“What do you mean you couldn’t find anything?! I came to you in the Fall; it’s been nearly ten months!” The tan earth pony glared at the crystal pony on the other side of the desk. “I’m just about to graduate with my master’s degree, and you’re telling me that there is nothing out there for me?”
The crystal pony looked up from Eff Stop’s files, remaining calm despite the earth pony yelling at her. “Mister Eff Stop – yes, you are graduating, but you are graduating with a master’s in art, primarily photography. You picked one of the least desirable degrees and then you picked the least desirable branch of that degree field. On top of that, you took more than one and a half times longer than the average student to complete all the courses, and your GPA is also just barely above the minimum required to graduate. You have minors in two completely unrelated scientific fields and, to top it all off, you have next to no experience in anything beyond entry level. I could not find anything for you because you are not qualified for anything!” the crystal pony elucidated with a sneer.
Eff Stop’s ears drooped as she beat him down with her words, his eyes drifting down to her nameplate – ‘ Failed Futures’ . How appropriate. He let out a heavy sigh as he mentally rearranged his priorities. At this point it wasn’t about trying to excel; now it was all about trying to recover his losses.
“So – what can I do, Failed Futures? I have over one hundred and fifty thousand bits in student loan debt that I took out from the Bank of Canterlot. I went to the cheapest per credit school I could find, which is why I’m up here in the Crystal Kingdom. I tried to get the free ride by applying to House Path, but I didn’t even get past the preliminary examinations. I tried to apply to be a Royal Guard, but I failed the physical tests. What more can I do? This can’t be the end, can it?” He looked pleadingly at Failed Futures, trying to keep the tears from entering his eyes.
“Hmm… honestly, I don’t know what you can do at this point. You could try your luck down south back near Canterlot or Ponyville. Generally speaking, the economies in central Equestria are faring better now than compared to a few years ago.” She flipped through a few pages. “However the chances of you finding a job that could make enough to offset your debt is very low. Photography is a luxury good; most people just want fashion photography like what Photo Finish does, or wedding photography like what Bell Duet creates. Very few people want landscape photography; they don’t see the value in it. If you want my advice, Eff Stop, try to find something to pay the bills, then ask for 25% more, because once the loans default, they will come after you.”
Eff Stop slowly raised his eyebrow as the advisor talked. “You seem to know an awful lot about my situation,” he commented when she had finished her appraisal.
She replied with a hint of sadness in her voice. “I have had to tell over twenty different ponies variants of this same talk that I am having with you. Some major in art, others in acting, while many major in philosophy. It all ends the same. Their parents told them to get a degree – no matter what degree it was, it would be better than nothing at all. For years this idea was drilled into your heads. You come to college, take out loans to become something better. But the problem with is that when every pony has a degree, nobody stands out anymore. With the majority of ponies your age now having degrees, it increases the minimum requirements for all jobs in the workplace. A degree in the arts doesn’t matter like it used to. It might have mattered to your parents, or theirs before them, but the world is changing with so many different education institutions. I wish I had something better to tell you, Eff Stop, but at least you know now as opposed to after your graduation.”
Eff Stop was in shock by this point, and he responded to her in a dull, flat tone. “Thank you for your time, Failed Futures. I need to be going now.”

Eff Stop trudged back to his dorm room. The entire hall was one giant party. Since he was in the senior dorms, everyone was celebrating their final few weeks in college. In his room, it was no exception.
“Hey Eff – let’s get wasted tonight!” came a voice from above.
Eff squawked as a pegasus landed on top of him, holding a beer. “How many times have I told you not to fly while buzzed, Silver Note? I don’t need you to slam into yet another window. My bank account can’t handle bailing you out again.”
The cream-colored pegasus laughed and rolled off of him, landing on his hooves as the pair walked over to the kitchen. The earth pony sighed when he saw six white lines of powder on the medium-sized table. On one side of the table, a pure white crystal pony was laughing manically.
“Who wants to have a race!” the crystal pony asked, gesturing at the lines.
Eff rolled his eyes. “Seriously, Talc… Seriously?”
The crystal pony started to say something in response when a few mares and hens lined up, all of them quite drunk. Talc looked away from Eff Stop and went over to the females.
