“Moony, do you think Princess Celestia ever looks at the night sky and tries to find as many constellations as she can?” Twi asked as the three of us looked into the night sky.
“I don’t know.” I shrug. “What do you think Shine?”
“I think we should head to bed.” Shine yawns rather loudly. “And my name is Shining Armor.”
“Go ahead, I’m nocturnal. I can’t sleep for another three hours anyway.” I wave dismissively with my hoof. “As for your question Twi, just ask Celestia.”
“Nopony is nocturnal Moonlight.” Shine shakes his head. “Go to sleep, I’ve seen how much you hate yourself in the morning.”
“Well excuse me for having insomnia then.” I snort. I hear soft breathing and check to see that Twi fell asleep. I light up my horn along with Shine to carry her to her bed.
“You really should talk to a doctor about that Moonlight.” I know he really means therapist.
“You know how much those pills affect our magic Shine. I don’t want to fail any of the tests Lesty gives me.” I scratch the back of my neck.
“Shining Armor. And please don’t give our ruler a pet name, it’s demeaning.” He looks like he bit into a lemon. “Moonlight, being able to sleep? Being able to not bring a room’s mood down because your affliction acts up again? I think it’s worth losing a few points.”
“I’m barely hanging on as it is Shine. We both know she only took me in because I was Twi’s only friend. Not because I’m a prodigy.” I snort. “You know how many times I had to repeat the basic magic exam?”
“The Princess wouldn’t abandon you. She considers you her student.” Shine shakes his head. “Shining Armor.” He adds as an afterthought.
“No, she considers Twilight bucking Sparkle her pupil. Moonlight Caritas is just there for emotional support. And good thing too, his specialty is empathy magic. Did you know that Celestia didn’t even bother asking if I was okay with heading off to Ponyville with Twi?” I sneer.
“Are you okay with it?” He looks at me in a rather deadpan manner.
“Of course, she’s my best bucking friend. I would fight by her side with nothing but a rolled up bath towel if I had to.”
“Then maybe that’s why she didn’t ask. Maybe she didn’t see the point to it.” He places a hoof on my right shoulder.
“Maybe.” I shake him off. “Thanks for spending time with us. I know you get busy with your newfound Captainhood.”
“You’re my best friend too Moonlight. And I HAVE fought with nothing but a bath towel by your side.”
“I knew I was plagiarizing the idea from somewhere.” I stick my tongue out at him. “Go to sleep Shine. I’ll see you in the morning.
He shakes his head and walks off, leaving me to my thoughts. If only these ponies had a laptop and internet. Wait, that’s a strange thought, why would I want a spinning top and a fishing net? A headache clamps down on me, like someone push a needle into my brain. Those words sound so familiar, why though? I shake my head and walk up to Spike. Thank Faust that dragons only need half the hours ponies do to sleep.
“Need something Caritas?” He files away books without look back at me. “The usual or something else?”
“The usual. I need to confirm that I’m accompanying Twi to Ponyville. Someone has to make sure she doesn’t have another nuclear meltdown.” I chuckle.
“Nuclear? Man, you have the weirdest sayings Caritas. Sit tight, I’ll have your parchment and paper ready.” He nods as he files away the last of books. With a sigh of relief, he heads off to Twi’s room.
I hum a little melody to myself. A little ditty that I came up with for the violin. Instead of common time, it’d be in five-four time. Hmm, hmm, hmmhmmhmm. Wish I knew someone who played the piano. It’d be a great piece to play together. I hope.
Someone clears their throat.
“Hmm?” My head snaps toward the sound. Spike’s holding out parchment and a quill designed for unicorns like me. “Oh, thanks Spike. You excited for Ponyville?”
Spike stares at me for a few seconds. “Not really. Canterlot is my home.” With that said, he walks back into his and Twi’s room. Still not one to talk to me. I know dragons are wary of strangers, but I’ve known the kid for most of his life. Oh well. I return to the guest room on the second floor and begin writing my letter.
Dear Princess Celestia… I breathe in. Too stuffy. Scratch it out. Yo Lesty, I was wondering if you’d be alright with my accompanying Twi to her super incredibly important job in Ponyville. You know the same job that entails her ignoring the warning signs of Nightmare bucking Moon.
Yup, still salty about that one. I dab the quill in more ink.
But who am I to question the bucking Sun Goddess of all Equestria. Praise the Sun indeed. Also, my dreams still show me a creature named Dylan. I’m past the point of “It’s just a nightmare” and have reached the point of “This is a premonition of the future.” If you would only tell me what this creature represents, I’d sleep easier at night. Regardless, Twi’s doing great with magic. Wish I had a cutie mark that let me cheat my way through everything. Yes, I’m jealous. Still, she needs better friends than me, Sir Broods A Lot. Heh. Next time we meet in person, I’ll buy you a cake for putting up with my word vomit. I’ll even get your favorite. Sincerely, your undeserving student.
I put the quill down and check for grammar errors. Last time I sent her a letter with grammar inconsistencies, she sent it back with red marks and revisions. I roll up the parchment and light up my horn. With a poof, the letter disappears.
I should sleep, long day tomorrow.
Author's Note
This idea wouldn't leave my head. I wanted to see what would happen if I created a HiE story if the "human" in question didn't remember his life as a human. Thus this came to be. Let me know if there's something I can improve.
