The King Atop The Tower
King Sombra stood atop the tallest tower in the Crystal Empire, the corrupted crystal heart spun lazily between two dark crystal shards behind him. Once a beacon of peace and love, it was now an inky black with purple veins pulsing periodically on its surface. Those pulses would then travel below him, making their way under the earth and through a tremendous cavern filled to the brim with crystals. The crystals were Sombra’s salvation that Discord had promised him. They proved an extra line of defence against the opposing forces stationed outside the city’s limits.
Gazing out to the east, he saw the two pony sisters on the horizon. Dressed in gleaming battle armour with a shine that was hard to look at, each wielded a weapon the size of the average chariot.They would take a while to get here. His soldiers would see to that. And all the while he would be standing here. Watching, waiting, planning.
Another day had passed. Sombra had stood atop that same tower all night. He had received word from his top adviser that his final project was finished. He smiled, believing in it’s ability to bring his two main adversaries down to their knees in victorious fashion. When he falls into the confrontation with the Royal Sisters, that is when his plan will activate. And one way or another, he will return greater than ever, making all ponies bow before him.
He shivered, not from fear or the cold, but from anticipation.
The Sisters drew closer. After crossing through the tower doors, all they had to do was climb up the staircase and then come face-to-face with their worst nightmare.
Turning his gaze towards the crystal table in front of him, Sombra gasped as his eyes widened whilst looking down upon his salvation. He called it ‘The Alicorn Amulet.’ It's blood red gem gently pulsated the flow of power from the crystals. That was Sombra’s final ploy, the last gear in his master plan. He shuddered as a familiar power washed over his body, making him say to himself, 'The princesses are here, but they have come too late. The darkness shall always survive, until every last candle: every last bastion of light, is erased from this mortal plane. And then, then I will leave this world behind, and walk amongst the heavens as the God I am.'
He heard their metal-shod hoofsteps, clanking up the crystal stairway that was designed to amplify sound. Every single moment of his life had led up to this moment, all he ever needed was enough time to set his plan into motion. From the deal with Discord, all the way to the tremendously long staircase that led to the top of the tower he was standing on, all of them were designed with this one moment in mind, all of them were designed to give him more time.
It was time now. The die had been cast, the stage was set, and the finale was at hand. The Princesses alighted onto the balcony, only a few meters away from him, their armour dented and burnt, and their weapons discarded on the ground far below. He didn't turn around.
"Sombra!" He heard Celestia shout. "For the crimes that thou hast committed against the kingdom of my sister and I, we offer you but one mercy: Surrender now and release all of your citizens, and we will grant thee a quick death from the elements."
All Sombra let out was a low chuckle.
"Face us you cur!" Shouted Luna, he could almost taste her rage, she would make a wonderful dark magic user. "Or I shall smite thee from where you stand!"
Sombra did nothing, he just remained with his back to them, staring out at his rightful kingdom.
"Sister, secure the crystal heart." Ordered Celestia, her tone business-like.
"As thou command sister." Replied Luna, her tone mirroring Celestia's. Without letting a sound escape her lips, she dove forward, and latched her forehooves around the corrupted heart. At that exact second three things happened: Sombra spun around, the alicorn amulet glittering on his chest, before shifting into smoke and slamming into Celestia, almost knocking her off the tower, Luna yelped as shards of dark crystals erupted from the ground around her, entrapping her, and the corrupted heart pulsed with raw magical power, before letting it out in a wave that enveloped Luna. That wave was filled with all the crystal ponies fears and broken dreams, and it hurt worse than any physical weapon.
She felt their despair, their hopelessness under the rule of Sombra, and their physical pains as
well. They were forced to labour in a mine day after day, she felt every pulled muscle, every torn ligament, every broken bone. She heard every cry for help, saw every single abuse.
Her scream could be heard for miles.
Meanwhile Sombra and Celestia were engaging in an awesome display of magical and physical prowess. Celestia shot out brilliant beams of golden magic, whilst Sombra just turned into smoke and watched them pass through him. He was on the defensive, whilst she was pulling out all the stops and trying to hit him.
That all stopped when Luna's scream rang out into the mountainside. Celestia immediately went to her sister's side, before finding her way blocked by the dark crystals. She pounded on them desperately, tried to fly over them only to be pushed back down by gale force winds, even tried to blast them to bits with her horn, but it was useless.
