Not so long ago, in the gloomy town of Sunny Falls, ME, there once lived a handsome eighteen-year-old named Jake Arbor. Taking one look at Jake, you’d mistake him for a movie star or a pop icon. His smooth, boyish face, a gleaming smile, short black hair, tall, broad stature. You would think Jake had it all, but in fact, he had nothing.

He was only a junior, having failed the 7th grade when he was younger, and had to repeat it. He once had three friends, but lost them two of them to suicide. His mother wasn’t around much and his father was too busy with his new wife to pay any attention to him. He had a girlfriend a couple years ago who took his virginity, but she cheated on him a week later with his last remaining, living friend. Even Jake’s three cats, the closest things he could get to family, slowly died of unknown causes. One, by one, by one.

Everyone at school thought he was a bit of a freak as well. He was a brony, a male fan of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. The ponies were the only thing keeping him going at this point. He only lived to see new episodes of the show and attend BronyCon in New York City every year. But now, in the summer of 2012, it was a dark time for every brony. Season two of the show was over and it would be three more months until episodes started again.

Jake had it worse, though. He had been arrested just a month ago for murder. He did not commit the crime. He wasn’t at the crime scene or even knew who the victim was. He knew he was being framed but couldn’t prove it to police, who were all but certain Jake was the perpetrator. Little did Jake know, a student at his high school was the actual killer who decided one night to kill a random old woman. The student thought it would be hilarious to frame Jake for the murder. Jake’s suffering was his entertainment. Because of this investigation, however, Jake had to remain in the state of Maine and could not attend BronyCon.

Jake was distraught. He refused to fall into a life of drug and alcohol abuse, but instead fell into a deep depression. He ate any food he could get his hands on. Most of the time he wasn’t hungry, or even like the taste of the food he was eating, but he kept on eating. A large snack every hour for 12 hours a day. Jake often wanted to cry about everything, but couldn’t. He just spent his time eating and watching old My Little Pony episodes on Netflix. He’d sometimes get headaches from, well, Jake couldn’t pinpoint what was actually causing them. Between the overeating and the lack of sleep and the extensive amount of TV, he didn’t know.

Jake was at his wits end. He wanted to die. He never did have the courage to kill himself the handful of other times he attempted, and now was no different. He just wished there was a completely painless or at least blissful way to die. He wanted to leave this world behind him. He didn’t know how many more episodes of Man Vs. Wild or Doctor Who he could take before he lost his mind completely. He wasn’t very religious, but he prayed to his goddess, Princess Celestia, a magical alicorn princess from the My Little Pony universe, for relief from this treacherous life.
