Lonely Hooves: Amnesic Hero
Wanderer
Load Full Story"So, this is how it's going to be, is it?" His voice was cold and hollow, unlike his normally formal attitude. Red eyes peered down from his balcony. Your breaths quickened and your blood boiled. Sweat dripped from the side of your cheek while cuts and bruises burned through the nerves of your body. Everything was riding on what you did here and now. There was no room for error. Any wrong move could spell the end for this world, and perhaps many more.
This grim, desperate struggle for survival started was all because of you. Deep down, you knew that you and your friends were pretty well outmatched in every category.
But things weren't always this way. Let's rewind, shall we?...
Equestria.
The home of pegasi, ponies, and unicorns. A world of myth and legend, held in harmony by its ruler, Princess Celestia. In this land, strange beasts, creatures and even dragons exist among its equine inhabitants.
But none of them are as strange and out of place as the beast wandering out of the fog near Ponyville.
Your memory seemed so fuzzy. Your mind drifted off whenever you tried to think about it. It seemed as if an outside force rejected your request to know. It was just like your surroundings; foggy and unrecognizable. However, a small ray of light pierced through the mist, clearing your vision.
"Uuuugh... Where am I?" you murmured. Your eyes opened, giving you a fair glimpse of the town ahead. "On that, what am I? This is awkwa-" Suddenly, your left leg tripped over itself. You tumbled down the tall hill you were standing on. "WAAAAUGH! OOF!" You face-planted right next to the edge of a small lake and looked at your reflection.
"Huh?" You were completely startled by what you found. "I'm a horse!" you screamed. "But why am I a horse?" Another look behind you revealed that the residents of the town were indeed the same race as you: horses. "W-Why is EVERYONE a horse?! I'm in a land of horses!" At this point, everypony in the area was looking at you like they had seen a sixteen-headed hydra. "AND...! AND... ...and I don't know who I am." Your ears drooped to the side as tears formed in your eyes.
"Bummer, dude."
"ACK!" Your heart stopped for a split second as you quickly turned your head to find a grey pegasus with a light yellow mane staring at you upside down while resting on a cloud.
"Oh, sorry. Didn't mean to sneak up on you." she said, rolling back over on her stomach. Her golden eyes went cross-eyed and a bright smile was plastered on her face. "I saw you come out of the fog and immediately fall on your face. I can relate." She blew a tuft of hair out of her face. "Name's Ditzy Doo. What's yours?" Ditzy held her hoof out as a greeting, but your reply to the gesture was raising an eyebrow.
Her eyes slowly drifted apart as her hoof dropped. "...Oh, right. You don't know. Sorry."
At this time, you've had it up to here with the shenanigans. "Ee-yeah. I'm walking." you snorted, taking your leave away from the mare. You just wanted to remember who you were and where you were.
"Oh, hey, come on!" And this "Ditzy Doo" girl wasn't helping your case.
"Yeesh. What a meanie." Ditzy Doo pulled out a rock with a smiling face painted on it. "What'cha think, Bruno? Should we help that old Fussbucket?"
Bruno continued smiling at the cross-eyed mare. Total silence.
"Your right, Bruno. We can't just leave a pony with no brain on their own. Even if they are kind of rude." In a split second, Bruno left Ditzy's hoof and relocated itself into you head at blazing speeds.
"OW! What the--?!" You turned back around, rubbing the back of your head.
"Bruno knows kung-fu." Ditzy replied in a mysterious tone.
"You threw a rock at me!" you scolded. Another look gave you a realization. "And you can fly."
Ditzy gave a quick scoff. "Bruno's not just some rock. He is a faithful and loving companion. An' of course I can fly! Every pegasus" She flapped her wings to emphasize her point. "I mean, can't you?"
You flinched. "What? No! It's not like I have- WINGS!! I have wings. Gyuh." You felt your body go woozy as your eyes shrunk.
Meanwhile, Ditzy watched the scene unfold. "Wowee, you're a strange one. How hard you hit that noggin'?"
"I think I'm gonna lose it." You panted between hyperventilation.
"I think you already did!" the cross-eyed mare called out again. "Look, just calm down. Ol' Ditzy Doo'll help ya get your head straight!"
You sweat dropped and took a seat on the ground. "Oh, joy..." Another hit from Bruno conked you in the head. "OW!"
Ditzy quickly dawned a red flannel glasses. "Welcome to Let's Learn with Ditzy Doo!" She cheered. "Now let's start simple. You dunno your name, but do you know where you are?"
You tilted your head in curiosity. "Horse Land?"
"Equestria! Or more specificly, Ponyville!" Ditzy pointed a stick at a picture of the town.
"Ponyville?" you repeated.
"Probably on the account of all the ponies!" Her eyes suddenly drifted to the opposite sides, pointed, and shouted, "We're all ponies! Even you!" She reappeared behind you and continued. "You an' me are pegasi, on the account of th' wings. Pony with a horn? That's a unicorn! Hyehehe! that rhymed." She snickered at her own joke "They can use magic to do all sorts of stuff! It's pretty cool."
"An' then there's the earth ponies. They don't look all that special, but the truth is they're really strong!"
Ditzy then ripped off the clothes and removed her glasses. While the demonstration was helpful for getting the basis of this world's species down, it however did not help with the thought plaguing your mind.
"For the record, I find my equine status to be a bit alarming." you sighed.
Ditzy's eyes were drifted completely apart. "And that is really weird! I mean, what else would you be?"
"I get that, but like..." You started. "Could I really lose my memory so bad that I forget what I am?"
The cross-eyed mare's eyes reverted to their normal state. Well, at least as normal as a cross-eyed pony's eyes could get. "You're askin' the wrong pony. I've been scared by my own reflection before." She then put a hoof around you, holding you tight. "But don't you worry! Ol' Ditzy Doo'll keep you on course in being a horse!"
"You refer to yourself that way a lot, huh?" you mumbled to yourself.
Ditzy then leaned in close to your face and said, "Bruno hates mumblers!" You swore that you could see yer eyes emitting a golden glow while a vein popped out of her forehead. Her expression immediately lightened as she started trotting towards the town. "Now come on! I'll give you the grand tour!"
'Mood springs, much?' you thought, closely following the mare.
As you and your "tour guide" reached the entrance to the town, Ditzy Doo held out her hoof and pointed to the structure they were walking on. "This is a bridge!"
You could only chuckle at this. You may have forgotten who you were, but you didn't forget absolutely everything in the world. "Give me some credit, Ditzy."
The mare turned her head and curled her lip into a sly smirk. "Dude, you forgot your own species."
"Fair enough." You felt your self-respect take a hit.
