Rainbow Crush Side Story: A Mare Named Medusa

I was once asked why I take races so seriously I told them to bug off, then under my breath as they trotted away, I sighed and whispered to myself my father’s name “Firestorm” as a teardrop escaped my eyes the race had started. I began to race not against anypony but against the memoires that I try to out fly with every string that holes my emotions together; If my memories are what make me then I don’t want to be called Spitfire, because my past turned me into a monster.

I can always out fly them, I can always get away from them, but today the very weather seemed to be against me just like that day…. {No no no ... think about anything else focus on race you have to win gold for them for my}… My body suddenly seizes as the very fabrics of my being start to rip apart as all the memories and emotions I had been denying since I was just a little foal finally catch up to me. I start to free full having no energy to move as my thoughts overtake my very instincts and push the idea of survival to the back of my mind; all that mattered now was the slide show that played out in front of me as my life flashed before my eyes.

My father was the most amazing stallion, he could out fly anypony, his speed and skill were beyond measure at the time he was the fastest of the Wonderbolts, but that didn’t stop me from racing him; everyday when he came home from work he would see me flying up to him from the distance and just as I was about to hug him, he would shout at the top of his lungs.

“3,2,1 and the race is on”

At which point I would try and catch him in a game of tag, but it was still a race as I had to catch him before dinner was ready this would usually go on for about half an hour before I would either catch him or run out of time. On the rare days that I did catch him he would always treat me to ice cream from the local parlor this was before dinner and without my mums knowledge; my dads favorite flavor and mine was Stormy Flare as it sheared my mothers name. No matter how many times we went to this ice cream parlor my farther never forgot to remind me that this was how he met my mother with a nice long corny story.

The story went like this: ‘My father asked for the flavor Stormy Flare and my mother thought he was talking to her, as she had never been to this parlor before and when he said to the stallion behind the counter that he loved the smell and taste of Stormy Flare and my mother being the kind of mare that she was, she shouted with all her might.

“Pervert!”

Whilst delivering a nice right hook to my fathers face. She would later apologize and get my father a scoop of Stormy Flare to eat as they both sat down and chatted until the store closed for the night.’ I always loved hearing that story my father might have been a Wonderbolt but he had all the makings of a comedian.

After half an hour my mother would always turn up at the ice cream store and with a sighing breath and with had a hint of annoyance, she would say.

“Dinner is cold and I’ll have a scoop of Zapp Apple”

She would then walk up to my father and whisper something into his ear and which point my dad would always shrink into his seat. It must have been something alone the lines of.

“Your sleeping on the couch tonight”

As their would always be a blanket on the sofa in the mornings when I won the game of tag.

The sound of thunder shouted through the clouds momentarily waking from my thoughts, before I sank back into them. I was homeschooled through out most of my childhood as my mother was once a teacher and my father wanted to personally shape me into the perfect Wonderbolt, so I never got to play with other ponies, but it was ok as I had my father my best friend what more could a child want, I had my mother, I had my father and I had ice cream, I was living the dream.

Another clap of thunder rang out and my eyes dilated as a bolt of lighting shot past me, narrowly missing me, but I didn’t care I was with my father again at the ice cream store, playing tag, watching his races… {I don’t want to dream anymore somepony wake me up.}

It was a blackened day, the sun was hidden behind many storm clouds as all pegasi were focused on only the race which was about to take place, the crowds were shouting with anticipation, it was my dads one hundredth race meaning he was going to be opening the ceremony with his legendary Sonic Flareboom, he did it every ten races, it took him years to develop it if not his entire life and he first preformed it in front of my mother in order to propose to her, of course she said yes. He started his dive in order to pick up enough speed everypony in the crowd was silent knowing they would witness something none of them could ever forget and no pony ever would. Just as the crowns of the air started to form around him, as the prismatic light that seemed like a second sun started to ignite from his tail… “ Mum why isn’t dad pulling up” I didn’t notice the look on her face; it was a combination of fear and horror. My father’s body went limp as he was falling quickly to the ground, the remaining Wonderbolts knew they couldn’t catch up and everyone in the crowed was silent with a sense of expectance on their faces and my mother was crying uncontrollably, she knew that their was nothing that could save him. My mother pulled me into a tight high shielding me from the sight that was about to unfold; all I heard was a sickening crunch of bone.

