Dumb male didn’t know what he was doing. “Lets take a nap, when we wake our little scale will be here.”
“Well alright.” The barn sized male laid his head on the female’s flank and wrapped his tail around her back. She was a bit bigger than him, but then again she had had more time to gather things to her hoard with her age. “What would you like to name him Velvet?”
But she seemed to already be asleep. So he closed his eyes with a sigh and allowed himself to begin to drift off...when he opened his eyes, a little baby dragon would be there.
Velvet waited for the male to sleep. He was a thick-sleeper, just as all the males she chose tended to be. Slipping away carefully, the female dragon allowed his head to slowly slip onto her nest. The egg between them went up into her jaws as the female dragon slipped out of the cave. It had happened once or twice that her mates ate their offspring before they had a chance to grow.
The egg squirmed, it would probably take a few days, but it could also be hatching soon. Into her paw it went then, eggshells were not very tasty. “Do not worry little one.” She cooed after taking off into the air. “I have prepared us a place where no one would expect us.”
Where would no one expect a dragon? Near ponies of course. Weak little ponies who would offer no resistance to her as she took care of a baby until it was ready to meet its goof of a father.
That was the plan at least, until an unexplainable force yanked her to a dead stop directly in the air. Out of her hand the egg went flying! So small that it looked like a pebble compared to her!
Velvet roared furiously!! Fighting whatever magic held her.
“Halt ye dragon!” The voice of a female pony called from below.
“Who dares?” Fire rained down upon them, she growled as a shield protected their ignorant flanks. This piece of meat was a strange one. A long legged pony with shiny hair. Ah, the horn produced the magic that held her? It would come off then, the ponie's wings with it. Did ponies come with both horns and wings? No matter, “Release me foolish horse, you’ll be my next meal!”
“Princess.” Another winged one was next to her. “It has no reason.”
“Perhaps you are right...Why do you come here?”
Who was this four legged equine? “I’ll burn your entire village.” The dragon released more fire, furious that they had caused her to drop her egg. She HAD to burn the forest at least, or else she’d never find it.
Celestia had been informed of this dragon for a few weeks now. It was large and ornery, unable to listen. Clearly dangerous. “Be gone with you.” Closing her eyes, she generated a whopping ton of magic and teleported the dragon far away. It was lucky to have survived the experience.
Gah, but now she needed to rest. “Go inform madam mayor that there is no longer any danger to Ponyville.”
The guard bowed his head before flying to do his duty. Now….She turned only to stop at the sight of something wiggling on the ground. A living rock? No, clearly it was an egg.
“Guard.” Another approached as the alicorn picked the thing off the ground.
“You wish me to destroy it princess?”
“No...Find me an expert on dragons.” There was a pause of consideration. “I think….It’s stuck.”
