Luna's Night Off
Midnight Frenzy
Load Full StoryAuthor's Note
Sorry for my lack of activity on the site. I've been busy with work. But rest assured that I'm not taking a break from my other stories, I've been working on those in what little free time I have. Worry not. I'll have chapter 2 of Harmony's Guardians up in a week or so, hopefully.
I heard this song from Duo Cartoonist and got hit by the inspiration to write this little chapter. I know it isn't very good, but I did make it up on the spot and wrote it in a couple hours.
I hope you enjoy it. And for those who haven't heard their song, I'll have the video below.

Midnight Frenzy
Luna watched as Aura lowered the sun. “That never gets old,” Luna said, before a hand patted her head. She turned around to see Scroll standing above her.
“Don’t worry, Lulu. You’ll get your chance one of these days. Who knows, you might even be able to raise and lower the moon, instead of me. Unless, of course, you would rather have the sun,” Blank Scroll explained, a knowing smirk on his muzzle. Cue in 3… 2… 1.
“NO!! I mean… I’d rather take the moon if I have a choice,” Luna responded, a bit of color shading her cheeks, as she looked away.
Luna looked back at Scroll and asked, “Why did you want to raise and lower the moon? Shouldn’t the older one of you get the sun?”
“Luna… I took the moon because I feel more in tune with the night. And because I want to be the guardian of those who sleep during the night hours. It’s quite the responsibility,” Scroll replied, as Aura walked up.
“Scroll, maybe you could raise the moon now? I wondered what you were doing over here,” She said, looking towards Luna, a small smile on her face. “Are you distracting your grandfather again, Lulu?”
“She’s doing no such thing, dear. She just likes watching the movements of the sun and the moon. Speaking of… Luna, do you want to watch me make the night sky tonight?”
Luna’s eyes widened and she hugged Scroll while saying, “Oh, yes please!”
Scroll laughed as Aura just rolled her eyes, smiling. “Well, let’s make this a gorgeous night then. I can’t disappoint my biggest fan, now can I?” Scroll asked.
Scroll’s horn lit up with a soft yellow glow as the moon began coming over the horizon. As it rose higher, Scroll threw out both of his arms and stars started to form in the sky. Some were bright, but others were dull. Color started to streak across the sky in sync with Scroll’s waving arms, creating pale purples, royal and light blues, and a bit of white where there were many stars. Before too long the night sky looked breathtaking with the three-quarter moon hanging in the sky.
“Whew, must say that’s my best work so far. What do you lady’s think?” Scroll asked as he turned towards his wife.
“Well, I think you didn’t have to go that overboard. But, it really does look beautiful,” Aura responded. “And what do you think of Grandpa Scroll’s night, Luna?”
Luna just stood there with stars in her eyes, literally. “It looks amazing, grandpa. The best night I’ve ever seen.” Luna turned towards Scroll with the largest grin on her muzzle.
“Careful, Lulu. Mustn’t give him more hot air than he already has,” another pony said, coming out of a nearby entryway.
The group of three turned towards the voice and Luna jumped at her. “Mom!”
“Hello, Artemis, dear. Isn’t the night court starting soon?” Aura asked, as Scroll crossed his arms, pouting.
“Hello, Luna. Don’t you have classes tonight?” Artemis asked, wrapping her arms around Luna. “No, mother. The night court was dropped back a couple hours tonight.”
Luna had a sour expression on her face at the mention of classes. “I don’t have classes tonight, it’s Saturday.”
“Not for a few more hours, Lulu. But I’m sure your flight teacher would understand. I’ll talk to her before going into Starshine,” Scroll said, casting a glance at Artemis.
Artemis, for her credit, just sighed. “I suppose one night wouldn’t hurt. Don’t cause too much trouble, though.”
Luna jumped around Scroll excitedly. “Thank you, grandpa! I won’t, mom. Bye now!” Luna shouted as she took off from the balcony, spreading her wings and flying over the town.
“That filly is such a handful,” Artemis said, shaking her head.
“Hey, now. She’s not as bad as your husband was at her age. She’s only fifteen, let her live in her childhood a little while longer,” Scroll replied, putting his arm around her. “Now why don’t you give your favorite father-in-law a hug, hmm?”
Artemis just laughed, returning the hug. “You’re my only father-in-law, so far.” My sister-in-law hasn’t married, yet.
“Well, even if the court doesn’t start for a while, I’d better go and make sure it’s all set up and ready. I’ll see you in the morning. Have a great night.” Artemis said, heading back into the castle.
Luna flew over town as she started to sing, spreading her arms out and twirling through the air. “As the sun light leaves and darkness brings along a starry sky…”
As she sang above the village of Starshine, a few of the nocturnal residence glanced upward. One thestral stallion smiled and called out. “It’s Princess Luna!” Others looked up as well, smiling and starting to join in on her song. “Eeeh Oooh Eh Oh Ha! Let’s go dance together under the moon light…”
Luna touched down in the middle of the village and talked with the other night citizens. “Hey guys, are you having a fantastic night so far?”
“You always know how to put a smile on our faces, Princess. How are your siblings doing?” Asked one of the older ponies in the square.
“Celly’s doing good, but isn’t as fun to be around early in the morning. And my brother is just boooring. I wish he would just play with us once in a while.” Luna responded while shaking the mares hand. “Oh, I’d better get back to the castle. Maybe Starswirl is awake. He might want to play.”
Luna jumped into the air, waving at the ponies gathered in the square. “Bye. See you tomorrow night!”
With that, Luna took off towards the castle. She started to sing again as she neared one of the towers. The night guard smiled as she passed overhead, some of them stomping their hooves on the ground in time to her words.
“Hey, Starswirl!” Luna called towards the tower. “Do you want to play?”
An older pony in his mid 90’s appeared on the balcony, looking down towards the base of the tower. “You are too young to be out late, Luna.”
Luna started to giggle and beckoned him down. “Loosen up and celebrate. The night is too beautiful to sleep it away.”
Starswirl opened his mouth to reply before hearing the guards on the grounds stomping their hooves to Luna’s previous song. “Hooves are banging on the floor! Luna, ponies are trying to sleep.”
Luna looked towards the guards and smiled. “That’s a nice beat, do some more!”
The guards that had been stomping let out a collective “Yaaay!” and got into the stomping again.
Luna opened her mouth, still smiling and began to sing again. “Eeeh Oooh Eh Oh Ha! I won’t let you sleep, come to party all night!”
As the guards began to sing as well, Starswirl just shook his head and sighed. “Maybe one night isn’t so bad. I’ll resume the lesson plan for Princess Celestia later.”
Starswirl teleported behind Luna and picked her up to place her on his shoulders. “Alright, let’s have your “Midnight Frenzy.” He said as he began stomping in time with the rest of the night guard.
On the balcony overlooking the courtyard, Blank Scroll, Shimmering Aura and Solaris stood looking down at Luna and Starswirl. “See? She’s doing just fine,” Scroll remarked.
Solaris had a smile on his face, seeing the enthusiastic energy of his daughter. “Well, maybe. And I haven’t seen Starswirl that happy outside of teaching Celestia about her magic. She’ll make a wonderful princess, they both will.”
