"High" Aspirations

Sometimes, I feel as though I'm insane. Not one of those people that do the stupidest things for no reason or one of those mad scientists that come up with insane ideas, but just a guy that feels as though nothing is making sense in his world. Why would I feel this way?

Because without being under any outside influences, I saw a big, white pony with wings, a horn and a crown in the park on my way from work. Was she a hallucination? Was I going nuts? Did I have any idea what it meant?

I didn't have the answers to any of these questions, but since the second was probably true, I don't think I will ever get them.

It seemed almost like a cartoon figure, as though it had jumped straight from a television out to the real world. Maybe I've seen it before someplace and my mind wanted to project it as a happy image foil to the repetitive, sad world everyone has to live in.

Considering I don't remember ever seeing the figure, I decided to stick with my insanity case.

I tried to shake the curious thought from my head as walked into my kitchen, heating some leftover pasta my roommate left on the counter. He was the only one I really talked to when he was here, me mostly living on my own in the lonely apartment, since he works day shifts while I work nights. We usually had an hour or two a day before I left for work, but I knew it was the only time I'd have to talk to someone about the mysterious figure.

It didn't make matters any easier when I caught another glimpse at the unicorn-like thing outside my window, flying away into the sunset. Thankfully, since the sun was setting, it meant my roommate would be returning home in a half hour or so.

So I thought it would be good to forget about it with some mindless television, at least until I can start talking about it with my roommate. But try as I might, every channel we had seemed to have the same program - boring. Maybe if we had more than 30 channels, there might have been more of a chance of catching a good show.

Turning off the television, I checked on my pasta to see how much longer it'd take.

"5 minutes. I guess I'll just pop on the computer until then."

So I put the kitchen laptop out of sleep mode, only to realize that this was my roommate's personal computer, not mine. We had similar computers, so it wasn't easy to tell them apart, at least until I saw the big background on his desktop. The one with the words 'My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic' in the middle, hovering above what seemed to be the entire cast of the show.

Initially, I had thoughts about what he does with the show, as I had heard quite a bit about the community and what they do. All of that vanished from my head as I took a quick look at the side of the picture, showing a familiar image to something I had seen before.

It was the big, white thing with the wings and horn from the park.

What could this have meant? I had absolutely no idea, since I know I had never seen the show. Looking for any way to get answers, I opened his browser and searched up 'white pony with wings and horns', ignoring the interesting bookmarks he had placed right below the search bar.

Just as I had begun searching, I zoned my mind out of everything else, bent on discovering anything more about this pony for whatever reasoning my mind gave for it. Even when my microwave had beeped to tell me my pasta was done, it was only met with a loud "Shut up!" and a shoe thrown at it in an attempt to silence it. Several warning beeps later, I walked over an unplugged it, never wanting to hear that sound again.

I was just about to resume my search when a knocking noise came from my door.

"Eric, just open the door! You have a key, don't you?" I called out to the door, expecting my roommate to reply. It was a little early for him to be here, but I opened the door anyway to let him in.

Thing was, it wasn't a him. And judging by the knock I had heard from the door, it wasn't really a figment of my imagination as I had thought.

It was that 'Celestia' pony.

Before I had a chance to gawk and question the pony, a hoof was raised as she began to speak.

"Hello, human. I am Princess Celestia of Equestria, come to find a certain 'Eric' king that I had heard about," the thing - er, Princess Celestia - introduced. "Well, since you are a human, I am guessing you are not Eric. Judging by your awe-filled expression, you seem a little confused. Do you want me to explain?"

I nodded my head, jaw having been lowered the entire time.

"May I come in? It looks like a storm is coming, and you don't seem to have somepony like Rainbow Dash to deal with the weather."

I stood completely still, save for another nod in her direction. It took me some time before I sat down on my couch, only to resume my stricken expression as I gawked at her.

"In Equestria, a pony named Twilight Sparkle and myself wanted to use our combined magical powers to gain the ability to go to other realms, which we thought was a great idea to meet some other fellow rulers in other pony realms. I was teleported here, in your realm, which was confusing as there were no ponies visible. In fact, not a single one of you humans was in sight in your local park!" Celestia explained.

I had closed my jaw by then, but my mind still took the situation as another figment of my imagination.

"Now, you were the first person I saw, so I followed you to your home with as little forwardness as possible, trying to keep my distance. I didn't know if you were docile or not."

Docile? Even if she's royalty, I'm not someone's pet-

"When you walked into your home, I was about to knock on the door to see if you could tell me anything about the realm's ruler. Instead, I saw a big poster plastered on your roof as I flew by, with a regal looking pony and the words 'Eric' inscribed on the top."

"Hold on a second, miss. Now, I know you're royalty and all, but surely you must be wrong. I've never seen a pony in this world. Eric is my roommate, and is also a human. He isn't some ruler, he isn't a pony, and he certainly won't be having that poster up once I get to it. It must have been his alias for his 'brony' friends or whatever they're called," I responded.

Celestia didn't seem too happy about the situation, but she walked over to the living room, saying a few more words before she went silent.

"So you're saying that there's no one I can talk to?"

"You can talk to humans."

"But you seem so... different than what we are used to."

I thought about this for a moment, deciding to appease the figment of my imagination. After all, if I'm crazy, isn't it better to come to terms with it by talking directly to it?