“Well, well, well! We have our contestants! The Grand Prix is about to begin!” He grinned as the females cheered.
Eff Stop sighed in resignation, walked into the kitchen, and opened up the fridge to look at what food he had, and groaned. All of it was gone, replaced by booze. He grabbed bottle of Buckardi 151, put it in his back satchel and walked out of the dorm room.
He walked down the street away from the campus, taking a long sip between blocks. Every block, he took another swig from the bottle. He was warm after only two blocks.
Everything was fuzzy after four blocks.
Even with four legs, he was having trouble walking after six blocks.
The pony collapsed in the middle of the street while he was crossing from the tenth block to the eleventh....

Beep….
“Ugh...w-what…?”
Eff Stop slowly opened his eyes and looked around the curtained-off room. He looked down to his left foreleg to see an IV connected to it. His eyes followed the tube off of his forehoof and to the bag on the rack. He looked over to his right hoof to the pulse and O2 saturation monitor.
The memories of the night before came back to him – the advisor… the party… the booze. Ugh! By Celestia – he had drunken the entire bottle of Buckardi!
He pressed the button on the side of his bed and a nurse came in soon after.
“Hello, Mister Eff Stop. I am glad to see you awake!” She walked over, checking his vitals and making sure that his IV bag was still mostly full.
“What happened…?”
“You were nearly hit by a cargo carriage. They tried to wake you up and get you out of the road, but you were non-responsive. When you were admitted, you had a BAC of 0.38, and because of that, we began to try purging it out of your system. It mostly worked.” The nurse smiled, proud of herself.
“Huh...and it only took a few hours?” He looked out a window to the sun barely rising over the horizon.
“A few hours? Actually, you were out for a day and a half,” she snickered. “The attending doctor should be around soon to check up on you. Let’s see if we can’t get you discharged sometime today,” the nurse said in a practiced cheerful voice as she left, leaving the dumbstruck earth pony in the bed.
Eff Stop closed his eyes and waited until he heard another voice. It took about an hour until he heard the clip-clop of hooves. He sat back up and opened his eyes, nearly head-butting a violet changeling in a doctor’s white coat.
“Ah, Eff Stop – you’re awake! I was starting to wonder if you would wake up.” She started to chuckle softy until she felt the emotions coming from the earth pony. “Is everything alright? I know it might be scary to wake up in a hospital but I assure you that everything is fine now.”
Eff looked at the doctor for a moment. “Yeah, is there any way I can be discharged as soon as possible?”
The doctor appeared to ponder that request for a while. “Unfortunately, no. We were able to mend the light physical injuries and the alcohol poisoning, but you were... saying things in your sleep that are a cause for concern, so we have a referral for you.”
The earth pony drooped. “I can’t afford a referral, and sad to say, I won’t be able to afford you. Honestly, I’d rather just be on my way. I learned my lesson – don’t drink and walk around in the middle of the night.”
He started to sit up only for the doctor to push him back down onto the bed. “We still need to get your levels normalized, and then you will use the referral. I am sorry to say that if in one week I do not see that the referral has been used, I will be required to take other measures.” The doctor put the referral on Eff’s nose.
“In a few hours, I’ll have the nurses discharge you.”
The doctor left the earth pony alone to further recover.

Eff Stop looked over to the doctor from the sofa he was lying on, but he said nothing, and neither did the doctor for a long while. Eventually the yellow changeling spoke up.
“So why do you think you are here today?” The doctor looked over as he smiled warmly, trying to encourage the earth pony to feel safe in this room.
“If it’s what I think it is, I imagine I'm going to have a lot of explaining to do. Listen I have been to counsellors and psychiatrists before, off and on, so why don’t you start asking me the introductory questions and we can go from there?” Eff deadpanned before lying back onto the sofa.
There was another long silence until the yellow changeling started to speak.
“Okay, first off – do you have a history of drug and alcohol use?”
“I know that you might not believe it based on the last few days, but I actually don’t. I never saw the point in it. I’d burn through all my money to be high, but in the end I'd be right back at square one. I mean if I had enough money to be perpetually high, I would do that because I would never have to return to reality. Now booze, on the other hoof, before last week I drank maybe a year and a half ago? I don’t drink for the same reason as drugs, but sometimes things hit me so hard that I get myself passed-out drunk so I don’t have the faculties to take myself out.”
