Episode 1: Dragons Like Chocolate
The place didn't look much like a dragon's lair: it wasn't a cave, and in fact there wasn't a mountain or even a good-sized hill anywhere in sight. It was a flat-roofed marble building with tall carved columns supporting a generous overhang above the gigantic double-doors.
Inside, the chamber was impressive mainly by being vast. Sunlight pooled on a polished dark floor marbled with streaks of gray, and glittered on heaps of gems strewn artfully here and there. A pile of gold was lavished in one corner, and a large beanbag chair somewhat incongruously set before it.
A sleek black-and-gold dragon, some fifteen feet long, spread vast wings as he glided from one spot to the next in the room, rearranging the heaps of gems for best advantage, sweeping up stray scales, moving the beanbag chair in an effort to position it still close to the bed of gold but somehow less jarringly out of place. He failed. /Stop being nervous, Brandon,/ he told himself sternly. /Cool. Controlled. Impressive. That's what you're supposed to be. She's not going to be put off by the decor, but if you act like an awkward nervous idiot, she's sure to be put off by _that_./ He landed on the bed of gold coins, scattering a few off the top, and peered down at the polished floor to study his reflection. He swept a taloned hand over his golden horns and then combed claws through his barbels.
Faintly, in the distance, Brandon could hear a high-pitched shriek getting louder and louder, followed by a clatter of hooves on the roof, then a thump, a mare's voice going "Ow ow ow", and then more scrabbling of hooves at the far end of the roof, followed by a mint green alicorn slipping off the far end and landing in a heap before the doorway. After a few uncomfortable seconds, a feathery wing waved in the air, and she said, "I'm okay!"
The serpentine dragon spread his wings at the clattering, and was flying to the entrance as the pony dropped into view. He arrived a little too late to elegantly intercept her before she hit the ground. Instead, he blinked at the figure on his threshhold. "Lyra?! You're -- you never said -- you're a princess?"
Lyra's innocent-looking face peeked up from underneath her wings, and she stared at the dragon blankly for a few seconds, before grinning really wide. "Oh my gosh! You have a moustache!" She scrambled to her feet and flicked at his whiskers with a hoof a few times. Then she paused. "You are Desire, right? I don't have the wrong address? I've never actually flown before but I remember from the map that it was around here and there's nothing else really around here." She took a step back, and spread her wings wide. "Do you like them? I got them just for you!"
Brandon recalled himself enough to shift his wings up imposingly, and rumbled, "Yes, I am Desire." He looked regal and authoritative for a moment, his barbels -- or 'mustache' -- swaying, with a curve to them at the ends. "You are ... most welcome, Lyra." His tongue flicked out, words given a sinister emphasis, as he stepped aside and swept a wing before her in invitation to enter. Then he spoiled the effect by adding, "How did you get them to make you a _princess_ for _me_?"
Lyra giggled and pranced into the dragon's lair at a bouncy trot, folding her wings elegantly -- that part, she might have practiced. "They wouldn't! I mean, not that getting wings would make me a princess anyway, but they wouldn't even give me real wings because they thought that that would make me look like a princess, and I could use it to scam ponies. But they did have some temporary wings, and it isn't much of an illusion to make them look real..." She looked around at all the gold and gems. "While I was there, I picked up a bunch of other limbs and attachments and things. They had a whole novelty section! I figured it'd help the, you know, playacting if you actually got to do some damage." She pounced on the beanbag chair, splaying her legs and wings out haphazardly, then rolled onto her back, flicking her tail back and forth. In the process, her saddlebags slid off, and she set them by the side of the chair, where she could get at them if she needed to.
She looked the dragon up and down, and licked her lips. "See anything you like? Or should I change into something more edible?"
"Ohhh ... " Desire glides across the chamber after her. "That sounds ... delicious." His tongue flickered out again, jagged draconic teeth bared for a moment in a grin. He flew over her, and hovered for a moment, letting his shadow enfold her, before he dropped his feet to the floor to either side of the pony. "I like everything I see," he rumbled, staring at her hungrily. He dipped his head and ran the edge of his tongue along the outer curve of one wing, tasting it.
Lyra stared up at the dragon hovering over her with awe, her breath taken, and gasped as he landed over her. She lifted her hind legs to scrape her hooves along the scales of the dragon's chest, and curled her wing slightly as Desire licked it. It quivered a bit as it was presented to him, the pony that it was attached too breathing heavily. It tasted real, surprisingly -- like feathers and preening oil. Maybe that was part of the illusion she mentioned.
