Chapter 1: A little letter, and a big question
Twilight was looking through the books that Luna sent her. And one in particular kept catching her eye. It had a note on it that said;
Dear Reader,
Thank you for taking this book for it has given me many headaches over the years
~Luna
The note itself was puzzling. But its simplicity itself was really intriguing, its pages were bound together with metal rings instead of string. And its cover was more paper instead of the usual enchanted wood that covered almost every other book in the Library. The paper cover had a simple title and several Drawings around said title. On the back was a drawing of Luna and two fillies and a colt looking through a telescope together. She checked it for magic and only found a lock and a strong preservation spell on it.
‘What gave her the headache?’ Twilight thought in confusion.
She opened the book and on the other side of the front cover was;
Hello, if you are reading this and Fall of the Moon has not occurred then you need not worry you may stop reading at any time, but if Fall of the Moon has occurred then it may be too late to save us but if it isn’t then there is not much time you may be our only hope.
Curiouser and curiouser. She put the book down and wrote a letter to Princess Celestia asking what it would take to put a Preservation spell that would last till the end of time and beyond.
"Spike!” twilight called. And soon a small purple and green dragon walked in.
“Yeah Twi, what is it?” Spike asked in confusion. He was wearing his apron and chef’s hat and he smelled of Cake. earlier Pinkie Pie asked Spike to help her in the Castle’s Kitchen. Planning on baking what she called a ‘Sorry for your loss I hope you get better cake.’ Twilight, as usual shrugged it off as Pinkie Pie being Pinkie Pie. Spike on the other hand. Went to help her bake it and to keep her from going on a baking spree.
“Spike, I need you to send this letter to Princess Celestia real quick.” Twilight asked. Although there were other ways to get a Letter to the the solar quadarc, this was the quickest and most direct.
Spike shrugged and in a puff of green sparkling flame, sent off the letter. And about ten seconds later, Spike burped out another letter which was the reply that Twilight was expecting. Spike caught it as it fell to the ground with practised ease and began to read.
Dear My faithful student Twilight Sparkle,
If such an item were to exist, it would take more Magic than you, I, Luna and Cadence combined to perform such an act, and it would leave the caster without any shred of magic. On top of that, it would be suicide to even attempt such a thing. By the way, why do you ask about that type and for that duration specifically?
~Celestia.
Twilight started to write her next correspondence when Pinkie Pie stopped her. “You can’t be thinking of answering that can you? You’ll need to have more information on what this Fall of the Moon thing is. And know in depth as to what the book is about, and deduce why it would have a spell like that on it. In order to give a compelling reason for the question.”
Twilight just stared at Pinkie Pie. Although she did have a good point no matter how she looked at it. Then she started writing another correspondence to Celestia. ‘Dear Princess Celestia, I recently found a curiosity that had such a spell on it. I am going to give you Information on it as I find it. Although I have found a very old date on it. Could you send Luna over here so that I may ask her a few questions? there is a reference to something that she may have in-depth knowledge on. I’ll send you a copy of some of the notes I make to you. I await your reply.’
Pinkie Pie went back to the kitchen as Twilight gave Spike the scroll and he sent it off. They waited for a bit and Spike belched the reply in Dark Blue flames instead of the normal sparkly green. He caught it and began to read.
Dear mine Sister’s Student Twilight. We’d be happy to come over tonight and answer any questions that you have for me. And We would like to speak to your Friend Starlight aswell about this. For every spell has a date that can be traced. And We believe that she may have the answers that We would not have. ~Luna
When Spike finished he commented. "It looks like Luna is excited about this. Twilight”
“Let me see. I’m sure that it’s not that bad.” Twilight said to Spike, not entirely convinced how bad it was. That was until she saw the hoofwriting. It looked like a little filly wrote it. Then she dropped the letter and was quiet for a few moments. “Did-Did Luna just….” Twilight’s mind broke for a few seconds before she grinned. “I’m going to need to set the table. She’ll see the best silverware placement Ever!”
“I’ll go tell Starlight about the upcoming visit.” Spike said as he left to find Starlight.
That Night in Twilight’s Castle
There was a lot of last minute preparation. Twilight had kept stopping spike to check over the tablewhere and the decor. Pinkie Pie had made Dinner for everyone while she was baking the cake and she put a cloth over said cake with a note that said “For Luna” then she left saying that she needed to get to her appointment with a very important cupcake.
Starlight was looking over the time spell like Twilight Requested. When she was done. She got to the book that Twilight was ranting about earlier and it peaked her interest. The enchantments that are on it is more intricate than anything else that she has seen. Several of said enchantments should stop each other from working. But every enchantment that is on it is active. She looked at each of the enchantments to try and find a commonality. It took a while, but what she found surprised her. There were two magic Fingerprints on each and every one that are feeding off of eachother. And building each other up at the same time. And she knew one print and she knew it well. Although she needed information to be completely sure. If she was right. It would be suicide to face the “pony” that was behind it.
Luna just teleported in and announced in her Royal Canterlot Voice. “TWILIGHT SPARKLE, WE ARE READY TO BEGIN THE QUESTIONS THAT THOU HATH MENTIONED IN THOUR LETTER!”
Twilight, to her credit, didn’t look fazed by the sheer Volume. Actually… all went out the window when she said. “What did you say Luna? I didn’t quite catch that.”
Luna looked at her and tried again but louder, shaking the castle’s foundation. “TWILIGHT SPARKLE, WE ARE READY TO BEGIN THE QUESTIONS THAT THOU HATH MENTIONED IN THOUR LETTER” when the building stopped shaking, Spike stared wearily at the blue and lavender Princesses with pleading eyes. “Please don't do that again”
“I am sorry Spike. I was just excited to be needed is all.”
