Seeing Things Clearly for the First Time
Seeing Things Clearly for the First Time
Today was the day. The day she could finally get her operation. Derpy had woken up early so she could get there on time, she never understood why something like this had to happen at such an odd hour. Dinky would neeed a babysitter to look after her.. Her little muffin would be so surprised to see her mom after two days. Speaking of muffins, Derpy grabbed a muffin and headed out the door.
Derpy landed in front of the hospital doors, it wasn't her best landing, but after today, they would only improve. Derpy walked in the hospital to check in after popping the last of her muffin in her mouth. She was greeted by a mare at a desk, with a purple coat, and a red mane.
“Hello there, oh Derpy, It's you! Just sign your name here and you can take a seat over there.” Derpy signed and took her seat. She picked up a magazine with her hoof and began to read. Some of the words were fuzzy and appeared twice in other places. Derpy thought about how she'd be able to read things crystal clear, like a true Pegasus. Derpy put the magazine down and stared blankly out into space, she began to think about her life and everything she had been through up to this point, as she was thinking she slowly felt her eye slide out of place. “This is the last time that will ever happen to me,” Derpy thought. Her thoughts were interrupted by a brown stallion with a goldenrod mane. “Uh would a miss, Derpy Hooves please follow me?” He looked around and saw that she was the only other pony than the mare at the desk. “Oh, alright, please follow me,” he said.
Derpy got up and followed him to the O.R. Derpy was familiar with this room. Many of her crashes landed her here. Her medical bill would certainly shrink after this as well. She was lead to a chair by the doctor. His assistants were standing around the table conversing. They were slightly fuzzy, as she hadn't put her eye back in place. She never did that in front of other ponies after she heard a comment from a pony saying that she looked, 'retarded' when she did it.
“Miss Derpy, you're here today for your eye surgery, correct?” She nodded. “Alright, well I have to warn you, the experiment is slightly experimental, is that okay with you?” She nodded, whatever it took, she wanted to be over with this sight problem. “Alright, just lay down, and we can get started.”
She did as she was told, and the doctors placed a clear plastic mask over her face, and she drifted off into unconsciousness.
Derpy was flying. She was doing loop the loops, barrel rolls, and anything else she could imagine. She was doing them all perfectly. Her mail bag suddenly appeared on her back, she swooped down to the nearest house, opened their mailbox, did another loop the loop, delivered the mail and closed it with her back hoof on her way out. All without touching the ground. She took to the skies again with her mailbag suddenly gone, and saw Rainbow Dash calling to her. Derpy swooped down once more and touched down perfectly next to her. Rainbow Dash needed help repairing the town hall. Derpy was handed a beam of wood and held it up for Rainbow without dropping it or anything. Rainbow thanked her as she put in the last nail. Rainbow Dash started to look fuzzy again, something was wrong. The ground around her looked fuzzy, everything looked fuzzy. Derpy was suddenly falling. She tried to flap her wings, but they disappeared just like her mailbag. Derpy screamed and fell into blackness.
Derpy tried to blink her eyes, but she couldn't. “We've wrapped your eyes up, you won't be able to see for a while.” Derpy had heard that sentence before. It was the same sentence another doctor told her when she was young. She had gotten into a crash while flying. She had messed up her eyes, and a few days after the surgery, the doctors removed her bandages. She had looked into the mirror with horror, and after a few moments what her left eye did next only added to it. Her left eye slid out of place till it was clear to the top of her eye. She closed her eyes and began to cry, her parents tried to comfort her and the doctors told her they did the best they could. She cried herself to sleep that night. Derpy willed the memory away, now wasn't the time for that. She had new eyes thanks to these doctors, and in a few short days, she would be able to see the world anew.
Derpy was carted into a room. “Now, Miss Hooves. Your eyes are healing from the surgery, we'd like to ask you to not remove your bandages until we say so. That being said, We'll have someone waiting on your at your request to help you get through these next few days. “Hello Miss Hooves, My name is Bitsworth, I'll be here to help you.” Derpy nodded and said thank you to him and the doctors for their hard work.
A few days later
“Alright Miss Hooves, you can remove your bandages.” Derpy removed them slowly. The first thing she saw was the white bedsheets she was lying under. Then she saw the doctors surrounding her. She grabbed the nearest one and stared him in the face. After a few moments... Nothing. Her left eye didn't slide out of place a bit. She drew him into a bear hug. “I- I take it the operation was a success?"
She hugged him harder. guess“A-alright then... Crushing...” Derpy let go of him and looked around the room. Everything was so clear. The bedsheets, the paintings on the wall, the doctors around her. “Excuse me, is it okay for me to leave now?” Derpy asked. They told her she needed to take an eye exam, it would be short. She walked into a dark room with a lot of equipment and after an hour or two, she was lead back into the lobby to check out. “Alright Miss Hooves, It's a bit bright out today,” they told her. That didn't matter to Derpy. Derpy wanted to see sunlight properly.
After she checked out, Derpy was led outside. It was hot and bright. Just the way Derpy wanted it to be for this day. Celestia's sun would shine for her especially on this day. Derpy thought. Derpy looked up to the sky and took off, she tried a few tricks, tricks she couldn't do with her old eyes. She did them all flawlessly. Her landing was perfect as well. She thanked the doctors once more and was on her way home. Derpy unlocked her door, and saw her babysitter and Dinky laying there playing a game. Dinky ran up to her and embraced her in a hug. “Mommy I missed you so much! Where did you go mommy?” Dinky asked. “Mommy got her eyes fixed my little Muffin. Now they wont mess up anymore.” Derpy tapped her head, as that was something used to make her left eye slide out of place before. It didn't slide an inch. Dinky started jumping up and down around her. Derpy smiled. She knew that the other foals wouldn't make fun of her for having a funny looking mom anymore. “Mommy, does that mean you'll go with me to parent day at school?” “Of course my little muffin. But first we're going to see grandma and grand pappy first.” “YAY!” squealed the excited foal. Derpy paid and thanked the babysitter, and told Dinky to get her bags ready. Dinky reappeared a few minutes later with everything she was going to take with her. “Hop on my back my little muffin.” Derpy said. Dinky got on but questioned her first, “We won't crash this time mommy?” “No, not even once.” And with that, they took to the skies.
