Ch. 1: No Flight

I own Non Fuga Color Shades and . Ask before use. I'll probably say no.

A young griffon sat on his bed, his mother sitting and singing beside him. No one would think of such a situation strange until the words “his mother was a unicorn” were uttered. It was true; his mother was unicorn with a dark violet coat who went by the name of Color Shades. Her mane and tail were a pitch black and stood out among her features.

Non Fuga was the name of the griffon. He wasn’t happy with the name due to its meaning but it was title he was given by the Elders. The Elders were never questioned after all. They were always right and that was that.

“Mama? Why am I such a freak?” The little griffon suddenly asked.

Fugas mother ceased her singing to look into the eyes of her young one in surprise, “What gave you the idea that you’re a freak Fuga?” She asked.

The young griffon looked into his mothers’ eyes without responding. His eyes showed true and terrible sadness. Knowing he wasn’t going answer the question, Shades hugged her little griffon tightly, “You are not a freak Fuga. You were perfect the first time I saw you and you’re perfect now.”

Non Fuga returned the hug silently and the two of them stayed this way for a good while. After what seemed like hours which had only been minutes, Color Shades once again began to sing.

You are the light of my life,

Through the pain, sadness, and sores.

You will always be there by my side,

And I will be there by yours.

When all is said and friends are gone,

When you have no one to look to,

Just take a look and you will see,

That I will always be with you.

The bad things in life,

Make the good things more wonderful.

Never forget what you are…”

Shades paused for a minute before staring into the eyes of her son.

“…Beautiful.”

I male wingless griffon walked through the streets of the Crystal empire. He looked around at the beautiful buildings. They were Crystal so it was no surprise the he would be in awe. It’d be a nice place to visit. Fuga certainly wouldn’t want to live here though. It wasn’t his…cup of tea. Even more so the screaming ponies running all directions of fear of the evil griffon hybrid.

Before long a couple of guards came with their spears and aimed them in his direction.

“You have been accused of causing destruction and panic sir.” , one of the two guards said indifferently, “Please come with us so we can sort out this misunderstanding.” The two guards then turned around and Fuga followed suit. No use resisting, it was obvious these guards didn’t give a rats behind what the Crystal ponies were worried over.

Breaking the silence Fuga spoke, “This happen a lot?”

The second guard who hadn’t spoken answered, “You have no idea. After the Changeling incident, Crystal ponies will freak out over the smallest things. What’s more annoying is that you’re a griffon. Plenty of griffons have visited here and no one gave a crap.”

They all went silent until arriving at the castle.

The Princess of Love sat before Non Fuga in her study.

“I’m terribly sorry for the little incident. The Crystal ponies can be a little…panicky at times.”

Fuga nodded his head, “It’s alright Your Highness. Honestly I’m used to reactions like that. Helps keep up a reputation.”

Cadance smiled, “Please, call me Cadance. I do however notice that I never got your name.”

The griffon frowned ever so slightly before speaking, “Fuga. My name is Non Fuga.”

Cadance thought for a moment, “Non Fuga? I’m afraid I’m not familiar with all languages. What does that mean?”

The griffon once again looked deep into the eyes of the Princess, “‘No Flight.’”

“Come on! We’re gonna miss it!” Non Fuga yelled pleadingly as he, his mother, and his father walked down the path of Talon Village. Today the four alicorn princess’ were to make a decree in Griffonstone of the peace treaty made between the and the Griffon Elders.

“I don’t think our own carriage is going to leave without us Fuga.” These words of wisdom were uttered by the young griffons’ father, “We did hire them after all.”

Fugas father was of a sturdy build. His feathers were very dark in color and the feathers around his head and beak were a deeper shade. His primaries were the only bright part as red war paint was stained on them from years of fighting. Unlike those years he was very happy and calm at the time as was his wife.

Non Fuga did not feel as relaxed as his parents and proceeded to push them from behind, “But what if the Princess’ are called to go somewhere important before we get there? What if a catastrophe happens and we could have helped?” he gasped in horror, “What if no one shows them where the SNACKS are!?”

With a chuckle, Fuga’s parents quickened their pace to match their sons.

Griffonstone had never had so many griffons even though it was the largest city in the Griffon lands. Today was a huge event. Five years of peace between Equestria and the Griffon lands was to be celebrated today. The Four Princess of the largest country in the world, besides Discordia of course, were to attend.

Color Shades sat next to her husband Magna. The two of them were simply sharing their time together. Fuga, however, had other plans. He immediately headed over to the area with the other griffons. There were even a few colts visiting from Equestria.

In front of them was a large Wooden stage that Fuga recognized to be Redwood. Next to it a podium stood, made of the same material.

Sitting down he waited for what felt like hours. Five minutes past a thumping of wood on wood silenced the crowd. Elder Magia stood at the podium. His staff in claw he pulled a paper out from inside his wing. Setting it on the podium in front of him he began his speech.

“Hello everyone. I am the Elder Magia. I am here to introduce to you the Princess’ of Equestria. Before I do, they have granted me a few minutes to speak first.” He paused for a moment.

“I know as all of you should know that years ago, ponies and griffons hated each other. This was caused by an opinionated desire to be the ruling species of the world. Griffons would see ponies as insignificant and weak due to their lack of claws. Ponies found it absurd that a nation could be led by a hybrid, which, brothers and sisters, we are. A combination of beaks, feathers, and scales.” Another pause occurred.

