The Travelers

After about 5 miles of running, Pinkie and Jake figured they were far enough away from the apartment to slow down and casually walk down Interstate 95. The interstate was pretty quiet. Not many people came up as far as the area that Sunny Falls resided in. Only people Jake had ever seen on this road were tourists headed into Canada from all over the New England area.

There hadn’t been a single car the whole time he was with Pinkie, but suddenly, Jake heard the sound of an engine over the horizon. He looked up and saw a small family sedan in the distance and stopped dead in his tracks. Realizing that a passerby spotting the talking pink pony with him could cause worldwide panic, or even worse, involvent from the government, Jake panicked trying to find a place to hide her. With the fear of Pinkie being captured by the CIA and having all kinds of experiments and tests run on her becoming more and more a reality as the car sped towards them, Jake saw no way out. Pinkie carelessly and happily skipped forward, with a wide smile on her face. Jake’s only hope at keeping Pinkie from being seen was for her to get behind him. He darted in front of the pony as he saw the car approach close enough to see that it was a mid-2000s Honda Civic with a green Vermont license plate on the front bumper. Jake was happy that it wasn’t a cop. As the car came closer, it slowed down. The driver obviously saw Jake and was curious as to why he was walking down the highway. Jake took a big gulp as the silver Honda pulled up and stopped beside him. The driver rolled down his window and Jake finally got a glimpse of the person filling him with terror for the past minute and a half.

The driver looked to be in his late 20s to early 30s. He was skinny, average height, and light in complexion. His hair was brown and curly and he had a happy yet somewhat kooky and geeky demeanor. On his red shirt there was a crude, chaotic, pencil-drawn design of a stick figure with glasses. The tattoo of a child’s rendition of a wizard casting a spell on his right arm confirmed Jake’s suspicion that he was indeed geeky. The driver also wore light brown, almost tan, khaki shorts and a differently colored Converse shoe on each foot; one purple, one blue.

“Hi,” the driver said. “Are you, lost or something?” Jake hadn’t prepared a response for this situation. He couldn’t tell the man that he was running from a succubus that was going to kill him and a demon that was going to eat his dead flesh. That would just get him a one way trip to the nuthouse, making it that much easier for the Demonata to catch up. Before Jake could respond, Pinkie popped out from behind him suddenly and responded for him. “Hi!” Pinkie said to the driver as she waved frantically at the man in the Honda. Jake just stood in shock. He couldn’t believe that Pinkie just threw herself out there at a stranger like that. Well, then again, what should he have expected. She’s Pinkie Pie, the most random pony in all of Equestria. Jake’s worst fears were running through his head and it seemed like time slowed down for a moment. Jake felt his heart skip a couple beats at the thought of losing Pinkie to a SWAT team with tear gas and M16s. The drivers response stunned Jake even more than he could have anticipated, though.

“Pinkie! It’s been too long!” the driver said. Jake just stood there, dazed and confused, his gaze darting between Pinkie Pie and the Honda driver, unable to process the event transpiring. The driver got out of his car, knelt down, and hugged Pinkie. “I know! Were ya surprised?! Were ya?! Were ya?!” Pinkie asked frantically as she jumped around the man. “Indeed I was!” the driver responded. Pinkie took her place beside the stranger and turned to Jake, realizing an explanation was needed before Jake’s brain melted. “Jake, this is Chris. I met him when he was just a little younger than you!”

Chris reached his hand out to Jake for a handshake, which Jake returned his own with, and then proceeded to continue the story of his relationship with Pinkie. “Twilight Sparkle came to me when I was about fifteen and told me about the Demonata and their plans to take over Brattleboro. She brought me back to Ponyville to connect with the Royal Equestrian Army to plan an defense strategy and to keep me safe from Lord Loss. While in Ponyville, I met Pinkie. I havn’t seen her since the day I left with Twilight to save Brattleboro. I guess fate wanted us to meet again, huh Pinkie.” “Mhmm!” Pinkie said with a smile. Everything made sense to Jake now and he was actually able to move. “Ok, but I just have one question. Who is Lord Loss?” Pinkie and Chris looked at each other with obvious signs of fear. It looked like Jake had unleashed memories in Pinkie’s mind that she wasn’t comfortable talking about, so Chris was the one who ultimately decided to answer the question. “He’s the leader of the Demonata. His power is equivalent to, or maybe even greater than that of the Lucifer that the bible talks of. He’s one of the most frightening creatures you will ever see. Pale red skin that cracks and bleeds profusely whenever he twists it. Six arms, and no legs. He just, kinda hovers. Like a ghost. I hope you never have to see him because if you do, he will haunt you for years. It took me 15 years to come to terms with my encounter with him.”

Jake now understood why Pinkie didn’t want to talk about Lord Loss, but it seemed Chris now had some questions of his own. “So what are you two doing out here?” Jake now felt comfortable telling the truth. “I made a stupid request for Celestia to kill me and now, long story short, Cadaver is designing a succubus to come hunt me down, seduce me, and kill me.” “We were headed to see if Kraff could help!” Pinkie responded as she trotted back over to Jake. “And you’re planning on walking there?” Chris asked. “I know seemed a bit ridiculous to me too,” Jake mumbled under his breath. “Well, I was on my way to see a Strokes concert in Quebec but, to hell with it. We’ve got demons to stop! Hop in!” Chris opened up the door to his Civic and got behind the wheel. Soon after, Jake opened up the backseat door on the left side for Pinkie. “After you, Pinkamina Diane Pie,” Jake said to the pony as he ushered her in with an inviting, gentleman-like arm gesture. The pony skipped over to the door and hopped inside. Jake followed suit and shut the door behind him. “Hang on! This is gonna be like something straight out of The Fast and the Furious! Chris floored the gas and took off down I-95. When he reached about eighty miles per hour, he stepped off the gas and rapidly jerked the emergency brake into place while making a hard left with the steering wheel, causing the car to start power sliding. Pinkie and Jake held on to each other screaming but, they were also smiling. Looking in his rearview, Chris could tell they were having fun. When the car had spun about one hundred and ten degrees, Chris turned off the emergency break and floored the gas again, causing the car’s momentum to make it slide another seventy degrees and face the direction it had been coming from. With the gas still floored, the Honda sped down the highway with Jake and Pinkie laughing in the backseat. They were on their way to New York City.
