Meeting the Family

Previous Chapter

Twilight was in full blown panic mode. This had been a day she had been dreading for a while and had made at least fourteen different checklists in preparation for it. She was reviewing the latest list for the fourth time, when a mulberry hand entered her field of view, booping her on the nose, derailing her train of thought.

"Twilight," Cheerilee smiled. "You okay, hon?"

"Y-yeah," Twilight replied, rolling up her checklist, and placing it in her back pocket. "Just... thinking."

"More like over-thinking," Cheerilee chuckled, kissing her marefriend on the forehead. "You spent the entire train ride over here 'thinking'. Are you sure you're ready for this?"

"No," Twilight sighed. "But, I don't think I'll ever be. We're here, anyway, so I think it's too late to back out." she said, gesturing at a cozy , purple home. The two of them approached the front door, Twilight raising her hand, preparing to knock. She hesitated, before lowering her hand back down to her side

Cheerilee grabbed her lover's hands. "Everything's going to be all right, Twilight," she said, reassuringly.

"But what if it's not?" Twilight asked, distressed. "What if they don't like that I'm dating another mare? What if they find out about the you-know-what? Worst of all, what if they don't like you?!"

"Twilight, you know two out of those three things absolutely will not happen," Cheerilee said, giving her marefriend a reassuring kiss on the cheek. "Now, do you want to knock, or should I?"

"No, I think it's best if I do this," Twilight said, once again raising her hand to knock. Taking a breath to steel herself, she rapped thrice upon the door.

Almost immediately, the door swung open, revealing the smiling face of Night Light. "Twilight!" he exclaimed, excitedly, pulling his daughter in for a hug. "How's my favorite princess doing?"

"I'm fine, Dad," Twilight murmured as she pulled away from the hug. "This is Cheerilee..." she continued, not meeting her father's gaze. "She's the special somepony I was telling you about... I hope you like her..."

"Oh, Twilight," Night Light replied. "I'm sure we're going to love her," he said, before turning his attention to the mare in question. "Hello, I'm Night Light, Twilight's father," he said, shaking his daughter's marefriend's hand, before ushering the two inside.

"Twilight? Is that you, honey?" Twilight Velvet rushed out of the kitchen with open arms, pulling Twilight Junior into a tight hug punctuated with a peck on the cheek. When she pulled away from her daughter, she quickly turned to Cheerilee. "Hi, I'm Twilight Velvet. You must be this special somepony she said she wanted to introduce us to, miss..."

"Cheerilee," the mulberry mare replied, offering a handshake, which was ignored in favor of a hug.

"Dinner will be ready in about fifteen minutes," Velvet said, turning around to head back into the kitchen. "Shining's in the dining room, setting the table. He'll want to see you two."

Not even giving them the opportunity to leave, Shining Armor strode in. He quickly hugged his LSBFF, giving her mane a tussle, before turning to Cheerilee, trying his best to look intimidating. "So," he said, sternly. "You're the pony my sister is dating. Well, I'll have you know that just because you're a mare, doesn't mean I'm going to give you any sort of leniency. My sister is not your conquest, and you will treat her like the princess that she is. Do you understa-"

"Oh, Shining, you can stop with the overprotective big brother act," a serene voice interrupted his tirade. Princess Cadence exited the kitchen, a small alicorn foal clutched tightly in her arms. "Hello, I'm Cadence, Twilight's sister-in-law. I see my husband was introducing himself," she greeted, extending a hand to Twilight's marefriend.

"Cheerilee," the mare replied, taking the offered handshake. "Who's this?" she asked, smiling at the adorable little foal, who stretch her little arms out to the friendly looking stranger.

"Flurry Heart, Twilight's niece," Cadence replied. "Would you like to hold her?"

"I would love to."

...

The mood around the Apple family's dinner table was tense and awkward. For a while now they had been worried that Applejack would never bring home a special somepony, and they had been ecstatic to find out she finally found one. However, when they found out she had another...

"Soooooo," Apple Bloom said, breaking the silence. "Two coltfriends?" Caramel and Soarin exchanged nervous glances.

"Eeyup," Applejack said, shoveling food into her mouth, trying to ignore the awkward atmosphere.

"Well, good fer you!" Granny Smith beamed. "That jes' means even more great-grandfoals to carry on the farm. Not to mention all th' fun that comes with having two hot pieces of stallion in yer bed."

