In an alternate Equestria, creatures of all types use magic as an energy source, but only the greatest practitioners can harness, bottle, and wield it as wizards. Twilight Sparkle is training to become one such practitioner, and is about to enter her final year as a student at the Celestial School of Spellcasting.

However, the political unrest in Equestria has begun bleeding into even its most tranquil corners. Since the disappearance of the Sun Princess, the kingdom has fallen into the hands of Lord Blueblood, an arrogant and greedy monarch who rules cruelly and, at best, haphazardly. A unicorn unable to perform magic, he has set about enslaving Equestria's greatest wizards to do his bidding, and help him keep control of "his" people.

When Twilight's beloved mentor, Headmistress Celestia, is ordered into the service of Blueblood, Twilight determines not only to free her, but to overthrow the tyrannical lord, once and for all. Faced with a long journey and daunting magical opposition, it seems her sharp wit, a mysterious dragon's egg, and a motley crew of bickering wizards once known as the Harmony Guild (long-since disbanded) are Twilight's- and Equestria's- last hope.