"Ye dare to come unto mine kingdom and threaten to taketh what is, by birthright, rightfully mine?" Sombra stated, his voice calm and collected. "Then ye shall watch as I beat you and your sister, before taking thy kingdom for mineself as well."
Celestia turned back around and looked Sombra in the eye, before spitting directly at his hooves.
That was a mistake.
Sombra gestured with a hoof and summoned a dark crystal spear, twirling it a few times in his magical aura, before diving forward and thrusting it at Celestia. The solar princess barely managed to block it with a magical barrier, before seeing Sombra turn into smoke and dash past her, spear at his side. She winced in pain when she felt the dark crystals scrape along her coat, and struggled not to shiver as she felt them draw blood.
Swiftly pivoting, Celestia let out a coruscant beam of golden magic, which hit the shadow-cloud and blasted Sombra out of it. He landed hard on top the crystal tower, and watched as his spear flew away from him. Celestia landed in front of him, horn glowing, before letting out a colossal beam of golden magic that Sombra managed to block by summoning a dark crystal partition, which swiftly crumbled under the magical power of the attack. Pressing her advantage, Celestia galloped forward and plowed through any crystals in her way.
Sombra, eyes wide, started thickening his barriers, forcing The day Alicorn to slow down and punch them. As dark crystals crumbled beneath her forehooves, Celestia shouted: "It didn't need to be like this, Sombra! You were a good pony once, a great one, why!? Why did you do this!?" She punctuated each sentence by smashing even more barriers with her raw physical prowess. "Was I not good enough for you!?"
"We are above the petty matters that thou proclaimest of, Celestia. For soon we will be a God, and us Gods have no need of morality nor love, such things only hold one back from achieving greatness." Sombra stated calmly, his back now against the crystal guardrail, with Celestia rapidly closing in. "All that matters to Gods is the search for power."
Celestia crushed his final barrier and took to the sky with a flourish of her graceful wings, "I'm so sorry Sombra, if you're still in there that is." Her horn lit up with a blinding amount of force, and blazed downwards, cracking the crystal floors, and demolishing the crystal guardrails. As the smoke cleared there was... nothing. No Sombra in sight. Looking around, she was greeted with Sombra flying directly above her, amulet glittering on his chest. Celestia was gobsmacked. Sombra didn't even have wings! How was this possible? She grit her teeth, it didn't matter. If he could fly, it would just mean he would fall all the harder. She dove towards him, shielding herself with her golden magic and hitting Sombra dead center, sending him reeling backwards into his own dark cloud layer.
She took this time to check on Luna. She was in the center of the crystals, staring at the crystal heart. A beam of astral power seeped from Luna's horn and into the malevolent object. Muttering fiercely under her breath, she shifted in place, before letting out a triumphant cry as the heart let out another pulse of magic and the crystal spikes retracted.
Right in time for Sombra to barrel into them, not physically harming them, but blinding them with the smoke. Which burned their throats and stung their eyes.
"Sister!" Luna yelled, her elements of harmony wavering slightly in her grasp. "Sister where are you!" Her voice seemed deadened by the smoke, which reduced her visibility to zero. "Luna, Luna is that you?" She heard her sister's voice in front of her, Luna galloped towards her as fast as she could. She came upon a scene from her worst nightmares.
Celestia was backed up to the crystal balcony, she lay on the ground, her armour shattered, her hair limp, her right leg bent at an unnatural angle, with small, black crystals dug into her horn, and Sombra's armoured hoof pressed tightly against her throat. Celestia spasmed in pain, and blearily looked over to where her sister was standing in shock. Sombra raised his spear above her head, Celestia let out a whimper. Luna darted forward, but stopped at the sound of Celestia's voice.
"Don't come any closer, please!"
"Sister! Fear no more, I shall save you!"
"I desire no help from you... monster"
Those words stopped Luna cold. She looked up in a daze to see that Sombra looked rather interested as well. He backed away, replacing his hoof with a crystalline band that pinned her sisters hooves to the floor instead. Luna walked forward sluggishly. "Wh- what didst thou just say, Sister? Surely you jest?"
As Luna edged closer to her sister, Celestia's agitation became more visible. She tried desperately to free herself, wincing in agony each time her broken leg flopped against the floor uselessly. "No stay away! I won't let your evil magic touch me!"
Luna drew back. "Evil? What are thou saying sister?"