"Granny, please," Applejack whined, covering her ears, her face turning a fluorescent crimson, which her two hot pieces of stallion also wore.

"Oh, nonsense, sugarcube," Granny continued, waving dismissively at her granddaughter's embarrassment. "Gettin' some action from a pair o' hunks ain't nothin' to be 'shamed of. Speakin' o' which," she said, nudging Big Mac in the ribs. "When're you bringin' somepony home?"

...

Dinner with Pinkie's family was going just fine, for the most part. They had decided to serve rock soup for dinner, which was... interesting. Cloudy Quartz and Igneous, Pinkie's parents, were both polite and seemed to like Harshwhinny, a feeling which the businessmare felt was mutual. Pinkie had already introduced her marefriend to Maud, and the two were already on friendly terms. Marble was a tough Pie to crack, barely speaking and preferring to hide behind her mane, but Harshwhinny didn't think there would be any problems between the two of them.

Then Limestone had offhandedly referred to her sister and her lover as "dykes". Now Harshwhinny and Limestone were standing, staring each other down, silently daring the other to make the first move, while the rest of the Pie clan just stared, exchanging worried glances, anxious that a fight would break out.

A smirk spread across Limestone's face. "You look ready to kick my flank," she said, in a cocky manner, returning to her seat. "Good. Pinkie deserves somepony who will stand up for her. Glad my sister's dating someone like you, Harshwhinny."

The table breathed a sigh of relief. It seems like the two of them would be getting along, after all.

...

Redheart was relieved to find that Fluttershy's parents were far easier to talk to than her marefriend. The conversation flowed easily, with her marefirend's parents taking a great interest in her career and personal life. The two of them were very polite and pleasant to talk to, and Redheart was very happy to have finally convinced Fluttershy to let her meet her parents. The same could not be said for her brother, however.

"So, a nurse, huh?" Zephyr Breeze inquired. "Do you wear that iconic little outfit, when you work?"

"Yes," Redheart replied, matter of factly. "It is the standard uniform style used throughout Equestria, though I do wear a more practical pair of scrubs when assisting the doctors with more intense operations."

"That's hot," Zephyr said, leaning back in his chair. "I wonder if I could convince my Dashie to wear a nurse's outfit."

Redheart groaned.

"Um, about that..." Fluttershy started.

...

"Oh, sweet Celestia and Luna!" Rainbow Dash moaned, blushing, hunched over, and trying to avoid eye contact with everypony in the room. "Why did I let you talk me into this?"

Rarity was in a similar position. "I don't know, darling," she replied. "I just thought it was the right time to meet each other's families, officially, as a couple."

"Yeah, but why the hay did we think doing both at the same time was a good idea?"

Hondo Flanks, Cookie Crumbles, Windy Whistles, and Bo Hothoof heard none of their daughters' conversation, as the two sets of parents eagerly gushed about how cute their children were as little fillies.

Usually, meeting your lover's parents means you get to fawn over baby pictures and listening to awkward childhood stories, while laughing at your special somepony's embarrassment, before they inevitably get to do the same to you, when your time comes. Doing both sets of parents at the same time yields all of the negatives and none of the benefits.

When they had received an invite to meet their daughter's special somepony, Windy and Bo had decided to bring no less than a dozen photo albums, chronicling their Number One Winner's life from her first nap all the way to early middle school, when she had those incredibly dorky and embarrassing braces (late middle school through the day she finally moved out would be brought to the next get together). Since dinner was being held at Hondo and Cookie's place, they had unlimited access to every single baby picture, crayon drawing, and macaroni art.

"Oh, you two will love this," Windy beamed, pulling out a scrapbook with a large jack-o-lantern on the cover. "Dashie had just the cutest costumes every Nightmare Night."

"Wait just a minute," Hondo replied, getting up from the table. "I'm gonna go find our Nightmare Night photos."

"Celestia, kill me now," Rainbow and Rarity begged.

Their prayers went unanswered.

Author's Note

Sorry this took so long. Got halfway through a chapter, then my old computer died, and I lost everything. Then work got in the way. Then I got writer's block while trying to rewrite that chapter. Then I had a new chapter idea. Then I got writer's block halfway through that chapter. Then I had some other ideas for different stories (thanks for getting 2/3 of those featured). Then I realized that I had written quite a bit of clop and wanted to write something a bit more fluffy. Plus, I hate how I left you guys hanging after a year and a half. Part way through the next two chapters, so hopefully not long until the next update.
