The Eye of the Beholder’s True Beauty
By Thespia
Derpy Hooves woke up. The day was dark and dreary as the rain scattered across Ponyville. She felt a little alone. Derpy got out of bed, walked to the kitchen, and made muffins for her and her daughter Dinky. Dinky didn’t wake up, however and Derpy got worried. Derpy ran upstairs to Dinky’s room.
She must be sleeping in late. Derpy thought, as she opened the door. Quietly Derpy walked to her daughter’s bed. What she saw, made her gasp. Dinky’s purple coat was now pale and covered with red spots. Derpy knew that Dinky had the Pony Pox. She needed all the bed rest she can, because that’s the only cure for Pony Pox.
“No school for you today Muffin.”
“But Mommy…”
“No buts Muffin, you’re sick and you need your rest.”
Dinky knew that her mother knew best so she laid back down in bed. Derpy was very caring for her daughter as she always was. Ever since the day that had changed her life forever. It seemed like yesterday that she was walking down Ponyville and heard somepony shout, “You are a waste of my time! I never should’ve given birth to you!” She walked over and saw a baby unicorn in very bad shape and that broke her heart.
“It’s okay”, Derpy told the baby unicorn. “I’ll take care of you.” Derpy brought the baby home, cleaned her, fed her, gave her a bath, and then made a decision that changed her life. To raise the little filly as her daughter. She named her Dinky Hooves. When she saw how sweet as a muffin Dinky was, she started calling her Muffin.
“Mommy!” Dinky cried. “Can I get out of bed now?”
“No Muffin. You still need your rest until your spots clear up.”
Derpy just giggled a bit. Her daughter is such a school lover for sure. She had decided to take some time off from the Post Office and take care of Dinky. Derpy smiled; Dinky still hasn’t gotten her cutie mark and she still didn’t cast her first magic spell, but she’s still her little Muffin. Her little princess.
Derpy had done everything she could to make Dinky has everything she wanted or needed. Little by little Dinky’s temperature went down and her spots were clearing up. Dinky felt a little better because she was being taken care of by her mother. As soon as she was well the next week, Dinky went off to school.
As she was passing by one of the more stuck up foals, one of the two, a blue unicorn colt snickered at Dinky. Dinky noticed. And the other one, a brown Pegasus filly, whispered something in the unicorn’s ear. Dinky felt sad when the two laughed at her.
“Hey blank flank”, the unicorn shouted. “How’s your mama’s sight? Oh wait, her eyes are awful.”
“Your mommy always ruins everything when she touches them with her hooves”, the Pegasus added.
Dinky held the tears in her eyes as she came to the schoolhouse. Cheerilee noticed Dinky’s face and walked up to her. Dinky, slipped herself down at her desk. Cheerilee noticed the unicorn and Pegasus snickering. She glared at them both. They gulped.
Dinky had thought about what the two had said all day. The unicorn even said that she will never learn magic and her mother was useless. Dinky heard the dismissal bell ring. She walked to the door when the Pegasus made her trip on the steps with an outstretched wing. Dinky fell in the mud that the rain made.
Cheerliee ordered the unicorn and Pegasus to come inside for detention. Dinky walked with her coat all muddy, even her face and hooves.
Derpy was shocked to see her daughter in such mud. Derpy gave Dinky a bath. A bubble bath to be exact. Derpy and Dinky enjoyed it.
As Derpy got Dinky ready for bed, she asked, “Have those two meanies been picking on you and made fun of my eyes again?”
“Yes Mommy.”
“Muffin, have I ever told you what it means to have true beauty?”
“No Mommy. Tell me please?”
“You see, Muffin, being truly beautiful means to accept things the way they are. You have such a way of seeing so much good in everything. Including that you love me being the way I am. I know I can’t see very well and I break things but I have you to love and that’s all that matters. Remember that whatever is inside your heart is how you’re seen on the outside. Those two may think that they’re beautiful on the outside but inside, they’re ugly. You and I see and love everything the way it is. And that’s what really counts. Now it’s time for bed.”
Derpy held Dinky in her forelegs, and sang her the same lullaby she sang since Dinky was a baby.
Stars and moons and air balloons fluffy clouds to the horizon I’ll wrap you in rainbows and rock you to sleep again
Teddy bears of pink ducks and lambs of white don’t you cry dear I’m here now I’ll be your nightlight
Stars and moons and air balloons fluffy clouds to the horizon I’ll wrap you in rainbows and rock you to sleep again
Smiles to cure the frowns twirling and tumbling with laughter someday life will always be happily ever after
Never more will the storms come to destroy your little world never more will the waters rise till the mountains no longer touch the skies
Stars and moons and air balloons fluffy clouds to the horizon I’ll wrap you in rainbows and rock you to sleep again
I’ll wrap you in rainbows and rock you to sleep again
Derpy kissed her daughter goodnight, and said, “Sweet dreams Muffin.”
“Goodnight Mommy, I love you.”
Dinky fell fast asleep her face showing a smile. Derpy smiled back at her daughter. Derpy went to her room and straight to bed. Derpy smiled as she fell asleep.
Derpy may not have a husband but she didn’t mind. She has her daughter that she loves like her own.
Derpy has the way of brightening the lives of others as represented by her cutie mark. She hoped that Dinky will find her own special talent someday.
She did notice that Dinky has a talent for muffin decorating. She also saw her horn try to levitate a mixing bowl.
Someday.