“What do you mean by take yourself out?”
“We both know you know what I mean.”
“So why haven’t you acted on it?”
“Because I have to wait for two conditions to be met, actually.”
The changeling sat forward with his note pad. “Conditions? What are those conditions?”
“Well there are just two of them. First – I tend to be a rather logical pony as I rely a lot on facts and figures. At least in this situation there are two figures – let’s call them figure X and figure Y. X is my contribution to society, and Y is what I take from it. X minus Y equals Z. It’s a simple formula but there are other things that go into it. In a nutshell though, as long as I am giving more than I am taking, I am viable, and existence is assured. If it is a negative number and that number stays too deeply negative for too long, I am insolvent and I should cease to be.”
The changeling nodded as he continued to write on his note pad. “And the other condition”?
“That condition… is a little more personal, and there is a long story behind it.”
“Well we have time.”
“So, Celestia moves the sun, Luna moves the moon. Everyone knows that, but what most people don’t know is that the movements aren’t perfectly in synch and they aren’t perfectly aligned. If you take enough measurements and do enough calculations, you can determine where the moon and sun will be at any given time.”
The changeling blinked. “Didn’t you say that your degree is in photography?”
“I used to be smarter than I am now.” Eff continued where he left off. “These inaccuracies add up and peculiarities happen. This is why we get eclipses but they are very rare. The last one that happened over Equestria nearly a hundred years ago, but in about four years in the month of August, the shadow of the moon will cross over Equus again, and for two and a half minutes, the noon day sun will disappear and it will be nighttime. It will be the validation of the last project I accomplished before the fever hit.”
The changeling perked up. “What fever is this?”
Eff ignored him and kept going.
“So… I am waiting for that event. Once that event has passed, the condition will be met, and if things keep going like they are, the other equation will be negative. With those two conditions met, I can pass on with nobody to miss me. I imagine I would do it either during or shortly after the eclipse. Not for a misled spiritual nature, but really just a vindication of my former more actualized self.”
“What about your family?”
“All dead. Nothing tragic – they were just old when they had me, but that’s okay. I never really spoke to them once I moved away anyway.”
“And friends?”
“They have their own lives, and they are getting ready to start their careers; they don’t need me in their life dragging them down.”
“Significant other?”
“I haven’t had one in years, I snapped one night, freaked out and broke up with her.”
The changeling by this point was overwhelmed; not only by the casualness and the muted, almost non-existent emotions coming from the college pony, but also by the fact that he was talking about the end of his existence from such a disassociated point of view.
“Well… this is a lot for me to pull together. I look forward to presenting you with my findings and recommendations during our next meeting.”
“I’m sorry, but there isn’t going to be a next meeting. I have to leave the Crystal Kingdom now so I can make it to Las Pegasus. I am going to stay with my old elementary school friend to run down the clock, so to speak,”
“Eff Stop, it only takes a few days by train.”
“I’m not taking a train. I’m selling everything off, putting my few essentials in a carriage and walking.”
The doctor’s eyes widened.
“But that would take weeks!”
“It’s why I’m leaving now so I don’t get stuck in the weather before I’ve gone far enough south.”
“Can I persuade you not to take this course of action, Eff Stop?”
Eff smiled a weak and hollow smile and shook his head. He held out a hoof to shake the changeling’s.
“Good luck, Eff Stop,” the changeling counsellor said sincerely.
“If anything, I’m a planner, doctor. With only those two goals in mind, I can make anything happen. It’s only four years, after all.”
Eff Stop left the room and the changeling frowned deeply before going back into his room to complete his notes.

Later that week in the middle of the night, Eff Stop looked at his kart. It wasn’t the best, but it was rugged and wouldn’t break like the newer, fancier models. In it, aside from some bare necessities, he had his precious cameras and a journal.
“Let’s see where this takes us,” he murmured.
The earth pony hooked up to the kart and began walking, starting his journey down the southern road hours before the sun would rise.