“But then one day, the Chief Elder of Griffonstone, may his soul be blessed, offered to make a peace treaty between our lands and Equestria. All were eager to stop the fighting so a new force rose up. Though it has no name that it can be remembered by it is known as The Reformation. This group of ponies and griffons marched over all the lands recruiting. They fought and defeated the fools who still believed themselves better than their peers.” He breathed a sigh. He almost seemed to falter. Regaining his composure he finished his speech.

“That happened one hundred years ago on this very day. On this day we shall remember that ponies and griffons are equals. They shall live together, they shall fight together, and they shall die together if the need be.” He reached up with his right claw and cried out in the Ancient Griffon Tounge, a speech that was understood only by its own species. The entire crowd responded with the same cry. Even a few of the ponies attempted to as they had been so moved by the speech.

“I now give you the Princess’ of Equestria!” Elder Magia looked to his right.

“Princess Twilight Sparkle, Element of Magic and Princess of Friendship!”

Fuga saw the purple princess step on to the stage. She stood more to the right side of the stage near the podium but luckily because he had gotten his seat, he would get a view of everypony.

“Princess Mi Amore Cadenza, Ruler of the Crystal Empire and Princess of Love!”

Several wolf whistles could be heard as the next princess stepped upon to the stage. Fuga would have glared at them if he knew what a wolf whistle was. Too mesmerized by her beauty he almost didn’t notice the next princess.

“Princess Luna, Monarch of the Night!”

Fuga stared in awe at the mane of Princess Luna. Her mane was impressive to say the least. How did she possibly comb it? It was made of stars.

“And finally, Princess Celestia, Sovereign of the Day!”

The sun seemed to become fifty times brighter as she stepped onto the stage. Fuga just couldn’t imagine how she or her sister could possibly get any work done with all that hair in the way. Was it magic? He didn’t know and he didn’t care. They were all beautiful and that was the most important, and who knew how powerful they were with those horns?

Princess Celestia spoke, “On behalf of the citizens of Equestria we thank you for the one hundred years of peace you have given us. I remember one hundred years ago when I would look into the eyes of griffons and see an enemy. Now I can look at you as friends. We have brought a variety of both foods and party games from back in our land. I hope that we can learn many of yours as well. And now the celebration.”

Cheers broke out from the crowd and soon the princess walked off the stage to converse with the elders. Both griffons and ponies alike began to converse and play games together. The celebration was a huge success.

After the final announcement, Non Fuga had headed over to one of the food booths. It was a pony booth and he was curious as to the kind of food they had. He walked up to the booth to see a neon pink pony.

“Um…excuse me miss uh…” The pony turned pinked maned head around and smiled wide enough to spilt her face.

“Oh! Hey there! You’re a griffon aren’t you? I think griffons cool. They have really amazing talons and their beaks so amazing looking. They can even fly which makes them cooler. Do you like cotton candy? It’s the best candy in the whole wacky world. You should try some. Only if you haven’t had candy already cause then you’ll get a stomach ache and you won’t smile and my job is to make ponies smile so we can’t have that. I’m Pinkie Pie! What’s your name?”

Several moments passed before Fuga found his voice hiding somewhere in the back of his head.

“Um…I’ve never had cotton candy before. Could I have that?”

Pinkie Pie smiled even wider which honestly shouldn’t have been impossible. She pulled out a medium sized cone with something that looked like pink cotton on top. Fuga had never seen anything like it.

“First one’s free buddy!” She waved to him as he grabbed the cone and headed off after thanking her.

Fuga continued to walk through the now festified town. Streamers hung from buildings, colorful lights shown every now and then. There was even a clown hitting himself with a rubber chicken. Griffons didn’t have clowns on account of the thought that they were silly. That didn’t stop them from watching the show though.

Fuga looked at the wonderful town. His mind began to wander and he started to remember places, one of them being his favorite place to play. He started to remember playing marbles on the beach, by himself, or playing ball in the street, alone, or reading a book, unaccompanied. Soon the thoughts of joy turned to one of sadness. He really did pretty much everything without help or reassurance. The only two to care about him were his Mother and Father and their jobs kept them away most of the time.

Fuga pushed this to the back of his mind for now and opted not to think about it. He looked at the pink sugar ball in from of him and took a piece. As soon as it touched his tongue he was assaulted by it’s wonderful taste. He proceeded to shove as much into his mouth as he could.

“Three pounds please.”

“Of course si…wait…what?” The pony looked bewildered at such an odd request.

“I said three pounds of pink cotton candy, preferably all in one bag.”

The ponies looked around slightly worried. He didn’t want to upset a customer but he knew three pounds of cotton candy wasn’t exactly…protocol if that’s the right word to use.

“Um…I’m afraid I can’t exactly um…” He stopped speaking when the Griffon in front of him simply laughed.

“I’m just messing with you. One cotton candy please” Fugas’ smile infected the pony and he handed Fuga the mountain of calories. Fuga grabbed it and payed. He then continued in the direction he was previously walking in. As he did he looked aback to make sure no one could see and tossed the cotton candy into a nearby trash bin.