Celestia seemed to spit the words, each one coated in poison. "I saw you tinkering with Sombra's dark heart sister. Dark heart, it only responds to dark magic, face it Luna, you and Sombra are the same."
Luna was appalled, why was Celestia acting like this? "No sister I would neve-"
Sombra seemed to grow tired of their debate, walking towards Celestia, he levitated his spear up, before bringing it back down onto her skull with a sickening crunch.
Luna stood there, mouth agape. from what was left of her sister's face, came writhing, black smoke. "Luna!" Bellowed Sombra, still in a daze, Luna ignored him. "Luna!" Sombra tried again, and again he was ignored. "Luna!" He shouted, but it was somehow with her sister's voice! "Luna!" She heard it again. It was definitely Celestia's. Then she noticed something strange, Sombra was just standing there, static. That was it, this had to be an illusion! Focusing her magic in her horn, she easily overpowered it. She didn't know how she hadn't noticed it before, and she didn't care. What mattered was that this meant her sister was alive.
As she broke free from the illusion and looked to her left, she spotted the once pristine, white coat of her sister, which was now marred with scratches and burns. Celestia was kneeling down, purple smoke trailing from her eyes. She was just quietly mumbling words: "No, Luna don't do this. You don't need to do this. It doesn't need to be this way." The words seemed to slur together as she said them faster and faster. Eventually she was shouting them to the sky. "No! Stop this madness, Luna. This magic is evil! It's destroying your sanity. Please, please just let me use the elements of harmony on you to fix you!"
Luna placed her hooves on Celestia's shoulders. "Sister! Sister, wake up! 'Tis but an illusion. Break free!"
Luna was so busy trying to fight off her sisters demons, she didn't even notice the ominous cloud of black smoke hovering behind her. Suddenly, two hooves shot out of the darkness, grabbing her and throwing her off the side of the tower. Quickly throwing her wings out and catching herself, Luna was unsurprised to see Sombra standing behind her. And for once in his life, he was smirking.
This was bad. Even when Sombra had been an equestrian diplomat, he had always been supernaturally calm, she could count on one hoof the amount of times she had seen him smile. To have him smirk now, in a battle where he should be losing badly, meant he had already won. Luna just didn't know it yet.
"Do ye see now, how hopeless of a fight this is for you and thine sister? Well, thine sister at least... but mayhaps not you." He said, donning a thoughtful expression.
"I have no need for your mind games, Sombra." Luna said, before charging him, and passing through the cloud of black smoke he left in his wake.
As he reappeared behind her, he spoke yet again: "Ye know of us, Luna. Thou knowest how much we respect strength and honour above pretty words and politicking."
He paused, seemingly to draw breath before continuing. "Thine sister is like that. Too many words, and not enough action. It made ill of me, hence why I left her service as an Equestrian diplomat. But you? You art Luna, Princess of the night, and I shall tell thee freely, with nary a charge nor toll, that thou deservest to rule more than your weakling of a sister."
Luna didn't answer him, she didn't need to. She just powered up her horn, arcane glyphs appearing in front of, and around, her. Sombra just stood there. Each glyph glowed with Luna's signature magic aura. And from them erupted each a thousand beams of starlight, rushing towards Sombra. "Now dark deceiver, witness my most powerful spell. Taste the night skies wrath!" All the "stars" hit Sombra, before seemingly just disappearing into his coat.
"No! This can't be!" Came Luna's shocked exclamation.
"Do ye see now, my Queen? We are the same, we art equals, one of us deserves to rule this land as much as the other." The Dark King said, his words cutting Luna more than any of his spells.
"I would never rule beside you, fiend." Luna seemed to whisper, her words still carrying in the still air at the top of the tower.
"Then, We shall regretfully have to add you to the mountain of corpses which maketh the staircase to Our throne." He gestured to Celestia, the purple and green smoke vanishing from her eyes as he did so. As she unsteadily rose to her hooves, Sombra bellowed: "Now, False-Gods, thou shouldst be afeard of my newest spell, Cower in dread as fire and brimstone rains from the sky! As your dynasty burns away, and as your lives are forgotten, buried under the ash from the bones of those who try to resist my rule!"
After his proclamation, the black clouds all around them opened up, and crystals rained down from them. Several of them shattered upon hitting the floor of the balcony, their broken shards scraping the alicorns back, legs, and chest, leaving thin, bloody marks behind. Rushing to her sister, Luna summoned a shield, protecting her and her sister from the deadly pointed projectiles.
