Author's Note

Inspired by Assassinmonkey's artwork and my dislike for Twilight's crappy new house. This takes place after the defeat of Tirek but the crystal crappy house does not appear. Short story.

What Is Lost

Twilight paced back and forth between the book cases located within her old room at Canterlot Castle. She took a ladder that sat at the corner of her room and pushed it in front of the bookcase that lied by the window. Climbing onto it and digging aggressively through the many books. Pushing some to the side but throwing many of them onto the floor where they landed around and in front of a young purple dragon.

Though surprised a bit by her recklessness and carelessness with handling the books, he gave Twilight an annoyed look. He picked up a novel that just landed right next to him and looked at the cover.

"Twilight...what exactly are you doing?"

"I'm looking for spells Spike! What else could I possibly be doing?"

"Spells for what exactly?" Spike began to to pick up the literature that surrounded him.

"What we talked about! Perhaps it's not too late! Maybe I can repair it, my home! Maybe even bring my books and belongings back as well!"

"That was...sudden. We've only talked about it two days ago. And besides, are you sure that will be a good idea or perhaps even work?"

The unicorn slid down the ladder and confronted the purple dragon. "Of course it should work! But we won't know unless we try!"

Twilight levitated the books that surrounded Spike and took the one that he held away from him. Settling them all back on the book case with the exception of a few. Three to be exact.

Twilight smiled as she flipped through them. Anticipation and confidence crossing her face.

"This is...kind of sudden Twilight. Are you sure you've thought this through?"

"Of course I thought it through. Or at the least gave it some thought."

Spike narrowed his eyes unconvinced.

"I sat up those last two nights thinking that 'we have magic!' surely there is something out there that can possibly help me to regain my old home. We have a spell for everything now-a-days. From getting places quickly through teleportation, changing objects into something else, and even medical needs like curing illnesses and healing. Even finding lost items. Repairing a burnt tree shouldn't be too bad or reversing its condition. Along with the items that it contained."

Spike stood quiet, looking across the floor and then back at Twilight. "I'm not trying to be rude or anything but...why so anxious too get it all back? Your home I mean? It was nothing but a tree."

Twilight looked up with a blanketed look and closed the book in front of her without looking down. Her eye twitched.

Spike begun to sweat. Did he say something wrong? He wasn't trying to be insensitive or mean. It was his home as well but he didn't see the point of desperation in Twilight in her attempt to try and regain it. The silence was beginning to bother him especially since he couldn't see her front. her back was facing him. He begun to worry.

Oh my gosh I hope I didn't trigger her crazy side.

"Um Twilight, I wasn't trying to offend or anything but-I mean-It-..."

Spike had a mini heart attack as Twilight zipped as fast as time would allow in front of him.

"Just a tree! Just a tree!?" Twilight repeated with a twitching eye. "That tree wasn't just a tree Spike! it was our home and Ponyville's only Library! It was filled with knowledge! Books that were valuable on topics dealing with ancient lore like Nightmare Moon and creatures like the parasprites and heavy magic like cutie mark magic and powerful spells! But because of an angry red centaur goat butt thing their all gone! My scientific studies, my copies of my letters to Princess Celestia! My journals! My-!"

"But many of those books you can find in other libraries Twilight. Like the one here in Canterlot which has an extensive selection of lore and magical spells dating all the way back to before Celestia and Luna. Even the Crystal Empire has books on that type of content. Many unique to the empire itself. And one would agree that all those books are just as valuable if not more so then the ones we had. After all, many of them were just donations from those libraries anyway. So I bet that the same places we got our books from surely have copies of them lying somewhere or literature with similar content."

"Even so! You don't understand! What about my scientific studies? Or my copies of my letters to Princess Celestia? I can't get those back Spike! I can't!"

Spike scratched his chin. "I can't speak on your scientific studies but as for your copies of the letters you sent to Princess Celestia...have you bothered asking Celestia that just maybe, she may have the very letters you've sent her on friendship?"

"As if she's going to keep those!"

"Why not? You are her star pupil and she's collected everything else since shes been alive all these centuries. Why wouldn't she keep the letters you've sent her on the power of friendship. If you were to pass one day, those letters could be valuable to future generations. Who knows?"

"Ugh Spike its more than just my work and letters. Its more than that!"

"Than what is it Twilight? What is it about the home that you are so desperate to get back?"

Twilight stopped and looked Spike in dead in the eyes. Seeing his startled look she took a deep breath and hung her head down low as she walked back over to her table which seemed more like a crawl. She climbed back into her chair and quietly resumed flipping through the literature in front of her.

She sighed. "I didn't mean to get so emotional like that so suddenly Spike but that home meant a lot to me. It was where all the memories of my friends and you were kept. I had scrapbooks filled with photos and journals chronicling all that happened and the letters that showed what I've learned. To have years worth of dedication and memories gone in the blink of an eye, in a single day isn't just heartbreaking....its-"

"Depressing." Spike finished.

"...yeah. Depressing."

A silence stood in between the two different races as Spike gave a sympathetic look to the young adult mare. Like gemstones are treasure to a dragon it was clear that memories and sentiment were important treasures to Twilight herself. He couldn't help but take pity. He wish he knew, well, remembered, that Twilight had a physical collection of memories with her friends within that house as well as objects that were not only gifts but awards from various scientific and magical competitions herself.

He truly felt remorse for the poor thing.

Twilight's eyes grew wide as she slammed a hoof down on top of a book. The action caused Spike to flinch.

"There it is! Just what I need!"

Spike blinked. "And that is...?"

Twilight closed the books and went over towards Spike as the literature floated behind her.

"These are the books that have a few spells in them that could be helpful. All we need to do is try them out!"

"And what spells are those?"

Twilight winked at him. "You'll see soon."

Spike swallowed his worry. "...and when will that be?"

"Today!"

Oh Celestia take me now.
