Night One: Memories

Lyra let out a long sigh as she levitated a framed picture of Bon-Bon in front of her. It had been about 2 years since her tragic passing, and it had started getting to Lyra. The accident that occurred that day was something that Lyra never ever forgot, or ever thought that she would. Her and Bon-Bon were walking through Ponyville one day, near the docks. They started joking about sailing around the world, and then they decided that they would go sailing sometime soon, not around the world, but a nice relaxing boat ride. Three days later, Bon-Bon had rented a boat, and they went on their journey...

——————————————————————————————————————————————————

"I can't believe that three days ago we were joking about sailing and now we're doing it."

"Believe it, cause it's happening, and dear Celestia is it nice looking."

Lyra was at the front of the boat watching the setting sun, her mane waving in the wind.
"That's just how our lives work now? We joke then we do it for real?"

"I guess so."

The two laughed, and Lyra walked back to the rear of the boat where Bon-Bon was at the wheel. She went over to a small crate that she had loaded on board earlier, not telling Bon-Bon what was in it. She levitated two glasses and one of the bottles from the crate, and filled the two glasses. Walking back over to Bon-Bon, she moved one glass in front of her face.

"Wine my dear?"

Lyra chimed in a fake high-class voice, and Bon-Bon put out her hoof to take the glass.

"Lyra, how did you get this?"

"The wine? Oh, I got some extra bits from odd jobs and though we could treat ourselves."

"You're an odd job."

"Yeah, but I'm your odd job."

The two clinked their glasses together and sipped at the amber liquid.

"Ooh, this is wonderful Lyra, where did you get it?"

"Eh, some pony I met, doesn't matter."
Bon-Bon shot Lyra a glare as the mint coloured pony drained her glass, eyes widening when her eyes met Bon-Bons.

"What?"

"Lyra, why would you take wine from some random pony?"

"He wasn't random, I met him before."

"Where?"

Lyra paused and sat blank faced, then began pouring herself a second glass of wine, hiding her face.

"That's what I thought."

Bon-Bon giggled a little bit, as did Lyra. The two mares sat and drank till it was dark, enjoying each other's company in the nice romantic scenario. But perhaps they had had too much. They had moved to sitting on the edge of the boat and were both Sitting on the side. Lyra began trying to make Bon-Bon laugh as hard as she could, and got up and started dancing around foolishly and talking in a horribly fake French accent.

"You look very beautiful tonight, I absolutely adore you, I want to kiss you under the moonlight."

Bon-Bon was sipping her drink only as much as possible, as this weird form of humor was actually making her laugh quite a bit.

"Cut it out Lyra, you're so silly."

"Yes, but I am your silly pony."

Bon-Bon continued laughing and laughing and soon enough so was Lyra.

"And I would like to add that-"

Lyra slipped in a puddle of wine that her antics had created, and fell to the floor of the boat with a low thud. Bon-Bon lost it at that point, laughing hysterically, and Lyra would've joined in if it hadn't been for what happened next. Lyra stood up slowly and looked in Bon-Bons direction, only to see her slowly tip back and fall off, a loud splash silencing her laughs. Lyra shot over to the edge of the boat and began trying to help her quickly sinking mare-friend.

"Bon-Bon! Help! Somepony help!"

——————————————————————————————————————————————————

Lyra shook her head and sat the picture back in its place, not bothering to wipe off her tears that had fallen onto it. She tried to settle into bed but ended up staying awake staring at the ceiling for the next hour and a half. She was about to drift into sleep when a sudden noise from the direction of the kitchen snapped her out of her daze.

"Who, who could that be?"

Keeping quiet, she got up out of bed and crept over to the door and peered out it down the hallway. Seeing nothing, she decided that it must've just been some animal outside. She got back into bed and closed her eyes, snuggling her blanket close to her. She let out a long sigh, easing further into her comfortable state. She closed her eyes and drifted into a light slumber. So light that the noise that came once again from the kitchen, which most ponies would've slept through, was able to wake her up.

"What is that noise?"

Her voiced was now slightly edged with fear, and she got up once again to check the hallway, and this time she decided to investigate further. She levitated a small flashlight from her nightstand drawer, and flicked it on and poked her head out the door.

"Hello?"

Her voice echoed slightly, and when no response but her own came, she decided she needed to go further. She walked out to the living area, checking everything out with the low beam of the flashlight, then the kitchen, where she first thought the sound was coming from. Room to room, wall to wall, she found nothing.

"Come on Lyra, it's just your mind fooling with you, just go back to bed."

She trotted back to her room and put away the flashlight. When she went to turn towards her bed, she stopped suddenly, the sight that met her on her nightstand froze her in fear. She could have sworn that she had that picture facing the bed, and it now faced her, the picture of her long deceased mare-friend staring at her. It pierced her very soul, it was as if Bon-Bon was asking

"Why Lyra? Why did this happen? Why did you let me drown?"

The voice bounced around inside her head like a foal waiting for recess to start, and Lyra collapsed to the floor, hooves to her head, praying for it to stop.

"I'm sorry Bon-Bon! I didn't want for this to happen! I'm so sorry."

Lyra broke down and began crying, weeping on the floor hour after hour. 3:51 AM, and Lyra was cried out, now sitting on the floor against the side of the bed, just staring at the picture.

"I'm so, so sorry I couldn't do anything to help Bon-Bon. I swear to Celestia I would've helped if I could have."

A knock on the door broke her from her thoughts, as she wondered.

"Who the heck would even be up at this hour?"

