{Flashback}
One day, in the land of Equestria, two princesses ruled over the land.
Princess Luna, the youngest sister, rose the moon at night. Creating sunset.
Princess Celestia, her older sister, rose the sun again in the morning. Creating sunrise.
Overall, the two had an incredible reign.
Until one fateful day.
One morning, Luna woke up with a strange feeling. It was a feeling she had once known incredibly well. In fact, so well that she had befriended it.
Jealousy.
She had suddenly became incredibly envious of her older sister. Luna soon took matters into her own hands.
Much to her surprise, she was able to pull it off.
Luna spent days on end studying an ageing spell to put on herself.
After months and months of studying, she was finally able to master it.
She pinched her sister with a needle of general anaesthetic to make sure she stayed out during the experiment.
Luna tied her sister up and waited patiently until she awoke.
After a few hours of preparing, Celestia finally woke up. Allowing the experiment to begin.
She started taunting her sister, making her question what reality she had woken into.
She had never known an attitude such as this from her beloved sister since her 'Nightmare Moon' phase, but she never knew that monster could return so suddenly.
Little did she know, Nightmare Moon had been back for months now.
So long, in fact, that Luna had formed an incredibly complicated plan to take Equestria by storm.
After a rather large introduction to Luna's reign, she suddenly lit the room with her horn, showing Celestia the documents and highlighted pages she'd hung all over her room and studied for months.
Celestia's horn was cased in a large box that Luna had created. With this kind of material, the magic she was trying to use could not break through.
With a short, sharp wave of Luna's horn, Celestia fell numb and was knocked unconscious.
When she woke, she was met with a nasty surprise.
By looking in the mirror, she could see clearly what had happened to her.
She was younger by at least three thousand years. Celestia looked shorter, skinnier, but most importantly,
Weaker.
She knew deep down that this was what Luna had wanted, but she refused to accept it.
After a little while, the whole of Equestria had been transformed from its once beautiful land, to a dark, dismal waste of space.
Truth is, not many ponies had died in this war. However, many sides were taken.
You could not be on both sides. You were either Celestial or Lunatic. If you refused to take a side, you were captured and held hostage in the old princesses' castle by Nightmare Moon herself.
It was always so empty because families, friends and partners had been separated by the war. No one saw much use of leaving the house and venturing the dark streets any longer.
Except for once group.
{Present Time}
"Scootaloo! Are you in there?" Asked a very familiar high voice. "Yeah. Come in.." Scootaloo was laying down on her bed in the darkest corner of her room, right where she liked it.
"Where's Rarity? She normally comes with you incase something happens.." Scootaloo rolled her eyes. Yet, she stayed facing the wall so that Sweetie Belle couldn't see her snarl. "She's working.." Scootaloo instantly turned to face her and shot her a concerned look as Sweetie reached for the lights, hitting the switch. "I know.. she said that she has to work just incase some customers do come. I know they won't.."
"She cares too much about you. My parents were never like that when they were around." Scootaloo threw an obviously disgusted look at her surroundings as her eyes adjusted to the new light. "She's my sister. Plus, in times like this, I'm surprised no one is protecting you like you're a little kid.."
Scootaloo slammed her fist into the wall, making Sweetie Belle shudder. "I do not need protecting! I've been by myself for most of my damned life, do you think I need protecting now?" Sweetie knew it was a rhetorical question, so she didn't care to answer. She instead walked over and sat next to Scootaloo, staring at her purple eyes through her shaggy hair; a mixture of blue and her natural shade of magenta.
"Besides, I know how to defend myself. Isolation will do this to ya. Thinkin' you're the world. You get me?" Sweetie Belle nodded silently. The two sat in silence for a while until Scootaloo laid flat onto her back. Sweetie felt this was the best time to break the news.
"The war is starting soon. Twilight is in charge of Celestia's army and Cadence is in charge of Luna's. it will commence soon and I was told to tell you personally by Rarity. That's another reason she isn't here. We weren't sure how you'd take it.."
Scoots froze and stared deeply into the details and dents of her ceiling as she tried to process the information. "W-What? But.. but they said there wasn't gonna be a war! Well, if there was, it would be a long time from now! That's what Rainbow Dash told me!" She swung back up and started panicking. "We're screwed, Sweetie! We're screwed!" She suddenly found it very hard to breathe and fell to the floor, gasping for air.
"I-I can't breathe, S-Sweetie!" She stopped rocking and stayed completely still, yet still gasped. "What's going on?" Sweetie asked with great concern, lifting Scoots with some of her newly found magic. Her green aura lifted Scootaloo into the air and she tried to calm her, resting her back onto her bed and stroking her messy hair. "What's happening?"
"I.. can't-c-can't.. move.." Sweetie then realised that the mare was having a panic attack, which didn't come as much of a surprise to her. Her heart was racing and her whole body was quaking in a violent manner.