So I realized just recently why this story was pretty much stagnant in the water, its because I was trying to do it all in order trying remembering things I really don't want to. So now, the chapter updates will be out of order but as more get added it will flesh itself out. Expect the next chapter update in a week or so.

Objects may be further than they appear
Alone
Eff had never been so isolated and alone before.
He couldn't help but laugh to himself as he began to speak. “This didn't seem so far on the map... said the pony to the wild...”
He sighed and walked on. A few hours later he squinted and was finally able to see a settlement on the horizon. It caused his slow-paced walk to turn into a brisker gallop. He had supplies to last on his own for weeks, but nothing would sate him more than a hayburger.
The thing about the roads that far north was that due to the flatness and the lack of any landmarks that could be used as a scale, no matter how long he trotted, the settlement didn't seem to get any closer. Frustrated, he went from a trot to a canter, then to a full gallop. The pony and cart shot along the tundra, but it would take him two more hours until he finally reached the outpost. Panting as he swooned back and forth upon reaching the small general store/diner, he sat down next to his cart, trying to catch his breath.
“Well, well – most people take the airship. Not many would trek so long.”
Eff turned to look at an old crystal pony who nodded to him and offered him a large bottle of water. “I saw you galloping here. Don't you know that distances are deceiving up here in the Yukon? I’d say that you saw us from about twenty miles away, give or take. That’s the problem with flat land and a high tower – it gives the perception of proximity.”
The crystal pony walked back into the general store and, after a few more minutes of catching his breath, Eff Stop unhooked from the cart and followed.
The medium-sized building wasn't so much a general store as much as it was the one main focal-point of the town, if it could even be called that. On one end of the building there was the general store, which sold primarily repair items, spare wheels, and programmable comm crystals. The center area had food, but it was a limited menu – something basic for herbivores, something basic for carnivores and generic love gel for those that needed a little boost for a last push to the Crystal Kingdom. While those two areas caught his attention only weakly, what did catch his interest was the lounge that had a few locals and travelers resting... and one medium-sized diamond dog standing up in his chair waving at him, which instantly put Eff Stop on edge.
“You! I have been waiting for you! Tired earth pony in the Northern Lands!” The rather feminine-looking diamond dog jumped over the chair, but his leg caught the backrest and he fell flat on his face.
Eff was able to make out more of the diamond dog as he lay there. His fur was splotched black and white, and was of medium length around most of his body but grew out around his ears. Once he turned over, Eff noted that the diamond dog had very deep blue eyes and black nose. His mouth was curved into a smile as his ears twitched and swiveled a few times.
“Allo! I am Zeitnehmer, but you can call me Zei for short!” The diamond dog rolled up onto his feet and stood with his paw extended out toward the pony.
Eff Stop frowned slightly but still shook the dog’s hand with his hoof. “First off – I’m pretty sure everyone that comes through is tired. But why did you say you have been waiting for me?”
The diamond dog shook his head “Ah... Temporalists know all! See all!” He waved his hands back and forth dramatically.
Eff frowned. “Then how come you didn't see yourself falling onto the ground?”
The diamond dog paused for a second. “...I can’t see everything!”
Eff Stop laughed and, for the first time in a few hundred miles, he smiled.

The two were sitting down in the lounge area as one bit into a hayburger and the other chowed down on a chicken salad. Eff Stop was enjoying his meal but soon the casual conversation died down. It was then that he started to ask questions.
“So... Temporalist, huh?” he asked between bites.
“Well, yeah. You know how almost everyone tends to follow one of the immortals? Generally everyone aligns themselves with something. Solarists align themselves with Celestia. Lunarists align themselves with Luna, and Harmonists align themselves with Twilight. Equestria proper is roughly split between those three. Then of course you have the Martialists that follow Shining Armor. Most griffons love him. Amorists, those that follow Cadance – that’s the crystal ponies and some changelings. Most changelings believe in the great circle. You have the Temporalists – those that follow Destined's works. Then on the fringe you have those that follow Discord, and those that follow only science, logic and reason – the Logicians.” Zei grinned and took another bite of his salad.
“Yes.... thank you for that overview.” The earth pony rolled his eyes. “You talk like I didn't know that.”
