Repeat: The First Sighting
2: Sign Up
Previous ChapterIt took much longer than they had expected.
The sign up due date wasn't until next Wednesday, and it was currently Thursday.
"I thought we'd go straight away.." Starry grumbled, picking at her hotdogs.
"Me too," Sweeper admitted. "I'm not planning ahead, though, I never plan ahead."
After an intoxicating week, the pair of roommates walked to Silver Oak Library, jumping across mud puddles playfully. An hail of rain had just passed, which Starry predicted was a bad omen for signing up for an experiment. Sweeper tormented her on manners. As the two peeked in the library, they grinned, and walked in with brimming confidence.
Twilight Sparkle was not ready. Her newest experiment was to try an small volt of electricity, which would go into an magic book Princess Celestia and Luna had made that contained whatever happened in the world. Evidently, it would zap into their brains, allowing the volunteer to see either the past or future. If enough hope and self-esteem, predicted Luna, they would see their best or worst memory. Hopefully it wouldn't go wrong.
After proposing the experiment to Celestia and Luna, she hadn't expected an vile look from Celestia, as if she didn't like this thing. Luna, however, was ecstatic. She'd convinced Princess Celestia to allow Twilight, but on the condition it wouldn't be one of her friends.
"We can't lose one of the Elements - you are too valuable," she'd said.
"Sister.." Luna grumped. "We get it! Now, go along, Twilight!"
Twilight had tested it eagerly on rabbits, but rabbits couldn't tell her what they were seeing, so she had to use mares and stallions. (Fillies and colts? NOPE.)
She'd proclaimed it last Thursday's paper, and so far people were happy and excited. Declaring Wednesday the day she would accept sign ups, she waited quietly. So far Lucky Lucy and Silver Spirit had signed up for the first pair, (Volunteers were pairs) The second was Shuffle Step and Mystic Star. The third, she saw, was Starry Night and Cloud Sweeper. She'd always noticed Sweeper's small crush on her, and Starry Night's confusing hatred of her. Rarity and Apple Jack had tried to change her opinion, but the unicorn was unmovable. I wonder why she's signed up if she hates me so much,
"Sparkle," Starry greeted as she walked in, stone-faced. Sweeper grinned at Twilight. "We've come to sign up!" Twilight took off her glasses. Recently, her vision had become a bit weak, and petitioned by her friends, she agreed to get an 5-grade one. She could see quite clearly with it, surprisingly.
"Well, alright!" Twilight said nervously. "Go on.."
She watched as the two scribbled their names and signatures on the clipboard, racing to see who would finish first. Starry won the contest. She stood up straight, her horn shining as though she wished to pierce Twilight with it. Twilight bit her lip. "You know what, Starry Night," she mumbled. Starry's eyebrow raised, confused.
"Why don't we take a walk before Friday?" Twilight offered. Starry Night shrugged.
"Alright. Why do you insist?"
"Insist?!" Twilight accidentally roared.
Starry's eyes widened, and Sweeper looked up in surprise.
"Um, I mean.." Twilight sighed. "Its that you're always so cold to me, Starry Night."
Starry Night nodded, not looking at her. Twilight noticed her horn wasn't glinting anymore.
She beamed. "So will you come?"
Starry Night turned to her with an hopeful expression on her face. "Of course, Twilight,"
Twilight watched as Sweeper hopped up and down, holding his arm over Starry's saddlespot. Twilight smiled up at them.
Maybe my life isn't over yet.
