The Best There Is
Misunderstandings
Previous ChapterNext ChapterWolverine stopped, leaning a hand upon the bark of a tree. "Well, I'll be." he muttered. Despite the darkened night sky, he was able to make a small town out in the distance. He sniffed again, "Whatever this thing is, it came here. Hopefully nothin' too bad happened." he said quietly to no one in particular.
Unknown to him, two ponies were behind him, having caught up to the one that hurt them earlier.
Walking forward a bit more, Logan clenched his fists, hiding his claws to avoid any immediate conflict, 'But if they're like the ponies I met earlier, I'll probably be met with hostility anyway...' his mind paused, remembering how mutants and certain superheroes were treated on Earth, 'So, nothin' outta the ordinary then.'
"I smell more horses. And blood." Wolverine pointed out in a mumble. "Somethin' definitely happened. Gonna get some answers one way or another somehow." he added. The town was quiet and the outside was empty, no doubt ponies were trying to get rest at this hour. But Logan couldn't rest, not when he had a mission.
He got to knee, getting a closer look at the floor. He saw small droplets of red in the darkness. "Hm. Looks lethal, but not enough to do any killing blows. Should know. Done plently." he reminded himself, placing a hand on the red spot on the dimly-lit grass. 'Seems this is recent, like the bodies I found. Whoever did this had a busy day.' he thought, closing his eyes for a moment.
The human stood up, "I ain't gonna get answers standin' here. I gotta sort things out soon before someone else gets hurt." he looked around the empty town, which he was glad for, "Now, where the hell do I go? My best chances are I'm probably gonna get attacked fer bein' different looking or somethin'. The worst is probably befriendin' these things. Dunno why honestly."
Wolverine tilted his head, seeing something tower over the rest of the town. "The hell is that?" he asked himself bluntly. It was a crystal tree looking shaped building, it shining in the dark night sky underneath the stars. "Uh huh." was all he said, gritting his teeth in genuine wonder, "Looks like that's the best option."
He lowered his cowl like one would with a hood and trekked forward. After a bit, he reached the doors. 'Some entrance. These doors look like they could fit Banner when he's the friendly giant.' he thought. Relunctantly, he raised his fist and slammed it on the door as hard as he could, secretly hoping that no one would answer.
Unfortunately, the door creaked open. Standing on the opposite end was a small drake. "Huh?" his eyes widened upon seeing Wolverine's face. His breathing intensified to panting almost instantly. Logan tilted his head, wondering what was happening. "You? B-But Twilight sent y-you away!" he gulped in a panic.
Logan creased a brow, "The hell you talkin' about?" he questioned the dragon. "I just got here--"
"TWILIGHT!"
Wolverine put a hand to his head, "So much for no hostilities." he muttered, knowing that he was about to fight. He put his arms to his sides and watched as a purple pony with wings and a horn walked out, just as surprised to see him.
"You? I-I thought you were on the other side of Equestria! How many others have you hurt or killed on the way?" Twilight asked, clearly in a mild panic that would just get worse like with Spike.
Shaking his head, Wolverine growled, "Calm the hell down. I did no such thing. I just got here. This dragon kid or whatever just panicked. Trust me, I was already pissed off once, ya don't want to have me repeat myself. It won't be pretty." he warned.
"You can talk?" Twilight asked.
"I was gonna ask ya the same thing." Wolverine muttered with his arms folded in a sarcastic tone. "Now, do ya trust me?" he wondered.
"Princess Twilight! Oh no!" yelled a stallion, panting as he and his partner neared the castle, bruises seen on their bodies. "We found you at last, strange creature." they both yelled.
Twilight faced Logan with a scowl, "Do you know them?" she asked the X-Man, who ignored her.
'Son of a bitch.' mused Wolverine, 'I thought I lost 'em back in the forest. Seems they followed somehow.' he shook his head, "Kinda had a tough run-in with them."
"You don't understand, Princess! He killed our friends and attacked us with no reason!" one of them pleaded. "We chased him to warn anypony else before he slaughters again!"
"Is this true?" Twilight growled, seeing the bruises and cuts on their faces that proved their truthfulness.
Wolverine snarled, "I didn't kill their friends. I found 'em the same time as--" he stopped speaking.
Because, out of nowhere, Wolverine felt a stinging sensation on his stomach, launching him across the field a bit. He coughed, smoke seen coming from his costume. Twilight unfurled her wings, "I knew you were the same creature we fought earlier." she took a slow step and acknowledged the other ponies, "Go, you two. Thank you for warning me." she thanked.
Wolverine stood up, now clearly pissed off. "Just once, I'd like to show up in a different world and not have to fight every fucking thing standing in my way." he rubbed his neck and stretched it, cracking sounds heard with each movement of his head and he faced the alicorn. "Just fucking once."
"Be careful, Twi. You want me to get the others this time?" Spike asked nervously, leaning on the door.
Twilight shook her head, "No, Spike. I can take care of this." she assured her assistant, who slowly nodded.
"Okay, bub. Now ya asked fer it. I tried doin' things the easy way, but..." Wolverine revealed his claws and only one sound came out as he prepared to fight once again.
SNIKT!
Twilight frowned, "The same claws as before. You hurt my friends with those." she looked to the covered scratch marks from earlier. "I'll make sure you never use them like that again."
Wolverine smirked, "That a threat, pony? Didn't think you were capable honestly."
Stomping a hoof on the grass, Twilight huffed, "Just stop! I'm giving you one chance, leave or I'll resort to... lethal methods."
"I ain't leavin' until you give me answers." Logan hissed, deciding to stand his ground. He raised his cowl as he continued talking, "I don't want to do this. But I'm not askin' to be yer friend either."
Twilight closed her eyes, "Very well. I gave you a chance. I'll send you even farther than before!" she threatened. She shot more magic at Wolverine.
"...That hurt." Logan muttered the lie, falling on his back. He got to his feet instantly and smirked, "Gonna have to try and do harder than that, pony."
Hiding nearby were some strange ponies, eyeing their target from a group of bushes hiding in front of trees in a nearby forest, using binoculars to get a closer look. "There he is. Quite a specimen, isn't he?" the one in the coat asked, having heard the story of what occurred in Ponyville hours ago.
"Indeed." the other muttered, holding a small blade in his mouth. He wore a vest "Word got out quite fast from Ponyville. This... Wolverine will make quite the prey to kill. I must thank you for bringing me here."
"Should we send him to the Ring now?" the scientist asked.
The hunter shook his head, "Not yet. I wish to study him first. We shall examine his abilities, his skills. Then he will prove to be be the perfect warrior for the Ring. But I wish for him to fall by my hand. The game shall begin soon enough my apprentice. This Wolverine will feel the wrath of a hunter."
The hunter and scientist went back to watching the fight, the two of them swapping the binoculars. There would come a time soon enough. The Wolverine was being evaulated, tested, unknowingly. The hunter smirked, satisfied by what he was seeing so far in the battle.
This prey would be the best yet.