The diamond dog just grinned and looked off into the distance. “You knew it, but there are those that did not.” He shook his head a few times before he leaned forward onto the table and placed a strangely shaped crystal on the surface. The dog mumbled a few words and the device rose and hovered. It started to spin quickly and a strange tangle of lines and nodes formed and dissipated in a regular pattern causing him to frown slightly.
“Hey, Eff... are you heading south toward Luna Bay?”
“Hmm... well I should be going right by it on my way down south. Why do you ask?”
The diamond dog looked over to the Earth pony with a grin. “Oh, I was just thinking that I could go with you down south and keep you company on the long trip. Never know what could happen on the journey you know?” He wasn't being all that subtle as the dog scooted next to Eff Stop and one of his paws moved down to rub one of the pony’s shoulders.
“You're about as subtle as a lead pipe.” Eff let out a deep sigh. “But all subtext aside, it would be nice not to have to be alone for the next few weeks. Get your stuff and put in my cart. We can head out tomorrow.”
Zei let out a happy yip as he grabbed the earth pony and swung him around a few times. “Yay! I’ll be right back!” He took off, leaving a dizzy pony on the chair.
“I hope this doesn't bite me in the ass...”

Warm...
So warm and soft!
Eff woke up slowly with a yawn only to get a muzzle full of fluffy fur. After a few moments, he blinked and looked around. Oh... right. He was curled up with Zei. Eff Stop usually had an empty bed, but he had the occasional partner so he still remembered what it was like to wake up with another warm body. He let out a happy sigh and curled up against him again.
A few hours later he was woken up by the feel of claws gently raking up and down his back. He opened one eye, slightly annoyed.
“About time we should get going, hmm pony? Not that I mind curling up with you. Who knew somebody so moody could be such a cuddler.” He snickered and moved to the edge of the cart.
“It’s not that I’m moody, it’s just that during my college years, everyone was more impressed by the other races and species. Earth Ponies are boring; they aren't the ‘in’ thing right now, so all the mares, hens, and ’lings flock to other species. Just before I graduated, it was pegasi that was the new hotness, so I just didn't bother. The guys wanted them, the girls wanted them. I didn't see the point in competing in a battle I couldn't win,” Eff commented as he hooked into the harness and started to pull the cart.
“Oho! So the moody pony is, shall we say, equal opportunity?”
“Eh, it’s not that! I mean – my default setting is straight, but I like to be open-minded. I didn't kick you out of my cart, did I?”
The conversation just kept going as they continued to walk down the long road, warped by the permafrost it was built upon. Then there followed a long comfortable silence. It was Eff who eventually spoke up once more.
“So… Temporalist, huh?”
“Yup!”
“So how does that work?”
“Oh, it’s actually pretty amazing, actually. When Destined recognized that he was an Alicorn of Time and Space, he realized that there was no way he could monitor the infinite because, while he was an immortal, he was still a finite being. So his movement started up among those who could understand the underlying proofs and theories to grasp the concepts of time. Most are historians because it’s easy to see potential variants of time as they occur in the past. Seeing multiple instance in the present is a little harder because it is constantly updated and spiraling apart and coming together. I am actually one of the few that can see into the future – only a few weeks at a time and I can’t really choose what I want to see – nobody can. We are just tasked to monitor the time-line as it goes by. Destined is the one that takes care of the big problems, and only if they are caused by an outside influence.” Zei nodded a few time as he spoke as if confirming his own words.
“So, are you visualizing all of this in your mind right now?” Eff Stop asked.
“Oh, no! I understand the proofs and the theories, but no mortal’s mind is strong enough to visualize the time matrix even in their dreams. Instead, Destined made visualizing crystals for us. We focus on them and it reveals what we are trying to see. At best, I can only see five to ten potential variants on the present and future, and only a few weeks out. There are some that can see months out. And of course Destined can see everything and all instances of everything. It’s actually quite confusing!” Zei laughed nervous before he calmed back down. “What about you? You asked me about what I believe, so what about you? Oh! Oh! Lemme guess! You aren't a fighter... so most likely not a follower of Shining... and you tend to be a night owl... so maybe you are a Lunarist? Am I right?” The diamond dog bounced in the cart slightly.