Straining to keep the spell up Luna allowed Celestia to lean on her as support. The shield above them shuddered with each impact. As the sun princess stood on her own two hooves, her telltale magic glow issued from her horn, adding it to Luna's shield. Now the crystals that impacted it merely spun off to the side. Sombra, upon seeing that his attack wasn't working, raised his right forehoof, causing the clouds to return to normal, and to stop raining crystals.
Banishing the shield with a thought, Luna struck out with several astral projectiles, each of which was seemingly absorbed by the dark king. "Luna." Called her sister, "Gather the elements while I cover you! We must use them if we are to have any hope of defeating Sombra." The dark king heard this and flew into them at breakneck speed. He reared up on his hind legs, before shooting several bolts of dark magic at the older alicorn. Which were skillfully deflected. Sombra re-conjured his spear, using it to block a barrage of golden magic, which detonated harmlessly, still six meters away from his face.
The elements of harmony. Both sisters had entered the towertop with them at their sides, yet during the battle they had scattered like bowling pins. Luna spotted two by the entrance, scooping them up, she continued on. She saw Generosity lying a few feet in front of her, it joined the rest. She saw the three elements her sister was carrying in a pile, near where Celestia was struck by Sombra's "worst fear" spell. Pivoting on the spot, the moon princess galloped back to her sister's side, returning just in time to block several of Sombra's spear strikes. Sombra surged at them, his body wreathed in purple flames, he was quickly repulsed by a burst of golden magic, then quickly fixed in place by both Celestia and Luna's magical aura's.
Luna threw her sister her respective elements, They both took up position. The sisters alicorn levitated into the air, manes upheld by some unseen force. Their eyes opened, white light pouring from them. Seeing this, Sombra increased his struggles immensely, desperately trying to get free from the cocoon of golden and turquoise magic.
Then everything went wrong.
Celestia's elements stopped spinning entirely, wheras Luna's spun faster and faster, before shooting straight up into the air. As the princesses fell to the ground, the golden-turquoise shell around Sombra shattered. Allowing him to take to the sky in his shadow form once again. Whilst the sisters looked about in horror, Sombra chuckled before proclaiming: "We knew that thou wouldst try to use thine elements on us, Princesses. Yet how can thou wieldest 'the elements of harmony' when ye cannot agree whether thou should use them on Us in the first place?" He let out another deep laugh, before turning around, away from the alicorn sisters, and looking into the approaching sunset. He gazed at it for a few seconds, before turning around and coming face to face with two very angry alicorns.
Luna; who had been exposed to centuries of torment in one near lethal blast, stood beside her sister, defiant glares on both of their faces. Celestia; who had lost all of her armour, and had innumerable cuts, burns and bruises all along her body. As Sombra took them in he noticed their narrowed eyes, their heads that were bent slightly forward. They weren't just angry, they were furious. 'Good.' he thought.
The elements once more levitated into the air, blazing with a rainbow of colours, Luna and Celestia followed them up, their manes radiating with pure astral power. Their eyes opened, pure magic seeped out of them. The elements each shot out a streak of polychromatic light, heading straight for Sombra. Who was standing stock still.
The rainbow was inches away from Sombra's muzzle before a massive explosion shook the tower. The detonation had so much power that the elements shook in place, before falling to the ground inert. As the sisters gracefully flew down from their perch in the sky. They could see right in front of them, where Sombra had been looking just a few minutes ago, was an enormous plume of bright green smoke, framed by the setting sun. Luna yelled out: "Sombra! What did you just do!?"
The king looked her in the eyes before saying: "We aren't to blame my Queen, 'tis your court magus, Starswirl."
This time it was Celestia who did the shouting. "Sombra What did you do to him!?"
"He has come to no harm fair Celestia... yet." He idly polished his armour with a hoof before continuing. "If he does not feel the embrace of light magic before sundown, he will die. And all the magic in his system will be released in a violent chain reaction that will decimate that gaudy castle of yours, and the surrounding villages too." He turned his head once more to see the sun was halfway down already. "You don't have much time Celestia."
At this Celestia actually barked a laugh. "You think me a fool, Sombra? There are many light users in my castle, and many who will be able to fix him."