“I really have only one mane question. What is ‘Fall of the Moon’? And why is it called that?” Twilight asked. The reaction wasn’t one that she expected though.
Luna held her head to try and stop a oncoming headache from forming. Before saying “It was my descent into Nightmare Moon.”
“Then how could an entry in one of the books you gave me mention it, even though it came before Nightmare Moon?”
“Who were the two ponies that wrote the book?” Starlight interjected. Luna’s headache got worse and she cried out in pain. Starlight looked for anything unusual and she saw a small magical signature in Luna’s mane. “Twi-”
That is all she could say before Spike came running in Glowing like the sun itself “TWILIGHT!” Spike yelled. “Ember needs me, may I go see what she needs?”
Twilight looked away from the glowing Dragon trying not to be blinded by the light. “Ok Spike-” the light faded as he ran out the door. “-but be careful if she needs you this badly, then that must mean-” she just noticed that he was gone.
Author's Note
A New Story! I Hope that you like it.
This story will be based during the time of the show.
The Dragonlands
Ember was sitting on her throne glaring at her cloaked visitor. The visitor said that they were old allies of her father and pulled out a contract with his signature in blood, his blood. “A personal ally of mine will be coming if that will be alright with you.” she said.
The stranger nodded slowly. Then came the sound of footsteps. Dragonlord Ember’s ally had come.
Spike walked in and saw his friend sitting in front of a cloaked figure. ”Ember!” he called and rushed to her side. ”What’s going on?”
“Spike?” The figure said took off it’s hood to reveal King Thorax. “Spike it’s good to see you!”
“Thorax?” spike asked surprised. Then he grinned. “How have you been?”
“I’ve been better.”
“What happened?” Spike asked, worried for his friend.
“The Changeling King of old has taken the throne back.” There was a tone of urgency and fear in his voice.
“What?” Spike asked in confusion.
Ember thought for a moment before interrupting the conversation. “What was his name?”
Thorax looked at ember, trying to calm himself down. “He called Himself Mark, The Changeling King.”
Ember narrowed her eyes trying to see if he was bluffing. “What did he look like?”
“He was taller than Chrysalis and his wings were like your own. Although his chitin was a crimson red for some reason. His mane was short and grass green. Our guards tried to stop him but he took the form of some strange creature, and… changed them back. They are what we changelings were before friendship”
The Spike gasped in shock, but Ember’s face stayed an emotionless mask. “Why would he do that?!” Spike asked with worry.
“There is a reason that we haven’t been allies with Equestria since Luna’s banishment Spike.”
“Could you tell us then?”
“I will tell both of you, but you must swear on your very lives to secrecy.”
Both the young dragon and the changeling nod in agreement.
With a heavy sigh Ember started. “Mark, as he has called himself is my grandfather. He raised my father and fought to protect him. When my father became Dragonlord his first action was to strike an alliance between the Dragons, Changelings and the Children of the stars.”
“Who are the Children of the stars?” Thorax asked.
Ember sighed and shrugged. “My dad never told me more about the Children of the stars except that they guide those lost in the wilderness at night. and that they are usually the best of the best at what they do. Their names do usually have something to do with night-time.”
“Like who?” Spike asked.
“Starswirl the bearded is one example, although i have the suspicion that Twilight Sparkle may be a descendant of the Children.”
“WHAT? but when we looked through her family’s history there was only other ponies!”
“Are you sure that it’s accurate? I mean that could have been the name of a hive that could have fallen years ago.”
“And how exactly does a hive treat each other?”
“Like family.”
“Can you read that Treaty of yours Thorax? There is one line near the beginning I’d like to point out”
Thorax cleared his throat and began to read. "On this Night, we are gathered here, to reunite a once great family-”
Ember cut Thorax off. “-could you reread that sentence please?”
“‘To reunite a once great family’?”
“As far as I know, there is absolutely no blood relation to Dragons and Changelings or the Children of the stars. And the rest of the wording used in the treaty suggests that they were a close as brothers and sisters.” Ember then pulls out another two scrolls from the hoard behind her. “Here are two more, although I can’t read them, Spike. Will you read them?”
The young Drake nodded and it turned out to be similar wording although, the perspectives were different, and there are two different writing styles. And the Signatures below all of them shocked both him and Thorax. The one of them had Princess Luna’s Signature in a perfect cursive, and the other had Queen Chrysalis’ signature. Spike looked at Thorax’s copy and tried to read the chicken scratch and found that the late Dragonlord Torch himself had written this.
Spike stood their in shock and asked. “Was the Dragonlands already allies with Equestria at this time?”
“Equestria wasn’t even a nation, It was more of a few colonies at that time. This was written and signed in the hundred and twenty first year of their rein. My father was no older than I was back then.”
“Then how do you know about it?” Thorax asked.
“My father told me the stories of when he was young when he could remember them.”
“What should we do then?”
“We wait, and try and figure out what my grandfather wants with what is left of his old hive. And spike, please send a letter to Twilight to inform her that you’ll be staying here for a little while.”
“What why?”
“You’ll be able to keep this secret from Twilight and her friends, even the Princesses themselves?”
“...no”
“According to this treaty, this is a family matter spike, they wouldn’t be able to do anything anyway.”
“But-”
“I know how you feel Spike.” Thorax interrupted. “But she is right. This is a Dragon and Changeling problem. No need to risk a war.”
“I’ll send a letter telling her that i will be dropping off trade and diplomatic meetings for a time due to family matters. And if i die she can speak to my successor.”
“And who is that?”
“I’d be your successor normally Spike. But since we switched places when you gave the scepter to me...”
“Oh no. no no no no no no no...”
“It’s Dragon Law Spike.”
“Thorax, can you help me?”
“Sorry, I know when not to fight a Dragoness.”