His underside gleamed gold, scales glittering under Lyra's hooves, but Desire didn’t back off under the pressure. The black dragon extended his tongue further. It slid down the wing and curled under the far side, so that as he pulled his tongue back into his mouth it drew the wing with it. His jaws closed over it, teeth biting down hard enough to prickle flesh, but not quite hard enough to break skin. Gold eyes locked with Lyra's; wisps of smoke puffed from his nostrils.
Lyra reached up and pressed the warm bottom of her hoof against Desire's cheek, brushing against his barbels with the fur of her fetlocks. Her own golden eyes stared back into his, and her wing squirmed a bit between his teeth. "Wow... it feels real," she said. "I wonder how much it would hurt if you really did just bite it off?" She licked her lips a bit nervously, but was still smiling.
Desire opened his mouth enough to rumble, "Are you ready to ... " Lips closed over the wing, tongue licking, saliva dripping over the appendage. Teeth pricked against one side again, making a sawing motion not-quite-hard enough to cut. From the other side of his mouth, he rumbled, " ... find out?"
Lyra whimpered a bit as his teeth ground into her wing. She scrunched up her muzzle. "If I say no, you have to promise me that you'll do it anyway. Because otherwise I'll just put it off and put it off and I'll never find out if I actually was ready or not because how can you even tell ahead of time? So, um, I guess that's a... *mumble mumble*" She looked away from him, ears flattening.
The dragon grinned around her wing, a couple of his barbels sliding over her stomach and tickling through her fur. For a moment, he was just licking, his mouth warm and wet around her, saliva soaking through the pinions, tongue soft against the underside. Then Desire chomped down savagely: feathers rent and bone splintered under his teeth. He didn't saw in one place or rip free, but shifted his grip to bite again, and again, sucking and gnawing at the wing.
Lyra's breath caught at the first bite, as a savage pain stabbed through her wing. Her mouth hung open, her eyes went wide, but no sound came out. As Desire continued to bite down and break and re-break the wing-bones, she squirmed and struggled, pressing her hindlegs against his chest as if she could even shift his massive, flexible body by pushing him away, a high-pitched squeal escaping from her muzzle as she tried to pull the wing out from between his teeth, which only made it hurt more.
The wing itself was strangely bloodless, and didn't taste much like meat on the inside. More like meat-flavored cardboard.
"Gods, that's so good," he growled around a mouthful of wing, because her reaction was sweet and savory even if the wing itself was pretty disappointing. He put one taloned forefoot against Lyra's chest to brace her, smirking at her ineffectual struggle as he finally ripped the wing off. He swallowed it down quickly, because the texture was unsatisfying and he didn't want to linger over it. His tongue flicked over the stump as if to lap at the blood that wasn't there.
Lyra curled up underneath him, leaving the stump exposed for him to lick, shivering and breathing heavily. She squeaked in response, but it only took a few seconds for her to calm down. "I'm okay," she said, uncurling enough to look at him. Her other wing was held tightly to her side now, though. "Wow... you're so vicious," she said, stretching out a foreleg to hook around the side of his neck, brushing her hoof against his mane, then leaned in to kiss him, pressing her lips against the end of the dragon's muzzle.
The black-and-gold dragon kissed her back hungrily, tongue flicking out to taste her lips, to slide between them and lick at the roof of her mouth. He shifted his forepaw to encircle her back and hold her closer, two claws supporting her neck and head. After a little exploration, he drew back. "I hope you still like vicious." He tried to say it with a smirk, but the words were a little too breathy and earnest to be mistaken for flippant.
Lyra's tongue licked at Desire's, and she hooked both forelegs around his neck as he pulled her close. She grinned at his question, and slowly extended her remaining wing, curling it around to stroke his mane.
The primary feathers wiggled independently, and one of them tickled his nose.
The dragon couldn't help grinning when she tickled his nose, and gave a distinctly undraconic giggle. Desire tried to cover it by growling, "Because you know that just whet my appetite. It makes me hungry to eat *all* of you." Still cradling her body in his forepaw, he snorted and snuffled over her chest and stomach. He twisted his head sideways to wrap his mouth around her sides, his head fitting neatly between her hind and forelegs. His tongue slid out to encircle her, teeth pricking through her fur but not piercing the hide. He suckled at her body for a few moments, then released her to say, "... but I shouldn't." Then he smirked. "I wouldn't want it to be over too *quickly*, after all." His head darted for her wing then, mouth snapping closed around it and worrying at it like a dog with a favorite toy.