She tried to hide her emotions, wrapped herself in her blanket with magic, and walked towards the door. Also using magic, she opened the door to see a pony that she might actually enjoy talking to.

"Derpy? Why are you up so late?"

"Mail delivery! For you!"

"Mail? Why at this time of night?"

"I don't know, just open it."

She took the package from her saddlebag and Lyra took it in her magic, and began opening it. It was a small box, a little bigger than the bottom of her hoof on all sides. She tore it open, and in it sat a note. In perfect hoof writing was a note that struck Lyra as odd.

DEAR LYRA
I HEARD THAT YOU WERE SAD SO I WANTED TO CHEER YOU UP, BUT I WAS OUT OF MUFFINS AND THE STORE IS CLOSED SO IM SORRY.

FROM DERPY

"Wait, you wrote this Derpy? It seems so neat compared to the last time I saw your hoofwriting, and how did you hear I wa-"

When Lyra looked up from the paper to see that Derpy was gone, it only increased the uneasiness she already felt. She shook it off and went to try to sleep again. She got into bed, leaving the note on her nightstand, and within the hour, she fell into a deep sleep.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————

Lyra woke up earlier in the morning than she usually did, and she didn't much care for it.

"Ugh, why cant I just sleep for one full night? Whatever, I'm up, might as well do something."

She got up and immediately had to sit back down to collect herself. She had left the note right there on the nightstand, underneath the corner of the picture frame, and now it was nowhere to be seen. She checked every possible spot it could be, and decided to check to see if the box and its wrapping were still at the door as she had left it.

"Ok, w-w-what is going on here?"

She checked the trash, the table, everywhere in the house.

"I'm, I'm just gonna go, I'm gonna go see Derpy."

She went out the door and immediately started running towards the Whooves household. After a little while, she reached the front door and knocked three quick times.

"Who is it?"

"It's Lyra."

"Just a minute."

Lyra looked down and waited, kicking around a small rock until the door opened, revealing the brown earth pony that opened it.

"Hello Lyra, what brings you here?"

"Hey Doctor, uh, is Derpy here?"

"Why yes she is, Derpy Dear! Someone's here for you! She'll be with you soon, I must resume my work, good day Lyra."

"Later Doc."

Doctor Whooves walked away from the door and down a set of stairs to the basement, as Derpy flew from the upstairs and landed half on her hooves and half on her body on the floor, then shot upright.

"Hey Lyra, what's up?"

"Hey Derpy, uh, can I talk to you for a bit?"

"Sure, you wanna come in or are we gonna go out? Ooh! I made muffins, we can have some!"

Lyra looked down, he stomach rumbling, then looked up with a smile.

"Sure, we can talk here."

——————————————————————————————————————————————————

"Wow, that's weird."

The two mares had been sitting in the Whooves household living room for a while now, sipping tea and of course eating some muffins.

"Yeah, but I'm sure it was all just a weird dream."

"Yep, that's probably it."

"Well, that helps a bit, and I'm pretty sure that it's all just my imagination running wild."

"Yeah, it'll be fine by tonight."

"Derpy dear? Can you can here a minute? I require assistance in the form of some sort of weapon!"

"Oh, I got to go help the doctor, just a second."

"Oh it's ok, I should be going anyways, thanks for the talk Derpy, and of course the muffins."

"No problem Lyra, bye!"

Derpy grabbed the small crowbar from the corner of the room in her teeth and flew down the stairs with it. The sound of the crowbar hitting against metal could be heard as Lyra left the building.

"Hmm, what am I gonna do now?"

Lyra looked up, it was maybe three or so she thought, and she decided to go back home and relax her mind, and her body.

"Jeez, why am I so tired? Must have been that dream or something weird like that."

——————————————————————————————————————————————————

Some time later, Lyra arrived back at her home, and she immediately sat down on the couch. She decided to turn on the television, the news would probably be on now. The moment she flipped the channel to the one that played the daily news, she regretted it. She watched as the yellow unicorn on the screen held her microphone in front of her with her magic and reported the horrible event that had happened.

"The scene behind me is one that is certain to scar most. The body of formerly missing Bon-Bon of Ponyville was found by a group of swimmers earlier this day."

As the mare walked over to a random bystander to interview them, Lyra caught a glimpse of several ponies hoisting Bon-Bons limp, lifeless body ashore, and she swore that her eyes were staring straight at her. She immediately leapt off the couch and ran towards the bathroom. Several minutes later, Lyra came out of the bathroom to the sound of knocking on her door. She quickly rinsed her mouth out with mouthwash, and walked towards the door. She opened it to reveal something that almost made her have to run back to the bathroom.

"Hello, I'm with Ponyville news, do you have the time for an interview?"

Lyra's mind raced as she scrambled for an answer, did she really want to talk about what just happened?

"Um, uh, no, no I don't."

"You sure?"

"Yes, I'm positive."

"Becuase we heard rumors that you are involved with the mare they just found, Bon-Bo-"

"I don't wanna talk about it, now get out of here."

"Why are you so hostile all of a sudden? We just want to tal-"

Lyra was quite aggravated with the news-pony's perseverance, and decided to do something about it. Quickly, she grabbed the camera pony's camera with her magic, and with all she could, she threw it behind them. A thud, followed by the sound of broken glass left the news team in awe.

"Leave."

"Miss Lyra, I'll have you know th-"

Lyra slammed the door shut and walked into her room, and was greeted with yet another gut-wrenching sight. She didn't leave the picture of Bon-Bon on the floor, and the glass certainly wasn't cracked before.