"Oh, We must be forgetting things in Our old age, We meant to say that the unicorn who heals him will have to do it by transferring their lifeforce directly. 100 years worth of their lifeforce. So, unless thou hast anymore immortal citizens in thine city, We suggest you go."
Celestia grit her teeth before flexing her wings and taking off, hovering several feet above the air. Before stopping when Sombra called out.
"Aren't thou going to spare a second for thy sister? You are leaving her to fight me all alone after all!"
Celestia paused there in the air a moment, like a puppet with it's strings cut off. Then flashed Luna a weak smile and zoomed off.
Luna tensed up, ready to enter battle again, but Sombra just raised his hoof, causing her to still, with a puzzled frown on her face.
"What is it, Sombra?" She questioned, still expecting the unveiling of some brand new master plan.
"Didst thou see what thine sister just did? She just abandoned you, to Us no less!" He allowed a sad frown/smile to adorn itself on his muzzle. "We didst not have a family, yet even We know that is simply wrong."
Luna retaliated with an angry outburst. "'Twas to save our kingdom, fiend! She wouldn't have had to do it were it not for you!"
Sombra just kept talking with the same, calm demeanour he had had during the entire fight.
"Exactly! 'twas for her kingdom! As long as thine sister sits upon the throne, her subjects will always come first! Thou shalt be pushed to the side like a spoilt child."
"Our subjects you mean."
"Hah! Since when have they been 'your' subjects!? They have all the fun during thine sisters day, and sleep away all of the night thou createst. Nary but one pony admires thine tapestry of the midnight sky each night."
"Well... I- What are you suggesting, I perform a coup on my sister!?" Luna laughed. "Ludicrous!"
Sombra nodded, his face grim. "Aye, 'tis ludicrous, yet so is the idea that ponies couldst be blood-kin and still push one another to the side!"
"What do you care, Sombra? Really!? What does it matter to you?"
"I never had a family!" Sombra bellowed, for once allowing his true rage to surface. "Until you and Celestia took me in, I was all alone!" He shook his head sorrowfully. "Forgive me if I didn't want to see that happen to my best friend!"
Luna froze. "Sombra..." She let out in a low whisper. "I had no idea. I mean-"
Sombra cut her off. "I grew up around you two, and then when I became a diplomat I was so happy! All I could think about was how it would make you proud. But all that really happened was I could look underneath all the politics in the castle and see the rotting, festering truth. That Celestia is a tyrant! I couldn't be tainted by my association with her any longer. So I fled, I came here, and used my abilities as a diplomat to build this city. And the rest, is history as Celestia will tell it."
Luna faced the 'dark' king, whose coat seemed to be paler than it had ever been. "I never really thought about it, but you're right. My sister is a tyrant. She alters history to suit her needs. Yet through all of it, she has always done the best for us. Please Sombra, come back."
Sombra's expression twisted into a rictus of bittersweet longing and pure agony. "No. It is too late for that, it is too late for reconciliations." As his coat grew darker, and the amulet on his chest glittered, he ascended into the air once more. His horn glowed with his signature dark magic, before he summoned his spear yet again. He slammed it down into the ground, only avoiding Luna because she dodged at the last minute. She yelped as he quickly jabbed at her, blocking his attack with a dark blue shield, before having to summon another one to block the overhead swing he threw at her.
"Sombra! Please stop this madness! It's not too late!" Luna yelled, her desperation increasing as Sombra's spear ripped through a small part of her wing.
"There is no Sombra! Only the darkness!" The dark king yelled, yet again jabbing at her with the spear, and actually scoring a light hit against her chest.
"Then I am truly sorry for what I must do." Luna finished off. Gathering her magic, she let out a tremendous sonic spell that blasted Sombra off the top of the tower, he quickly turned into his smokeform, only to be confronted with the sight of Luna wielding the elements, tears running down her face. "I'm so sorry." She said, before she closed her eyes and everything went white.
If Luna had kept her eyes open, she might have seen Sombra smile, horn glowng briefly, a faint crimson hue surrounding it. Before the gem on his chest glowed brighter than it ever had, as the rainbow of doom struck him.
She opened her eyes. All she saw on the ground in front of her was silver armour, ashes, a crown made of cold iron accentuated with bloodstones, and the slightly warm alicorn amulet. Which melted a puddle in the snow around it. Wait- snow!? She spun around rapidly, all she saw was endless snow drifts extending into the distance. The crystal empire, the balcony they fought on, the crystal heart, even the crystal ponies. All... gone.
