Author's Note: The prologue takes place about 20 years before the Nightmare Moon incident, so Twilight is at Princess Celestia's School For Gifted Unicorns. Celestia's story takes place about 100 years before Luna became Nightmare Moon.

Reign of Chaos: Prologue

Princess Celestia was busy journaling in her private quarters. She often found it quite relaxing to record her thoughts at the end of each day; it helped her sort through the business of ruling an entire kingdom AND a magic school for unicorn fillies and colts.
Suddenly, a knock on the door interrupted the sun princess' reflections.
"Who is it?" sighed the princess.
"One of your students from the magic school is here to see you, ma'am. She says she has a private appointment with you," replied the guard who was stationed outside her door.
Celestia gasped, how could she have forgotten that tonight was her weekly meeting with her star pupil, Twilight Sparkle? Shoving aside her journal, Celestia instructed the guard to let Twilight enter. The purple filly walked through the door, shutting it quietly behind her.
"Sorry to bother you, Princess, I don't mean to interrupt anything important..."
Celestia smiled. "Of course not, Twilight! I always have time for my most outstanding student." Celestia was always amused by how uptight Twilight was, she often thought the unicorn needed to make some friends and unwind.
Relaxing slightly, Twilight asked, "So what will our magic lesson be this week, Princess?" Although Twilight was always happy to be near Celestia, she always tried to maintain a level of formality with the princess.
"Actually, Twilight, I think tonight you should take a break from learning spells. I have a story I want to share with you that I think you will like."
Unable to hide her delight at listening to another of the princess' stories, Twilight gleefully asked, "What story do you have, Princess? Is it the one about how you helped that group of apple farmers?"
"No, Twilight," laughed the princess, "Tonight, I have an entirely new story you haven't heard before."
"What is it?" asked the anxious filly.
"Tonight, I am going to tell you how my sister and I defeated a powerful enemy using the Elements of Harmony."
"Elements of what?"
"The Elements of Harmony, Twilight. I'll explain what they are during the story. Now, why don't we go somewhere more comfortable?" asked Celestia, motioning toward the couch next to the fireplace.
After settling in and getting comfortable, Celestia began to tell Twilight a tale of days long gone by...
