Vinyl Scratch is staying at Octavia's grandmother's house, along with the rest of Octavia's family, for the holidays. She's less than welcomed by the snooty, proper family, until Hearth's Warming gifts are exchanged and Vinyl reveals that she's managed to earn Octavia a chance at joining the Canterlot Royal Orchestra #3. Octavia is thrilled by the gift, but realizes a little late in the audition process that sacrifices will have to be made in order for her dream to come true. It isn't until she is reminded of a memory from her fillyhood that Octavia truly realizes the astounding beauty of the concept behind a patchwork quilt.