She sat back on her haunches, stunned by the magnitude of Sombra's final plan. She remembered his words at the beginning of the fight.
"Ye dare to come unto mine kingdom and threaten to taketh what is, by birthright, rightfully mine?"
They had wanted to take his kingdom, so he took it from them, even in death. A sorrowful grin split itself across her muzzle, as the tears leaking down her cheeks began to solidify into ice.
It was done. Celestia had just given the official report to the press. As Luna lay in her bed she idly thought back to it. Sombra was declared mentally insane, a dictator, and a practitioner of necromancy. All records of him being an EquestrIan diplomat were removed. 'Was it fair?' She thought. 'That such an individual could change the truth to make themselves look better? No it wasn't' she decided, but what could she do about it? To speak out against her sister would undermine her trust. There was no way she could do anything. With the matter settled, Luna snuggled into her opossum doll even more before trying to get to sleep. She couldn't do it. She recalled Sombra's words:
'And the rest, is history as Celestia will tell it.'
She levitated her bed covers off of herself and looked out the window of her room at the Castle. Below her she could see the little cottages and houses all her little ponies lived in. There were no candle flames, nor lights from a unicorn's horn. Every pony was completely and utterly asleep. She gazed up at her night sky, she had took special care in constructing it tonight, yet did it matter if nopony was around to see it?
She wondered if Sombra was talking about himself when he mentioned that only one pony watches the night sky. She felt a light blush creep up her cheeks, before she sighed and lay back into bed, yes, the way her sister ruled wasn't morally correct, but she couldn't just kill her off... not for injustices that she alone suffered. Yet... it wasn't just her was it? Sombra, Discord, the sirens, they had all been mistreated. Luna decided, right then and there... If nopony else stood up to her sister, she'd have to be the one to do it. For Sombra.
In the middle of the frozen wastes, the name given to where the Crystal Empire used to be, an amulet lay on the ground, discarded, in a pile of now boiIing water. Slowly a squirrel edged towards it, before it darted a paw out and grabbed it. It's eyes glazed over with red. And the soul within the amulet let out a booming laugh.
That squirrel would carry it two miles, before dying of starvation, it would then be picked up by a hawk, then a deer, then a rat, until it came to rest in a counter inside a magical curiosity shop. It would stay there for a thousand years, when it would be put on by a great and powerful unicorn, and Sombra would rise again, even more powerful than before. Sombra knew that because Discord had told him so, and he never lied. He may twist the truth a bit, but the Spirit never lied. He may have technically failed to fulfill his side of the bargain, but Discord was merciful. Sombra would return, and even his shadow would blot out the sun.
In the Royal Canterlot Gardens there stood a statue, nopony really ever came near it. Those who did complained that they felt like they were being watched, and that their legs turned to jelly. As the last of the visitors left, and the royal guards closed the gates, nopony was there to see a slight red glow in the shape of a cross appear on the chest of a statue, before it cracked and crumbled to dust. The red sparks hit the floor, before seemingly vanishing into the ground.
Those sparks circled the Earth, searching for their prey, before pouncing upon it with a triumphant shout.
Where did the sparks go? I'll tell you.
Amethyst Lulamoon was a unicorn mare, married to the incredibly talented mage Starswirl, who was currently in hospital after Sombra's artifact infected him with wormwood rot. Amethyst Lulamoon was also two months pregnant at this time, as she sat next to her sleeping husband, she brushed her hoof against the metal on the chair, before withdrawing it sharply when she felt the small twinge of an electric shock. Little did she know, that 'small shock' was something far more sinister. The spark travelled through her body, until it found what it was looking for.
Her unborn foal.
It leapt into the foal's body, altering its DNA that was still being configured. Yet it only made one change.
Every unicorn born from that child or one of it's descendants would be useless at magic, all the way down to one Trixie Lulamoon. If the spark had a mouth, it would've been chuckling. Also, a couple bits of trivia:
The "slight red glow in the shape of a cross appear on the chest of a statue," bit, was a reference to the saying: "Cross my heart and hope to die." Which is used to solidify a promise. The symbol crumbling meant that Sombra had broken the deal.
Everything is kept really vague intentionally. From Sombra's deal with Discord, to how the sirens were mistreated, the idea is that you (the reader) come up with your own ideas.