Lyra tenses up as the dragon's mouth closed around her... he's kidding right? Yes, he's probably kidding, but oooh, what if he's not? What if she'll never return from this trip? She braced her foreleg against his muzzle, just in time for him to let go, and looked over at him with fear and desire. He bent his long neck towards her, jaws parted, then he paused. "Wait, which Lyra are you? You're the first one to arrive but I forget if I'm eating the first Lyra or the second Lyra."
Lyra laughed nervously, and put a hoof up to suggest that she was blocking his eager muzzle. “You’ll eat the one that comes back in time. If I don’t spontaneously appear in a few minutes, then I’ll travel back and be the one eaten.” She stepped forwards and leaned against his warm, slick scales. “I’m not sure whether I’m hoping for that or dreading it. Maybe both.”
Desire licked his long, sharp teeth, then closed his mouth to nuzzle her flank gently. "So ... you're sure this is going to work, right? I don't want this to be the last time I ever see you. Er. Ever see Lyra. As long as there's still going to be some Lyra left I think it's okay if I eat one of you." He didn't sound too certain about this. Even as he spoke, his head rose to look around for another Lyra appearing. His tail curled about around the current Lyra possessively.
“Let’s go inside,” Lyra said, hopping onto the dragon’s tail, and skittering down the other side. “Time travel isn’t exactly legal…” she paused. “Actually, I don’t think there’s a rule against casting the spell. Knowing the spell is definitely against the rules, though.” She lifted her tail and wiggled her rear end at the dragon as she headed for the dark entrance.
Entranced, Desire followed her inside. He caught up to her at once, long forked tongue flicking affectionately up her spine. "That'd be more convenient the other way. Since the Lyra that casts the spell is the one that will be ... " he paused, then drawled out the word with chilling emphasis, " ... punished for it."
Lyra cackled to cover her own trepidation, and glanced around at the dragon’s treasure as she headed farther inside. “You should mark me,” she said. “If it’s fresh on the time-clone, then we both know that we’ve got the right one and you’re not accidentally eating me after I travel back in time three years from now. I really… I really don’t want to screw this up. Bon Bon would kill me.”
"Bon Bon would kill me. Since if we screw this up you won't be around to kill. All right. Where's convenient for me to mark you?" Desire drew his nose over her body, and parted his jaws against her thigh. "Here? I won't bite too deep."
Lyra let out a shuddering breath. “Go ahead.”
Desire bit down shallowly, just firm enough to slice through the skin with rows of sharp teeth. He nipped off a narrow strip of hide less than an inch long, leaving a bloody patch behind.
Lyra hissed and clenched her teeth, stomping at the ground with a forehoof as she held her hindlegs locked… her nethers already glistening from the feeling of even that small of a bite. “Thank you,” she said, once she’d recovered sufficient presence of mind. “Now I’m going to wait five minutes for a time-clone to appear, and if it doesn’t, I’ll travel back in time three.” She turned and gave Desire a sloppy kiss, licking her tongue against his bloody muzzle. “Hold me until then?”
"Right." Desire glanced around. "And whether you go back in time, or not, I wait for your clone from three years from now to show up to prove that the first clone isn't the last of you. I think. Is that right?"
Lyra laughed. “It’s probably safer to never travel back to this time again. You’ll know it’s not the last of me because there’ll be two of us. But to be safe, eat the one that comes back in time. In case a paradox somehow makes the impossible clone vanish eventually.”
"All right." Desire curled up around Lyra. "I'll eat the one that comes back in time, and make the one who didn't time travel promise not to travel back in time to get eaten. No wonder time travel is illegal. It is pretty scary. Fun. But scary." He shivered, and nuzzled the nape of Lyra's neck.
Lyra sighed, and stroked her hoof along Desire’s neck. “Why are you scared? Silly dragon.”
"Because I want to pretend to be an evil pony-devouring monster, not actually be an evil monster. Pony-devouring, maybe."
Lyra rested in the grasp of Desire for what probably ended up being more like ten minutes, enjoying the feel of his scales and the sheer mass of his presence. Eventually, she had to admit that no time-clone was showing up to save her. She extracted herself from his embrace, set her hooves into the floor, and lit her horn. “Okay,” she said. “Here goes nothing.”
Desire took a deep breath and nodded.
