“I will tell you of a history only God and I know.”

In a rift between twilight and dawn, a young pony leaned over a looming abyss. On this grassy hill, one half of reality seemed to have been cut out, as if god had removed half of the hill on a whim.

The pony gripped her bow, which thrummed with a magical aura, as her gaze lost itself in the darkness below. It could not stare back, as it had long lost its bite.

With a blink of her eyes, the abyss had disappeared, and the missing half was restored in an instant.

“This is how it should be. This is how it always was.” Mumbling this, the pony sat on the grass and placed the bow next to her. “And yet I will now share with you the story of a different world. A world... devoid of hope, until one pony rejected the very laws it was built on.”

Without turning around, she could understand another being had approached her and also listened to her words.

“Despite—or maybe because of—your great knowledge you will probably flat out dismiss what I am about to tell you. Your lack of empathy will make it almost impossible to cause any sort of reaction within you, and yet I want you to listen to me. As for you over there... the knowledge I am about to impart will be vital for our future.”

“Hey Somnia, I forgot my homework, can I copy yours?”

“Oh, sorry Momo, but I don't actually have it myself.” Somnia turned sideways towards her viridian friend Momo, hoof in front of her glasses to cover her purple eyes in shame.

The clock on the classroom wall ticked ever closer to eight o' clock, which would signal the beginning of today's first lesson. Despite this, students copying their homework at this time was standard procedure.

“Well at least I'm not the only one who forgot their homework then...” She quickly placed her hoof on Somnia's shoulder. “Hey, how about we meet after school and then we can work on the next bit of homework together!”

A faint hint of a smile appeared on Somnia's face, but it quickly vanished as she spoke. “Thanks, but...” She twisted her head away from Momo and said, “I don't think I could actually help you in any way. Just go ahead and do it without me. I need to brush up on some earlier lessons, because I'm already falling behind.”

Momo retreated for a bit. She slowly tapped her lip with her hoof, until she eventually moved back in. “But doesn't that mean you will miss the next homework assignment as well?”

Somnia waved her hooves in front of her face while shrinking into her seat. “It's okay really, I'll just sit down at home and catch up with everyone else, maybe then we can do homework together after that?”

Momo put on a smirk and patted her on the back. “That sounds good. Tell me whenever you are ready. I'll be waiting.”

Somnia's face gave way to an honest laughter. “You know, Momo, this reminded me of something, I think it would be really great if... if...” A sudden shot of pain rippled through Somnia. She contorted her face, pressed her fore-hoof against her chest, and hit the floor with a dull thud.

“Somnia what's wrong? Somnia!”