Eff Stop just laughed. “Buck, no! I have read enough to realize that they are just actors – they follow greater rules, rules of logic and reason. The only things that can be believed are things that can be tested, demonstrated, and replicated. The unicorn does not lift up the apple because they will it to happen. They expend a portion of their magical reserves to impart an acceleration on an object. As long as it’s equal to or greater than the acceleration of gravity, the apple moves and floats around. This is a fact of science, not belief.” Eff Stop looked back at Zei. “This is one of the reasons why I left Equestria proper. Too many people want to praise the sun or praise the moon just because it exists. Or they want to be friends with anybody, not because they want to but because a purple princess tells them it will make them harmonious. If you do something because your self-proclaimed leader tells you to, then you aren't a good pony – you just don’t want to get somebody stronger than you mad. All of the other beliefs are like this. The only other group I have any respect for are the Temporalists. They just sit back and watch and observe. They don't try to change you because you refuse to fit inside their neat little package!” He huffed, now a great deal more irritated than he was a few moments ago.
There was another long silence before Zei spoke up quietly.
“What made you so angry against the other beliefs?”
“I... I don't want to talk about it.” Eff Stop just trotted on and Zei knew that he shouldn't push the issue. The rest of the day was marked with silence mixed with small spots of light conversation. Neither of them wanted to get into any serious conversations. Zei didn't want to anger Eff Stop.. .and Eff Stop didn't want to offend Zei.
When dinner came around, they started to talk again. The pair was resting next to a small campfire near the cart when the diamond dog shifted the conversation with the subtlety of a brick through a window.
“So... I couldn't help but notice that you were letting out a happy nicker in your sleep when I was curled around you. You happen to like my fluff?” The shameless Zei waggled his eyebrows as the earth pony rolled his eyes.
“Yes... like I said – I wouldn't kick you out of my bed.” Eff poked the dying fire with the stick a few times. He dropped the stick when he felt a pair of hands dig into his back and scratch parts that he couldn't reach. He let out a low groan, leaning against the diamond dog.
“You are always so tense.”
“Am I? We have only been traveling for a few days.”
“And in those few days you are tense all the time. When I started curling up with you, I thought you would launch yourself out of the cart!”
“I just happen to have a need for attention.”
“Attention you say? How about we turn in for the night and I can give you all the attention you need.”
Eff Stop facehoofed. “If you were a pony, you would be named Lead Pipe.”
Zei rolled his eyes. “Yeah, yeah – I’m not subtle, but I’m also not hearing a no.”
Eff Stop looked at Zei for a few moments before he dumped water onto the fire and jumped into the cart eagerly. The Diamond Dog just laughed.
“Oh, Eff Stop... let’s see if I can work that tension out of you.”

Can a pony go cross eyed? (Clop)
Eff was accustomed to being alone.
In his dorm, in his bed, in his travels.
He was nervous, but not because he was not experienced. Actually his limited experience was more of an equal mix of both. He went after partners based off of their personality not their gender or species. But still he felt nervous none the less. He moved under the covers and let out a soft huff. It wasn't until he felt Zei also move that he tensed up noticeably.
“Hmmm... so tense.” Zei trailed his hands against the side of the earth pony, feeling the muscles tense up in response. “Okay this won’t do at all...” He stood up in the cart and picked up Eff, using his foot to shift the pillows around before he lowered Eff back down on them. “I thought the idea of playing would relax you, not get you even more wound up than before. Just relax for me, Eff.”
Eff Stop was about to give a snarky comment, but when the pair of hands moved to his flanks and started to work apart the knots in his legs from the long travel so far, he couldn't help but let out a groan of relief. His rear legs slowly gave out as he lay down on the pillows. Another attack on one of his sore muscles made one of his back legs twitch a few times, causing the dog to laugh slightly. “Always so tense.”
“S-shut up and work on my front half.” He pushed his legs out in front of him as the dog leaned over to work on his back, slowly working the tension and the knots out of it. Every time he felt that a vertebra was not in the right position, he pushed slightly to adjust its position back to where it was supposed to be. Moving up the pony's neck, Zei leaned down. “Now – go limp for a few seconds.” Zei smiled when he felt the pony's head get heavier, and with a sharp movement, he popped the pony's neck one way and then the other.