By the time she had eventually calmed down, Sweetie Belle had taken it upon herself to make Scootaloo comfortable again. She had wrapped a blanket around her and made her some fresh coffee, knowing it was her favourite drink. "Here you are.." She handed Scoots the cup carefully, trying impeccably hard not to spill any. "T-Thanks.." Scootaloo weakly smiled and Sweetie Belle sat next to her once more.
"You feel any better now?" She asked. Scoots nodded and took one last sip of her drink before placing it down on the floor, not being bothered to move to her table. "I.. I just can't believe it, really. As if this wasn't a 'war' already. The.. the fight is starting now. It'll all be over for us soon, just you watch.."
Sweetie Belle bit her lip and tried not to lash out on her best friend, considering she was all that Sweetie had left. "It.. it won't. We'll survive. I'll make sure we will." She pursed her lip once more after finishing, realising how she could have just triggered her friend's anger. "Keep believing that. Go for it. Just you wait until the whole of Equestria starts massacring each other. Then come back and tell me that."
Sweets found it the best time to change the subject before she started an argument. "Scootaloo?" She asked timidly, waiting patiently for a reply. "Yes?" The orange mare replied blankly, continuing to stare forward. "What happened to your flank?"
Scootaloo froze and slowly turned her head to face her best friend. "How.. how did you know about that?" Sweetie sighed. "When I picked you up earlier, it was blatantly obvious. Nothing was converting it or anything. You are wearing a hoodie and all, but it wasn't quite big enough to cover that scar.." Scootaloo frowned and bowed her head. "Yeah. I um.." She paused periodically, thinking of a way to explain.
"I.. I carved it off. We know I'm never gonna get my cutie mark, Sweetie! Let's face it, it was never ever gonna come! I.. let's just say I got sick of it. Sick of being the only damn Cutie Mark Crusader left. The CMC died years ago, but I can't say that's your fault. Cause, hey, it's not! It's purely mine for not getting my cutie mark. I shouldn't have gotten so mad at you all when I was the only one left. Anyway, all I can say is that I got sick of being a damn blank flank. So I.. I just cut it off. It shouldn't be coming any time soon.."
Sweetie listened intently, attempting pathetically not to cry or wail out of sympathy for her friend. She couldn't stand to watch Scootaloo like this. Just listening to the way she was speaking made her tear up, no matter about her actual words. However, she tried her hardest to fight back her tears, in an attempt to look tough.
"Didn't... that.. didn't that hurt you? You.. you cut off both sides of your flank! Precisions so delicate.. how? How did you do that? Why the hell didn't you stop at will? You.. you cut off flaps of your own skin just to avoid being called names! That's like plastic surgery - paying a hundred thousand dollars for some complements!"
Scootaloo picked up her mug of coffee and chucked it flying across the room, smashing against her wall. Coffee stains trickled from the newly made dent and sunk deep into her carpet. She watched in awe, pure anger filling her body. Suddenly, she flew up and zoomed to the other side of the room and placed herself next to the mug. "Do you want to know what this represents?" She said, even calmer than she thought she could pull off at this stage. "W-What?"
"My sanity! You see, when things break, Sweetie Belle, they're mostly unfixable. Take this mug, for example. It's smashed. But look at this.." Scootaloo picked up some pieces of broken clay and started jamming them into each other, lightly cutting her hoof in the process. "They don't go back together! It's broken, and it's broken for good! There's no fixing this mug. Scum.." she spat at it before flying back over to her bed. She watched Sweetie cower under her presence, not knowing what to expect next.
"My sanity broke when I lost my parents! Many years of bullying and overall isolation.. I was bound to crumble one day. And guess what? When I did.." Scootaloo leant in close to Sweetie Belle, positioning herself next to her ear. "I wasn't fixed.." she whispered. Hearing Sweetie flinch and lightly whine made her smirk and she pulled away, staring at her.
"But I'll be fine. Well, we can hope, am I right?" She smiled and nudged Sweetie's arm, making her flinch once more. "Sweets.. hey?" Scoots nudged her forcefully this time, gaining her complete attention. "Quit acting so scared. You know I couldn't hurt you.. you're all I have." Snarling at her own kindness, she laid back down.
"You.. you do scare me sometimes.." Sweetie admitted, finally loosening up and cautiously sitting with her back to the wall, securely next to Scootaloo. "I'm a scary person. What can I say, eh?" She flopped the blanket back over her and laid her head onto her tear soaked pillow, attempting to rest her eyes. They were too terribly bloodshot, but Sweetie either didn't mind, or was simply used to it.
"So.. when exactly is it gonna start? The.. the war?" Scootaloo asked cautiously. "About two weeks. At least, that's what I've heard. It's gonna be hell, I know.."
Scoots got up once more, slower this time. She walked to her wardrobe and swung open the doors, revealing an array of various weapons. "Christ!" Sweetie shouted, backing up against the wall, preparing her magic for any attacks, as Scootaloo was so unpredictable nowadays. "What the hell is all that for?"
"Oh, this?" Scootaloo asked smugly, as if she'd scripted this whole thing. "This, Sweetie Belle, is how we're gonna win the war.."