My father had fainted from exhaustion and it was all my fault, all those days I drove him to play tag, all those days were I got him in trouble were he had a sleepless night on the couch. I didn’t notice he was getting worse as I got better, I didn’t notice the look to tiredness and the worn expression that he was always wearing. It was my fault that he couldn’t pull off that Flareboom the same one he had pulled off a hundred times before, I wasn’t the only one that blamed me. My mother, even if she didn’t act like it she held a from of resentment it was in her voice, every time she said my name it felt like my ears were being filled with led. {I’m not a bad pony}. My mother became sick of my face, it only reminded her of the one she loved, the one that was taken from her; She sent me to study at the Cloudsdale Wonderbolt so that she would no longer have to see me, I cant remember the last time I talked to her.

As I trotted into my first day of class, I felt like I was being burned by the stares the students and the teachers, they all knew who I was and they all blamed me for what had become of my father. Just like that I started to race, I flew down the hallways as fast as I could and when I finally made it outside I went into a dive trying to get away from them as quickly as I could but my memories were catching up quickly, my tears streamed out peppering the sky behind me as I flew faster and faster towards the ground and my teacher made a quick pursuit trying to catch up to me in order to stop the worst from happening, she flew along side me

“Spitfire Stop! It’s Dangerous”

However I couldn’t hear her over the roaring thoughts that were gaining threatening to swallow me whole. The ground was fast approaching and without a seconds notice my teacher acted in order to save my life, she grabbed me and wrapped her body around me trying to protect me from the oncoming impact.

That day my teacher Agaponeis gave her wings for me, a few months later I went to visit her in the hospital I looked her in the eyes, the fight had been knocked out of her, he wings were nothing more than two severed stumps she looked at me and then looked the other way trying to avoid my eye contact. Before I could walk out she spoke up in a raspy voice,

“Spitfire don’t go, come here”.

I walked over to her bedside with tears falling from my eyes I asked her “You hate me right?”

She let out a small chuckle and shook her head

“Spitfire I don’t hate you, how could I possible hate someone that I was willing to give my life for?”

I was taken back a bit by her words “but I’ve ruined your life! How can you even look at me?”.

At that she smiled at me

“No you’ve just given new wings a new lease of life, why fly when I can run?”

I couldn’t believe what she was saying to me, she was a Wonderbolt flying should mean everything to her, before I could speak again she spoke

“Did you know I was good friends with your dad? I used to call him The On Coming Storm, because were ever he went he would cause some kind of trouble, he was even present the day I got my cutie mark.”

Agaponeis cutie mark showed two birds one green and one yellow both flying together. She looked at me and asked,

“Do you understand now?”

I simply shook my head, She simply sighed and said

“ I want you to become the best, and I want you to shine even brighter than your father so he can smile down upon you as you pull of his Flareboom.”

I was about to shout at her before she spoke again

“ He wanted you to become a Wonderbolt, he wanted you to become the best, but most of all he wanted you to out fly even him”.

I had nothing else to say, I was stuck in place for what seemed like hours as she simply smiled at me with a hint of sadness in her eyes. She spoke up again

“ you know your dad always used to make that face when he was contemplating something, so just speak up already!”

I simply said, “I’ll be the best flyer in all of Equestria just you wait and see”

To that she laughed uncontrollably. Before she noticed a bright light coming from my flank

“ah it seems that you have found your destiny young Spitfire”

I looked around to see my new cutie mark staring back at me, it depicted a flaming phoenix in mid flight a true symbol of freedom and speed. {I will be the best even if it kills me}

I awoke from my entranced state just second before I was about to hit the ground; I pulled up with everything I had before leveling out into a calm flight, before I landed on the ground. I found a tree to lean against and I just sat down in thought for a few hours until the sky had cleared and I began to make my way back the academy, I had a lot of training I needed to catch up on and a lot I needed to accomplish I wont let anything stop me.

Over the next five years I trained endlessly, I pushed away all of those that I considered a distraction, I fought all that looked down on me and I defeated all of those that stood in my way. Some how I ended up with a few nicknames one of them being Medusa, I guess I do have a cold heartless stare at least when someone challenges me after all you should never look into the eyes of your defeat. I am now considered to be the best flyer in the Wonderbolt academy and it is only time until I become a professional Wonderbolt and then the captain of the Wonderbolts nothing will stand in my way.

Now and then I visit my fathers gravestone, when I do I make sure to bring with our favorite flavor of Stormy Flare, after downing my scoop I clear the sky and perform for him just like he would for me when I was a foal. I miss him so extraordinarily so, but at least I can become the best like he wanted, I will never lose to anyone again, because if I did I don’t know what I would do with myself.

{But what if that prismatic Rainbow mare is faster than me?}

The End.