Her horn flared brightly, gaining a second aura encasing the normal horn-glow, then she gritted her teeth and a third over-glow appeared, the surface flaring like fire. There was a building buzz of white noise, and then --
--Lyra appeared in the same place she’d just been standing in, the flash of a time travel spell fading around her. She looked over to Desire, and let out a breath as she saw a mint-green unicorn curled up in his embrace. “Um…,” she raised a hoof and waved. “Hi?”
Desire sighed and hugged the Lyra in his arms close. "Oh, whew, it worked. You don't have to cast the spell!" He gave her a kiss, then gave the newcomer a long, slow smile full of sharp teeth. "Well, hello there, my dear."
“Did someone order a tasty unicorn wench?” the time-travelling Lyra said, swishing her tail as she approached the dragon. “I hope you’re not planning on eating me too quickly.”
“You know we’re not,” the other Lyra said, sticking close to Desire’s side.
Desire stroked Lyra-1's flank possessively with the tuft of his tail, neck arched to loom his head over Lyra-2. "I would never eat such a delectable morsel in haste." He slurped his tongue down her side, in a long rough stroke that ended on the slice of skin fresh-cut from her outer thigh. "You must be properly prepared first, after all."
“I don’t know if I’m ever going to be prepared,” she said, quivering beneath his tongue. Her heart raced, but it wasn’t terror, precisely – somehow, she still felt safer for the dragon’s presence. Maybe some technical details would distract her. “Let’s see what we’ve got to work with. You said you had a kitchen?”
"Of course I have a kitchen." He laughed, with a rumbling wicked edge on it, and snatched her up in his jaws. "Come alon', m' 'ear," he said to Lyra-1, muffled around the pony in his mouth. He carried Lyra-2 into the kitchen. It was a dragon-proportioned chamber, which put the counters and fixtures at chest height to Desire, and well over head-height on the ponies. A gleaming steel oven set in the counter was at odds with the old-fashioned open hearth at the center of the room. There was a cauldron in one corner, but the hearth currently only had a spit over it. He set Lyra-2 down on the counter. "As for unprepared -- well, you soon will be. It's too late to change your mind now!" He laughed cruelly. Then stopped and eyed her. "Actually, it's not too late. You can still change your mind, you know. I'm not quite sure what Bon Bon will do with two Lyras, though."
“Oh no,” Lyra-1 said. “If she’s not getting eaten, I am.”
"I can't eat you!" Desire said. "She came from the future, if I eat her past Lyra then doesn't she disappear? Except you were never going to be her anyway ..."
“Don’t think about it too hard,” Lyra-2 said. “I’m not backing out.” She laid down on her side on the counter, flipping her tail a few times. “In fact… why don’t we finalize that?” She rolled onto her back, and flopped her tail down flat against the stone surface. “Chop it off. You can keep it as a trophy.”
“Let me up!” Lyra-1 said, hopping to try to get her head over the counter-height. “I want to see!”
Desire chuckled. "As you wish. Don't try to confuse me about which of you is which before I get her marked." He lifted Lyra up onto the counter with one forepaw. Then Desire curled his lips back in a grin, tongue licking over teeth. He ran his nose down her exposed belly, breath hot against her fur, until he stopped and nosed her legs further apart. Then he bit down, precisely, clamping the base of her tail between sharp dragon teeth, then grated them together with one swift motion to sever the extremity.
Lyra-2 arched her back as the dragon’s muzzle slid down her front, and gave a little squeak as his teeth gripped her tail. “Ah!” she gasped, as he bit it off -- the little stump remaining wiggled back and forth frantically, dripping a bit of blood on the counter as the severed tail twitched and flopped a few inches away before going still.

"I did set up the spit in case you wanted to be spitted," Desire said, helpfully. "I'll start with shaving, while you think about that part." Desire slithered about the kitchen, retrieving a few sticks of butter from the refrigerator. He melted them in a ceramic bowl with a precise blast of firebreath, then lathered the butter into Lyra-2's fur. He worked it into her chest and left flank first, then stropped a knife to sharpen it. Lyra-2 licked her lips. “Yeah, I think I do want to see that,” she said. “I think… I might want a little taste.” She giggled nervously, a grin on her face.
Desire grinned as well, and wrapped the twine about each of Lyra's thighs, then pulled it much too tight, uncomfortably tight. He tied a knot, and then repeated the process a few more times, just to be sure. The shaved, pink limbs soon started to turn blue at the interrupted blood flow. Lyra-1 scowled and cleaned her off, without saying a word. Just glowering at her.
Desire mixed together the various herbs with what was left of the butter, and then set the thighs to soak in the solution. He lapped at the rest of the pony in between steps.