"You could bring me with you to your land, and I could make everyone feel comfortable with humans there! Besides, once I return, Eric would be so jealous."

I continued to make my mind believe I believed every moment of this hallucination, but every second that passed, I felt as though this was truly real. I could catch a slight hint of an aromatic flower scent coming from the pony, and every time she moved, the carpet beneath her moved with her. It became nearly impossible for any onlooker to believe she wasn't there, and if it were true, I'd probably be freaking out a lot more than I am now.

"I'm sorry, but I don't know much about your people. You could all be terrible creatures that think about doing horrible things to others of your species and I wouldn't have a clue! I'd be introducing a new threat to my subjects, and I'm not going to risk the happiness of my land in any way."

I couldn't help myself at 'happiness of my land'. If this was indeed true, which I was practically convinced of by this point, this opportunity could be my one and only chance at living in a happy community, away from all of the terrors of this world that Celestia was right to be cautious of.

"Now, since I don't have any chance of meeting fellow royalty here, it seems my only option is to leave. I know that you will say something about how nice you are in an attempt to convince me, but it won't work. Even if you are, once again, I can't take that risk. You're better in this life, where you are comfortable and people know you."

"Hey, I'm nice!" I said, hopeful that she would change her mind despite what she had just said. "You don't seem to be as kind as you seem to be on the show description, since it says you are extremely-"

"Wait, what? What is this 'show' you speak of? Where is there a description of myself, and why?" Celestia interrupted, a little held back at my reply.

This wasn't going to be easy to explain.

"You are a character on a television show. You were made by a human, and probably a figment of my imagination, even though you look really, really real right now. The show is called 'My Little Pony', and you along with the other characters on the show do... stuff. I don't watch the show."

Celestia shook her head, resuming her friendly smile she had when she first arrived. Why did she smile? Did she not believe me?

"You seem a little odd, human. I suggest you stay out of the sun. Now if you will excuse me, I need to teleport back to my land and you being here prevents me from doing that."

Wait, prevents her? Does she teleport living beings within a certain radius of where she's standing?

"As I said before, please stay out of my general area so I can leave," Celestia chided, a little annoyed.

I was fully aware that she was not happy, and I knew I could try out this new land it I was persistent in annoying her for a little longer.

"Please let me come with you! It would mean a lot to me! Please, oh please, let me come with you! I promise I won't cause any harm!"

Celestia furrowed her eyebrows down, getting angrier and angrier by the minute. I wasn't sure anymore if angering her was a good idea, being a mystical princess and all, so I decided just to try one more time.

"You'll benefit from having me, and I won't leave your vicinity if you don't let me come!"

Celestia seemed to come up with an idea, which scared me for some reason. If someone's angry and they suddenly have an idea, it's probably not beneficial to you.

"I'll let you come with me, but only if you stop harassing me!" Celestia appeased, showing the slightest glimmer of a devious smile. I didn't care how devious she wanted to be, or if her idea was malicious or not, because I was just told that I could enter a new, happy world. Even if I didn't really know much about it, and I had generally disapproved of the whole thing before, I knew it would be better than this place.

Besides, if I returned back someday, Eric would be so jealous!

"Ok, I'm about to begin the teleportation spell to Equestria. Stay within my general vicinity, and don't disturb me while it's going on. Hopefully you won't get any bruised or broken bones from the whole thing."

Wait... broken bones? What's about to happen?

I didn't have time to think about it. In a flash of white light, my living room disappeared from my view, only to be replaced by a cartoony sky I saw above me, along with the long green fields and trees lying about a kilometre below me.

It took me a few moments to realize that having the ground a kilometre below me was not really a good thing, and that falling from this height would kill pretty much anyone, pony or no, that didn't have wings. I also noticed that I was levitating with a golden aura - or barrier, I couldn't tell the difference - surrounding me. The same golden colour was visible surrounding Celestia's horn, and it was the same that she had displayed when she teleported the two of us.

Flying in my direction, she stopped a few feet from where I was levitating, pulling off the most light-hearted smile I have ever seen.

"Oh my, it looks like I teleported us a little too high from where I wanted to go. It's a good thing I used my magic to keep you here, eh?"

I couldn't say anything. I was filled with too many emotions at once; fear from the extremely dangerous height, awe at the princess' magical abilities and complete and udder amazement when I realized that none of this was a figment of my imagination.

My dreams of happiness were about to come true, as soon as I reach the ground.

"I can tell you need some time for this to sink in. I'll let you go, don't worry, then you can go converse with the rest of Equestria! I hope you have a nice stay!"

I was so relieved at her words of encouragement. I was about to be let down safely, no broken bones as I had feared. It was a good moment to be alive.

So it surprised be a little when she began flying away, while the gold aura around her horn and myself slowly dissipated into nothingness. It wasn't for a few moments that I began realizing that I was falling, and that she had left, leaving me to fall for my death.

Oddly enough, even though I was plummeting to my death, my mind soothed me by making me believe this was still a figment of my imagination. Maybe I was going crazy the whole time.

Maybe I was about to die.

I didn't really have a chance to panic though, because by the time I knew it wasn't all a hallucination, I had hit the ground.

So much for the kind Princess Celestia, eh?
